I adore Kain's monologue at the Pillars. I really recommend that people take the time to listen to what he is trying to explain. I think the deeper message applies to more then just the situation in the game

The way this would apply beyond the game is how often we find ourselves trapped into this line of thinking, that we only have limited choices and actions to proceed, when in reality there are more options we usually don't consider or realize that they exist or dismiss them for being unlikely or hard.
Matt's talking about water in the series, but Raziel learns to swim in the original game, which is why you can swim here, I don;t remember there being anything particularly funky about how water behaved in 1 besides it having no presence when you are spectral so you walk as normal under it.
Crazy how good the voice acting is in Soul Reaver 1 and 2. It's better than a lot of modern games even and the overly dramatic inflection everyone uses does wonders for the game's atmosphere.

But that's the thing: original game was called "Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain." Not the other way around. Then the second game was called "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver." The next two games went by "The Legacy of Kain Series: [Title]." And the fifth game went by "Legacy of Kain: Defiance," only the series title was huge and the game title was tiny, so the visual emphasis/marketing was all skewed. And "Nosgoth" was never even series-titled, even though it IS part of the LoK series. So yes, if you knew the series well, then you were aware what the actual distinction was, but from a casual consumer perspective, Eidos never really formalized the naming scheme, and so it could be annoyingly confusing for outsiders and newcomers. They just couldn't friggin' settle. *chuckle*
I NEED Amy Hennig to be involved. I don't think it'd be the same without her touch on the writing front. With all the deleted Soul Reaver stuff being discovered lately, you could remake SR1 and include all the stuff that was cut. Turel, the smokestack, Priestess, etc.
I could watch this series characters talking with each other for hours long... It's weird but also cool how the dialogues and the lore are so dense and entertaining.
This game is literally my favorite game of all time. The gameplay could use tons of polish, but goddamn that story, voice acting, and even the character model animation/dubbing is fantastic. And the puzzles were much better than the first one. Also, this is random, but the swimming controls were the absolute best I've ever experienced to this day.
@@ColorMeDoubleZ Truthfully, I like Defiance's combat the least. There's some really good ideas there but its too shallow. I think each game just needed to flesh the fighting mechanics out more. I'd say both Blood Omen games had the most fleshed out and polished fighting mechanics followed by the original Soul Reaver. * My ideal system would be something that combines Blood Omen 1's magic with the SR2/BO2 style adventure combat. I'd just flesh out the animations and maybe add more complex grapples and additional weapons.

The others to me just felt awkward in ways defiance didnt I suppose? Only in terms of action, perhaps I played too much dmc and ninja gaiden back then. But yeah I totally get you, blood omen deffs had me actively thinking the most.

I like how you can easily use TK in the middle of combat and how the reaver upgrades are all on the d-pad. I think they actually beat Devil May Cry to doing that. I just think there needs to be more technique and enemy variety like in DMC and NG or just more creative combos with TK. But even so, I'd prefer the action adventure type combat in this series to hack n' slash. I think Darksiders does the closest thing to what I'd like to see.

They were going to make a new one called Dead Sun. But having seen some of the gameplay, as much as I'd love another Kain game or in the world of Nosgoth the dialog replaced nuance with swear words.
@@paladinepaladine There was Dark Prophecy first which was a continuation from Defiance (we'd play as both old and young Kain) but that got canned, then Dead Sun was another attempt but again was canned but the Multiplayer was reworked into Nosgoth which was poorly received.
Or maybe make the games actually playable on steam? Seriously, I bought every LoK game available on steam and only Defiance barely works. The rest just won't load up at all.

