    We have a game with unique skills that are generally not worth their cost and a game where all of the mastery skills are free and just overkill in most cases.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  6 лет назад +45

      Both games didn't do a great job of handling mastery skills, and for the exact opposite reasons. It's an interesting case study of two ways you can make an ability in a game bad: don't make it good enough, or make it too good.

    I mean, if I can say one positive: at least they're varied in this game. Unlike RD, where basically every single one of them is "triples strength/damage" with a secondary effect that you probably won't see because you basically just crit the enemy.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  6 лет назад +16

      Exactly. RD's looked cool, but were pretty boring in effect. The variety here was a lot more interesting, they just could've made some of these more useful.
      There's also unused data suggesting Wyvern Lords would've had their own Occult Skill instead of sharing Stun. I wonder what it would've been.

    • @SSBBPOKEFAN
      @SSBBPOKEFAN 6 лет назад +6

      My idea for a Wyvern Lord occult skill would be Skill% chance for 1.5 times damage plus poison. Wyverns are stated in some folklores to have poison breath, and why not have the wyvern mount join in on the battle?

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  6 лет назад +13

      Giving them a poisoning attack would both make sense and be kind of interesting. You rarely get poison on your side in FE games.

    • @nuredingeziqi679

      ideally, most of there would have been pretty balanced had they been free in PoR
      They don't kill and they might be terrible nonetheless, but they were the unexpected factor that could have helped whenever it happened.
      NOt all of them though, obviously. Some would need some tweeking too for this to be actually balanced, but I'd consider this better than "Special Skill: death with extras" and how they are just useless for the most part here

  • @petrie911
    @petrie911 5 лет назад +19

    So I think you have the effect of Colossus wrong. Its activation condition is the unit's Build being greater than the opponent, not Weight. This is relevant for mounted units because their Build doesn't include the weight of their mount. I just tested this and Boyd was able to Colossus Petrine, who weighs quite a bit more than him on her horse but has lower Con. The second is that it doesn't boost damage by 25%, but instead adds 25% of Str to damage (including when he's using the Bolt Axe or Bright Bow). This is done after damage calculation, so if he's dealing 0 damage (probably because you gave him the Bolt Axe or Bright Bow for some reason), he still gets the full colossus boost. Of course, since Boyd and the other guy cap Str at 30, this is just a 7 damage boost. Not exactly groundbreaking.
    None of this explains why Boyd has a -2 base Build modifier in class whose mastery skill requires high Build, which is why he can't Colossus other Warriors even with the Statue Frag.
    On another note, it appears Ashnard and BK's armor prevent mastery skills other than Aether from activating on them. I was trying to test if maybe Colossus would let Boyd damage them due to faulty programming, but it never triggered even when the RNG should have been good for it. Edited Aether onto him and it worked just fine (though he still did no damage). So that's neat.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  5 лет назад +4

      SerenesForest might have had the effects of Colossus wrong. I wouldn't blame them since it's a pretty bad skill and isn't used much. Makes sense it'd work based off Build and not Weight, though I think that still means most Feral Ones are immune to it. And 25% of Strength is even worse than 1.25x damage.

    • @petrie911
      @petrie911 5 лет назад +3

      @@BigKlingy Serenes seems to have it right aside from the interaction with the Bolt Axe ("If user’s Con > enemy’s Con, multiplies Strength by 1.25." Con and Build are the same thing). Both wikis also get the trigger right, but they think it's 1.25x damage.
      It'll work on the bird feral ones (they have low Build), but not the beasts or dragons.
      25% of Str is better against enemies that have more Def than your weapon's Mt. Can't really remember how common that is in PoR, though it's probably true of most of the high Build enemies that the skill doesn't work on. Solid game design, IS.

    My last playthrough I had Occults lying around and so I gave one to Rolf because he was the only one with the capacity, and I was impressed by Deadeye. My Rolf tended to have hitrates in the 80s, and I like using longbows which drive that further down, and the guaranteed hit is actually really, really nice.
    He also put an enemy to sleep in a useful way once or twice, maybe. That part wasn't as important.

    • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy  6 лет назад +1

      I guess the accuracy boost helps sometimes, I just usually find that he and Rolf don't need help hitting things.

    • @GKoopa
      @GKoopa 6 лет назад +4

      For sure. I don't remember exactly but Rolf might've been skill screwed.
      If the skill had the exact same function in RD it would actually be pretty nice because of the inherent -30 accuracy penalty you take for attacking at 3 range.

    A lot of those skills just fall under the "may as well" syndrome, since for several units, that's all they get. Jill may get two scrolls, or she may get Stun. Rolf may get Deadeye. Mist may get Sol. Ike WILL get Aether. Anyone with a decent pre-obtained skill will likely keep it and maybe one other scroll skill.

    I disagree on Deadeye being a bad skill. It helped me in multiple chapters and it also helped me dick on Naesala. Sure enough, double hitrate sounds unnecessary but it's a goodie on top of the main feature which is putting an enemy to sleep pretty much forever. This helps weaker units who haven't benefited from B.EXP to get kills, too. I think it makes much sense, considering that archers are supposed to support their teammates over trying to get kills alone.

    Considering how underwhelming most of the mastery skills are, I actually consider Deadeye to be good.
    Because you know what "overkill" accuracy is good against? Swordmasters and beast tribe laguz. Even with high base accuracy, these unit types have pretty high avoid, high enough for a skill-capped Rolf to have trouble reliably hitting depending on the weapon equipped. But with Deadeye, it's really cathartic to see a listed 100 hit against those units. And with that, the sleep chance becomes relevant, particularly against tigers and dragons.

  • @Tentaku64
    @Tentaku64 6 лет назад +1

    I guess I'll share my opinions on the occult skills but overall there pretty similar to yours
    (Aether) Really good. Probably the easiest choice to use for the Black Knight fight.
    (Sol) If you are using a Paladin, GIVE IT TO THEM!! Pretty much one of the few good occult skills.
    (Luna) Like you said, mainly recommended for armored knights.
    (Astra) It's alright but there are better skills that use up less capacity. It's also annoying how much it can unnecessarily use up weapon durability.
    (Flare) It could've been useful if the enemy's resistance are already low to begin with.
    (Colossus) The skill only works on enemy units where you don't even need extra damage on. It's practically useless.
    (Stun) Bad, bad,BAD!!! Why would you ever rely on luck to give an enemy a status ailment.
    (Deadeye)Shinon's accuracy isn't that great when you get him back from chapter 19 so the accuracy boost isn't that useless for him at least. That's the only use I can think of it's that bad.
    (Lethality) Not worth using if you're using Volke to be honest. Assassin is tied to Snipers for having the highest skill cap out of every playable beorc class. A 30% chance to activate skills such as Adept or Guard can be useful and Resolve can make the chances even higher as well as alleviate the damage output issue.
    (Roar) It's... situational but I still think it's underated. In situations where you can't kill an enemy but you don't want them to cause any damage, Roar can have value. It's still not the best option but imo it's the only status inflicting skill done right but that's not saying much.
    (Cancel) Great skill, just sadly held back by it's users.

