    I want to mention something else regarding Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix. Back in the day, for OG Fat PS2 console models, Sony made an add-on called the PS2 Hard Disk Drive that can connect to the internet and download data that can be installed onto PS2 games. Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix was one of the few compatible games. The Install Data reduced load times for the game, and that’s it. It was a bit redundant because if you turned off your console and rebooted it up, the install data would be lost even if you saved your game. So each time, you had to go through this process only to reduce load times.

      The most advanced use of the HDD as a game updating tool was probably the SOCOM II Addon Map Pack that you could download off of a certain OPM demo disc and then play with others who had also downloaded it. Kind of funny that you could update your game without the internet, but needed the internet to play the downloaded map

    The skipping cutscene feature was added to the HD 1.5 remix version of the game(which also adds 2 new abilities & remixed music), the PS2 version of Final Mix allows to skip cutscenes only after watching them once(so after you die to a boss & re enter the boss area, two options appear on screen to either skip or re-watch)

  • @amirgarcia547
    @amirgarcia547 4 месяца назад +38

    We basically had to buy the same game twice, that’s how. Though with Kingdom Hearts, we wouldn’t get any of the final mix releases until the 1.5 and 2.5 HD remasters, and so those of us who grew up with the series on the PS2 were essentially playing them for the first time. Which’s was extra confusing for younger me due to Kingdom Hearts 2 including a cutscene from 1 that was exclusive to the final mix version.

      Yeah, for all the hate DLC gets, it is much better than what we had before. @NicholasStabile Remind was dlc that added some extra story content. And that's exactly my point. They were able to add dlc instead of making us have to buy the entire game again. In the PS2 days, they would added that content in Kingdom Hearts 3 Final Mix instead. And we'd need to pay full price all over again. And in the West, we might not have gotten it at all.

    Back in 2005, there was a rumor that they were going to release a disc/memory card file that added tag matches to Smackdown vs. RAW's online mode... and we believed it.

    • @PhirePhlame
      @PhirePhlame 3 месяца назад +3

      That's not actually that stupid. The PlayStation 2's system firmware can actually load files containing updated versions of itself from the memory card. There's no mechanism to actually flash said updated firmware image onto the ROM chip, but every time the system's switched on, any such file will get loaded into RAM and then run in place of whatever version's on the ROM chip.
      While this is arguably best known for being how FreeMCBoot works, being an unofficial "update" you install to the memory card, it did get some notable official uses too, via install CDs that usually came with a relevant product. These are known as "Utility Discs". For example, the DVD remote came with a CD to update the DVD player to support it. The very first systems manufactured in Japan had to make do without any DVD video support due to deadline limitations, and came packaged with a CD to install the DVD player. The network adapter and hard drive also needed the firmware updated to support them, and funnily enough the hard drive itself can have firmware files booted off of it too!
      This allowed Sony of Japan to eventually go batshit insane and release the BroadBand Navigator, a full-blown replacement for the system menu with all kinds of cutting-edge features! There was a web browser, there were special online menus hosted by various dev studios to provide announcements and even downloadable games & demos, there was MiniDisc support (until it got removed), on top of the audio and especially the visuals being redone compared to the vanilla system menu. It was like the XMB menu, except it came before the XMB menu.

    I feel like one of the biggest ones you should have covered is a staple of Koei's Dynasty Warriors (and subsequently Samurai Warriors) series, where they released an expansion to the entries called Xtreme Legends, which can also act as a game update if you had the original disc as well, tacking on anything that was changed gameplay wise or otherwise added onto the original's stages. Kind of counts more as an expansion, but considering being able to load the original I think it could count as both an update and a DLC.

    Many times when a update did happen you had to buy the game again just to enjoy the update which is crazy. "Super" editions (various names from Super to Ultra to Deluxe, etc. etc.), regional editions that came years apart, "International" versions, and expansion packs. All sold as brand new games. Buy the game again if you want more content!
    And then came the "DLC rage". Those few months where people were actually upset over DLC and especially "on disc DLC", because some data was needed to be stored on disc (just like it is now in the 1.0 versions of the games) in order for early DLC to function. Short lived, but embarrassing as hell since it was just the transitional period.
    Growing up and seeing these things change and evolve really was something. And now we're here, it's so easy to patch-update a game now, and I for one love it. I know some people still haven't gotten through that transitional period, but it actually is way better than buying the same game like 3-4 times to get max content, or being stuck with game breaking bugs that never got patched out.
    Being an old man is actually awesome. I don't let my nostalgia blind me to the point where I'd actually want expansion packs and "super" editions back. If you want more content, just patch it in. It's easy.

    for some reason I like Rev 00 sonic 1 best
    I don't know why
    JP2 is much better, but the little imperfections of Rev 00 just add so much more to it for me..!?
    The revisions after Rev 00 just feel a little too perfect for some reason-almost as if something is off about it..
    But then I realize that I grew up with a Rev 00 cartridge.

