Soul Reaver felt so radical at the time for making the previous protagonist the primary antagonist in the sequel. It's not that vampires are allergic to water. They aren't. Vampires are dissolved by naturally running water. They could take a swim in the ocean or a lake or a pool with no problem, but they can't cross a stream or a river without it killing them. The folklore behind this is because supposedly Jesus was baptized in a river, and since vampires are pure evil, now it hurts them, same as with crosses and holy water.

Soul Reaver has an insane amount of cut content, the remaster could bring it back in. Also as much I love this game (and series), it could definitely use some improvements or straight up reworked mechanics (especially combat and platforming).
As a long time LoK fan, I am torn on this. A remaster restoring the cut content would probably erase the rest of the series, which developed a fairly fascinating story, and one of the few time-travelling narratives where historical retcons were handled well and were actually part of the greater scheme. It should totally be _revamped_ in terms of controls and fighting mechanics, though. Remember how useless the last vampire boss ability was, aside from a couple mandatory puzzles? Or the over-reliance on matching cubes puzzles? I could definetly do with fewer of those.
@@Zeburaman2005 I went through the entire Soul Reaver without getting 1 single ability upgrade. It was still ridiculously easy. This game was amazing, I couldn't believe how great the VA and music and atmosphere were, not to mention no loading times after the initial load -- even when switching between the two world states.
This franchise has a lot of potential but it seems that Sqaure is no interested in bringing this back. Hell, even with the return of the platformers they never bothered to make a port or a remaster of Gex (antoher property from Crystal Dynamics). They should sell the rights to someone who actually cares.
We definitely need a remake in the style of the new final fantasy 7. Especially for Blood Omen. Imagine that large open world from a 3rd person perspective and how amazing the dungeons would be!
"Be aware that in the spectral realm, water has neither heft, nor lift. It stands as thin as air." Only Tony Jay can make a blatant admission that they couldn't give the game water physics sound classy and foreboding as hell.
I honestly do love how you can't take about Legacy of Kain without someone demanding a remake. If they did, all I ask is that they keep the dialogue audio the same because the voice acting is absolute perfection, and that the originals be included as completion bonuses.
Tony Jay was also Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Soul Reaver was a technical marvel as it is theoretically one large stage with areas locked behind abilities... like how Kain is tucked away just past the ruins of the Sanctuary (early area you access) but Raziel needs to obtain Melchiah's ability to get to him.
Raziel (and Melchiah) was voiced by Michael Bell. He was the voice behind as Sideswipe in transformers, The Fear in MGS3 and Medivh in Warcraft III. God bless this gentleman and Simon Templeman (Kain's VA).
Square needs to stop sleeping on this Franchise, wtf. Defiance, imo, had one of the best boss fights in gaming history, Raziel vs Kain split screen action was awesome. I played the shit out of that game. Its an obvious departure from the original Soul Reaver, but could only imagine them combining the gameplay elements of both Soul Reavers and LoK Defiance, with camera control of course.
Even if they do try and make another LoK or better yet, a sequel, it will be very much difficult to replace or mimic Tony Jay(Elder God's VA) or if Michael Bell is able to voice Raziel in his current age.
Played the hell out of Soul Reaver back in the days and it bearly worked on my PC (got like 3-6 fps tops). But the atmosphere, that intro(!) and lore kept me coming for more. I would love to see a proper remake. Also, Matt you can throw spears. I think it's cool addition to the combat.
I love legacy of kain. I even bought the dlc for guardian of light. Such epic quotes. They had a pc collection recently on humble bundle and it didn’t include blood omen so maybe some issues with the rights for that game.
