    the answer is never
to be slightly more realistic, make games for it regularly until they stop producing units for it, then gradually slow down the amount of titles coming out for it
for example, the original xbox only saw 1 game in 2008 and 6 in 2007, but unit production ended in 2009 and its live services shut down in 2010. ergo, its last title realisticly should come out in 2011-12.

    • @Mickelraven
      @Mickelraven 8 месяцев назад +12

Agreed. And another reason why I think current game consoles shouldn't die for a long time, is because graphical upgrades are no longer noticeable. I remember when the PS3 came out, and it looked a whole lot better than the PS2 could've ever imagined. When the PS4 came out, it only looked a little better than the PS3, but the graphical upgrade was still noticeable among some games. Like NHL 15 on the PS4 looks way prettier than NHL 14 on the PS3, and I think it still looks really damn good to this day. But when the PS5 came out, what's the upgrade? Sure I and most gamers know what they are, but I think most average consumers don't. Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5 looks pretty damn photorealistic, but so did Gran Turismo Sport on the PS4 that came out a few years earlier. These two games look very similar to each other, despite the former coming out 5 years after the latter, and on a whole new console generation. And even sports titles look the same across generations. I seriously can't tell the difference between NHL 22 on the PS4 to NHL 22 on the PS5, unless I get a side-by-side comparison to spot the few micro details that are present on the PS5 version, but not on the PS4 version. The graphical jump between console generations are no longer impressive, because games these days look too good. There's not much to improve upon. So if a PS6 came out, what's even the point to buy if the graphics look the same as the PS5? At this point, the only reason why I see a PS6 existing in a few years is because of corporate greed.

@@Mickelraven true! but just for funsies i dont believe older systems shouldve stopped either, it was a fun time during the noughties/early 10s where games would have notably different graphics on all the systems it came out on

    • @Mickelraven
      @Mickelraven 8 месяцев назад +5

@@Spacething7474 That's also true. In a "what if" reality, I've always wanted old consoles to last longer, kinda like video formats like VHS, DVD and Blu-ray, which have lasted for decades. Even though physical media is dying, I can still find some DVDs in a retail store, even though they aren't as common as they were a few years ago. But it would be fun to see a brand new PS2 game on store shelves.
And not to mention, because Nintendo have been very gimmicky with their consoles since the DS and Wii, I kinda see these gimmick consoles as their own thing and should be supported to this day, because they're unique. If I want new dual screen games, it goes on the DS or 3DS. If I want new motion control games, it goes on the Wii (or Wii U if people care about it). I think there's a pretty good reason why Just Dance games just kept coming on the Wii, way past its discontinuation. Because the Wii was common in a lot of people's homes, and people kept buying Just Dance games. And from what I've heard, Wiis are common in retirement homes, since old folks are still competing on Wii Sports. In my humble opinion, the Wii should be eternal! Even though its composite video output is outdated, and in fact was outdated when it came out in 2006. I believe launch PS3's had HDMI. I think the Wii should've gotten an HDMI version.

Companies will reach a point where everybody who wants their console already owns one. They run out of people to sell consoles to which is the main reason why theyll make a new one. Also i think the switch is really on its last legs here as recent games like xeno 3 and totk really pushed the switch to its limit. If a new Nintendo console were to come out now it would *FLOP* because people would never want leave behind the Switch’s massive library for no trade-off. Same thing with the Wii, it sold really well and nintendo still followed up with a new console after 6 years. I think as long as nintendo's new console is backwards compatible with the switch, and it has a good lineup of game at launch then then nintendo will have nothing to really worry about.

The reason we see upgrades from Sony and Microsoft is because they're directly competing. Nintendo doesn't need to upgrade as they're not directly competing against. Yeah they make games but their games are targeted differently and they focus on different things. Sony and Microsoft are Coke and Pepsi while Nintendo is Root Beer. Nintendo can do their own thing which is great. Additionally, I feel they might hold on to the switch for a while as the Wii U failed so badly. The Switch has a lot of ports or soft sequels where they essentially re released a wii u game with some changes.

