Making Tall Pottery Vases from Beginning to End

- This week's video shows the creation of some taller bud vase forms, from start to finish. Made from a high iron stoneware clay and reduction fired with a variety of crackle glazes to 1290ºc over a nine hour period. Yes for firing pots with that spiral! That could be a fantastic effect, especially with those glazes that pool at the bottom and give a slightly different colour.

Every time I watch one of your videos I'm amazed at your dedication to the practicality of your pieces. Most of the time in ceramics and pottery, people don't think about how their work could or should be used, but you're always thinking ahead and planning for how you want to lay things out. Love it 👏👏👏

Something I can't get over is that you yourself look delicate like your pots. You have a soft and delicate touch even when it is firm. And yet you lift these boards loaded with products like they weigh nothing at all. You Sir, are a beast!

I love families of pottery (like your amazing bowls with different tall foot rings)--so yes to firing with that spiral and pairing it with a smoother vase, and adding a slightly shorter bud vase to the trio (for those shorter stemmed flowers that need a different proportion), and a bud vase with a heavier base for top heavy sunflowers... Beautiful work as always.

12:15 I had the EXACT same Idea when I saw the spiral. I would love to see what you could do if you made some pieces where you focused on accentuating the trimming marks/playing with them, as opposed to smoothing them out.

Teaching is a skill unto itself, and it's so interesting to listen to you speak of things I'm not entirely concious of when making as it's just become wordless internalized experience. It's enlightening to hear someone explain why I'm doing what I do (and how/why your choices sometimes differ).

Question:
Have you or would you consider making bonsai pots? Your specific style and color pallet would be fantastic for cascade bonsai, as well as some kusamono and shitakusa pots. Only real change to your technique that'd be asked for is a main drainage hole and at least two smaller holes for wires to feed through and hold the plant steady.
I´m so much in love with the cylindrical teapot which has a tiny ledge around its waist and a short spout. *=)*

Lots I could do! But somewhat annoyingly it looks like it’ll happen at the same time as my busiest time of the year in the studio, that being said, hopefully I’ll have another shop update sometime towards the end of this month, or the beginning of December, so that’ll work!

I like to use wax resist on the bottom of my pots when glazing, or to protect other areas I don’t want glazed. Do you use it often?
I do indeed use wax for all of my pots! I think I just forgot to film that part for this video.

.hello Florian. you did say that before unpacking the kiln "it will sit at 150degreesCelsius for days and days"? That means that you apply some heat to keep it at that temperature for many days! Is there a good reason for that? Thanks.
No, the kiln stays warm until the door is opened because it’s quite well insulated (otherwise it would take a lot more energy to get it up to 1290°C), and takes a long time to cool. It also takes longer to drop a certain number of degrees the closer it gets to room temperature, simply because the temperature difference between the kiln and the studio is smaller.
If I can ask why at by b the bottom of the kiln is there peices that have already been in the kiln with glaze

u have to fire it after glazing so it turns shiny
