  • The weekend of April 20th 2008 was a big one for IndyCar. Two races on the same day, one in Motegi Japan, and the other in Long Beach California. Both races made IndyCar history, but in this video we focus on Danica Patrick's big win in Japan.

Fuel mileage wins are weird. I get people giving her flack for it. But at the same time if you watched how she did it, she knew from the start of the stint she had to conserve. It's hard as a racing driver to convince yourself to get passed and stay driving slower than you know you can go. She did it and saved at the right time in the right places to where she could run faster at the end of the race than Castroneves and was able to save more than the rest of those on the same strategy. I give her credit for it. It wasn't everyone else's miscalculation giving her the win. It was her being one of the only ones willing to do what was necessary for the long haul to make it work.

Racing isn't all about being the fastest for the entire race, it's about thinking spatially and being able to comprehend and calculate the factors of the entire race with your team while you are in the car. There's nothing illegitimate about her win at all. She did what other drivers didn't think to do, and that allowed her to take the flag first. It doesn't matter how you got there, it's getting there that counts and she did.

Also her 3rd place in 2009 was very impressive!

Sadly, the rain delay screwed everything up, but the Champ Car guys were more than ready to put extra drivers into their cars. I miss the Panoz DP-01. Then when I heard that there would be a first time rookie woman driver in an Indy race I was amazed by her courage and confidence that she could be among men in an Indy car race. So I watched her as many times that I could somehow fascinated that she would take to the ovals every time and gave me a feeling of hope that she could overcome the odds of winning a race. Well, I had a fallout with NASCAR and wasn't as interested any longer as I always wanted to she this woman race again. No I am a big fan of INDY car racing cause of you Danica Patrick and I hope you continue to raise the flag of the sport you love best to continue to be an inspiration to the next generation of women in this sport. I am not sure that Danica was good for the sport. Her presence as a rookie in the starting grid of the 2005 Indy 500 caused ABC to have their worst Indy 500 telecast of the century. The pre-race broadcast was all a "Danica Patrick", and one of the worst on record. During the race it got even worse, as the race announcer, Todd "Fan Boyz" Harris referred to how Danica was doing almost every single minute of the race. The worst was on lap 155, when Danica spun her car on the Caution, taking 5 other drivers (including Tomas Scheckter) completely out of the race, but all ABC focuses on was Danica racing back to the pits to get her nose cone changed. At no time during the race did ABC even mention who the other drivers were that she knocked out.

Racing is not always about going fast. Well I mean it is but strategy comes to play also and it takes a team to win a race and not just the driver. Gotta build competitive cars and have flawless pit crews, crew chief, spotters and one mistake by anyone is the difference between winning and losing. I remember her leading the Indy 500 with two laps to go and she ran out of gas. So how ever you look at it the entire team beat everyone else's entire team to win the race. She wasn't conserving fuel at the end of the race! she was racing. Everyone else made a mistake and lost the race.