    DLC pre-internet was in the form of expansion packs. Think Maxis. Other then that , if you mean bugs and glitches that's not dlc... Those were left in or they kept the game in testing and only released it when it was finished.
    bug patching and dlc not the same
    If you had ideas for your game you finished the game before putting it out or you made a sequel. Only pc games got EPs and patches. Cartridge games were always completed, unmodable, unpatchable, uncoppyable unhackable . Game genie could add stuff so could cheat codes but cartridge unlike CDs had no folders, no menus no way to open and overwrite, add to or delete files. Which is what EPs did.
    PC game patches were often also in magazines

    As someone who grew up in the pre-internet days of gaming, I'm really glad this is a video series you're doing, because I get so tired of hearing "Well, back then every game released complete and didn't need updates and patches" and I'm just like "no... no they did not LOL" because if you wanted a fixed version of the game, you had to go buy it a second time, or you wouldn't even no an updated version was out there, as many game reprints had no packaging differences between versions at all!

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 4 месяца назад +2

      Games *did* go through very thorough testing---mandated by the console manufacturers---to ensure they were released in good shape though.
      If your game was deemed to buggy it could be denied release until it was improved. The process wasn't perfect, but it did have an impact.

    • @HybridAngelZero
      @HybridAngelZero 4 месяца назад +1

      @@todesziege Oh for sure, I'm not denying that, I'm more frustrated with people who say updates etc *never* happened back then. It's a double edged sword, sadly. It's so easy to update games now that they get released as incomplete messes far more often than they used to, but back then, if a game was released messy, you had to buy the game again to get a fixed version

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 4 месяца назад +2

      @@HybridAngelZero If you were lucky you would get a replacement.
      Buggy games were significantly more common on computers, where there wasn't that oversight from platform holders, but at least disks/tapes were cheaper to manufacture so replacements were more likely. And there was still not that "let's patch it on day 1" mentality.
      But yeah, definitely a double-edged sword.

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 3 месяца назад +2

      @@kingstarscream320 Depends on what you mean by "complete". Games will almost always have _some_ planned elements cut, so while maybe not finished to the original spec, games would (unless something went very wrong) at least not be pressed to disc in a state where there were still months of development (or QA) planned to happen.

      Not always true. My original copy of vice city has many glitches that got updated in later releases. Such as anytime you save at the ice cream shop base the game freezes completely and stops working. Potentially corrupting all your save data permanently. Enter the matrix on Xbox has an entire level that crashes for most users making the game impossible to complete without starting a new save and hoping it doesn’t happen again. Prince of persia sands of time and warrior within on ps2 both have save spots that glitch the game and create a endless loop making it unable to be completed

      What? Yes he did, at least in one case he did. If you take anything from this video, sonic 1 rev 1 is and update from rev 0 so with that knowledge everything he mentioned was an update. All because none of them said update anywhere or updated the original disc does not mean they weren't updates to their respective games. Is it the same game but something was fixed? It's an update, just back then they had to rerelease the game for the update to go out.

    I wish RUclips had a filter that allowed you to filter out channels that are made by kids (Gen-Z). Not only is it because I can’t stand hearing “modern takes” on things that have nothing wrong with them, and those people have no authority to judge things they’ll never understand true context for, but because kids make videos about things that I constantly have to say “yeah, duh obviously”. It’s even worse when kids are totally wrong about what they’re talking about (which seems often). Anywho, I remember being the only person I knew that had that standard analog controller for PlayStation. It was such a strange controller, it actually had two modes and I honestly don’t remember the exact difference. I just remember the button between the sticks would turn the light from off to red to green.

    Ocarina of Time is another notable example as it had two revisions. Version 1.0 is the gold cartridge version and it had an oversight where if the player saved and quit during the final boss, when they reload their save they’d be missing the Master Sword. Version 1.1, the first grey cart release, fixed this. Later grey cart versions were version 1.2 which saw more significant changes. The symbol of the gerudo was changed to an more original design that the series would continue using from them on (the original symbol resembled the flag of Turkey). The blood Ganondorf coughs up during his fight was changed from red to green, likely to avoid issues with ratings boards. Most notably the Fire Temple had its music altered to remove a vocal sample Koji Kondo originally got from a sampler CD which feature Muslim chanting, replacing it with the midi vocals used in the Shadow Temple.

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 4 месяца назад

      no, the movie skip mechanic were already there on FM version on PS2 (the american and japanese versions lacked this feature entirely). The issue is that it is only enabled if you already watched the cutscene at least once, so it is possible to still have to see the cutscene multiple times because the game didnt save before a fight 😂