For combat, pikes and the Soul Reaver are really the only way to go. Swords are only good if you run around poking the enemy like someone's hyperactive younger brother.
Blood Omen 1: solid first entry in the series, with it's unique top-down perspective, still think that it holds up today(obviously great story and voice acting as with the entire series) Sour Reaver 1: very good game, great intro to the second main protagonist. Blood Omen 2: probably the worst in the main series gameplay-wise (and the story is kinda average) but still worth a playthrough. (Kain is still Kain) Soul Reaver 2: arguably the best one. Defiance: solid finale to the series. get to play as both main characters is a huge bonus.
blood omen 2 would be the worst in the series if it wasn't for realization that I had when i finish and/or replay the game: the aestethic of the hylden in this game makes them almost extraterrestrial than demonic, like they came from outer space which make me want shout to the high heavens: VAMPIRES VS ALIENS!!! really stupid concept but I would like to see a movie or comic about that
I lowkey think that Blood Omen 2 is one of the better games in the series from a gameplay perspective. It just doesn't seem to fit in very well with its artstyle and aesthetic. Gameplay-wise it's extremely similar to Soul Reaver 2 and in some respects better. It's not as smooth, I would even call it clunky but I enjoy the combat, exploration, and powers more in BO2. My personal ranking is: 1. Soul Reaver 2 2. Blood Omen 3. Soul Reaver 4. Blood Omen 2 5. Defiance (used to be my 2nd fav) Gameplay-wise I'd rank them: 1. Blood Omen 2. Blood Omen 2/Soul Reaver 3. While it’s definitely not as good as Soul Reaver 1, there’s some cool stuff in this one as far as the story is concerned. The way this one ends has stuck with me.
I remember having a messed up copy of the game, so @5:52 my game would always loop so it was just "When, might be when, might be when, might be when...".
The story of those games are amazing but in order to fully comprehend it and enjoy it, you pretty much have to play every single game in release order, starting with Blood Omen 1 and ending with Defiance (except for Blood Omen 2 which can be skipped; that one is more of a side story from the main plot of the series and doesn't have much impact story-wise). However the main problem is that the gameplay across all of the games is a mixed bag, mostly because the combat is too simple and repetetive, however exploration and the puzzle solving sections are good and the superb voice acting and story is what drives you forward. Still, those games don't offer the best gameplay experience and should Square Enix decide to do something with the franchise again then they should definetly REMAKE this series and NOT REMASTER it. The story can be kept the same, it is the strenght and greatest aspect of the series however the gameplay needs a complete overhaul and that's why a REMAKE is what those games need.
The thing Kain is trying to explain at the Pillars is that he's trying to find a way to save the pillars and restore balance without also having to die.

When I was 12 year old I rented this game with no prior knowledge of the series. I didn't understand anything that was going on, but I knew it was fucking radical. Great series.
I want a new co-op kain/raziel game in an open world nosgoth. Perhaps keep the spectral realm shifting, could work well in a huge map, finish the original story and give these two a proper conclusion. Please.
I'm probably not going to say much more than a lot of fans have, but yes, you should definitely finish not just this game, but the whole series. This game in particular has some major plot developments and the ending of this is actually really incredible. I really wish they would do a remake of the game, but with the voice actors of the Elder God and Raziel passing, leaving only the voice of Kain (same voice actor of Danik (sp?) in Dead Space 3) being the last surviving actor, I can't imagine who they would have replace the cast. Definitely recommend a Wha Happun? and you're sure to find this out, but I think it was Square by that point had they had worked on a new open world style Legacy of Kain game I think for the PS3 generation that had some actual gameplay videos out there that unfortunately got scrapped for some reason.

Same. Extermination was an interesting game to me. Not great, but I liked it. Its kinda like The Thing, Area 51 and a dash of Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis.
I really liked both the Soul Reaver games but the thing I remember most about the sequel was that there were multiple game breaking bugs in it. I encountered one on my way to the first dungeon that had to do with running into too many birds? If you made too many birds do their animation on the way to the dungeon you cant actually get it out after you finish.
If I were you I would skip playing Blood Omen 2. The whole point of its story was to introduce the enemy race in those murals you see in that chamber under the Pillars. But it's your call, I'll still watch it.
I love SR2 so much I don't mind the combat system. A little tip: when you traverse through Nosgoth, you can run past the enemies without a fight. This is something you can do most of the time, atleast till mid/late game.

