    The 'we're family' scene in this gets to me every time. I personally see it as a metaphor for an LGBT person being rejected by their own family, but finding a place in a new family that loves them for who they are. And I've been in the position of being part of a group that has been able to do that for someone as well - to be able to give someone a hug, after their own family has disowned them, and say 'it's okay, we're your family now' (and that is something pretty powerful and moving to experience, and even if you haven't experienced it directly I think it's also something that resonates with a lot of people hence the emotions).

    • @keurimjanee
      @keurimjanee 6 лет назад +24

      Totally with you here. I'd be shocked if this is not the metaphor they intended. Such a powerful scene.

      You took the words out of my mouth. I was not long out of the closet when this ep first aired. I was fortunate enough to have parents that, despite their religious views, didn't abandon me. But even still, this one hits close to home, and I tear up each time I see it.

    • @StalKalle
      @StalKalle 5 лет назад +7

      It was most definitely intended. Joss was most likely told to censor the "gay" in the show and decided to use metaphors instead. That way he got away with a lot that the network wouldn't have allowed otherwise.
      The reason they don't kiss here, like ASR asked about, was most likely because the network didn't allow it.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 5 лет назад +1

      You definitely nailed the Metaphor to the LGBT. Like Tara's cousins line about Tara "living god knows what kind of lifestyle". She of course meant the magic, but the magic being the metaphor for LGBT. You could get rid of all the magic stuff and it's just straight up the blood family not accepting her as a gay woman, and her having a "new family"

    • @Muirmaiden
      @Muirmaiden 5 лет назад +4

      I think it could also symbolize anyone who doesn't feel loved and accepted by their family.

    Amy Adams before she became 5 time Oscar Nominated Actress AMY ADAMS! Before Junebug!
    You're right Sandy was the girl Vampire Willow killed... great memory!
    Willow and Tara don't kiss for censorship reasons... back in the early 00s it was still strange to see gay couples in the mainstream up at that point and there were strict restrictions of showing gay couples... Joss Whedon pushed the envelope and Willow and Tara were one of Network TV's first openly gay couples! It was a big stride for tv and Joss was brave for spear heading it

    The network was kinda uneasy about having a same-sex kiss on screen. They were even reluctant to have the relationship be present at all, which is why it was buried as subtext for so long in season 4. It's a shame, but it was still groundbreaking for its time.

    • @dantheman8103
      @dantheman8103 6 лет назад +12

      It definitely was groundbreaking. Doesn't seem as unusual now, but back when Buffy came on there were not a lot of gay main characters on anything, and the only show in the same demographics as Buffy to have a gay main character was Dawson's Creek the year before. And even with that show while Jack had been on for the entire season when he came out he was not an actual main character before then. Having a fan favorite character like Willow get into a same sex relationship 4 years into her tenure was unheard of. Hell, despite how obvious it looked they were going that way when Tara was introduced, most fans were still shocked when it became official they were a couple because it was so unprecedented at the time.

      And the double standard was ridiculously brutal. Considering you have one couple that can’t kiss on screen and another grew a jungle by constant screwing.
      It reminds me a lot of the controversy over Kirk and Uhura kissing in the original Star Trek.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 3 года назад +1

      Bringing up Dawson's creek I remember that even then there was still a long way to go. It was like Jack's gay and out, but they couldn't have him actually date guys. They had to constantly fight the network to let him actually be gay as more than just a label. They'd let him be a gay character, but didn't want him to BE gay.

    This was a Joss Whedon script. If you didn't get emotional it means there's something wrong with you ;)
    Willow and Tara couldn't kiss because back then same sex kisses were forbidden in that channel. LGBTphobia was completely allowed and seen as something natural. Not much has changed nowadays, but at least same sex couples can kiss on tv....
    It was so extreme, the banning of those couples, that Joss Whedon decided to use magic to hide sexual intercourse between Willow and Tara. Remember the episode "Who are you" where Faith and Buffy switched bodies? The spell Tara and Willow made to find out what was happening was a hidden way to show a sex scene between them. Loved this reaction and loved seeing you emotional!! I myself keep getting emotional every time I rewatch that scene. Thank you!!

    We all cried when we watched this episode. It's one of the best. Honestly, those for whom Buffy is an important and meaningful show are often on the outskirts of society. They feel like outcasts who don't belong... like nobody understands them. They find the trappings of our culture stifling and the expectations of friends and family difficult to abide by. They often feel alone.... at least, I know I did. This explores how these people can find others who are like them, who then BECOME their family. "Blood kin" is not family. Family suits up and shows up. Family is there for you no matter what. This episode speaks to one of the major themes running through the series and this season in particular. I'm glad you love it as much as I do!

