If you remember back in series 4 when Willow and Tara were doing a demon locator spell and Tara deliberately messed it up, you've been half-questioning her since then. This is why, she believed herself to be part demon and has been trying to hide. That seed was planted so long ago.

Family was a great episode where you feel that the group really are a solid unit. Spike is hilarious at the end again when he punches Tara to prove she is not a Demon, and calls out Tara's father. The interesting juxtaposition here with Tara and Willow using magic to get their way. We see this dynamic changing as Willow gains more power. Was somewhat interesting too to see Amy Adams in a one of her first roles before becoming Hollywood A-lister, as it was seeing Pedro Pascal in S4 episode The Freshman, and Jeremy Renner popping up in Angel episode Somnambulist.

Such a beautiful episode. "We're family" is one of my favorite heartwarming moments of the season, and the reveal of Spike's fantasy is one of my favorite comedic moments of the season. I also love the crazy amounts of character growth and discovery going on, and all the internal conflicts Spike is dealing with. I mean, there's the obvious (goes "to watch the Slayer die," but then helps her), to the slightly less obvious (says he "doesn't care what happens" with Tara, but then _puts himself through pain_ just to prove that she's not actually a demon, then calls out the dad for making it all up, but then tries to salvage his "bad guy" identity by saying "I like you" to him at the end.
Plus, of course, oodles and oodles of Willow/Tara cuteness, right when you were getting annoyed at there not being enough Tara! :)

Easily one of my favorite episodes in the franchise, Tara’s a personal fave for me so I’ll admit my bias there but I seriously just also get really emotional watching this episode. I relate so hard to her family dynamic and her being accepted her true “family” at the end never ceases to get me in the feels. Big props to Sarah’s delivery on the ending dialogue and Amber Bensons acting too which is CRIMINALLY underrated in this series 😤👏 10/10 episode for me.

And why only the _women_ in the family having demon in them? That's not how inheritance works. There can be Y linked characteristics that pass down through male lines but X and the other pairs can go through both. I suppose it could be mitochondrial DNA, which does pass through female lines, but anybody want to bet that the story involves one of the women in their family having congress with a demon, not a male impregnating a female demon.
Yeah, I tend to overthink things. I'm neurodivergent. Deal with it. ;)

I have to talk a little bit about Cousin Beth portrayed by Amy Adams because there is so much in her and Tara’s short but intense interactions but it’s not very detailed and therefore easy to miss because of it.
    “Are you happy now?”
Of course she’s happy. She’s free from her abusers. But you’re not happy because it means you aren’t. You should have joined her, helped her, stood against your uncle and cousin and you didn’t. Your loss, Beth. Your jealousy, resentment and vindictiveness will be your downfall. And you will always be a victim to it.
The way Benson plays this entire scene silently but yet still showing us exactly what she’s thinking. Masterful! Her cousin is seething and all she does is just smiles. It’s a way of saying “I pity you, Beth, but good luck.” Psychological conditioning is a fucking brute and only the strongest of wills make it out alive. I should know. But Beth had an opportunity here to speak up for Tara and she chose not to. She could have freed herself. It truly is sad ‘cause she was fed just as many lies. Even without magical power odds are she was also likely treated horrifically by the men of the family. She could see that Tara’s defiance is what could free the both of them and all she does is tries to shame her instead of support her. Her jealousy is that deep. Her will is that weak. But there are thousands like her. Some turn a corner but most just stay just the same. They think it makes them safer but they’re so wrong.
Beth expects Tara to shoulder what has now become her burden now that she's the only woman of the house. Tara coming back with them means the burden will return to her and she'd be free from it. Beth will only play nice so long as Tara plays victim. It's really sad when you consider that they could actually just combine their powers together to take down the gentlemen of the family. But that's just what an abusive "family" dynamic like that does to the members of it that are also being abused. Has them only look out for themselves instead of work together to support each other out of it. In the environment of demon eats demon, survival means being just as brutal as the brutality you are dealt. Beth is only cruel because she believes she has to be to survive.
Now look at Tara who is abused, brutalised, manipulated, gaslighted and neglected for her entire lifetime.... And yet never ever is cruel or does any of that to anyone else. Her light shines so bright because everyone else she's related to has chosen to extinguish their own candle. You could say Tara’s actions and choices in this episode make her no better than her family, but considering she is psychologically conditioned to believe she’ll turn into a demon, you can understand her desperation to not allow that part of her to be exposed to the ones she loves and cares about the most. It is simply that she is just afraid. And that’s not a crime. It’s a fucking traumatic tragedy.

