  • In this video, we head out from snowy Dunnet Bay CAMC Campsite (see our tour & review video) in our Roller Team Auto Roller 707 with our 2 rescue chihuahuas.
First stop is nuclear power station, Dounreay, which is in the process of being decommissioned. Then it's back on the road on the hunt for a coffee.
Checking the map, we remembered that @billyandleanne had gone to The Store Cafe in Bettyhill, which was close to the main route of the NC500. Managing to park up outside, we fell in love with this quirky shop and cafe. We received a warm welcome both in temperature with a lovely real fire, and from the staff. It was sunny outside so although it wasn't the warmest, we ate our breakfast sandwiches and drank our Americano and flat white on the picnic benches outside, admiring the lovely view.
Next milestone was Tongue Bridge. We parked up and had a stroll to look at the stunning mountain views. Sadly the octopus sign I'd seen on Google and was keen to see, was not in evidence.
Our final part of the drive took us to Sango Sands Oasis in Durness (full campsite tour and review coming soon). Our pitch at Dunnet Bay had been amazing, but this one surpassed it with ease! As the weather was beautifully sunny and it was still relatively early, we walked to the spectacular Smoo Cave.
As the evening was supposed to be relatively clear, we set up a time-lapse and managed to capture the Northern Lights (aurora borealis)!

I agree with your opinion of The Store Cafe. I have visited it several times over the Spring and Summer and enjoyed great food and hospitality. You campervanners miss out on a lot though. I see you drove straight through Thurso for instance. The Visitors centre on the main shopping street is well worth a visit and it has a good cafe too! I was there today and was impressed by local art exhibition they were holding, then there's the museum to visit as well.

Thanks! I think most holidays that don't involve staying in one place can miss out on a lot, as it's tough fitting everything in (and trying to do it justice). Thurso did look nice as we drove through it. We will definitely come back to the area at some point and probably target a smaller area so there's less travelling and more time to explore 👍

Yes, While you were in Durness I wonder if you visited the Craft Centre? Just down the road from there is the Golf Course. If you thought the town beach was nice you would have loved the beaches down there! ( by the golf course )

Was the parking free? Must have been you're not moaning about it
