- After the cop dramas that were Kuuga and Agito, Toei handed the reigns of Kamen Rider to the woman who gave us the exceptional Timeranger and Gingaman. Together with Toshiki Inoue, who served as Ryuki’s secondary writer, Yasuko Kobayashi created a show that was quite different from its predecessors, pitting the Kamen Riders against each other rather than having them all work together. The premise was that there were 13 riders in the world who had to battle each other to the death and that there could only be one. Many people have compared this storyline to the Highlander franchise with the battle royale styled story and the outcome being that the last survivor would be rewarded in the same manner as those in The Highlander. Can there only be one? Watch to find out.

Well, the reason why Femme wasn’t utilized in Rider Time Ryuki is because the actress that’s originally planned to reprise her role from Episode Final was pregnant at the time during its production. Although considering Inoue’s own track record regarding his writing towards most female characters, I am a bit fearful what role she would’ve gotten in the miniseries had Femme take part in the story as originally planned.
They could have still just had her in the suit. It's not like we actually saw the shark dude.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork you do realize this is Toshiki Inoue we're talking about, right?! The man is blatantly sexist towards writing female characters in most of the Tokusatsu shows and movies he has been involved in.
Given how much focus he put on Haruka in Donbrothers, I'm not so sure that is true.
Ryuki hold a special place in my heart as the first rider show I watch from the beginning to the end, thank you Malaysia NTV7. I admit I hate the ending because I was a little wee lad who only accept solving problem by punching, but now growing up I really glad they went with that ending, because Shinji may lost the battle, but he won the war
My issue with the ending is that I was tired of reset button endings since there were like 6 anime series that had done it at the time.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkWell, at least the Rider Time Ryuki special made up for the TV show's God-awful finale by giving us the real ending to Kamen Rider Ryuki's story.
At least until the Rider Time Ryuki special retconned the show's finale.
The real reason why Kamen Rider Abyss (the shark-based Kamen Rider from Kamen Rider Decade) was in the Rider Time Ryuki special was because Femme's original actress, Natsuki Kato (Miho Kirishima) was pregnant at the time. They had already finished filming the special and she wasn't available to return due to her pregnancy back then.
So there's your answer.

It's great.
Ryuki is a fascinating show. Many people say it's great for its characters, the innovations it made for the franchise, and the action above all others. Others hat it for having so many unlikable Riders, a reset button ending that makes everything pointless, and the show itself and what it stands for going against everything the franchise has been about and its ideals.
I may watch it myself to get my own opinions, but it's definitely a contentious show in every aspect. I will give it credit for helping lead the franchise into the standard we know of Kamen Rider today and its concepts that are pretty much taken for granted these days.
Even with its reset ending, it's still a solid experience over all.

That's what it feels like.
To be fair, the plot hinges on the Riders killing each other. So, when Shinji stops them from murdering one another, he is ostensibly stopping the plot from moving forward. I also draw the line at him being unwilling to kill Asakura. That's a situation where more people, and innocent people unlike most of the riders, would be hurt by inaction than actually doing something. That's my personal reason for disliking him.
After watching episode 1 of the original show, I have to admit: I've got a hankering for Kamen Rider, and since no cult distributor in the UK, be it Arrow, Eureka or even one of our Anime distributors has decided to license it, I think I'll either use a VPN to watch Shout TV, or import one of Shout's Blu-Rays.
TBH, it's either Kuuga and its incredible turn-of-the-millennium homage to classic toku in Ishinomori's honour with surprisingly good CGI to boot and badass sequential transformations, or Ryuki with its modernisation, introduction of the "pretty boys with problems" formula that the franchise mostly stuck with up to 2013's Kamen Rider Gaim, awesome suit designs, famous twist of one rider against many in his battles against evil and, of course... *ALIVE A LIFE.* [awesome J-pop intensifies]

i love that gimmick that the riders weapons are part of their contract beast, though some of them you have to REALLY look close at to figure out where its from, but the only one that confuses me is Knights lance thing, what part of the bat did THAT come from?

the rider suits felt hit or miss granted with so many in a series for the first time and all makes sense was still some cool stuff.
the personalities were fun all balancing each other.
the effects and fights were sweet too
similair things with the monsters which I liked how they killed people.
The only suit I didn't really care for was Verde and Raia's.

