I once did a randomizer playthrough of RD and Ilyana randomized into a Raven Laguz with Formshift and Paragon, and a 70/90 Strength/Speed Growth. She quickly became one of my best units. This might have been because I "removed" stat caps on all classes (made them 99 for each.) She got to a point where she could almost one round most promoted units while untransformed. It was a funny playthrough.

Playing a modded RD is so much fun. You can add the little tweaks needed to make units like Ilyana work. Unfortunately, the change I want to make most, vastly increasing the available exp in part 1 without making it too easy, is beyond what I know how to do.
I've been doing a Radiant Dawn edit to rebalance some things, mostly fixing mages because they're my favorite fire emblem class and Ilyana was a fun project. What I came around to was altering Thunder magic itself to contour around her, since she is the only Thunder mage. She has really good strength, so what you can afford to do is reinstate Thunder Magic as the de facto best element, but make it so heavy that it's unrealistic for any other mage to use it to the same extent that Ilyana can. And since I was leaning into her strength so much, I just boosted the strength cap of the entire Thunder Mage line and now she gets to do the most damage when counterattacking with staves. Is this good? No. But it's funny and unique, which I consider equally valuable for fire emblem units. I also considered giving her Dire Thunder, but that felt like a step too far.
I love Ilyana. She was a character that I only used in POR because Soren died and I have played a blind ironman (or at least respected the permadeath). She'll always remind me how different FE feels when playing that way.
Weirdly as someone whose routing a Train everyone challenge in raidant dawn ( which is hell without a fixed growth patch btw ), i've come to realize theres no " tranining projects " in this game outside of a few laguz, meg and Fiona ( though admitly it would only be the laguz if i wasn't adding a sub-challenge of doing it under the turn limit for max bonux exp ). even Vika and friends are actually strong enough at base to be useable in part 3 if you just slightly rise there weapon ranks. oh and larua, since i have to fit in enough heals to get her to either 21 or 10 with a master seal but that hardly counts, it's painless and effortless
I love that we live in a reality where Oliver is actually a decent tower pick. His conversation with Lehran upon attacking him will always be my favorite.
the funniest thing you can do with her is stealing a bolting tome, blessing it in endgame-3 and then wreck those dragons from 10 tiles away. Although you can do that with pretty much anyone else I think.
There's a rebalance of RD I really like called Radiant Dawn +, and one thing it does is make the three anima types a little bit different from each other, Thunder was kept mostly the same but it was made 1-3 range, and this ends up buffing Ilyana by proxy. In general it buffs a lot of underwhelming units, so I brought a lot of units that don't get used by many people into the tower, like Ilyana, Lucia, Lyre, and even Fiona (she gets a brave javelin as a personal weapon and it's awesome). Very fun, would recommend. They should have given her Dire Thunder tho
When I played younger I used to always use ilyana. Plus giving her the alea and dragonfoe skills. I don't know if they stack but she had a lot to crit 🤣

I had no problem with Shade working in FE9. Enemies will avoid her in favor of ally's who can't counter attack. I also think Shade doesn't work if the enemy can kill her? I think that is the hangup. Shade works amazing with an ally with provoke also.
7:50 a really good example of good characters who do not scale well into the endgame is FE11 Bord whose C in axes means that he is the best non-magical answer to Knights after Ceada until Barst has C in axes in H5 every form of damage increase matters and Bord will have a job as a hammer user until you get Minerva.
I can't say I've useed Illy in Radiant Dawn but I used her in Path of Radiance once and I loved her unit feel. She ended up being really really good. Might have to use her if I restart RD again.
Ilyana being so meh and outclassed was genuinely the big reason why I decided against doing a Radiant Dawn playthrough where you bless every SS Rank weapon.
I have to say I specifically train Ilyana every run because I always use every S rank weapon in every tower run. But I can’t say that’s actually a good reason she’s good, I just like that type of completionism
@@DaniDoyle it’s how I make the tower fun for myself each time. I take at least one person capable of using each S rank weapon and then pick the last few slots of my favorites. Makes me not pick the overpowered laguz they give you and work with other characters