    A lot of Mastery Skills sucking in this game is quite ironic when it to Radiant Dawn where since they gave Mastery Skills to any unit that 3rd tier automaticity while also making it so every Mastery counted as a critical when it activated. Making it so that instead of the effect being the main draw of most Mastery Skills it’s the automatic crit that works of your Skill stat alone and is not influenced by the enemies Luck. As most enemies won’t live to see most of the effects.
    I like the celestial theme naming associated with Sol, Luna, Astra and maybe Flare. Just feels cool. Although it is quite weird to see Sol on Paladins as I associate it more with Hero’s. In fact I may be wrong but wasn’t Sol almost entirely used by Sword users before this with the exception of Gaiden’s Sol weapon.
    Colossus just seems to suck in general as the enemies you would want to use it on happen to prevent its activations entirely.
    With Stun the only thing you’re really stopping the enemy from doing is moving to try and pick off inits behind the user.
    A damage nullifying skill being on a class that isn’t that tanky. Not something you see everyday.
    Lethality is so much fun when it activates. One thing I observed is that in Awakening despite being a skill/4 chance of activating it actually has a better chance of activating there as considering that Assassin has a 48 skill cap so any character within the Assassin class will have 11-12.5% chance of activating it normally. And unlike here it is not reliant on getting a critical from a class with no crit bonus and no Killer Weapon equivalent. At least FE7 and FE8 had Killer Weapons to increase the chance and Fates at the bare minimum when it comes to capped stats has a 9.5% chance of consistently activating. (Not counting Cap Statues as I am merely pointing out how at bare minimum the chance of Lethality is slightly better in that game and since Lodestar has the highest Skill stat but was DLC I didn’t count it).
    Aether is useful no matter what game it is from as who doesn’t want a skill that heals you and increase damage at the same time. In Heroes I tend to find it has some problems since 5 on the Special Gauge means it takes a few battles to kick in during which time the enemy would have been dead by Luna or you would have more healing with Sol. hence I feel to be very useful it needs something to accelerate the Special Gauge. Which all three versions of Ike have in someway.
    And talking about Heroes and be topical I just got some new 5 Star Heroes from the Legendary Banner. Valentine Lyn, a rare armoured tome user who is quite fast for being an armoured unit and comes with Armour Marcy so she is going on my Armour team immediately. Although it is quite funny that somebody wearing a not especially heavy dress counts as Armoured. Female Morgan who I have wanted for a while and she is flying tome user and I didn’t have any of those before. Plus Female Morgan is one of my favourite characters from Awakening and her design being a combination of Tactician and Dark Flier classes is pretty neat. Her skill set is meant to pretty much designed to fight offensive Mages which gives her a good niche. And then we have Legendary Hector.
    Just seeing what that this guy was the Legendary Hero gave me the idea that he is going to be controversial. As Hector has had 3 variants so far and they all seem to build off the other. Regular Hector can double if attacked at a certain threshold of HP. Valentines Hector has ways to accelerate the Special Trigger and one of his skills prevents doubling from the opponent and himself but with that speed. Legendary Hector combines the doubling if attacked when above a certain threshold and Special Gauge acceleration with Vengeful Fighter and the HP threshold for the skill being deactivated is lower in this case. And his weapon prevents enemy doubling but it merely requires more allies to be closer to him than the enemies. Which can be done quite easily and doesn’t deactivate at certain HP thresholds. Hectors current three variants not only are the exact same unit type but each new version power creeps the others and makes them partially obsolete as their skill sets are very similar. Say what you want as with all of Tharja,s variants being Red Tome users at the very least they all have way different skill sets and one is of a different movement type than the others. I don’t mind it but I can understand why somebody would be annoyed.
    And then we have the fact that due to the fact that Brave Hector is very likely less than 2 months away we have a case of a hero gaining 2 alts in the span of less than 2 months. Although we don’t know when the developers decided to have Legendary Hector be a thing so him getting 2 alts that close together might be just a massive coincidence as Brave Hector as a concept is only slightly under 5 months old at this point. Legendary Hector might have been planned before then and he just happened to be a winner of Choose Your Legends 2 which caused such closeness in release. Sorry for the massive tangent.
    When I rewatch some of your older content I might write some comments as I only really got the confidence to actually comment recently.

    • @BigKlingy

      Mastery Skills in RD might as well all be named "Enemy Instantly Dies". Except Sothe's, which makes him pretty bad later on.
      Sol, Luna and Astra all used to be exclusive to sword users, their names were even "Sunlight Blade", "Moonlight Blade" and "Starlight Blade" originally. They dropped the "blade" part in this game, at least in the Japanese version. I still tend to associate Sol with Paladins because this was the game that introduced the skill to me.
      You're basically right with Colossus.
      Lethality's max activation rate here is very similar to what it is in Awakening, the difference is there it's fully Skill based so the enemy's Luck doesn't factor in to it. Here, you're not likely to see 12.5% Lethality rates most of the time.
      Kind of weird hawks get something so defensive as their skill, but it's decent.
      I actually don't mind Legendary Hector. He doesn't yet have as many variants as Lyn. I was hoping he'd be a different unit type or use a sword though. We're probably getting Sword Hector as his BH version.
      I spend 80 Orbs on this banner so far... and got nothing.

