    I love personal skills. They add a ton of character to units while interacting with mechanics in (usually) interesting ways. As such, I thought it would be cool to theroycraft personal skills for all of the games that don't already have them. I did Fire Emblem 4 and 5 a while ago, and now I'm tackling my first ever FE game, Path of Radiance. Since this is the first game I've covered with full supports, I can get much more into their characters and assign skills that fit their personality and story role. The goal isn't so much "balance" as it is "fun" and "flavor", though if something can help make a unit more enjoyable to use, its a nice bonus.

    Volke’s makes plenty enough sense in the context of the game, his “promotion” is basically exactly this already. Ike pays him 50k and he gains a permanent stat buff while saying “btw I’m actually an assassin”. I think the only change I would make is to give him something else after promotion, since he’s implied to be fighting seriously at that point anyways.

      Like, his only support is with Bastion... So unless you want to build around that, I'd say just a flat critical hit or damage bonus with help with his dagger-locked class. Maybe even giving him proficiency in swords?

    Volke's ability would be so sick conceptually, I love it! And we've seen the inverse with Hugh's FE6 recruitment (the less you pay, the worse he performs), so I don't even think it's that wild of a turn or anything.
    Also, I don't normally take notice of typos, but I'm fycking dying at Mist's "Gentile Natured" lmao. She's just has a base convo where she's like "Ike, I just don't *get* Passover"

    My suggestion for Bastian is one based on the liberties taken in translation, but I think it would still work in other languages: "Iambic Pentameter. +10 crit while wielding a weapon whose name is exactly 10 characters long."

      yeah it's for forges. it's like odin's personal in the fates games but more specific because of bastian's habit of using the aforementioned rhyme scheme rather than just liking long names

    My thought with Mist would be something to do with Biorhythm since she is attuned to order-perhaps neutralizing the negative effects of bad biorhythm for allies within a certain radius? That also would synergize well with Boyd’s default skill Tempest, which doubles effects. Since Mist and Boyd have that strong connection and he (especially in RD) acts very differently around her, that could be something.

      This is a great idea! Get players to care about biorythm instead of glazing over trying to work around it or ignoring it.

    My favorite little quirk about personal skills is that it's a nice way to differentiate characters without risk of softlocks by losing specific units. The Tellius games could ditch biorhythm altogether in favour of personal skills and i think it'd work nicely!

    These are skills for JUST PoR right? I really feel like Ike's ability should change in RD, since he IS a "real" leader there.

    I thought of giving Mist 2x weapon experience because it's both somewhat flavorful (she seems to have learned to use staves crazy fast) and somewhat useful (specifically to get her to Swords-B, and therefore Sonic Sword, faster), but then Nephenee got that on this list so now I am again at a loss
    although something affecting status does also kind of resonate with her inner wellspring of Order and innate ability to resist going berserk from touching Lehran's Medallion... hmmmm.

    I would rename Ike's personal skill to "Heir to Greatness" since many of his struggles and relationships are defined by he measures up against his father.

    Since brom is our almighty lord and saviour i have a proposal for a more lore accurate skill
    Brom: lord’s punishment
    Brom gains a one time use of the brom blast at the start of each map, instantly smites a single enemy and deals 50% to bosses
    A fitting skill for lord almighty brom

    For an actually useful ability for Mist a personal skill that makes damage with all swords magical and based off her magic stat would make her actually a little useful for combat. I can't think of a way to tie that with her outside of either Greil or the Medallion but It would actually make Mist a unit that might deal more than 0 damage for once.

      Radiant Dawn answers your call. She has a personal weapon that uses her magic stat. However, I'm pretty sure it still deals physical damage. Makes her useful against magical enemies, though
      Edit: Never mind, apparently the in-game text is wrong😅

    For context on Dwyer’s personal skill: he gets a big buff when doing a MyCastle battle, something only accessible through the online features 😔

    These videos are so much fun, I love seeing what you come up with because you genuinely make the characters and abilities really distinct while still feeling cool.

    That was fun. The one thing that came to mind immediately was adding being attacked by a Bow to Marcia's skill (perhaps even if it misses?). As a Pegasus Knight, that would be as much cause to have a freakout.
    Looking forward to the RD one when it eventually comes around.