Toei re used the battle Royale themed rider series for the current rider series airing right now, kamen rider geats where the riders battle in a series of games against an evil group and when the rider with most points wins, their desire is granted

Watched the blue ray of Ryuki and in total, I've watched Ryuki four times. It's that good and why I feel Geats is inferior. I also love Ryuki himself as a character as everyone else. Wish Scissors and Gai were in more episodes. I suggest other Kamen Rider fans to watch this series.

Honestly I love the setup, rider suites, and some ideas of the show however excacution it wasn't really good expecually Yui but they handelled alot of riders pretty well way better than Ex-Aid ever did so there's that.🐻

Ryuki was my first full kamen rider series I watched. Without it and Dragon Knight I would've never become the Rider fan I am now.
Not including Ryuga, Verde, Femme, and Abyss in the full series and giving us 14 riders just is an odd choice

One of the things that confused me in rider time was if Kanzaki didn't make those drawings if it followed the og ending how would the mirror world still exist.
I just figured the riders in Time where those erased by Ren hitting the reset button.

story wise, dragon knight is really interesting as it takes the 13 rider battle royale plot and make something completely unique by having the mirror world be a planet known as ventara. the only down side with the show is that the show sadly filmed in 4:3 instead of hd like ryuki was and the music is not as great as ryuki's soundtrack
Dragon Knight has a lot of good ideas, but it's lack of budget for sound effects does hurt it a lot.

KR was using video, because Sentai still had that grainate film that look 1970's, and KR was still in revivial mode. Smart move for Toei to go video with KR. But Sentai was getting its upgrades soon enough.
Same reason why UK TV went all in with video in many shows including DW going all in with video in 1986 starting with Trial of a Time Lord and Sylvester McCoy three years as the Doctor. Not counting the Tom Baker stories Robot, Sontaran Experiment, Seeds of Doom, and Stones of Blood which were all outdoor video stories.
Either way, video tape can still only be upscaled.

Honestly i think it’s weird that aside from this show and Kamen Rider Black, none of the Kamen rider show were brought to the US, i think Kiva, Agito, and OOO would be great in the US.
Honestly I would say Dragon Knight did quite a few things better than Ryuki. Not enough to necessarily make it better overall, but enough were it's easy to see why people who don't like Ryuki like Dragon Knight. In regards to the mirror world scenes, from what I understand they just filmed in those locations and flipped the footage. They made mirrored versions of the rider's costumes for those scenes as well.
That is an interesting tidbit about them using reversed costumes. Thanks.
(31:13-32:16) Like I said in your Blade review, early Heisei era had this weird tendency to have Toshiki Inoue write two episodes, which were ALWAYS episodes 29 and 30, for a season that he didn't wrote. And just like everything that wasn't originally made by Inoue and he's suddenly involved in, they fucking SUCKED. I'm serious, Inoue is absolutely incapable of writing from what others created.
It's weird because Inoue is a genius when he writes his own stuff or with Ryuki when he wrote a third of the series. However, yeah, when he does like 2 random episodes, they're not very good.
Given the kind of character Asakura is, no wonder "The Heroes" section is replaced with "The Kamen Riders". Because he's the last person you would call a hero on this show. Although he does have the same first name as Takeshi Hongo, the very first Kamen Rider. Awkward.

Speaking of Agito, I kinda regret watching it so early in my Rdier viewing, it pretty much makes everything that comes after it inferior lol.
As for Ryuki, I like it up until Tiger debuts. After that and especially the ending is when the show gets frustrating to watch.
I didn't forget, I just didn't deem it necessary.