Theres so many things wrong with mages and magic in radiant but i will always take Ily to the tower every time. Im not going to claim to be the first to suggest promoting ilyana with the 1-5 seal but i remember causing a commotion on the r/fe discord by saying to do that The only thing that could make me like ilyana more is if she got dire thunder.
Currently playing some patch of RD that adds a couple of things and balances some units. And Ilyana starts at a higher level there and gets Wrath and Blossom. Slapped a Paragon on her to offset the Blossom and she quickly turned into one of my strongest units, capping nearly all stats. So... my immense Ilyana favoritism will probably never allow me to play base Radiant Dawn ever again.
Iirc the formula (for all items) is skill% + biorythm modifier (ranges from +20% to -20%) +50 for thieves, meaning at max biorythm you have a 90% chance with sothe.
She is definitely better in PoR, but it's always nice to have magic/two range units in your team, especially when Leo's bows and Edward's wind edges are not great at two range during those early maps. I personally think Laura is a much better investment, especially because she stays with the Dawn Brigade during part 3, can attack up ledge more accurately than most once promoted, and can Sleep Staff Ike. (Micaiah does render Laura redundant in the Tower, but so are most units at that point honestly 😅)
iilyana is good in por, enough where you can get transfer stat on key stats, mostly Mag and Spd, (thou might take use of bands and stat boaster to get to cap) as well possily str and skill. She can be viable in part 1 but need work but as stated. The investment is better gone to Nolah, jill and Zihark and better to make training project out of edward instead of iiyana. Since he contribute more to db in part 3
I really like her and will use her every time I play the game but yes, she is a tough sell when one of her main qualities is the hability to fedex items between two armies. PS: Dire Thunder was overrated.

I've actually seen a lot of people hyping up her path of radiance strength which just confuses me because I thought we settled the speed versus con debate ages ago (on mages strength is just con) and not only that the majority of tomes are either not heavy enough for it to matter or too heavy for her strength to offset
So in my current hm run which is my first time playing hard mode i didnt give ilyana like any exp in part 1 but decided to dedicate most of 3-2 and 3-3 to getting her to tier 2 and thats been pretty funny tbh. Has she been helpful yet? Uhhh
I would actually make the argument that Ilyana is substantially better in Path of Radiance compared to Radiant Dawn. While her Wolt-tier contributions in FE10 certainly do exist, shes never worth dedicating much time or experience to, and being a mule for the Greil mercs is certainly handy, but imo should not be factored in to her overall usability as a unit. Where in FE9, if we assume Maniac mode, she's a potential user of forge thunder tomes which makes her by default insane. And if we assume Hard mode, being a worse Soren with a weirdly high strength growth and higher thunder skill at base might not make her a GREAT unit like Soren, but she's not very far behind, and even has her join chapter to get some experience in if your Ike can make it to her. My opinion on Ilyana in Radiant Dawn basically comes down to "she's a less reliable Wolt" in that she can provide unreliable chip and occasionally steal kills from better units with random thunder crits. And considering Leonardo is already that without the thunder crits, and Micaiah does Ilyana's job better than her in the first place. I just struggle to see Ilyana being anything but a unit you are forced to use more than they are actually useful.
I'll be honest, I really disagree with the FE9 thoughts. I don't think a glitch should be counted in her favor (the thunder forge) and without it, shes just a worse soren, and soren is already a pretty trash unit. Mages in FE9 just don't offer much of value, due to low movement, low tome might, and the lack of powerful staff utility.
@@DaniDoyle Soren offers a ridiculous amount of utility on all difficulties if you're willing to train him/BEXP him because he gets a very powerful support with Ike, starts with Adept, joins extremely early, and makes an excellent user of Vantage. Of your pre-Marcia bexp targets, I think Soren is by far your best choice because he needs very few levels to start contributing. Honestly I think you're just vastly underrating how solid mages are in PoR, they might not be fliers or cavs, but you can't field EXCLUSIVELY cavs, and you always gotta field Ike anyways, so he will have a group that stays near him. Of these foot units, Soren's only real competition are Ilyana and Boyd. Boyd is very good too! And early promoting him for bows on the boat maps isn't a terrible idea. That being said, Soren and Ilyana are also easier to shove than Boyd, AND will get staff utility on promotion which is far from worthless even if PoR staves aren't ridiculous like Thracia staves.