@@Zeburaman2005 yeah but I know CD and them went to court over the rights and obviously there was a blood omen 2. @@wannabkain4400 If I remember correctly, Blood Omen 2 started as a sequel to Chakan: The Forever Man for Genesis before being repurposed as a LoK game. I think that by that time, Silicon Knights had lost any claim to the rights for Blood Omen, since the original had been produced on behalf of either Eidos or Crystal Dynamics. Also, I think the dispute was over SK having plans to make their own sequel to Blood Omen. Their have been some rumors saying Denis Dyack was rather mad when he found out about Soul Reaver. I'd love to see a "wha happun?" for this series. Especially when you get to Nosgoth, the psudo-sequel/alternate timeline thing that went multiplayer only.
A charnel house is a building where human bones are stored, like a mausoleum but less organized. Vampires were traditionally weak against running water because it is the essence of life. Generally, this referred to rivers and streams, not to oceans or lakes. Other vampiric weaknesses were regional. Some had to count grain if you threw it at them and could not defend themselves until they picked it all up. Other vampires had to always wear hats (not even joking). Silver, garlic, sunlight, and oak stakes are common vulnerabilities based on the European vampire mythos.
I´d be great to see a Wha Happun episode about Nosgoth. I remember seeing gameplay footage and suddenly nothing happened. It was cancelled for some reason.
Any attempt to remake this game would absolutely require the original voice actors. Without Tony Jay (RIP), the whole story's going to lose a lot of atmosphere. Destroy All Humans reused its original voice clips, so at least we've seen it's possible to do that pretty well. If you ever do a Wha' Happun, The Lost Worlds is a great resource for everything regarding the series, including some massive write ups on deleted content and how the game changed so substantially to meet its deadline. The entire ending and several levels regarding it were canned, and only this year were alpha copies found that allowed us to visit these legendary zones.
One of my favourite franchises and games. Such epic storytelling, voice acting and music. Such a shame that the story ended on a cliffhanger with no sequel in sight. You should definitely do more Soul Reaver.
Why so little love for Blood Omen, although it is the most complex game of the series, gameplay wise? Sure, it's basically top-down Legend of Zelda with a vampire protagonist, yet I find it one of the most rounded vampiric gameplay experience next to both Vampire: The Masquerade games.

Definitely want to see a "What Happened" on Legacy of Kain!
Oh and on the melee thing you forgot the spirit form of the soul reaver
We 100% need Waht Happun For this franchise!!!
I very much wanna see a Wuh Happun on this series. It is one of my top time all time favorite times of all time. I am not sober. I will not apologise.
Man I love Legacy of Kain's dialogue, its like hearing honey while you play a Tomb Raider game.
A "WHA HAPPUN?" for the whole LoK series would be absolutely fucking awesome.
The outtakes reel for Defiance shows how hard voice acting is
Also, Razel Voice actor is o.g. Shaggy
I’ve been saying a next gen reboot of this would be epic asf.
Yeah, soul reaver 2 had no loading times and with the PS5 / Xbox SX tech it would be awesome.
Matt Raziel is voiced by Michael Bell who voiced The FEAR in MGS3, Medivh in Warcraft 3, Guts in Sword of the Berserk, and Lawrence in Ratchet and Clank series.
The Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver series would make a fascinating Wha Happun.
Please do give a "What Happened?" Please give us something....GIVE US ANYTHING!!!!!
Yes please do a what happened, this series is so underrated
I just got the urge to add a raziel figure to my collection and was reminded how much i love this series (it also helped the guy selling them was selling them for a 1/3 of their current aftermarket price) would love for a top down remake like we got with Crash, Shadows of the Colossus, etc.
Tony Jay's voice is one you will never forget, especially growing up as a kid watching cartoons in the 90s
Now I want to see Matt play the rest of the soul reaver series and defiance!
yes please to a what happened! I heard the reason this series has been so weird is lots of legal problems between who owns what and stuff like that, would love to learn more about it!
I loved this game, loved this series and still annoyed that the final game ended in a cliffhanger and they never returned to it.
Please do a "wha happun?" on this series!
This game was amazing, I couldn't believe how great the VA and music and atmosphere were, not to mention no loading times after the initial load -- even when switching between the two world states.