    It seems weird to give Lucia an in-battle skill when her native Parity will just disable it. Also, Bastian's seems to be the same as Shinon's, which is odd. I appreciate the focus on flavour, though - that's what I think personal skills should be about!

    I do want to mention wrt to the Laguz Royal availability that Naesala is present as an enemy in chapter 19 and Tibarn is a green unit in 17-4 and a Yellow unit in Chapter 28 and you would be able to use all three on the trial maps (I don't think the Trial Map only characters need personal skills). So there would be opportunities for them to see use

    really interesting and creative ideas, I think it would be cool to see this implemented in the form of a rom hack. Stefan's personal skill is cool and not overpowered for the condition it imposes, it did give me the idea that another personal skill he could have would grant him the ability to perform a triangle attack on an enemy if surrounded by another beorc and laguz. This is pretty silly, but I love triangle attack and just want to see it as much as possible lol

    RE: Volke- while PoR predates tonics, 1000gp is the same as buying four tonics, and Volke really only cares about str and spd for his utility. it's not that out there.
    RE: Jill- i think the skill is good but the name is bad. I'd name it something like "Daein Trained" or "Foreign Tactics" to emphasize Jill's skill with fighting laguz comes from Daein's institutionalized racism. "On the Hunt" works great for Jill on time of recruitment but also undermines her arc as she progresses through the game. I'd also consider granting hit/avoid and not damage for the skill, but that's a nitpick.

    Mist's personal should also make her immune to Berserk since that's her whole thing with respect to the medallion. granted this is giga niche since I think there's only like 2 enemies that have that staff but still

    I think the solution to the Gotoh Skills conundrum would be to design the skill and some chapters of the game around having the gotoh around as a green/yellow unit. Maybe an aura buff to those around them and add them to some extra tough chapters throughout the game kind of like how Tibarn shows up in key chapters throughout this game.

    For Kieren I was really expecting a mirror to Oscars skill where he gets +15 Crit either below or above 50% Hp. I think it would fit his personality well and also Sydney’s well with gamble.

      But seriously while thinking of personals for Makalov while watching this video, I thought of this one:
      "Irresponsible: Makalov will perform a guaranteed critical hit when his weapon breaks."
      Obviously, Makalov is an awful wretch who can barely take care of himself, yet against the odds he never seems to face any consequences. In fact, he kind of gets rewarded for it. Embracing his chaotic and selfish nature, he can unleash a devastating attack when his weapon breaks. It's also funny to imagine his debt increasing as he breaks more and more equipment in battle. I think this works well for his character but also it gives him a really interesting niche where you can hand him all your nearly busted weapons and he can dispose of them in a powerful and effective manner. He's almost like the well from Engage this way, recycling used up items for the army.

    Boyds is so damn bad, why would I want to use him if it accentuates his downsides? It's like Arthur from Fates having even less Dodge, I never use him because I might have to restart from constant crit chances.
    I understand why you want it to be flavor over function, but it's so bad I'd bench him, because axe users aren't very tanky and he can't double people on enemy phase. He's a player phase guy

    The fact that Illyaina Chugging Leftover Vulnerarys is not the most in-character thing shows how much you love this cast. Like she would Slurp the drops off the dirt. I am imagining it and it is blursed.

    Honestly I love Volke’s skill. Would have changed it to +5 STR, SPD, and SKL though just to do a big boost to his offense.
    Someone mentioned that his promotion also counts as him “actually trying”. So maybe when he promotes, the Skill changes to just “+30 crit”. I realize that’s a lot of crit, but knives have shit MT anyways.

