    For those not using the cube go pro, make sure you have the gimbal reversed as the normal go pro has to be used upside down ( mirror mode) so this means the gimbal motor has to be at the top ( shown here as "bad") so that your image is centered with your bike bars.

    I have just drilled a hole for a 1/4" bolt into my GoPro chesty and then mounted the Evo SS gimbal directly to the chesty. It is much more stable than using the gopro mount and adapter. Wearing a pack with a chest strap across the top part of the chesty plate makes it even better.

      A couple of footnotes for you all....The GoPro Chesty is a bit out dated at this point. When it was designed many years back, nobody thought about mounting a gimbal to it.....this was prior to Karma Grip as well. The problem begins with the elastic straps.....no matter how tight you make them, they turn the chesty into bungee jumper with the added weight of a gimbal. Simply too much whip going on. The added G forces and whip will not allow any gimbal to properly function. If you choose to use the GoPro QR system and finger tabs....you are only adding more swing leverage by moving the weight outward, further from the chest.....creating even more whipping. If you want to use your existing GoPro Chesty, remove the over shoulder elastic and replace it with firm nylon webbing....eliminating the bounce and bungee effect. By using a larger moto roost protector, you get the base stability as well firm webbing to nix the bungee whip effect of the GoPro Chesty plate. Ultimately, everyone has a different riding style and this system could be overkill for many. Keep experimenting and get creative. #keepitsmooth

    Any tips for correct mounting of the EVO SS on an EVO Extension Rod for filming simulating crane boom movements? I've experimented using the SS facing forward of the extension rod (round portion of Gimbal is facing the ground when rod is parallel to the ground, ie: power button on the left, mode button on the right), motor up, and motor on the right, as the method used in this video runs into the SS acting funky when moving the rod with SS and GoPro from the ground level in an upward motion and causes the SS to run into it's motor stops. Would love to see a tutorial video on using the SS with the EVO Extension Rods.

      Update, I'm confused? I just mounted mine rounded portion up and the footage is horrible and shaky. I am super bummed because I just did a big ride and none of the footage can be used. I also just attached it directly to my go pro chest harness with a 1/4 20 as described in the video. The footage was way worse then non rounded up in the past and not screwed directly to the chesty. It is like the Gimbal could not smooth itself out where as before mounting it different direction or having the motors up seemed to make better footage. I don't want this chest plate because it would be too hot.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth

      Hi Derek,
      That is definitely strange. Can you please email us directly (support@evogimbals.com) and I will have Jaymo take a look? Also, let us know what camera you were using. The problem with gimbals mounted to the GoPro Chest harness, or any other chest harness like it, is that the stretchy straps move and bounce like a trampoline creating a leverage "whip" of sorts onto the gimbal setup.This whip is nasty. None of these harnesses were ever designed with a Gimbal in mind. We change out all of our straps with nylon webbing so there is no bounce.That is why Jaymo uses the small roost protector. It is a firm and stable platform.It is not over heating nor cumbersome. Frankly, for the crew here, it is much more comfortable than the GoPro style chest mount which often feels like a bunch of rubber bands squeezing you torso. Anyway, give us an email and we can help find your gremlins.

      the mode button as well as the top mic will be covered when installed in the mount. We suggest going into your camera settings and having the top record button automatically turn the camera on/off. In addition, you can use the Go Pro Capture APP to switch between modes. Lastly, you may want to look into the Go Pro Remo in order to voice activate the camera on/off. Hope that helps! Any other questions, please contact support@evogimbals.com.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Abhinav,
      Thanks for reaching out. If you continue to have issues with the footage please email us at support@evogimbals.com and we'll look into getting that fixed. As for the Hero 5 audio issues we still recommend having the pro-tune audio set to "OFF" and the audio capture setting set to "WIND". This seems to work for most of our customers. However, this is not an issue with our gimbals, but with the new waterproof design of the Hero 5 which have a high tendency to amplify almost all background noise even in non-gimbal applications. The feedback is most prevalent in housing mounted applications on car mounts as well as gimbals. For the best audio, we highly suggest investing in an external mic. Any other questions, please let us know!

    • @nofrontbrakes
      @nofrontbrakes 7 лет назад +4

      Abhinav Bhatt the sound on Hero 5's are awful. I recommend a 3 or 4, or keep the 5 and use a portable audio recorder like a Zoom with lapel mic/lavalier. Or just throw music over to mask and the Hero5 audio.