I would love to see a Wha Happun on the first Soul Reaver especially since we're FINALLY getting a remaster.
Favorite PS1 action-vania game, of all time.
She wanted to make a Gothic mixed Shakespeare storyline, she's done some QA on Twitter you should check em out
Yes definitely a What Happened for LOK!
Agreed, this series needs an HD remaster soo bad.
This franchise has a lot of potential but it seems that Sqaure is no interested in bringing this back. Hell, even with the return of the platformers they never bothered to make a port or a remaster of Gex (antoher property from Crystal Dynamics). They should sell the rights to someone who actually cares.
That and Fighting Force...
We definitely need a remake in the style of the new final fantasy 7. Especially for Blood Omen. Imagine that large open world from a 3rd person perspective and how amazing the dungeons would be!
"Be aware that in the spectral realm, water has neither heft, nor lift. It stands as thin as air."
Only Tony Jay can make a blatant admission that they couldn't give the game water physics sound classy and foreboding as hell.
You were able to swim eventually.
I honestly do love how you can't take about Legacy of Kain without someone demanding a remake. If they did, all I ask is that they keep the dialogue audio the same because the voice acting is absolute perfection, and that the originals be included as completion bonuses.
Legacy of Kain should come back with Blood Omen and Soul Raver get a full remake or remaster fans would buy it
Still one of the most underrated series ever made.
I've played the first Soul Reaver and Blood Omen games countless times, I love 'em!
Fun fact. The emblem on Raziel cloak is the same one on Kamala Khan’s scarf in The Avengers game, also developed by Crystal Dynamics.
More of this series please Matt!
Gonna need that What happened for the legacy of Kain
Raziel (and Melchiah) was voiced by Michael Bell. He was the voice behind as Sideswipe in transformers, The Fear in MGS3 and Medivh in Warcraft III. God bless this gentleman and Simon Templeman (Kain's VA).
Holy hell, how fast I clicked when I saw this was Soul Reaver. 😍 Probably still one of my favorite games of ALL time! 💕
I would love more videos about this series, it seems like almost no one talks about it, and they are my favorite games of all time
I was even a pretty big fan of the multi-player game Nosgoth, im sure that one would make for a great wha happun
A "charnel house" is absolutely a high falutin', gothic brothel. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
"You may abandon your physical body at any time."
Insert Kingdom Hearts Winnie the Pooh gif
I love legacy of kain. I even bought the dlc for guardian of light. Such epic quotes. They had a pc collection recently on humble bundle and it didn’t include blood omen so maybe some issues with the rights for that game.
Blood Omen was developed by now defunct studio Silicon Knights, so that might be the reason.
@@Zeburaman2005 yeah but I know CD and them went to court over the rights and obviously there was a blood omen 2. It is probably more likely Blood omen needs you to run it in older windows optimising to make it run. Remember last time I tried to play it on pc even doing that kain and time was moving to fast to play. Shame because ps1 version is so slow.
Regarding playing Blood Omen on modern hardware, I think you will find the contents of this link very useful.
verokster.blogspot.com/2018/05/legacy-of-kain-blood-omen-gl-wrapper.html?m=1
Wow I just discover LoK two weeks ago! I’m sooo glad ppl are still talking about this amazing series!!!
Yes, please more Legacy of Kain. I'd like to see what you'd think of Blood Omen 2 and Defiance. SR2 is my favorite but it's the most story heavy one.
Why so little love for Blood Omen, although it is the most complex game of the series, gameplay wise? Sure, it's basically top-down Legend of Zelda with a vampire protagonist, yet I find it one of the most rounded vampiric gameplay experience next to both Vampire: The Masquerade games.
@@Zeburaman2005 There's no lack of love for Blood Omen. That's the #1 LoK game that needs to be remade. It's just a game I prefer playing to seeing played. Blood Omen and Soul Reaver are the best in the series all around, I just prefer the story of Soul Reaver 2 due to the acting and character revelations.