They ran the OG Gameboy model into the fucking DUST, damn near 10 years until the Color came out, all based on being affordable and having good games alone. This is just my opinion, but I feel Microsoft and Sony, because they’re already massive tech companies, aren’t able to get away with dragging out a console’s life as much because of their reputation of always striving for graphical fidelity and cinematic gameplay. Yes, Nintendo gets shit because their consoles are underpowered, but because they’re known for fun and affordability (comparatively to Sony and XBOX) I do believe they could get away with running the switch through a full decade.

The reason why the Atari 5200 flopped and the Atari 2600 lived on was because the idea that "consumers should replace consoles every so years" alienated consumers. Limitations breed creativity
Nintendo thrives in limitations it allows for more creativity
Sometimes too much freedom means no direction
But within a limitation you can challenge yourself how to be flexible within it like a fun puzzle you experiment with
STOP GIVING A DAMN ABOUT GRAPHICS
IF YOU WANT GOOD GRAPHICS WITH REALISTIC TEXTURES GO OUTSIDE AND HUG A TREE
NINTENDO WAS SMART AND REALIZED WHAT EVERYONE ELSE
      IS TOO SLOW TO
Nintendo realised long ago that competing in graphics is pointless. No matter how powerful your console is, in a couple of years it is going to be obsolete, and anybody who really cares about graphics is going to buy a PC, because that is where the best graphics are.
Instead, Nintendo focuses on their strengths:
      * Nintendo likes hardware gimmicks, because it makes their console stand out. Nobody bought a Wii because it had the prettiest graphics, they bought a Wii because they wanted to play with the motion controls (An idea so good both the “superior” PS3 and Xbox 360 tried to copy it). The same thing is happening with the Switch: people are buying it because they can play their games anywhere, and can move between a handheld and a home console. They like to focus on giving customers something that they cannot get anywhere else.
      * When Nintendo did try to compete on power, they didn’t do very well. The N64 and Gamecube were the most powerful consoles of their generations, but were both massively outsold by the “inferior” PS1 and PS2. The Wii was the weakest of its generation, but outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360. This proves Nintendo’s approach to console design clearly has something going for it.
      * Performance is expensive. Performance is even more expensive when you are using it in niche applications. If Nintendo wanted to have something as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4, while still being portable, then it would probably cost twice as much. This means that Nintendo would have to charge more for the console (probably not something the market could sustain) and/or eat a hefty loss on each console sold. Instead, by not focusing on performance, Nintendo make a profit on each console, and keep it at a price point where more people can afford it.
      * One of Nintendo’s biggest strengths is their first party titles, all of which rely on stylised graphics and strong art-style. It doesn’t matter that the console is not very powerful when Pokémon, Zelda, Mario (and its millions of spin offs), Smash Bros, Metroid and Donkey Kong are incredibly popular and all don’t care about high end graphics. Why make your console more expensive to make and develop for when you don’t even need it?
      * The companies that tend to focus on graphics are third party developers, such as EA, Activision, and Rockstar. If the console sells well (like the Switch currently is), then those developers will find a way to bring their games to it or, failing that, make unique games that work best on the hardware.
      * By not competing with the other consoles, or PCs, in terms of power, while offering unique gaming experiences, Nintendo has comfortably found a niche as an optional second system. If you have a PC, PS4 or Xbox One you have very little reason to buy one of the others, because they are all basically the same. Nintendo’s consoles offer things that none of the others offer, and thus can easily tempt people with another gaming device into purchasing it.
      * Nintendo has also found a strong market in all ages These people don’t care about graphics, so why waste money on giving them something that they don’t want? An families don’t care that the Switch doesn’t have the best looking games, they’re just happy that they can have fun
Ever since the Wii era Nintendo has. Been trying to train us that power doesn’t matter
Whimsy and imagination and creativity and memorable experiences are more important to them
And y’all still aren’t getting it
      Move on from Power
      it don’t matter
      Nintendo doesn’t want it
      They think it’s boring
      They don’t care
Official quote from iwata: "Even when we were going to launch the Wii system, there were a lot of voice saying 'Nintendo should stop making hardware'," Iwata recalled, talking to Gamasutra.
"The reasoning behind that was Nintendo would not have any chance against Microsoft and Sony. The fact of the matter was: I did not think Nintendo should compete against these companies with the same message and same entertainment options for people.
"We have not changed our strategy," he added. "In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]."
The switch is faithful to iwata’s legacy

