Woohoo my official bastardizing!!! No worries no one ever gets my name right. I do agree with rex about the finish, but liked that. I presented as a bitter dark chocolate note to me. For 50 bucks though, this was amazing stuff.
As a Dutch native speaker, I have to give it to Daniel, though. Your name would sound something like Ver (as in 'fur' but with a v) Stra (as in 'Stra' from strata) te (as in 'the)
@@AzNLogiK yup. I found the fruit notes to be a bit deeper and and richer. Some honey sweetness, and a very mild sherry spice. It's actually the mostmmild sherrybslice I've encountered yet.
A small correction guys, this specific bottling was $50. It's not available any more but there are other Kirkland single malts via alexander Murray and they're typically around 50-60 bucks.
Fuckin' Costco in Ontario doesn't carry alcohol. Although if it did it would be so heavily taxed it probably wouldn't be a great buy. Argh. I hate monopolized liquor.
Thank you so much for the shout out! Big smile here :). I'll try and find you something nice scotch wise but sending it to you from the U.K. is *expensive*.
Hey Rex and Daniel, I very recently lost my mother to cancer and I thought it might be nice to get a nice bottle of whisk[e]y on her birthday that I open every year on that date. Redbreast 12 is the reason I began to fall in love thanks to you guys. I was thinking maybe just getting Redbreast 21 since it is more relevant to my journey with whisky. However, I was wondering if you guys think it is worth the price point or maybe if there is something even more magical you have in mind?
For Valentine’s Day my girlfriend got me a cabinet for my whiskey. I showed her the previous episode. She says I am not allowed to have as many bottles as you guys...but she never put a specific limit. Anyways, we both dig your channel. Ive had Angels Envy, Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve. I’d love any suggestions.
Man, was hoping this was the 12 yr Kirkland scotch they carry... I have really enjoyed that one. Have not seen the 18 yr, or anything above 12 for that matter. But I have to travel 3 hrs to Missouri for the nearest Costco. KS doesn't sell liquor in regular stores
This might be a dumb question, but I’m having a hard time finding the answer. Since bourbon is a fairly new product compared to scotch, when did the regulations come about that say scotch must be aged in used barrels? My main question is, has scotch always been aged in used bourbon barrels, and if not, what did they use before bourbon was a “thing”?
FYI. For all you Michiganders, (or thoes close) Kirkland Liquor products are Available in some Michigan Liquor stores. I was told if Kirkland (Costco)sells said product it HAS to be available state wide...
laplantski yes a local store ordered some but they don’t charge state minimum like Costco. Also I’m not sure the distributor has to make it available. I mean not every gets pappy right.
@@lordgarth1 The liquor store that we found it in was right on point with Costco on price. Although They only had Vodka, Scotch, Bourbon and GIN. They were also the ones that said, if Costco sells it in MI it HAS to be available to other retailers. It sounded reasonable, who knows??
laplantski take a trip to Indiana. Much cheaper for the same things especially at Costco and places like Meijer. $100 less for JW Blue in IN over MI at Costco.
@@lordgarth1YES!! I hit up Gays ( a liquor chain) in Indiana about once a month. They have some killer deals. Im in Ohio so at least i dont have to pay the crazy MI prices. Not only is their tax higher, unlike Ohio they can basically charge whatever they want.
@@lordgarth1 Im a Bourbon guy mostly. I do an annual trip to the motherland down south every year. So i get a large amount of mah juice for the season then...l0l.
I like myself a dram of the Kirkland x Alexander Murray single malts. They have age statements of 18-22 Years and are available in Speyside or Highland. I’d be interested if they did a Islam release, maybe one day. Cheers 🥃 - Patrick
I can always count on my father-in-law to have a bottle of Scotch waiting for me whenever I have a chance to visit. On our last visit, my wife and I made a not insignificant dent in a bottle of Kirkland 25 Year Old Speyside Single Malt.
This one is $55 at Costco not 30(I wish). And it is a recasked Macallan in my opinion. My group compared it to Mac 18, Rare Cask, Estate reserve and 12 and there was no doubt in our opinion that this is Macallan. It is 3% above the other macallans so it hits a bit harder, it is great stuff. I asked the local Costco guy and he stated that even though they cannot say, my opinion was right. He also stated that the 20 year they carried was may or may not be Mortlach, hint. There is a new 18 Kirkland with a green label that is totally different than this one. In fact that one to me tastes more like Mortlach. I did not ask about the new 18 but it does taste similar to the 20.
I have the Kirkland 18 speyside, 18 Highland, 20 speyside, and a general 27 year old bottles. Thank you. Please let me know if you have already reviewed the Kirland 20yr speyside. I would be more than pleased to get one and mail it to you.
Chad, this is for you. I recently upgraded to a shiny new PC. And with it a 4k monitor. Well, your part in this is to upgrade to 4k videos, capish? Thanks in advance. Love you!
I bought the Kirkland 20-year speyside and unfortunately I was rather disappointed. It was rather harsh with a lot of burn in the finish. I should have saved a few bucks and maybe gone with the 18? I would welcome input from any other viewers who have tried the 20-year Kirkland's speyside.
Hello Dan and Rex, somm and mooch! Will you guys be trying any of the new Mortlach lineup? I've tried the 16 and personally feel it's second only to Glenfarclas in terms of Speyside single malts! Also, Daniel can you recommend any good international whisky distributors? I'm an amateur reviewer from Canada and it can be hard to find certain vintages up here. PS. Comparison video between Aberlour 12 and Aberlour 12 Non-Chill Filtered? Rex would love a mooch of the Non-Chill Filtered version...
The Kirkland stuff is great bang for the buck. And, depending on local market, can have some insane deals for big brands as well as occasional rarities. I got immensely lucky and scored a bottle of old rip van winkle 10 yr for 60 bucks back in december.
Let's not underestimate the alcohol aisle of Costco. You don't even need a membership to buy alcohol from club stores like Costco (in California, maybe a few other states as well). So when I want to buy a bottle of Hendricks Gin, I go to costco and save $30-40 compared to bevmo.
I'm so bummed, I too cannot get this whisky a my Costco because Montana has really, REALLY stupid laws that make a license to sell spirits a couple million dollars.
@whiskyvault. Which 🥃 would you prefer/ recommend for someone who is new to the game:) & like really sweet smooth non smoki aftertaste or note 🥃 for a cosy Saturday evening!😂😀 🙏!
The way Daniel describes it , is the same way he describes Dalmore. And all the ducks line up as Alexander Murray does do Dalmore releases regularly and Dalmore is bourbon matured and then moved to sherry. Plus that walnut and waxy as he says... maybe

My local Costco has Pallettes Full of this juice. I've been passing it up for months. May pick up a bottle now!

There should be a video compilation of rex through the years. The hair transformations alone would be hilarious.
Crazy, I had just picked up the Kirkland 20yr Speyside tonight before seeing today’s video. Very nice on the first dram.
Love that shot of Daniel making him look even shorter.... Hah
One of my favorite Kirkland products, especially in Korean Costco!
Had a bottle of 18 yr in 2020 for approximately $55. I greatly enjoyed it and would buy again. Probably go for the 20 yr if available. Great value

More in the $50 range in Illinois. The 20 year is tasty too.
The Kirkland 20 yr blew the 18 yr out of the water for me. And I'm not a sherry fan in the least. Both were very good, especially for the price.
I agree!!!!
i will third this. the 18 is amazing. the 20YO is pure magic. it is a very different profile though. the 20 is more cherry tobacco and leather.
I was just at Costco yesterday and picked up a bottle of the 18-year-old Costco for 70 bucks that’s in San Jose