Doing another Legacy of Kain game is nigh impossibile now. Tony Jay aka Elder God is dead. René Auberjonois aka Janos Audron is dead. It just wouldn't feel right.
Jeremy Irons might be an adequate choice for the Elder God. Janos, though, that's a tough one. I got nothin.'
Paul David Lukather who voiced Vorador in the series is also unfortunately dead as well if Vorador was to be used again.
Odo is dead? Fuck. I missed that. That's unfortunate.
new voice actors are an easy choice to take if someone decides to remaster this series
Kains V.O is dead as well
I'm glad to see the series has been having a resurgance as of late. I started uploading SR on my other channel about a year ago, then _all_ these vids started appearing in my home feed and I'm not upset about it.
Yo, I’m gonna need that LOK “what happun”
one of my favourite game series as a kid, even though my dumb child brain couldn't comprehend the story i was engrossed by the voice acting. though i played it in the dumbest order possible, by starting with blood omen 2
I definitely wanna see a What Happened, you could make it specifically for the cancelled Dead Sun and the released Nosgoth multiplayer game.
They need to bring Amy Hennig back since she's apparently not working on anything else at the moment.
I was so relieved that Dead Sun got shitcanned. A whole game of that godawful writing would have given me an aneurysm.
I will never understand why people hype up Dead Sun when Square made it with the *specific* intent of dumbing everything down.
@@MagicalManFromMars I don't remember anyone hyping up Dead Sun. Looked like an ill-conceived Asscreed knockoff with bad writing and no connection to Kain or Razael but it makes for an interesting story of a failed attempt to reboot the franchise and a good subject for a wha happun video.
@@hannibalcase1100 Me too. Unlike most games that get cancelled I think the general consensus with this one is that of relief and indifference rather than disappointment. It looked like another tonally-misguided franchise-killer just like Thi4f.
@@chemergency believe me, I've seen it all over different comments sections whenever people bring up LoK, even when the small bit of footage for the game surfaced. People thought it was going to be on the level of other cut titles like Dark Prophecy or Prodigal Son, but didn't realize how actually bad it was.
dude, every single game in the LOK series is rife with behind the scenes drama perfect for Wha Happun.
more lets plays too please. this is such an amazing series and it needs more eyeballs on it.
YES!!! This was my favorite game as a teenager and still is one of my favorites today.
I love this series so much! I'd love a Wha' Happun of LoK!
THANK YOU! Man, we deserve more of this series.
Looks like Darksiders is the spiritual successor to Legacy of Kain
Time fades even legend...
He also played the old 'I love it!' asylum curator from Beauty and the Beast.
This is awesome
Vampire weakness to moving water is about old belief that spirits can't cross water (and vampires are undead so yeah thats where its from)
Definitely do a What Happened for this series. :D Also, this game is perfect in every way except for the huge HUGE amount of block puzzles. But eh, I dont mind it. Still one of my favorite games of all time. Lol
I don't know about that, I actually had to call the shop I bought it at back in the days to solve the level loading bug in the PS1 version. But I guess having to open and close the console's lid to refresh the data streaming kind of added to the overall charm of the experience.
I remember a developer saying that each week the team would hand in a new puzzle and they were almost always block puzzles.
@@ShinTheSilverDemon Oh wow, seriously? XD
"C'mon man give us something... Anything" took the words right out of my mouth
I'm happy to see you're shedding some light on this forgotten gem. I would love it if you made a Wha Happun on Legacy of Kain. This series needs more love.
Oh man, did I plant the seeds for this on the Nuts and Bolts video?! So glad you had fun with this! If you've got more in you, please do more on the series!
Should you look into doing more Legacy of Kain content?
Your loyal viewers: “Cast him in!”
We need that "What Happun"!!
Please do make a Wha Happun, the death of this franchise is probably one of the saddest tragedies in gaming history
