Great review on the Dongar adapter and happy to know I do have a dimming rear view mirror. Next choice is which cam, and now I am leaning towards NexC1 over your Garmin. Great review. I got the Scosche NEXC1 -- nice camera, but you're right about the cable being a huge bundle which is kinda hard to stuff away behind the mirror. It's made to be routed behind the headliner down to a fuse box. I may cut it and resplice.

Thanks Chloe. I found your channel when I was looking for dashcam power ideas a couple of months ago. I got one of the Dongar Tech adapters, and it has been working great. My dashcam (a Vantrue X4) has a powered quick release mount for the camera, and the power cord goes from the Dongar to the mount, so it's easy to take the camera out from the mount when I don't want to leave it in the sun. I'm in San Diego as well.
Hi Chloe..... on the one hand, its a great product.... on the other hand, it requires an "auto dimming mirror" (mirror must have power outlet)!!!!!.....not every vehicular rear-view mirror provides a power source......

Good follow up review, I was wondering if it had continuous power for parking mode. You answered that. I think I’m gonna hardwire to the fuse box with a front and rear facing camera since I park mine in the driveway. Too many bikes and shorter cars in the garage. Check out the viofo A129 duo.
I have a 2022 Tacoma sport and just started watching your videos. I plan to purchase this very soon. I’m also looking to get seat covers and add heated seats. My drivers seat is power. Is there an adaptor like this that would plug into power seat with a universal seat heater or the one from clazzio which I’m looking at. I really don’t want to tear up the center consul and dash to power the heated seats. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the heads up on the overheating issue , I just picked up a garmin mini 2 and wasn’t planning on using the parking mode, but now I’ll make sure to definitely not to use it ,… I’d love to get my hands on a Dongar adapror , unfortunately I have a 2nd generation Tacoma and need the 14 pin adaptor and I can’t find one for the life of me , everywhere I turn they are sold out , eBay, Amazon, dongar , Craigslist , Facebook market place ,.. I’ve pretty much run out of places to track one down,… any ideas ?
I just installed this cam and adapter in my Tacoma, works just like you said. But there has to be a better solution than having all that cord stored behind the mirror. Seems the cam maker could better develop tge connections for better hookups.
@mne I thought about going with this one too but the fact they make you use that long cord is stopping me from converting to it. Everyone is looking for ways to not have cords and they make these they restrict you to super long ones. Seems like bad company decisions

Just curious to make sure everything has been good with your dongar setup after a year. Do either of these dashcams come on by themselves when you start the vehicle or do you always have to turn them on? The Garmin doesn't have GPS but I believe the NEXC1 does. Can you shut off the GPS features? There are times when having your own speed burned into your recording could be a BAD thing!

Thanks! Although I haven't really looked into a rear camera, the scosche dash cam would work well as a rear too. Although now that I'm thinking about it, mounting and then wiring it cleanly might be tricky since I'm not sure where the closest power source is to the back of the cab. You'd probably have to go under the headliner. That's a good idea for a future video haha!

Hey girl hey I was wondering if you’re having trouble connecting to your camera’s wifi. I have an iPhone and just got the garmin mini 2. I was able to connect through BT no issues, I even connected my camera to my home wifi so it can utilize the vault or whatever it wants to do but when trying to view the live view it prompts that the drive app wants to connect to dc mini 2 wifi. I press join and then it tells me it’s unable to connect. I tried for about 2 hours and still go nothing. Any advice ?

Hi! To be honest, I didn’t bring much else except the stuff I had from college because the trip was planned so last minute! I guess my suggestions are to bring a gas container, tire jack, make sure you are on a route where you can make adequate gas stops, and if you can bring someone else with you, it’s always a lot easier. Sounds like it’ll be a great trip and good luck!
Does the dash cam automatically turn on every time when you turn on the car, or do you have to hit a button to start recording? I’m not familiar with dash cams at all but would love to have this if it turns on and records every ride, even if it’s to the gas station and back. Thanks
The Garmin mini 2 dash cam turns on when you turn your car on and immediately starts recording (provided you have the power cable plugged into the dash cam and plugged into either the cigarette lighter or the auto-dimming rearview mirror with the donger adaptor.)
How is the new cam still working out? Going back and forth between the two. I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews about the scocshe not connecting to app and it not recording anything
My Scosche one never had issues connecting to the app, it seemed to work fine. I’m back to running the garmin mini temporarily only because a friend wanted to test out the Scosche one. They both do the job in my opinion, but the biggest difference is that the Scosche one seems to output video in higher quality, while the garmin is more hidden.
Hi Chloe! Quick question. When the car is turned off, does the power supply from the mirror stay on, thus the camera still works when the Taco is parked?

Thank you! I personally haven't experienced those issues so I'm not really sure how other people have caused them. I've measured the voltage coming off of the USB on the adapter a few times, and it's always looked normal to me.
Are you talking about the seat covers? I'm really excited about that project but it's taking longer than I expected unfortunately. But I will make a dedicated video on them in the future!

Yes, mine stores about 3-4 hours of footage and loop records by deleting the oldest footage first, unless you specifically choose to save it through the app
Have you had any issues with the adapter? I had one in my taco and one day there was a burnt smell which was coming from the adapter. The adapter was really hot to the touch so I took the adapter off.
Adapter works with a GoPro too! For those who aren't interested in a dash cam, you can wire a GoPro instead if you wanted off road footage or something like that.
OBD 5v power w/switch is about the best option. It's not that hard to push wiring out of the way. It's full time power also, so you want one with a switch.
Great idea, but Dongar could have done a far better job producing the product. I was just on their site. I mean sticking some heat shrink around the device is kind of...well no further comment. I ran my Mini cabling along the headliner, down the A-pillar trim and down in behind the glove compartment. No big deal.

I love the donger adaptor, you can use it for dash cams, but also for things like radar detectors as well.
Your previous video is the reason I now have the Dongar adapter in my truck.