It's much better invested in units who are already competent like Oscar and Marcia. Soren isn't just competing with infantry, it's very possible to make an army of entirely or almost entirely mounted units in path of radiance, as they have both better combat and better movement than the infantry.
@@DaniDoyle Oscar, Kieran, Makalov, Astrid, Titania, Marcia, Jill, Haar, and Tanith are all the mounted units (iirc) and a handful of them join significantly later than a majority of the cast. Love it or hate it, you can't EXCLUSIVELY use mounted units and you want some people around Ike so he doesn't implode anyways. I guess you could REALLY stretch this to include Mist who can BARELY fight and Elincia, who is bad and only usable for like 4 chapters right at the end of the game. Your options for infantry filler are pretty much Rhys (if you didn't promote a sage), Boyd, one of the sages, or one of the Laguz (probably Mordecai or Muarim). And I think everything that Soren brings to the table makes him better infantry than somebody like Muarim.
I forgot Geoffrey, and to mention that I've seen the Soren video, honestly I just think it's really strange to argue that a unit like Soren, who is viable infantry filler for the entire game, is a BAD unit in a game with some truly dreadful units and a top 10 that is leagues ahead of the rest of the cast.
Is that how shade works??? that's so silly lol If I had to redesign that I would make it so that you are invisible to ennemy as long as there is an adjacent unit they can target, that would still be limited but would be totally consistent and work great for a mage since you could pair her with a high defense unit and place yourself in such a way that she takes the aggro from mages and her partner takes the aggro from physical attackers if you play your cards right.
wait- is that seriously how Shade works? I've been glazing this skill for years now based on feel, and without anywhere really listing how it works I was never able to dive into the nitty gritty of it. Man this sucks, I assume provoke does the reverse then? Makes enemies assume no counterattack? Maybe Ilyana could at least kinda trail along with someone who has provoke? Also if that's the case how does Stillness work? Ilyana really shoulda got something like Dire Thunder to make up for it instead of Rexbolt.
It also makes enemies think they have weapon triangle disadvantage, which I forgot about, but it's still not a significant change to their priority esp on a frail mage.

I actually disagree. While she's definitely the worst mage to bring into the tower, I think that the help she gives during part 1 is more valuable than anything Soren Pellas or Bastian is doing for you. Mages just kind of scale pretty poorly into the late game, and even in the mid game you're better off using physical units on the greil mercenary maps

She can be viable in part 1 but need work but as stated. The investment is better gone to Nolah, jill and Zihark and better to make training project out of edward instead of iiyana. Since he contribute more to db in part 3

I really like her and will use her every time I play the game but yes, she is a tough sell when one of her main qualities is the hability to fedex items between two armies.

Seriously though I don't know... I've actually seen a lot of people hyping up her path of radiance strength which just confuses me because I thought we settled the speed versus con debate ages ago (on mages strength is just con) and not only that the majority of tomes are either not heavy enough for it to matter or too heavy for her strength to offset
So in my current hm run which is my first time playing hard mode i didnt give ilyana like any exp in part 1 but decided to dedicate most of 3-2 and 3-3 to getting her to tier 2 and thats been pretty funny tbh.