The PC version of All the Legacy of Kain games work, but most of them need a Voodoo emulator to make them play right, as only Defiance was around when the normal concept of Graphics Cards had taken root. I actually have a VooDoo emulator guide for SR2 on Steam. Making them play on PC is how I got my playthroughs done. And yes, if anything the story is why you play all the Legacy of Kain games. The game play at times is flawed, but never horrible. That is until Defiance which I feel had the best polish done to the game play in the franchise.

Since you said you wouldn't have the time to do a full-on LP of any of the Legacy Of Kain games in their entirety, Matt, I'd personally say maybe do a 2nd video on this. Then, if there's ever still enough demand, do one-offs for Blood Omen 2 (Or as I like to call it, Kain's Mid-Life Crisis) and Defiance. You COULD go all the way back to Blood Omen 1, but don't force yourself to if you can't handle the jank of the gameplay (though the movement itself is fine). Still, thanks again for giving your attention to what you have of this series thus far!
Exciting both that you're only just discovering the series for yourself (honestly a bit jealous,) and that you're planning a project around it. There's a ton of production history to dig into so I'm sure you'll have a time of it.
At first, immersion in water in Soul Reaver 1 dissolved Raziel's physical body, forcing him to return to the spectral realm. This ended when Raziel defeated...Rahab, I think, and Raziel consumed his soul which allowed him to swim in the material realm. But in the spectral realm, water has neither heft nor lift, and stands as thin as air. Too bad you can't fight while in water, 'cause Rahab's vampires can, and it was frustrating to explore certain underwater areas with them swimming around and biting you. Anyways, the combat system for Soul Reaver 2 is pretty crap, and it's wise to just run around and jump over enemies that you don't need to kill in order to progress. Soul Reaver 2 is much more often played for its story than its gameplay.
I would absolutely love to see you do a full playthrough of this game, but with no subtitles, I don't think that would be so good. You'd need to do some creative sound balancing for it.
Honestly, this series had probably some of the very best voice acting of it's era. That might not be saying much since voice work in games back then was typically unimaginably terrible but still...
While irrelevant to you, the spanish dub of this game (a rare treat in those times) was outstanding as well. And it was the reason I loved this games so much back in the day, when all english sounded like gibberish.

The first time I played this I ran into a bug where because I had disturbed all of the crows I came across, for some reason a door would not open and I had to restart the game since I hadn't been saving.

I been replaying this series lately and I have a couple of things to say: -the combat is very shitty, at the beginning its not that bad, the enemies are slow enough to understand the basics of the mecanics but it doesn't teach you enough, making the oponents of the second and third parts a pain in the ass to deal with since they attack relentlessly, grab and toss you and their blocking is unpenetrable (unlike yours), and something tells me that the developers knew this so they make the soul reaver the strongest weapon, oneshooting all enemies at half horny gauge, making the rest of the weapons (except the last one) useless and the only downside is a screeching sound the reaver makes (raziel claims that at maximum horny the sword starts sucking your health but you lose energy either way, so why bother). -to play this game on pc with gamepad you have to set the executable to windows 95 compatiblity and running both that and xpadder/joytokey in admin. -if you are going to play LoK series start with blood omen 1 since the entire franchise revolves around that, the pc version is abandonware so you have to pirate it but there is a mod to play it on modern systems call verok's patch, its easy to install, you shouldn't have problems installing it. -a wha happun on soul reaver 1 (alledgely it has a fuck ton of cut content) and defiance which it has a incomplete ending, I dont recommend doing one on dead sun (it was going to be a DmC-Style reboot, "fuck you vampire" doesn't have the same strenght as "toss it like the excrement of a boot").
Maybe I'm crazy here. But, anybody else feels like legacy of kain would be a good fit IP for fromsoftware? I mean, It is a different thing I know, but I can´t stop feeling like their sensibilities could do wonders with this.
RE Sould Reaver 2 on PC. There is 1 single file that they do not give you - to get it to to run you just need to download the missing file from a Nosgoth fan site and put it in the correct location in the game golder. The Steam release runs fine IF you do this however - why they sell a version missing one single KEY file that actually makes it run.... Wow.