Well, it has been said that since the N64 era that Nintendo does survive on their own software as opposed to relying in third-party compared to PlayStation and Xbox. Now, the N64, GameCube and Wii had some good to great third-party support and Nintendo handheld from the past had even better third-party support, but the Switch, being a hybrid system, has had a bit of a problem. Being a hybrid home/handheld system that has game in HD that was a direct successor to Nintendo's second biggest failure, most third-parties haven't developed games that take advantage of the Switch's hardware limitations, save for some things like Monster Hunter: Rise, Shin Megami Tensei V, Momotaro Dentetsu, Dragon Quest Monsters 3, among others. But considering how many units the Switch has sold has convinced some developers that there's a potential market for their games for people that only have a Switch as their main console, that why we have seen so many late ports of games that have never been on Nintendo consoles before, though some companies like WB. have attempted to make some of their current gen games like Mortal Kombat and Hogwart's Legacy run on the Switch despite all the setbacks, because they think there's a potential market
I predict that there'll be plenty of ports of games from the PS4/PS4 gen on Nintendo's next console

There 2 ways to depict how Nintendo could've alternatively had a newer console by now:
1: if only the Wii U had succeeded, the next Nintendo Console would've released maybe in 2019, being even more powerful and graphically better than the Switch, likely due to the fact that it probably wouldn't be a hybrid system (rather a pure TV Console) and that it would have an additional 2 years of development time, without rushing to fix the actual Wii U situation that hypothetically wouldn't have existed.
2: We got the Switch in Q4-2012 instead of the Wii U, and with 4 earlier years of that system's chronology, the well-sales would probably wrap up in 2020 rather than 2024, and as such, it would be able to keep up with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, in terms of having enough similarities between their hardware in order to share some third-party games in-common without having to make either laggy Switch games for having better graphics than usual Switch games (such as SpongeBob BFBB Rehydrated), or worse graphics than usual for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, or just straight out making 2 different versions of that game so that it could fit the right hardwares for both NintendoSwitch and PlayStation5/XboxSeriesX.

And it’s still plenty powerful imo, you just need to optimize it well, just study how older 3D games work, specially their optimizations, and you’ll be impressed on what you can achieve on a switch!!

You’re making an assumption that Switch can’t be used as a primary system with another assumption that all players prefe to play Elden Ring etc. but many players prefer to not play like that. I know lots of people who prefer Switch’s slate of bright, colorful games with Nintendo IPs. It’s these people who can easily use Switch is their primary console. I am one of those people. Elden Ring holds no appeal to me.

I would also like to bring up that a console also dies when it becomes easily exploited. The Switch already has heaps of emulators come out that are getting more powerful each year, and I think that making a new console, upgrading security, would cause a lot more of an incentive for people to buy if it's the only way to play those games. Since it becomes easier to hack the older it becomes.

I'm really sorry man but did you see how the new zelda came out? Don't get me wrong it's an amazing game and I played like 200 hours or so, but DAMN those frames dropped. If nintendo wants to make more games like totk or botw they NEED more power. Also, 3rd party games (in most cases) don't have as many resouces as nintendo to optimize stuff. So their games end up looking and feeling WAY worse than in any other platform. All I'm trying to say is that if I (and many more people) have more fun emulating your games (that I own) rather than playing them on the console they're meant to be played, there's something wrong with it.

The span between the Wii and WiiU was 6 Years. They waited with the WiiU until the sales of Wii games were dwindling. The Wii had much weaker hardware than the competition and it showed in the long run, while the "gimmick" was nothing relevant anymore. So no one was excited to have a kind of "Wii HD", the Wii was dead. In summary: You need to still be relevant in the gaming market when your new console drops, you need to keep up with the competition to get 3rd party games. The Switch is only PS3/360 Era strong. Nintendo desperatly needs to bring a successor now or they will face the same problems again.

  • @AllieRX

Game consoles also die because stores like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and GameStop have a limited amount of space to sell game consoles, so when the new console is released, they won't have enough room to sell games for the old console as well as the new console. So the old console has to go at some point. You never see stores sell an NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U and Switch at the same time (outside of some mom 'n pop retro gaming shops).
Also, Nintendo needs a Switch successor. A lot of their own games struggle in performance, not just third-party. There's a lot of shimmering and blurriness in their bigger, more demanding Switch games like the Zelda games and Xenoblade. TOTK looks rough, especially in handheld mode.