I like Shinji and I don't think it is fair to hate him just because he is a sillier rider. His purpose was to be the audience's point of view.

Ryuki was my first heisei rider that I truly expose into the franchise, Black was my first showa rider due to fact that Black was a nostalgia/childhood days here in the philippines.
What I like in Ryuki's aspect is the;
1. Battle Royal
2. Rider suits
3. Advent card
4. Mirror world
5. Oujia is one of my favorite villains (the writer of this show truly loves his characterization)
My only negative I have is the final episode, that episode was executive meddling imho during the rider time ryuki was the..... uhmmm what heck did to my HOMIE GAI AND RAIA THEY BECAME B.L (only girls loves Boys Love). Anyway, Ryuki is also one of my favorite heisei rider of all time because of story and elements of this show.
Oh yeah i forgot the opening song was also my favorite, its not because the singer is the seiyuu of Ash/Satoshi in pokemon. It's because of the song itself was catchy.
Gai and Raia was an interesting development, but nothing I found to be bad.

I saw Ryuki on Pluto TV and while it was good with the music and plot. However, I was disappointed with the lack of 13 riders they promoted throughout the original series.

I would totally be down for Flash and Geki next, but I couldn't care less if they go in order or not. If they do Shinken though, it needs to be BD.

I remember when I tried to watch ryuki and , I kinda I gave up on it after a few episodes . And it was mainly because it was really just kind of boring to me like the action was fine to me and The characters just didn’t leave a good impression on me and Shinji annoyed me. however I’m also someone who believes in giving a show a second chance so I’ll probably do that right after I finish its American adaptation.

I'm starting to think Kame Rider might not be for me I really was a Giant Monster movie and tv show fan first not so much all toku. I'm trying to get through Ryuki but it's just similar to Kuuga for me just not feeling it seems to be dragging I'm on episode 9 I will continue with it but Kamen Rider Zero-One that hooked me from the beginning and I couldn't get enough of that one.
I've never actually heard someone say Ryuki was similar to Kuuga before.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Not exactly the same style but pacing to me. Instead of the investigating in Kuuga it's just always the journalist angle investigating. The monsters attack random and first it was antiques not sure if there is a connected story or reason. The continuity with the attacks is just not flowing sometimes they can come out of the mirrors but then they can't fight outside it's just very weird with the mirrors and how it all works. It seems by the time it starts picking up and there is a fight the episode ends. Kamen Rider Zero-one was my first one and I liked the pace and story characters and loved the fights and action.
I like Zero-One, but that show had way too many form changes and sacrified story telling for gimmicks at times. I do feel like Ryuki does pick up after Ouja comes into play though.

One issue I do have with Ryuki isn’t so much either the show itself but more so with Asakura. Now I really like Asakura but my main issue is how he seems to be a fan favorite not just with fans but also Toei as he appears… a LOT. First he appears in an Ex Aid Beast Riders V Cinema. Ok not too bad. Nice little cameo for a returning actor. Then he appears in Rider Time. Ok makes sense it is a reunion special for most of the Ryuki riders. Then he appears in Outsiders, uh ok getting a little extreme here, his fate in Rider Time was perfectly fine. And now he’s slated to appear in the Kamen Rider Geats movie special with a couple of other Ryuki riders. Ok now it’s getting kinda ridiculous. I don’t really count his appearances in Decade vs Dai Shocker or Kamen Rider 4 since they were suit only appearances, but I guess I’ll slightly count the Decade movie he does have speaking lines in that movie. Like it’s good to know his actor likes coming back for the role but it does feel a bit much that he just constantly shows up.

I have no idea what Outsiders is, but it makes sense to keep bringing back a fan favorite. Tsuburaya does it with Ultraman all of the time. Though, I do agree.