Raziel's VA actually did voice several Smurfs.
He also did a bunch of voices in Ratchet and Clank, even voicing the major antagonist in Deadlocked.

While it’s definitely not as good as Soul Reaver 1, there’s some cool stuff in this one as far as the story is concerned. The way this one ends has stuck with me.

I remember having a messed up copy of the game, so @5:52 my game would always loop so it was just "When, might be when, might be when, might be when...".
The story of those games are amazing but in order to fully comprehend it and enjoy it, you pretty much have to play every single game in release order, starting with Blood Omen 1 and ending with Defiance (except for Blood Omen 2 which can be skipped; that one is more of a side story from the main plot of the series and doesn't have much impact story-wise).
However the main problem is that the gameplay across all of the games is a mixed bag, mostly because the combat is too simple and repetetive, however exploration and the puzzle solving sections are good and the superb voice acting and story is what drives you forward.
Still, those games don't offer the best gameplay experience and should Square Enix decide to do something with the franchise again then they should definetly REMAKE this series and NOT REMASTER it.
The story can be kept the same, it is the strenght and greatest aspect of the series however the gameplay needs a complete overhaul and that's why a REMAKE is what those games need.
The thing Kain is trying to explain at the Pillars is that he's trying to find a way to save the pillars and restore balance without also having to die.

Btw if you need inspiration for a Wha Happun then I definitely recommend looking into the game Nesgoth which was supposed to be a CSGO style shooter set in this universe involving a war between the Seraphan and vampires

When I was 12 year old I rented this game with no prior knowledge of the series. I didn't understand anything that was going on, but I knew it was fucking radical. Great series.
I want a new co-op kain/raziel game in an open world nosgoth. Perhaps keep the spectral realm shifting, could work well in a huge map, finish the original story and give these two a proper conclusion. Please.
I'm probably not going to say much more than a lot of fans have, but yes, you should definitely finish not just this game, but the whole series. This game in particular has some major plot developments and the ending of this is actually really incredible. I really wish they would do a remake of the game, but with the voice actors of the Elder God and Raziel passing, leaving only the voice of Kain (same voice actor of Danik (sp?) in Dead Space 3) being the last surviving actor, I can't imagine who they would have replace the cast. Definitely recommend a Wha Happun? and you're sure to find this out, but I think it was Square by that point had they had worked on a new open world style Legacy of Kain game I think for the PS3 generation that had some actual gameplay videos out there that unfortunately got scrapped for some reason.
Michael bell is still alive, in fact he did an interview about the character a few years back. We only have our two bois left. They have to make one more at least as a send off for these two brilliant characters, preferably with the voices that birthed them.

Same. Extermination was an interesting game to me. Not great, but I liked it.
Its kinda like The Thing, Area 51 and a dash of Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis.
Extermination, despite not being worth much, still interested me on a concept alone. I really liked the infection mechanic.
I really liked both the Soul Reaver games but the thing I remember most about the sequel was that there were multiple game breaking bugs in it. I encountered one on my way to the first dungeon that had to do with running into too many birds? If you made too many birds do their animation on the way to the dungeon you cant actually get it out after you finish.

If I were you I would skip playing Blood Omen 2. The whole point of its story was to introduce the enemy race in those murals you see in that chamber under the Pillars. But it's your call, I'll still watch it.

I love SR2 so much I don't mind the combat system.
A little tip: when you traverse through Nosgoth, you can run past the enemies without a fight. This is something you can do most of the time, atleast till mid/late game.

The PC version of All the Legacy of Kain games work, but most of them need a Voodoo emulator to make them play right, as only Defiance was around when the normal concept of Graphics Cards had taken root. I actually have a VooDoo emulator guide for SR2 on Steam. Making them play on PC is how I got my playthroughs done. And yes, if anything the story is why you play all the Legacy of Kain games. The game play at times is flawed, but never horrible. That is until Defiance which I feel had the best polish done to the game play in the franchise.
This felt more like the street fighter watch-along than i was expecting. Man there's a lot of cutscenes in this, at least they're well written.

