    this is still one of my favorite episodes in the whole series. i think it aired within a few months of me coming out as queer when i was a teenager, and a couple of years before lawrence v texas struck down anti-sodomy laws in the states, effectively decriminalizing homosexuality on a federal level. editor (spencer??), i really appreciated the insert quote from marti noxon about the hoops the network made them jump thru re: the depiction of queer affection.
    my theory about tara's family is that the men are taught how to recognize women with magical talent and then are indoctrinated that it's their holy charge or something to bring these women to kneel before christ to rid them of their demons. then they can act like it's a genetic thing to the resulting girl children, whether or not those children have magical potential, and say shit like 'if you humble yourself and learn your place, you might overcome your demonic nature.' let's just say i have some battle scars from when certain christians would clock my pentacles and take it as a challenge.

    I'm not a Riley fan, but...she should tell Riley! I understand why she doesn't, especially in this moment where she's being pressured. But the main reasons she's not telling the Scoobies are that they could accidentally reveal the information, the information could be tortured out of them, or they would start treating Dawn differently. I'm not particularly worried about Riley on any of those counts! He used to be part of a top-secret military operation, so he's good at keeping secrets and pretending that things are normal, he was probably trained to hold up under torture (and I mean he sliced his own chest open to get the chip out and help Buffy last season), and he hasn't known Dawn very long, so it wouldn't be super noticeable if he was a little weird around her. And like you mentioned, it would be helpful to have another member of the team who knows that Dawn in particular might be targeted.

    • @RubyDianArts

      except he was the weak point in the initiative's security that allowed buffy to infiltrate it in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀ didn't the show also make a bunch of jokes in season 4 about how bad he was at hiding his manouvers from the scooby gang? i never saw him as particularly successful at being stealthy, ability to withstand torture or no. when it comes to security culture, it's pretty standard practice not to share details with your partners. i do think there are lots of other ways, particularly in future episodes, in which buffy shuts him down that are indicative of her not trusting him in general, but i don't think her motivations are misplaced when it comes to dawn

    Cousin Beth's "Are you happy now?" followed by Tara's beautiful crooked smile... SO FUCKING PERFECT! And the thing that FAR too many people seem to miss is that when Tara called out "Buffy, behind you!" it's clear that Buffy can both see and hear Tara, so it's already been proven that she's not a demon before Spike punches her. Hell, I'm pretty sure I missed it the first couple of times I watched this episode.

    • @evesapple
      @evesapple 10 месяцев назад +2

      That's not really something to miss though- when Tara cast the spell it wasn't done with the intention that they wouldn't be able to see or hear her at all. That would suck.
      It was so they couldn't see her demon side. How the spell went wrong was that it reached out to all demons. But they would still be able to see her human side.

    Family was a great episode where you feel that the group really are a solid unit. Spike is hilarious at the end again when he punches Tara to prove she is not a Demon, and calls out Tara's father. The interesting juxtaposition here with Tara and Willow using magic to get their way. We see this dynamic changing as Willow gains more power. Was somewhat interesting too to see Amy Adams in a one of her first roles before becoming Hollywood A-lister, as it was seeing Pedro Pascal in S4 episode The Freshman, and Jeremy Renner popping up in Angel episode Somnambulist.

    I think the thing with Riley is that he can feel Buffy's lack of trust in him. I can see why she wouldn't tell him (or her friends) about Dawn, but at the end of the day if you can't trust your significant other with the most important things in your world then should you really be together? Then there's the flipside of us as an audience knowing that Buffy would almost certainly tell Angel if she were still with him.

    To be fair, it wasn't that they couldn't show kissing back when this was new, it's that in that era it was often used as a titillation draw. Networks would sell the ads as "Hey! Wanna see two chicks kiss? Better watch the latest episode of BUFFY!"
    That's why the writers put their first (onscreen) kiss in the one episode they could NEVER have sold as titillation (The Body).

    Watching Normies videos can be frustrating when they start acting as if the characters should behave like they do.

    I have been waiting for this episode. Love that they set up the mystery last season but never really went back to it. Should the show have teased it more before now? Maybe. But then nice that it seemed to come out of the blue. Found families for the win! Nice that Dawn and Buffy came together at the end too. All the conflict they have been having melted away to protect the ones they love.

    Always figured the monks' plan for a kind of 'hail mary' pass where they ran out of time to work a complete plan; that the Monk here working on the map was trying to find the Slayer so he could pass on the information she needed. This ep; besides Tara being my favourite character (Amber Benson being on of my favourite people too) has my second favourite Willow Line "I know that!". Then there's the reminder how much I missed Cordy; like Anya a lot, but Cordy she ain't. Finally this is, apart from an incredibly memorable episode later & the season finale, the last episode I truly enjoyed. For reasons that come very much later than those it's also the most heartbreaking episode of the entire series for me; only the duel Oz -departure eps from last season even coming close, kerk ps. Was cheering Rana on this ep; but Marketa was the clear winner in the best remark stakes :-)

    In the original 4x3 format, you don't actually keep seeing crew, boom mikes, etc. The 16x9 remaster was f'd up. Framing, lighting, etc were messed up.

    24:10 yeah.. I think there is a moderate consensus that it was better representation to have Tara be fully human, but it was a bit anti climactic. I think a nice compromise would be to give her some ability she was hiding because she thought it was demonic. Before this episode it could be used to misdirect tha audience. Afterwards it would become an open part of her repertoire, and also give her magic a distinct difference from Willow’s.