    The pioneers should not die.
The company should create. A store in their website and give tools and support for devs who want to make games or pitch games to them, to sell on their website .
And a little help in advertising.
When a system has peaked is when the devs can’t or don’t want to squeeze more juice or it just doesn’t wow no more. When you see something newer and shinyer
    You gravitate to that.
But I feel the consoles die just when the less skilled or financially strong devs and companies can actually get good results out of a system because of all the work the top devs has done and showed the tricks over the years.
It’s not fair to end the console .
For me we are still supposed to be on ps3, there are so many ip’s that could have made a come back and devs that could have made great games and ip’s because they now are able with the resources .!

The problem is that, because of the time it takes to develop the hardware, the launch games, the marketing and the release strategy, the decision to release a console needs to be made years in advance. Nintendo is probably as surprised as we are that all things Switch are still selling like they are and couldn't afford to assume that when they pulled the trigger.

I do wish Nintendo would release a Switch Pro, purely because it feels like so many ported games have to make sacrifices, and not even the big triple A titles with great graphics, things like Wobbledogs, Minecraft, Bugsnax, and really every game on the Switch
I dont need a console that can produce the same graphical prowess as playing the new Spider Man on my PS5, but I would like something that could play the current third part & indie games without any lag, slowdown, or render distance issues, and a bigger onboard storage would be great too.
and I think EVERYONE would love being able to play the games they bought for the Switch natively on Switch Pro, especially if any devs make enhancements for players on the Pro, like they did with the New 3DS, and also the fact that Nintendo has been HORRENDOUS with bridging the gap between console generations, it could really win over their current userbase

The simplest answer is when it dies of natural causes. The N64, GameCube, and Wii U had shorter lives (especially the Wii U) because the public had stopped being interested in them. None were nearly as successful as the NES, SNES, and Wii, which all lasted longer. It's a cycle, momentum, thingy. Gamers buy the consoles giving an installed user base. Seeing that, companies make software to sell to the users. Gamers want games, so buy the system that the games are on, making the systems popular, and popular systems attract software companies.
It's when the cycle winds down that a new system needs to come out. For the Switch, it could be a long time. People still are buying them, and games are still coming out. When gamers stop buying games for the Switch, and when companies stop making games, then it will be time for a new system.

You always end up saying exactly what I'm thinking. I know people point to the timeline, as though it's written in stone or law. But they're missing the real reason. Why was there only 4 years between the WiiU and Switch? Because WiiU sales were garbage (even though I love the system). Why did the WiiU launch 6 years after wii? Because, while the wii started off hot, it slowed to a crawl, barely inching over the 100 million mark (the Switch has already blown way past that and is closing in on the DS, which is their best console yet and only a million or two behind all time best-seller PS2) Why 5 years between Cube and Wii? Because Cube sales lagged near the end.
That's when you should be looking for an upgrade, when things slow down. not just on the hardware but also on the software. Sure, Pokemon games had some performance issues, as did Tears (way less in the case of Tears though, showing that Nintendo does give their games TLC because their business is games, whereas the Pokemon Company has an entire empire of stuff and games are just a part of it), but both games are huge sellers. 20 mil. That puts it not just at the top of the Switch best sellers ever, but also in the history of those franchises.
If people are still satisfied with what they're getting on the Switch, why release a new system to compete? The whole point of all this is to make money. That's why we get new stuff. New consoles offer new experience upon which we can make more money. If you're already making a ton of money, there's no need for something else. Something else risks dividing and confusing your customer base. Remember how many people thought the WiiU was just a tablet you used for the wii? I do. I worked retail holiday of 2012, lots of parents assumed so and they soon returned those WiiU games and just grabbed the wii version instead. If you're older, like me, you remember the extra hardware add-ons Sega released, hoping to extend the life of the Genesis. Didn't really work and Sega ended up burning bridges with fans who were loyal and bought the new add-ons only to be abandoned. If Sega went from Genesis to Saturn to Dreamcast, they'd most likely still be in the console game today. Nintendo is doing great with the switch, double-y so because they have one foot in the handheld market and one foot in the console market and dominating both. That's not easy. PSP and Vita tried to do that and only one of those was a bit of a success.