    Honestly, considering how easy this game gets in the 2nd half, 20 capacity for a really cool animation isn't that bad. Especially Lethality. It's like Volke gets dizzy with all the power, lol
    Ugh why is Stun Skill/2% !? It should be be 100% activation considering it doesn't even give a damage bonus!

  • @ResurgentRaven
    @ResurgentRaven 9 месяцев назад +1

    Personally I thought that Sol was pretty garbage just based on how much it would activate on latter hits than the first hit.
    Most of the time Kieran would always get 5-10ish HP back, which is okay since Vulneraries are your main source of healing, but he just couldn't kill anything.
    Meanwhile, Luna is good on Nephenee since her strength isn't stellar and despite her already having Wrath, which is good enough on its own, Luna can serve as a more safe option since it doesn't require an HP threshold.
    Flare is honestly terrible. Mostly used as a mage killer but you might as well use a physical unit for that.
    Colossus is the worst in the game. Has an activation threshold, and its damage potential is awful.
    Astra is... interesting to say the least. It's solid if you need it, but considering Mia has Vantage, Zihark has Adept, and Lucia is a terrible unit, you probably won't be slapping it on them.
    Deadeye is solid because unlike Stun it can actually render the target inactive. The accuracy boost is also nice.
    Lethality is similar to Astra. If you want it, good, it'll make Volke essentially a time bomb. If not, I doubt you'll lose much.
    Stun is tied for Colossus for being the worst in the game. Freezes the target in place and that's basically it. And it's such a small payoff for that activation rate.
    Roar/Cancel: Never really had experience with either of these. Roar is like Deadeye, and Cancel is basically FE4s Great Shield.
    Make of that what you will.
    It's hard to believe these skills got such a massive buff when transferred to Radiant Dawn. Except for Aether, but Aether was already a beefy skill to begin with.

    I wonder if leanne would have been playable, then she would need an occult scroll.
    Man, colossus would have been so much better if it triggered when the opponent's weight was greater. Imagine giving boyd a pole axe equipped with that.

      She might have. Although she didn't even have the chant skill as an NPC. There IS a scroll for that coded into the game, but it's programmed to only work on TRANSFORMED Herons, and seeing as Laguz can't transform at the base it's impossible to use.
      Colossus fits with the theme of its classes, but it's not all that practical. It looks kind of cool though.
      Vortex is interesting, it's a shame they didn't make more command activation skills like that.

    Here you are talking about how great Aether is, and here I am laughing at watching Shinon get bodied over and over. I've decided to go with the Wrath/Resolve combo on Ike for the final boss, but throughout the game, I've never had my Ike take enough damage to be in Wrath range, so the one part of the combo that's around for longer has literally done nothing for me. I'm thinking I should have gone with Aether after all. I know Wrath/Resolve is extremely useful once it's available, but it's barely available in the first place.
    Sol is great, but most Paladins are pretty bulky anyway. The amount of times Oscar activated Sol when he literally didn't need it...
    Stefan... triggered Astra on one of the laguz in the desert in my run. They got wrecked. I forgot that unequipping your characters' stuff was a thing at the time, so RIP BEXP.

    This iteration of Colossus has to be the stupidest idea for a class skill I’ve ever seen. Automatically fails against things like generals, wyvern riders, and Laguz who you might really like bonus damage on, but hey, at least you’ve got a ~20% chance to turn your 20 damage against a myrmidon into...25. There's only a few RD Occult skills that don't work like this (Whisper's Bane), and I don't feel there's much point in discussing them since you automatically learn them on promoting to 3rd tier so there's no real limitations as to who to teach them to.