  • @DaveVampireSlayer

    Wonderful episode right?
    Predictable that Buffy only told Giles the truth about Dawn, their father-daughter relationship is always more solid and deep at every bet.
    The whole "demon " thing metaphorically might indicate a family who does not agree to have a lesbian daughter, and makes her feel like she was wrong for her sesssuale orientation.
    Instead, the "We Are Family" of Buffy is rich in meaning: Tara had a family who does not love her for what she is, but luckily she found another who does it and who accepted it even before they knew the truth about her.
    If the conduct of Buffy, Dawn and the Gang is really admirable and commendable, not least is that of Spike, who continues his way to redemption (or at least it seems)

    I think that the show had done enough, especially recently, to show what a sweet person Tara was, that to show us the relatives she had to deal with, and then get to see the group embrace her and stand up for her against that, strongly, really does create a moment of such empathy, relief, joy, that it truly gets to the viewer on a broad level. It may have surprised you how much it did so here; and I know that you've gotten plenty of testimonials over the past two years from people saying that it moved us similarly, the first and many times. But, I still felt the need to chime in and say that the emotion you felt, and allowed us to see, was completely relatable and a big part of another great reaction episode. Thank you.

Could anyone imagine Cordy from early season 1 not just being friends with the Scoobies, but feeling bad about herself for running to save herself when a bunch of vampires attacked? She did not have visions and may not have been a hero, but she already felt bad about not being able to be one.

    Oh Spike 🤣❤ I love how Spike either cares enough about Tara and/or the gang or dislikes Tara's dad & fam enough (or both) that he'll risk the pain of hitting a human... but in the next breath totally admires what a d-bag Tara's dad is 🤣🤣 20:10 "you're a piece of work. I like you."

    Willow and Tara were such a great couple... one of the best I've ever seen in TV ever... from the her first appearance to the end of the show, they were meant to be together... and it's amazing how they had to make adjustments just to avoid controversy for not showing a lesbian relationship on TV... they had great chemistry.. amazing how they managed to show a lesbian couple and characters just like nothing that different when the standard of gay characters on TV where either freaks or commedy tools at the time...

    Hey look! It's Amy Adams before she was anyone! It's so weird to see her on this show now.
    I tear up at the ending too. It's so sweet! They might not understand Tara, but they're family and that's all that matters. Guess you men are just going to have to cook your own food.
    WB wouldn't allow lesbian smoochies, hence no kissing for Willow and Tara. :(

      I know this is an old comment, but I'm shocked how many different celebrities got some of their first, or early appearances before their appearances on Buffy and Angel. It just shows how good Josh Whedon was at seeing great talents.

    My daily dose of Shanntara since the time it was around 37 or 39k views:
    "Tara has a really cute smile [...] That's nice"
    "She is so cute!" - I can see the hearts in Shans eyes 😍
    "I don't want you to leave either" - favored moment, wanna hug both of them simultaneously 🧸🧸
    "Yes they do!"
    "Oh Spike..!"
    "I think she is!"
    "See, that's why you are a dummy!"
    "...you always make me feel special!"
    "And Spike [...] not really misunderstanding but you know..."
    "This was a really heartwarming episode."
    With this snippets i start my day every morning, so Shannan, if you see spikes in your analytics on this points (and in the kitty-part), that's me 😁 .

    Don't apologize for crying, it makes me cry too! Every time. I was glad to see it got to you the same way.
    They love her! They accept her! They protect her! They forgave her! Even though she put their lives in danger out of her own desperation. I guess that's why?
    There's not even _that_ much of a music cue! There are some bright notes that start when Buffy turns around (wait why does she turn around, she was already facing him...) Sometimes I realize that a soundtrack is forcing me to _feel_, which I resent! But they are usually pretty good about it on Buffy.

    18:00 - I guessed we'd see a few tears - and I was right! I thought this was a really strong episode - the meaning of the title, "Family", becoming apparent at the end. True "family" not just "blood kin."
    I always wondered what happened to Amy Adams' character after this - I mean, she knows now that the women in the family don't actually have demon in them and it's all been a lie. Also, I remember when I first saw this I thought "she's awfully pretty. I wonder if I'll see her in anything else."

    Don't worry, I cried too. It was so emotional especially since you saw Tara earlier make a joke and feel kinda dumb about the joke and everyone not remembering her party or what to get her. It was showing that they didn't spend a ton of time with Tara and yet they still stood up for her and called her family. Really great.
    Also there used to be a site back in the day called Buffy Music that would upload the songs from the episodes. I listened to that last song Willow and Tara danced to over and over.

    You recognized the vampire hitting on Riley as the woman (Sandy) Vamp-Willow killed and turned (off-screen) in Dopplegangland. I'm impressed. A lot of people never realized that.
    I "warned" you there would be big-fat-happy-tears in the story..... and here we are. Turn on the waterworks for one of the most heartwarming moments in TV history...... "We're family". Most fans consider this moment more heartwarming than "Buffy Summers - Class Protector". It's a tossup for me.
