    With timelapses, you can say goodbye to your shutter pretty quickly. Let's say you want to make a 1 minute long timelapse video with 30 frames per second framerate. This means you need 1800 shutter actuations (30fps x 60s) to get that result. I now only use video for timelapses, and record in 1080p, because that's the Instagram limit, and keeps my filesize low. I speedramp it in Premiere and that's it.

    The cons of video timelapse is we can't get photos out of it especially the post-process isn't possible. Photo timelapse can generate both video timelapse files and picture files when we process them on the right software.

    Never used an intervalometer for video? It saves only the frames needed for video and video is made in camera. You can set the timer for when it saves frames to whatever you want. Less file size than pictures.

    thank you Matthew, great information. The only problem I have with my 6Dmkii in timelapse movie mode is the minimum interval of 1 second between shots. For traffic I find I want continuous shooting about 0.5fps with 2sec shutter, but no intervals. The best I can do now is use my c300mkii at 1fps. Would you recommend going the stills route at this point for continuous 2second exposures? Thanks, Jon

    • @MatthewVandeputte
      @MatthewVandeputte  7 лет назад

      I'd recommend using an external remote, setting your shutter speed and locking the shutter button on the remote by pushing it down and sliding it forward. With the camera in drive mode it will keep shooting at it's max pace until your card is full or until your buffer is full.

    Great video. Subscribed. One thing you didnt mention is the intervals. Do you capture images every second, 5 minutes, 1 hour, ect and for what projects. Im going to rebuild my deck and wondering if I should do 1 or 5 seconds.

    • @MatthewVandeputte
      @MatthewVandeputte  3 года назад +1

      Cheers! Interval depends on how many photos you want to end up with, if you're shooting something like a deck build I'd go with 10 to 20 seconds instead (depending on how long you plan on taking). I've got a free e-book with more info if you're interested: www.matjoez.com/freebook

    Thanks Matthew! I have a question for you, or anyone really. I've been shooting some timelapses, editing the RAW files in Lightroom, then creating the timelapse within After Effects. The problem though is that the output file from AE is SEVERAL Gigabytes! My computer has a hard time creating and replaying a 10 GB file. Is there something I'm missing to make it smaller? Timelapse is only about 20 seconds long.

    • @MatthewVandeputte
      @MatthewVandeputte  6 лет назад

      Depending on your resolution it's normal to have huge files. I use apple prores hq codec and also end up with massive files.

    Many cinema camera style video cameras also include time-lapse functions in them.
    You are talking about simply speeding up 24/25/30 fps playback in Premiere Pro etc, if I am understanding you correctly, that's *not* what you want to do with a proper cinema video camera.
    For example, the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 2.5k and Production Camera 4k both have time-lapse built right into their recording functionality. You can choose to either record that time-lapse to 1920x1080 HD ProResHQ or to 2.5k QHD or 4k UHD CinemaDNG RAW files.
    So anyone with one of those cameras can essentially do time-lapse, in 12-bit raw, with 13 stops of dynamic range, so that the resulting time-lapse video sequence can be fully color-graded and edited.
    Plus you can use your Canon EF lenses...
    I was hoping that this video would give me some insight as to your thoughts on time-lapse with a cinema camera vs DSLR.
