Sgraffito, (Italian: “scratched”), in the visual arts, a technique used in painting, pottery, and glass, which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another, and then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower color. My parents had an art pottery business in Calcutta, India in the 1955 - 1980's era. I used to spend my summers in the factory too. We made a lot of handmade items for sale domestically or to ship overseas. It was a small but busy production crew. Everything was thrown on the wheel or molded by hand. A British artist called John French visited (among other notaries) and he did a lot of plates with this Sgraffito technique. The plates were mold cast with a low fired white clay, then dipped into liquid red terracotta clay, leather hardened, then scratched out with typical mid century designs. There cannot be any bleeding of colors, so you cannot finish off with a wet rag as normal, but with a dry stiff brush. Then they were bisque fired and then dipped into transparent glaze like you see here. The glaze must be uniform on the whole surface, so this must be done with skill. Bottom ring must be wiped of glaze so it does not stick to the firebrick in the kiln. Then fired a second time for the lustrous design to emerge. There is only one clear glaze on it, but two clays below. My English teacher in college (Bombay) had a whole set of them. They were so pretty with the deep red brown plates and white incised designs. I miss my parent's factory and the smell of clay baking in the kilns, and wet clay drying on plaster bats. There is such an art and joy in handmade things. The artist lives on in the object long after he/she is gone. This was wonderful to watch.

I have shot and produced almost 100 "how it's made" industrial videos and I would like to congratulate the Producers of this video. Well done!

Fantastisches Handwerk
How much does this one piece cost?
Especially ceramic from that company(Kwnagju yo) in clip, cost about 300$ per 10 piece.
Pottery poetry !
