  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major success for Nintendo, and expectedly, recent rumours suggest the film won’t be Illumination’s only dip into Nintendo’s wide selection of franchises. But which series have the most adaptation-potential in Illumination’s hands? Let’s rank them and find out!

Don't kill me, but I think they could handle Pikmin pretty decently.

Animal Crossing has a slice of life anime movie and the story is actually pretty nice and talks about frienship and finding a porpose. As a western animation? Yeah, maybe it woudn't work, but I could totally see a good and chill narrative coming from this IP in an anime or maybe a comic.

more illumination movies would be fine, but after watching some of DreamWorks recent stuff, I'm convinced they'd be incredible if they had a go at Kid Icarus - a lot of their big franchises are adaptations of fairly obscure kids books so taking on a niche series like kid icarus wouldn't be a massive hurdle and their style would suit the world so well. They're great at writing hilarious yet threatening villains too - imagine their take on Hades.

i think illumination could handle mario

  • @FigmentJedi

But Sing is basically an Animal Crossing movie without the humans already though.

  • @GamingtheOtter

Star Fox would make a fantastic Star Wars rip off and I'd still love it!

  • @TheMasondwich

This is my take, but I think DreamWorks would be Perfect for Splatoon and Kirby.

  • @Pietrothesquid

I don't want Illumination to make a Splatoon movie but DreamWorks would probably be perfect or Splatoon anime would be awesome too

My biggest issue with Illumination doing Mother 3 is that Mother 3 ends with a kid commiting suicide and there is NO way Illumination would be able to handle that

  • @markdpane

I think it's safe to say that Illumination will handle films based on Mario spin-offs, without a doubt. I could see films based on Luigi's Mansion and Donkey Kong Country done by them within the next few years.

The scene: Samus enters a lab full of dead scientists, walls covered in blood.

Arms is actually THE PERFECT Illumination movie, as an arms fan, which are rare, An Arms movie is a very good idea for illumination to make. The game has quirky lovable characters, a pretty basic and easy to tell plot, and if they keep some of the tracks from the game, or remaster it, it will be a chefs kiss!

With how recognizable Kirby is just as an aesthetic, I think that would be easy money for any studio, although we've seen Illumination's track record with no-dialogue characters and it's mortifying.

  • @grandmasteryoda6717

I really hope they make a Donkey Kong spin-off.

  • @2koolkvs418

Sure, I don’t trust Illumination with most of these either, but do you trust DreamWorks to handle the more story driven Nintendo franchises? They made Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, and even Puss in Boots 2, so I do!

  • @jackeroni216

i love the mario movie, but i think part of that is how attatched i am to the franchise. i love mario, i play all the games, but mario has never taken over my life like kirby or splatoon. i think if they fumbled those i would have a mental breakdown in the theater.

  • @HeyItIsMichal

Now I want an F-Zero movie. Illumination probably couldn't handle it, but if the anime and F-Zero GX's story mode are anything to go off of, it could definitely work as a movie handled by another company.

Are you kidding me? Ilumination can handle perfectly rythim heaven, it's goofiness in it's purest form!

  • @joeysumner1856

Given how I think of DreamWorks his movies to be a mixed bag, I probably do think that some of these projects could actually work better under DreamWorks is umbrella rather than illumination's.

  • @thesardonicrenegade3065

I think Illumination would honestly do a pretty good animated Punch Out movie, I don't think live action can really do the characters of Punch Out justice, and Illumination can bring that mix of "serious boxing underdog story" and "what the actual fuck is going on he is teleporting" that you get from Punch Out