The batch of eps 5x05, 5x06 and 5x07 kinda makes me think about an old SNES racing game called Lamborghini American Challenge, in that game, yo can bet money with other racers, and when there's 2 or 3 of them and you don't bet too high, they'll go
racer 1 : I'll see you.. and I'll raise you
racer 2 : I can match that... Can you match this ?

Buffy and Xander's conversation about "not getting Tara" and "she's super nice" is exactly what the OG fanbase thought of her at the time. None knew what to make of her until this episode gave a backstory to work with. Amber Benson even typed online against the hatred some fans gave Willow and Tara's relationship. From this episode's airdate onward I've never heard a bad word against Tara.
My head canon theory is that magic isn't Tara's dad's issue. It's the fact that she wanted to leave him (perhaps even for another girl, but could of been for numerous reasons [and take Tara with her]) and he wasn't going to allow that so made up a story about her magic and in order to keep it's cover continued spinning it "to keep the ladies in line," as Spike says.

    • @Girl4Music
      @Girl4Music 11 месяцев назад

I reckon the lie was made up well before Tara was born. I think it’s likely been in the family for generations. On the Partriachal side of course. Don’t forget the mother was a witch too. So the women in the immediate family are all probably witches and the men thought witch = demon or spinned it that way to stop them from using their powers against them. It’s very likely a generational lie. Tara’s just the latest victim. Makes you wonder whether Beth has magical power too. She seems to be very jealous and resents Tara so likely not.
      But I think Spike’s right. It’s a family legend.

    Loved your reaction.
This episode proves Tara loved Willow a lot more than any of us thought, if you think about it.
Early in the show, there's a lot of buildup up in slayer lore and how Buffy's really a judge of the demon realm. With her experience with Angelus, she learned the harsh lesson that the slayer is obligated to kill any demon that poses a threat to the human realm.
So, imagine just how Tara must have felt, after being told all her life that she had an evil demon in her, when she learned that Willow's best friend was the slayer, whose whole purpose in existing, would be to kill her. I would imagine she would have been terrified. I wpuld expect her first instinct would to have been to put as much distance between her and Buffy and tried as hard as she could to stay off her radar.
Yet she didn't. Willow had kept Buffy and all that went with her away from Tara as long as she could, and in that time, Tara fell in love with Willow. So much so, that she decided to imperil her life by keeping close to her despite how close that kept her to Buffy.
Even more amazing is that not once did she try to separate Willow from Buffy. Another thing she had plenty of opportunity to do was to drive a wedge between Willow and Buffy. Separate her off and keep Willow away so she would be safer.
Instead, she lovingly encouraged Willow to stay close. In fact, this might have been for another reason too. To protect Willow. If she really felt a demon might emerge from her, take her over, and do harm, she may have been worried for Willow's safety. So, keeping her close to Buffy, meant Buffy would always be there to protect Willow from the demon in Tara. So, in effect, she was knowingly placing herself in a position where Buffy would be forced to kill her if she ever became a threat, hopefully before she could harm Willow, or anyone else.
Another thing. We see that scene where Buffy and Xander are admitting they don't know Tara well and think they are lousy friends. Yet, it is far more likley that this was Tara's design. She kept herself out of being a scoobie intentionally. She maintained a distance from Buffy and Xander intentionally, keeping a space between them so neither could get close to her.
This would be for two reasons. One is they might find out her secret and convince Willow to stay away from her. Another more important reason, it would make it harder to kill her if they were really friends. She's made sure there was that distance, so in case the time came, Buffy would be more willing to do what needed to be done.
So, in that light, Tara's love for Willow is shown to be much more powerful than we ever thought. Even here, when Buffy learned she had a demon in her, she chose to stay near Buffy and risk death rather than go with her family, who she thought in that moment, would be able to contain her demon side and keep her alive.
Also, I like to bring up the thought here to, of just what must have gone through Buffy's mind in those moments where she thought Tara had a demon in her.
I could imagine a terror similar to what Tara felt had surged through her. In that moment, she would have had to face the enormous responsibility of having to judge Tara, Willows girlfriend, and having to kill her, if she found her to be a risk to any human. Yet, she still chose to protect her and keep her close to Willow despite the gut wrenching possibility that she may still end up needing to kill her later if the demon managed to take her over and make her a danger later. Fortunately, those fears of possibly having to break Willow's heart disappeared with the revelation that Tara was just a regular human.
Some people wish that she was a demon, so she could have had more power, but it would have been terrible for Buffy. Constantly having to judge Tara all the time. Always worried that one day she may have to kill the woman Willow loved so much. No, they couldn't add that weight to Buffy's shoulders.
Still, some interesting things to ponder.

