- Episode 502. Kirkland just re-released their 18yr Speyside Scotch. Is it still good? This is the last in my short 18 year old Scotch series this year. Which ones have you enjoyed? #scotch #kirkland #whiskyneighbour
The Glendronach 18 is over $200 USD as compared to about $70 USD for this Kirkkland 18. A better comparison will be Tomintoul 16 for $70 USD. It's a toss up between the two.
Sounds good! I need to find a release of the Tomintoul
I have the 18-year Kirkland and while I don't have a lot of experience with older Scotch. It compared favorably with the only other whiskies I have with that much sherry, GlenAllichie 12 and the Arron Sherry Cask. It was pretty good and I paid around $75 dollars American, which put pricing at a bargain.
Glad you enjoyed it, and certainly a good price for an older release.
Another great review Jon and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one. Have a great weekend. Cheers.
Thank you for dropping in, I hope you had a dram of something good this weekend too!
I've got the 20 year that I picked up 4 years ago. For the price I paid at the time it was pretty good but I agree with you saying there are better sherry cask bottles out there. Nice job Jon, cheers!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the 20!
I'm surprised it was that sharp at 18 years. Great review my friend.
Me too, which is why I may have over emphasized it. Just because it surprised me.
Saw the Kirkland 18 in Calgary last week. I was tempted but ultimately passed. I think the 19 last year was the same price and the 22 before that was cheaper too. I wonder if these Kirkland Sherry releases will keep getting younger age statements for higher prices (relative to age).
It is a reflection of the market. I purchased that 24 year old for exactly the same price only a year ago :(
Hiya Jon!
Isn't Kirkland branded through Costco? Obviously they can't carry it here in Ontario. I have been curious about their offerings. From what you're saying today, I'd likely take a risk on the 24...if I could find it.
Inspired by this series, I dipped back into my Jura 18. It was just plain awful when I first got it, but after two-and-a-half years open on the shelf it has improved vastly. I'll never buy the brand again, though I will finish it off at some point. Mostly I've been blending it with some of the younger Juras, just to elevate them a bit, which definitely helps!
Speaking of sherry bombs, I picked up the Lindores Abbey, Casks of Lindores Oloroso Sherry Butts finished whisky in Quebec. Wasn't sure what to expect as it's NAS and Lowland, but it's lovely! Rather like chewing sherry soaked figs and dates, sultanas and prunes, lovely scented tobacco and old leather. Rich texture, 49.4%, non chill filtered, natural colour. Ah, that colour!!! Definitely moreish. I've got to stop reaching for it, as I won't be able to get it again until we get back to QC. Even at $105, it's been worth it!
And again, I digress...😉
Cheers to you, cheers to the weekend, cheers to us all! 🥃🥃🥃

Wow!! That Lindors Abby sounds amazing! I love a thick Sherry whisky like that. I can relate to the stop reaching for" one of the reasons why my shelves seem to hold on to mediocre whisky! Enjoy the weekend 🥃🥃
8:34 I dont know much about these relatively cheap high aged single malts from Kirkland, but it is a bit curious that a 24 year old single malt only gets a 4 and a quarter star. Might I guess that the cask maturation is not of highest quality?
It is a 5 star scale, and always subjective (just my opinion) At 4 and a quarter, it is well placed for me. A good Scotch and worth trying.
@@WhiskyNeighbour I wish I can find it!
Interesting, not available in Sweden unfortunately 😢
That is unfortunate. These are good malts, and affordable here.
I’d sure love to be the Costco buyer responsible for sourcing their whiskies. I usually like Kirkland brand stuff but I’ve never been impressed with the whisky selections. I would get exactly what everyone wants.
Lol! Or at least what we would like to see! I think there is a disconnect between whisky people, and general drinkers.
@@WhiskyNeighbour yes I know but I would urge Costco to have a small premium offering. With their buying power they could pull it off. Cask strength NC/NCF. I would make sure of it.
Jon, really enjoyed their 22 year but was disappointed how blah and thin the 23 year was in comparison.
Cool insight. I think the series is still a good journey. Anyone of the releases, but there are some stand outs for sure!
gotta say, maybe I'm probably the odd ball out, but I like to see you swoosh the whisky in your mouth and here it swallowed, I guess im an unedited kinda guy😃
Lol! I do not script, or redo, but I do cut to try to keep around 10 to 12 minutes if I can. Seemed like the actual drinking and mouth sounds would be a good thing to go!
@@WhiskyNeighbour ha, no for me, that should be the last thing to go, if at all! :D