The coroner determined that it was due to them getting lost and catching hypothermia, while other experts say that they ran into a bear. But the hikers’ camera and the extent of their injuries say otherwise. The bodies were mutilated and their camp torn apart as if by some massive creature. You might think I’m crazy, but I believe it was a yeti, Bigfoot’s cousin. The location and the extent of the lacerations on their bodies confirm my theory. I believe it woke up from hibernation and killed the hikers for food. And if you look at two of the pictures in their camera you’ll see that someone or something was following them. I decided to write a found footage book in the perspective of the victims and see if I can figure out through the power of god what they saw before they lost their lives

How so? I haven't seen his review, but from what people have told me, he hated it. He also hated Blade, so Shinta and I seem to be exact opposites on what we want out of a rider show.

As for Ryuki he felt it’s constant derision of various aspects of heroism undermines the values of what a Kamen Rider is as established by the Showa era. The show left many things unexplained and badly handled. When your show has 15 riders and only one of them lives up to the title and it’s not even the main character, that’s a problem. “One of my central views about the characterization of a Kamen Riders is, it’s not enough for them to seek to protect others, they must also give in someway of themselves in securing that safety more permanently. It’s not just limited to letting yourself get fatally wounded to save someone and/or defeating all monsters that pose a threat to others to earn it, it’s in how you must seek to stop threats more permanently, even if they are human, if they are a legitimate threat to others, but only if they are such and there are no better options.” In this light he saw nothing of this from Shinji on more than a superficial level. The closest we got was as the series ended, and he finally started to take the war seriously, but by then it was far too late as he had wasted every previous chance that he was given and the results of the decisions he actually made had built a body count that he never acknowledges. His indecisiveness and constant backpedaling ultimately caused more harm than it prevented. There is plenty more, but I highly recommend you look for his Ryuki reviews either here or on dailymotion.

One of the many Toku shows I got and watched over the holidays. My least favorite season I’ve watched so far, but that’s not really fair to say since I’ve only watched 5 seasons so far. Also, in the show or movie do they say that Shinji and his boss went to college together? As well as Zolda having cancer. The latter one is inferred but I don’t remember either of them being outright said. Also not that it’s a big deal but she’s actually Yui’s aunt not grandmother lol
I don't remember where they mention it, it was early on in the series. As for the Zolda having cancer, it's brought up in the scene when Shimada is in the hospital and she hears the nurses talking after he bumps into her. Ren also brings it up towards the tail end when Kitaoka passes out. Well, you are right that it isn't straight up said in the show, it is inferred and there was some sort of interview back then where it was said to be cancer.

And they are not just similar, they are basically 'mirror imimage' of each other.

Kamen Rider Ryuki is Similar to Yugioh both tv shows was made in 2002 they have Cards system they fight to survive in a alternate universe like the mirror world or Shadow realm and in season 1 of Yugioh the winner of the cards will get $1,000 or some crap at the tournament just like Ryuki how in the final episode they'll get a wish or some crap

Ryuki didn't have movies for a canonical ending either though. The ending to teh show is the actual ending. Anyway, like I said, Ryuki is just a better series. Better style, better acting, better characters, better music, better camerawork, and a better mystery. Dragon Knight did remember to put in all 13 riders, but it lacked in those other areas.
0:00 No decapitations of monsters, otherwise Dragon Knight would have been on Cable television, possibly on Cartoon Network (then again it would still be the best show on that awful block that is CN real.)
This is a reference to how to how to Metalder (which was by design to be a dark show to begin with) and by extension VR Troopers had decapitations which was quite gruesome for a kids show for syndication, If it wasn't syndicated It would have been on cable most likely Nickelodeon thanks to Saban not cutting out said gruesome moments. I imagine the phone calls would have been filling in in the '90s of angry parents.

Yeah when Shout actually gets masters from Toei, considering Darth Dumbass (and by that I mean SHINRAKURA) doesn't like Western adaptations. (See his hatred of Super Sentai and Its Western counterpart Power Rangers.) Considering I heard nothing but good things about that series. Guess KR is cursed to have not very successful Western adaptations either financially or critically.