Nice one that gave us Tara finally/officially joining the Scoobz as family and exposed the past of her blood family and their backward thinking ways wrt the women in their family, and gave Tara the courage to spread her wings with the support of her new found family... And I agree that the new Big Bad is great, totally something of a vapid ditz but still terrifying somehow as we've seen that she does have power... and it'll be great to watch you discover more about her as the season goes along..... Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Family’. May contain spoilers.
‘Family’ is one of my favourite episodes of the whole show. It’s definetly my favourite episode of Season 5... but then there’s not really much contest there. I love it not only because it’s the only Tara-centric episode that finally gives her some character development. But I also love it for the complex and serious themes it addresses. That of domestic abuse and found family VS blood-kin relationships. And you may well know that I am always more interested in the themes and messages conveyed in art/entertainment than the actual content of it. I’m definitely more about the meaning and the learning than the pleasure principle in watching a TV show - so therefore ‘Family’ is an important episode to me. It’s not just because I love the character it’s about,... although that does help.
Tara is a character that is supposed to remind us of the shy and insecure character Willow used to be in the earlier seasons. However, there is much more reason for Tara to be the way she is in her demeanor than there ever was for Willow. At least in my opinion - Tara is without a doubt the most abused character in all of the show because she’s abused throughout her whole lifetime. This episode shows us that Tara is domestically abused by her blood-kinship and this reveal doesn’t exactly shock us because it’s really evident in the way Tara expresses herself. And she is abused in two different ways:
Emotionally - by her father and cousin that gaslight her to believe she’s an evil demon and use coercive control to exert power over her.
Physically - by her brother who threatens to beat her if she doesn’t do what her father tells her and how she reacts to him in the shaking and the stuttering.
This girl has clearly been through a lot before ever meeting Willow and we really sympathise with her throughout all her interactions with her relatives (I refuse to use the word ‘family’ in regards to them because they are not) in the episode. The lack of love, support, care, kindness, generosity, understanding, trust, faith and compassion has seriously had a major affect on Tara - as it would with anyone that goes or has gone through domestic abuse or domestic violence as it’s now called and recognized.
So for Tara... being accepted as and called ‘family’ by the Scooby Gang at the climax of the episode means a great deal. Not just for Willow and Tara’s romantic relationship but for the relationship Tara develops with all of the protagonist characters. They are now her found family and the only people she really knows and interacts with from now on. The dance scene at the end of the episode is my most favourite Willow/Tara moment. I fell in love with them when I first watched this scene. It’s the acceptance and the forgiveness Willow gives in that she understands why Tara tried to hide her prior life from her but explains that it wasn’t necessary because the fact she isn’t anything like her blood-kinship is what makes Willow love Tara more. Because she’s entirely right - anyone that can come from a cruel and violent environment like Tara did and still remain so empathetic and non-judgemental with other people deserve great admiration and respect. It’s not easy to not reflect and project that same behaviour on others. I know that firsthand. And I’ll forever feel extremely guilty for it even though it wasn’t something I could really have conscious control of at the time.
Going forward in the show, Tara’s demeanor completely changes. With the love and support of her found family and her girlfriend, her self-esteem greatly improves very quickly and she becomes a confident, secure, strong and all around beautiful person. So much so that she is able to say ‘No’ to Willow when she starts to spiral with the abusing of magic and the accumulation of power - knowing herself exactly where that can lead to as she’s tried to avoid “becoming evil” her whole life. There is the thought for me that were that the truth - were she actually part demon - I doubt she would have ever been all that evil at all.