I would actually make the argument that Ilyana is substantially better in Path of Radiance compared to Radiant Dawn.
While her Wolt-tier contributions in FE10 certainly do exist, shes never worth dedicating much time or experience to, and being a mule for the Greil mercs is certainly handy, but imo should not be factored in to her overall usability as a unit. Where in FE9, if we assume Maniac mode, she's a potential user of forge thunder tomes which makes her by default insane. And if we assume Hard mode, being a worse Soren with a weirdly high strength growth and higher thunder skill at base might not make her a GREAT unit like Soren, but she's not very far behind, and even has her join chapter to get some experience in if your Ike can make it to her.
My opinion on Ilyana in Radiant Dawn basically comes down to "she's a less reliable Wolt" in that she can provide unreliable chip and occasionally steal kills from better units with random thunder crits. And considering Leonardo is already that without the thunder crits, and Micaiah does Ilyana's job better than her in the first place. I just struggle to see Ilyana being anything but a unit you are forced to use more than they are actually useful.
I'll be honest, I really disagree with the FE9 thoughts. I don't think a glitch should be counted in her favor (the thunder forge) and without it, shes just a worse soren, and soren is already a pretty trash unit. Mages in FE9 just don't offer much of value, due to low movement, low tome might, and the lack of powerful staff utility.
@@DaniDoyle Soren offers a ridiculous amount of utility on all difficulties if you're willing to train him/BEXP him because he gets a very powerful support with Ike, starts with Adept, joins extremely early, and makes an excellent user of Vantage. Of your pre-Marcia bexp targets, I think Soren is by far your best choice because he needs very few levels to start contributing. Honestly I think you're just vastly underrating how solid mages are in PoR, they might not be fliers or cavs, but you can't field EXCLUSIVELY cavs, and you always gotta field Ike anyways, so he will have a group that stays near him. Of these foot units, Soren's only real competition are Ilyana and Boyd. Boyd is very good too! And early promoting him for bows on the boat maps isn't a terrible idea. That being said, Soren and Ilyana are also easier to shove than Boyd, AND will get staff utility on promotion which is far from worthless even if PoR staves aren't ridiculous like Thracia staves.
@@stickbreitling2969 i made an entire video about soren, so if you want a more in-depth breakdown on my thoughts you should check that out, but I really do not think he's worth spending a large amount of bonus experience on. It's much better invested in units who are already competent like Oscar and Marcia. Soren isn't just competing with infantry, it's very possible to make an army of entirely or almost entirely mounted units in path of radiance, as they have both better combat and better movement than the infantry.
@@DaniDoyle Oscar, Kieran, Makalov, Astrid, Titania, Marcia, Jill, Haar, and Tanith are all the mounted units (iirc) and a handful of them join significantly later than a majority of the cast. Love it or hate it, you can't EXCLUSIVELY use mounted units and you want some people around Ike so he doesn't implode anyways. I guess you could REALLY stretch this to include Mist who can BARELY fight and Elincia, who is bad and only usable for like 4 chapters right at the end of the game. Your options for infantry filler are pretty much Rhys (if you didn't promote a sage), Boyd, one of the sages, or one of the Laguz (probably Mordecai or Muarim). And I think everything that Soren brings to the table makes him better infantry than somebody like Muarim.
I forgot Geoffrey, and to mention that I've seen the Soren video, honestly I just think it's really strange to argue that a unit like Soren, who is viable infantry filler for the entire game, is a BAD unit in a game with some truly dreadful units and a top 10 that is leagues ahead of the rest of the cast.

If I had to redesign that I would make it so that you are invisible to ennemy as long as there is an adjacent unit they can target, that would still be limited but would be totally consistent and work great for a mage since you could pair her with a high defense unit and place yourself in such a way that she takes the aggro from mages and her partner takes the aggro from physical attackers if you play your cards right.
wait- is that seriously how Shade works? I've been glazing this skill for years now based on feel, and without anywhere really listing how it works I was never able to dive into the nitty gritty of it. Man this sucks, I assume provoke does the reverse then? Makes enemies assume no counterattack? Maybe Ilyana could at least kinda trail along with someone who has provoke? Also if that's the case how does Stillness work?
Ilyana really shoulda got something like Dire Thunder to make up for it instead of Rexbolt.
It also makes enemies think they have weapon triangle disadvantage, which I forgot about, but it's still not a significant change to their priority esp on a frail mage.

I actually disagree. While she's definitely the worst mage to bring into the tower, I think that the help she gives during part 1 is more valuable than anything Soren Pellas or Bastian is doing for you. Mages just kind of scale pretty poorly into the late game, and even in the mid game you're better off using physical units on the greil mercenary maps
@DaniDoyle Oops pelleas migut actually be worse than her lol. But my thing for bastion and Oliver at least is their staff rank and I like bringing extra staffers to the tower. And soren is the second best mage at combat. it'd easy to cap his stats and bexp him. And makes a good ike support.

Them congrats cheat code activate (if you fell evil slap paragon on zihark and laguz map and zihark will snowball out of control ) they 2 on they own can take Control of haft map just give them some item and dont be me (a idiot) and you have
2 DB map is only one choke point slap them there and give every one who you want to train 2 ranges (and paragon if he has on him from zihark) and you shoud be fine for nox castle
people say Illyana is a boring character because her only personality is eating, but I can appreciate a simple character that doesn't have much going on, it reminds me that these characters are more than that, they're people, and most people don't have a wholeass backstory to divulge to everyone.
And besides, she's cute and funny.