    I really love what you decided on with Muarim. It definitely makes sense for him, though realistically he’d probably need to be within a certain range of Tormod. Because otherwise there could be a situation where the two are on opposite sides of the map and Muarim somehow ends up taking the damage instead of Tormod, which while funny, would make no sense

    Great video as always! I'm glad you showed clips of the characters you showed this time, it was at times hard to follow the Thracia776 video. Some characters are very forgettable (well this isn't such an issue for PoR anyways but you know)

    Mist: Balanced Nature. Gains +1 to magic and +10 to avoid when not affected by status conditions. She is supposed to be in perfect harmony between order and chaos, which is what lets her hold that medallion. without going crazy

    Gotoh units could probably have a context specific personal skill. Athos could have extra hit and might against the Fire Dragon and Nergal. Mycen could be less affected by swamp terrain. Lehran could make nearby allies take less damage from Ashera’s reflect damage gimmick.

    I don’t know what the name would be but I would give mist a skill that boosts move if she has more weapons and items to play at her gag of being bad at packing so the more cluttered her bag the more she hurries

    Honestly I would prefer my goddess Nephenee To be treated as the villager character that she properly is. That is she gets Aptitude. And a much better one than blossom.😂

    I think for mist this might work :
    Soft Hearted : attacks that would kill a target leave them with 1 HP. Enemies suffer a -30 hit when targeting Mist or allies within 2 spaces.

      That's cool flavor but I don't like the idea of a personal skill that prevents her from killing, it's bad enough when elincia has it as an optional skill 😭😭😭

    I feel like the critical condition for Marcia is ridiculous. Why would you have her face low% crits, also she is highly likely to die from a crit cuz she isn't bulky.
    Replace the condition with getting hit by a bow and maybe limit the str boost to 3 turns after getting hit.

    Look this is the third time we have access to Dragons{technically it's DLC and and engage so I understandable little bit but still I think the breath weapon should be an area effect one] I would really like it if we give a boost to the breath weapon it should not be a close range attack is it too hard to ask to give it the cone effect that way it makes it still feel weaker I mean it works when you give it to the transform state of tiki when everybody uses her bracelet in engage why can't we just do that for the rest of the dragon classes? It wouldn't be broken trust me! Look it's just path of radiance kind of makes me feel like this is a bigger statement on it because Dragons were seriously nerfed in that one and considering that they're supposed to be the big dangerous ones in both storylines that's really weird! I mean yeah the goddess is actually the heart fight in the sequel game but still! I want to feel dread when I see a map filled with Dragons not Oh my gosh this is gonna be such an easy chapter!

    Idk, Boyd felt like getting the short end of the stick. Though it's thematic, it felt like being the punch line without understanding what that does for the moral for his friends dn coworkers. I like to change it to be something like, "On player phase, it Boyd is the first to attack a target in the turn, allies attacking the same target and adjacent to Boyd gain +10% to crit"
    Wether hit or crit or damage, I think giving his allies the time in the limelight is key, but the crit leans into his pseudo passive with his brothers that can let them take the limelight, giving rolf a substantial crit chance even if not set up to triangle attack.

    If Muarim’s personal involves Tormod, I think it’d be neat if Soren and Mist’s personals involved Ike.

      Personally I don't think Soren and Mist are as defined by their relationship with ike as Mauraurm is with tormod, mostly because he isn't as fleshed out as the two of them are. I wanted to avoid skills that interact with just one unit for the most part, only occasionally making exceptions to that

      I should have specified that my intentions is for his skill to calc before other modifications, such as resolve, so you can "cheat" and get the best of both worlds haha

    Mist is tied to Yune, she's protecting a magical relic and she is pure hearted. I think Mist could easily have a passive low heal at the start of the turn if she is next to an ally. Like nothing massive like 1/10th of their total HP or something.
    I am not a fan of the gender based skills, I don't think PoR has a gender value to begin with and the game isn't designed around gender in the way later fire emblem games are by making generic enemy's with gender values and having closer to 50/50 gender rations. With Gatri it makes sense for but with Calill I think it doesn't really fit. Like she thinks she is hot but she also thinks she is like one of the best mages ever. I think focusing on her pride and instead giving her a skill to preform better when at 100% HP or something would probably suit her more.
    I don't think personal skills are why we don't see a anti soft lock unit in modern FE games but because recruitment is extremally different in these games with most units you recruit basically already being your allies from jump and the games having a lot more wiggle room to grind and stuff and a casual mode where you getting soft locked is basically impossible because the lord + avatar can solo the game.