    “She can’t even see Spike”
Oh well done. Most people don’t realize that on a first watch. See this is why I like you as a reactor.
You’re observant and perceptive about really small non-detailed things. Things most reactors overlook.
Yeah, Tara has clearly suffered a lot of abuse and that’s why she’s like she is with the involuntary shaking and stuttering. A lot of psychological conditioning has happened to her as she’s grew up with her relatives and it’s not something she can just get over like that. It’s left a severe scar on her. And this is validated in the way Tara instinctively was about to say “Every time I…” and then changes the context to “Even when I’m at my worst”. She’s internalized this “I’m a demon” mindset and that’s why she’s so secretive and shady this entire episode and in 4x14. It’s really sad. She shouldn’t be blamed for it. It’s something that she’s had no control over.
I mean yeah, she’s lied and put her loved ones in danger because of it. And yeah, if she was actually a demon, that would have been really bad. But if her lie was all a lie then it doesn’t really matter. And that’s why I love that ending scene with Willow and Tara so much. Willow just forgives her. For everything. For lying, for using spells on them, for being a little nasty to her. She just accepts and forgives her because, as Giles once said, regardless whether Tara deserves forgiveness or not - she needed it. Willow loves her so much to just put aside the betrayal. I wonder if Tara will return the favour.
And they all forgive her. The whole Gang because they understood that she’s just a victim in all this.
As for Willow saying the “l” word.
Although she never actually said it herself, when Tara says to her in ‘New Moon Rising’ “You have to be with the person you love”, Willow says in response “I am” which is just as good as saying the “l” word herself. She’s been in love with her for awhile now so her saying it here is just a reaffirmation of how in love with her she is and her immediate forgiveness proves it.

Yet no one picks up that they all can see Tara even before she lifts the spell. You know if any entity with demon in them just becomes invisible and she didn’t. That would have made no sense if she was actually part-demon.
She’s just a witch. Still supernatural in nature but definitely not a demon. Maybe an Empath.

You’ve also got to love the blatant connection between witchcraft and lesbianism and that they’re both viewed as “evil” in Tara’s father’s eyes.
“I suppose you wanted me to see all these… toys”
*he says as he picks up a curiously dildo-shaped looking crystal and moves and handles it into an erect position and then puts it down with a sigh*
A Whedon dirty joke if ever there was one. But as dirty as it is, it is purposeful in digging up a deeper message that this episode buries beneath it’s concept. But it doesn’t bury it so deeply that it can’t be seen or can’t be interpreted as truth or canon.
The metaphor is so obvious at this point that he might as well hit Tara over the head with that crystal. Which I’m fairly sure was a frequent occurrence when she lived and grew up with them if her brother’s “If you don’t get in that car I swear by god I will beat you down” comment is any indication.
No, ‘Family’, in metaphor’, is an episode about a gay girl taking her power back from her family of homophobic abusers and that’s why it’s fantastic!
You have to see beneath the surface of the supernatural to see the deep realism in this show.
It is a show about Slayers and vampires/demons.
    And it’s not.
It is a show about magic and fantasy.
    And it’s not.
It is a show about defeating the mythical undead.
    And it’s not.
It’s the “And it’s not” level that I watch it at and for. However, when the two levels coincide together so brilliantly like this ,… the show is profoundly compelling to watch and to discuss over. You can watch at and for it’s surface level if you wish. But you can also watch it at and for it’s deeper level too.
And you’re going to absolutely love Season 5 if you love watching it at and for both, believe me, Dakara because ‘BTVS’ holds the Mastercard on how to create and deliver timeless TV art/entertainment. It doesn’t always get it right. But when it does - it gets it SO RIGHT that you will pick up endless meaning in it. And I don’t know about you but that’s why I even bother to engage in any art/entertainment at all.

I think there's a bit of religious politicism mixed in there as well. Tara's father comes off as resembling an ultra-right-wing evangelist. I wonder if it's any coincidence that the actor they chose has a striking similarity to Kenneth Copeland.
The real-world demons the show depicts aren't always apparent and they don't always wear black hats. Evil never does. (Glory anyone?)

Spike: “I punched a girl in the face once. She was very grateful.”
    Me: “Umm… okay. 😐”
Spike: “No no, you misunderstand. I punched her because she thought she was a demon and this was like putting the glass slipper on Cinderella. It proved she was just a human so her family would be exposed for the evil manipulative rotten sods they are.”
Me: “I see. But aren’t you evil? Why did you care?”
    Spike: “Umm 🤷‍♀️”
See at this point in the show he only knows that he is in love with Buffy. He doesn’t know what it’s doing to him. As far as he is aware and everybody else apparently, he is still 100% evil. If it’s only demon possession happening here….

EXACTLY! She and them are his external moral compass because he doesn’t possess an internal one.
