Even, Odd, or Neither Functions The Easy Way! - Graphs & Algebraically, Properties & Symmetry

  • This algebra 2 and precalculus video tutorial explains how to determine whether a function f is even, odd, or neither algebraically and using graphs. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems using variables and constants. First, plug in -x into the equation and see if the sign changes. If all signs change, it's an odd function. If they all remain the same, then it's an even function. If some change while others do not, the function is neither even or odd. For graphs, even functions are symmetric about the y axis. For odd functions, the symmetry exists about the origin. For circles with even and odd properties, it does not pass the vertical line test and is therefore not a function.

The fact that my teachers never once mentioned an easier solution like checking the exponents is baffling to me. I understand teaching us HOW to get the end results, but also teaching tips and tricks that make it easier also helps. Why make us go through such a tedious process when we can find an answer in a much simpler way? Thank you for teaching us how to show our work AND determine what our answer is quicker

Thank you so much! This was a very straight forward explanation and I was able to get through my trouble with this section of my precalculus class.

The last example left me hanging. WHY THE HELL I DID NOT CONSIDERED THAT!!!!!
And also by the way, in 13:18 this isn't a function right? So it means that the answer isn't 'neither'?

13:19, I have a doubt there. We see from the vertical line test that the curve is not that of a function.