      We just finished up a video about motor noise......have not posted it yet....but will soon. The SS was designed prior to the release of the hero5 and hero6. We were caught by surprise with the added weight of the hero 5 and hero6. The weight difference between those and the hero4 is quite a bit.....30grams! That is simply too much to fix with firmware. When using a hero5 hero6, depending on an individuals style, you can max out the SS motors with moderate level riding/ripping/shredding. That is why I always recommend the hero Session series for this gimbal...it is balanced perfectly. So then? What to do with a hero5 or hero6. The answer is counterbalancing the roll axis. I know....this requires some DIY until we launch our counterbalance kit and the next generation of the SS. If you want to DIY it, a 14gram (ish) weight, 3M double-sided tape, adhered to the tilt axis motor will balance out the hero5 hero6 on the roll axis plane. Whew?! I hope this made sense? email customer service and we can send you some fotos to help explain further. and motor noise....???? Not to much you can do about that. Each action cam is different. The Garmin Virb audio is stellar in our gimbals.....GoPro not so much....but here is a band-aid: Make sure you GoPro has the most up to date firmware. Once camera is turned on, swipe left on the screen to expose the pro-tune menus....keep swiping left until you reach manual audio control. turn that on. choose "wind only"....then the GoPro will always choose the mic with the least amount of noise by default. The camera has three mics. It will use the one with the least amount of "wind" or junk noise.

      I usually just throw it in the little padded bag that came with your SS gimbal. I have had my SS since the day we launched it 1.5 years ago. Same gimbal.....it keeps on working.....I don't think you need to work too much about squishing it. The one thing that can effect its ability to operate well is dust. dust and dirt in the motors will cause grinding and the product will loose its smooth. make sure to blow out your SS with some compressed air if you use it in the dirt.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth

      Any moto "roost protector" will work. The one pictured is made my the moto company EVS Protection. Making a roost protector is not rocket science, so anything will work. Just make sure to get a "Roost Protector" and not a full body protective chest/back offroad protector. I use a "kids size" roost protector as they are even smaller in the chest area. On a mountain bike, you need the breathability. The Roost Protector is normally used to describe a protection piece that is chest only. It is used by motocross racers in a "clean dirt" environment. Meaning, they are racing on a track, or in a stadium, with clean dirt....no rocks, sticks, debris....nothing but high quality clean dirt. The roost protector is designed to keep the "roost" from the person in front from causing injury. In general, this protector is smaller and lighter weight than the true "offroad" body protectors.

    In regards to the Hero 6, how would this gimbal do with this setup? Would the added weight of the GP6 cause the motors to work overtime resulting in excessive motor noise?

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  6 лет назад

      Hi There,
      The Hero 5/6 Black is larger than the past Go Pros so there is a slight weight imbalance that is noticeable when riding pretty hard. However, the majority of users will not notice this slight imbalance as it is pretty minimal. For those that want to make adjustments, we suggest adding 14 grams to the tilt motor by using wheel weights.

      EVO Gimbals I know the original was +1 yr ago but I am hoping you still monitor this thread....I just bought my Hero 7 Black and the EVO SS Gimbal. (Thank you for the informative video). A couple of questions.... a) in my package from you guys there was a Weight with a Sticky adhesive side.....and I can see from your reply to the original post...that you suggest adding it to the Tilt Motor???? Diagram please. B) I tried it out for the first time today.....and I seemed to constantly be hitting the gimbal with my knee on a climb which often knocked it out of alignment (I have it orientated as you suggested...the motors down and left.). Any suggestions? C). If using the Hero 7 BLack....do you recommend using the Hypersmooth as well?? All the videos out there seem to be 50/50 as to if it should be On vs Off. Thank you in advance....signed ‘old’ guy new to this sport.

    thanks Kris for a very informative how-to video. one quesiton: the roost protector has a ridge vertically down the center. I would have thought that makes for a bad/unstable platform for the Evo base. did you file yours flat in the area of the 1/4x20 bolt prior to installing the bolt ?
    thanks again.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  7 лет назад

      Hi There,
      Thanks for contacting us. Depending on the Roost (chest) protector you decide to use; it is very uncommon for any of the manufacturers to use a hard stuff plastic. Most of the companies are using a soft squishy plastic as to move with the body and squish on impact. Therefore, you don't really need to shave or "flatten" the plastic; as the simple pressure to the 1/4 20 bolt (with a flat washer on each side) will flatten and grip any ridges of curves in the chest protector.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  6 лет назад

      sorry for the delay.....the plastic is so soft it just smooches into position. no custom work needed to the plastic. I use a standard photo tripod d ring.

    Is there a way to make the left/right pan quicker? I have it set to motion but if you are doing a slow switch back type of climb the camera is filming off to the side and not pointed in the direct I am riding...any thoughts?

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  6 лет назад

      Hi Nathan,
      You can go into "custom" settings right below the "motion" option and play around with the values for what suits your needs. You will want to decrease the pan axis under "Control Dead Zone", and increase the pan axis under "Following Rate" and "Degree of smoothness". Hope that helps!

    • @williamcleveland6426
      @williamcleveland6426 5 лет назад

      EVO,When positioning the gimbal in this video's orientation would the PAN axis actually be using the ROLL axis motor or does the gimbal know to swap axis on initialization in its "boot-up" orientation / position?With the motors are in the direction as described in the video and the 1/4"-20 thread towards my chest, I am actually panning with the roll axis as labeled in the manual when the gimbal is in the default orientation, 1/4"-20 thread down.By this rationale, should we modify the PAN motor settings or the roll motor settings in the method described above?