While the texture detail could use a little work, it's true, this WAS the PS2 era, so it's forgivable.
As for being too big? Uh . . . it's the Sarafan Stronghold. They're a religious order of vampire-hunting knights. And . . . that's how religious orders built stuff in the Middle Ages. Gothic architecture was stupid oversized.

Since you said you wouldn't have the time to do a full-on LP of any of the Legacy Of Kain games in their entirety, Matt, I'd personally say maybe do a 2nd video on this. Then, if there's ever still enough demand, do one-offs for Blood Omen 2 (Or as I like to call it, Kain's Mid-Life Crisis) and Defiance. You COULD go all the way back to Blood Omen 1, but don't force yourself to if you can't handle the jank of the gameplay (though the movement itself is fine). Still, thanks again for giving your attention to what you have of this series thus far!
Exciting both that you're only just discovering the series for yourself (honestly a bit jealous,) and that you're planning a project around it. There's a ton of production history to dig into so I'm sure you'll have a time of it.
At first, immersion in water in Soul Reaver 1 dissolved Raziel's physical body, forcing him to return to the spectral realm. This ended when Raziel defeated...Rahab, I think, and Raziel consumed his soul which allowed him to swim in the material realm. But in the spectral realm, water has neither heft nor lift, and stands as thin as air. Too bad you can't fight while in water, 'cause Rahab's vampires can, and it was frustrating to explore certain underwater areas with them swimming around and biting you. Anyways, the combat system for Soul Reaver 2 is pretty crap, and it's wise to just run around and jump over enemies that you don't need to kill in order to progress. Soul Reaver 2 is much more often played for its story than its gameplay.
I would absolutely love to see you do a full playthrough of this game, but with no subtitles, I don't think that would be so good. You'd need to do some creative sound balancing for it.
In honestly for late 90s video games, this voice acting isn’t half bad.
Honestly, this series had probably some of the very best voice acting of it's era. That might not be saying much since voice work in games back then was typically unimaginably terrible but still...

While irrelevant to you, the spanish dub of this game (a rare treat in those times) was outstanding as well.
And it was the reason I loved this games so much back in the day, when all english sounded like gibberish.

Buddy, no offense, but the game volume is like 3/10 and your mic is like 8/10, it makes the cinematics and dialogue really difficult to hear.

The first time I played this I ran into a bug where because I had disturbed all of the crows I came across, for some reason a door would not open and I had to restart the game since I hadn't been saving.

I been replaying this series lately and I have a couple of things to say:
-the combat is very shitty, at the beginning its not that bad, the enemies are slow enough to understand the basics of the mecanics but it doesn't teach you enough, making the oponents of the second and third parts a pain in the ass to deal with since they attack relentlessly, grab and toss you and their blocking is unpenetrable (unlike yours), and something tells me that the developers knew this so they make the soul reaver the strongest weapon, oneshooting all enemies at half horny gauge, making the rest of the weapons (except the last one) useless and the only downside is a screeching sound the reaver makes (raziel claims that at maximum horny the sword starts sucking your health but you lose energy either way, so why bother).
-to play this game on pc with gamepad you have to set the executable to windows 95 compatiblity and running both that and xpadder/joytokey in admin.
-if you are going to play LoK series start with blood omen 1 since the entire franchise revolves around that, the pc version is abandonware so you have to pirate it but there is a mod to play it on modern systems call verok's patch, its easy to install, you shouldn't have problems installing it.
-a wha happun on soul reaver 1 (alledgely it has a fuck ton of cut content) and defiance which it has a incomplete ending, I dont recommend doing one on dead sun (it was going to be a DmC-Style reboot, "fuck you vampire" doesn't have the same strenght as "toss it like the excrement of a boot").

There is 1 single file that they do not give you - to get it to to run you just need to download the missing file from a Nosgoth fan site and put it in the correct location in the game golder.
The Steam release runs fine IF you do this however - why they sell a version missing one single KEY file that actually makes it run.... Wow.