    I use the SS and Session as well. I was wondering if you or anyone else has been able to eliminate the sound of the gimbal motors? I could hear it in your video some even with the music and without music it is really irritating. I have to use a second gopro not in a gimbal for sound or record the sound with my phone. Thanks!

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  7 лет назад

      Hi Robert,
      You definitely will pick up windspeed noise which is what we believe you are hearing in our video. We suggest using an external mic for the best audio as that will eliminate the use of a second unit. Hope this helps! Any other questions, please let us know.

    • @MTBXterra
      @MTBXterra 7 лет назад

      I appreciate the response. The noise is from the gimbal motors and is a different sound than the wind noise. I have the Session 4 so external mics are not an option. I had thought about maybe adding felt to the inside of the session's cage to dapen the noise. I think most of it is transferred through the gimbal arm and session's cage. I know all gimbals will have some motor noise, but I think with the session it is a little more than normal. Wind noise I can deal with, the higher pitched motor noise is the problem. I think most GoPro users do use an external mic anyway.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth
      @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth  7 лет назад

      Hi Robert,
      If you are getting minor motor noise you can remove it using a denoiser in Premier Pro. We also suggest changing your audio capture setting set to "WIND". Let's hope that does the trick!

    Hey great video. I did realize something that is pretty important though through some trial and error. At 4:02 Kris says to hold the camera in position until the gimbal motors engaged. If you don't do this the camera will end up pointing towards you! If you re-orient the camera so it is facing out, you end up with only about 40 degrees of tilt before the gimbal hits the motor stop. the result is a clunking noise like this!
    www.dropbox.com/preview/External/Evo%20Gimbal%20Issue.mp4?role=personal
    I watched the video several times and it clicked that if you hold the camera in position you will get the full range of tilt function and no clunk!

You spent all that time creating something awesome why not include the necessary hardware to make it an ACTION camera gimbal?

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth

      Hey Rob. The only thing you need to do is specify in your order that you want the GoPro Session Mounting Plate. Across our entire line of "ActionCamera" gimbals, the only thing that changes is the mounting plate. It is very modular and can be changed in less than 60secs. When you order you SS, we will load it with whatever mounting plate you need. Then you can order extra mounting plates for other cameras if you will be operating the gimbal with multiple cameras. Their is no other camera that works better with the SS than the Hero5 Session. So simple with great 1080p 60fps. Turn ProTune on via the GoPro app and the footage is stellar.....especially for distribution on Instagram, Facebook and RUclips.

    • @EVOGimbals_KeepItSmooth

      Sorry for the delay Rob......I am going to cut and paste from an earlier reply regarding weight and balance. But first, don't be afraid to reposition the camera while the gimbal is turned on. Just grab it and hold it into the position you want, the firmware will hold and lock that position until you turn the unit off. Weight and Balance: The SS was designed prior to the release of the hero5 and hero6.

      Hi Chris,
      Once you set the scene mode to "motion" it will automatically save that setting across a power cycle. However, if you are doing a custom setting you want to ensure to scroll down and click "save" in order for the changes to save.

    Do you think that gimbal would work underneath my airplane?

      Hi There,
      Thanks for contacting us. Our gimbals have a max windspeed of 55MPH. Depending on the type of airplane you have, if you are planning on going faster than this speed, we do not recommend it.

      Hi Ben C,
      This was done in default mode "follow mode". Any other questions, please let us know.

      For any true POV....I love the Hero5 Session. Protune ON using the default Protune settings. 1080p 60fps Superview. 2.7k Superview is available on this camera as well, and technically produces better video, but most of the time my time frames and distribution channels don't really warrant the added digital real estate. Bigger resolutions exponentially slow down your post production and distribution .... always ask yourself what the goal of you shots are .... are you shooting for Discovery Channel? No? You are distributing on Instagram and Facebook? Just run 1080 :) Save the hassles.

    Thank you for the video. Unfortunately the plate for that body strap is WAY too big. I wouldn’t do one climb with that on. Check out a RUclipsr called BKXC. He uses an evo mounted on a gopro chesty. No one is putting out quality mountain bike vids at this cat’s level. It can be done

      Thanks Charlie. Here is my take on the GoPro Chest plate. I answered this question earlier in this thread....so pardon my "cut and paste" here on your question. The GoPro Chesty is a bit out dated at this point.

      Hi Reuben,
      Thanks for reaching out to us. The trail Kris is riding is in Winterpark, Colorado and it is called "cruel and unusual". If you have any other questions, please reach back out.

      bLitzKrieg it’s best to mount it on your chest especially if your riding tight single track in the woods.

    This is hands down the worst product I have ever bought. It doesn't work as advertised, the camera keeps flipping upside down whenever I move or turning to face me and on top of that all of my calls to their corporate number and to their support email have gone completely unanswered. I am completely disgusted with this product. Waste of money, do not buy!!
