TRX6 Hauler Upgrade & Group Run

- The TRX6 Ultimate Hauler could use some more oomph on the rocks and trails. Like diesel trucks, torque on these heavier rigs is the order of the day. Anyone can slap in a high-powered brushless setup and zoom, but what about enhancing the trail drive and getting more from your battery at the same time? It is possible!
I happened to have a cheap, lower-kv unsensored motor here. Figured I should test it and share how it went with you guys. It's really quite long (74mm - the stock motor is 55mm!). So, should you do it too? Is it worth it?

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed that. We have a family of them that live down the end of the property here. Every few years they have 1 or 2 juveniles flying with them, then they grow up over a year or so and then it's just back to the bonded pair again. Totally awesome birds, these!
I just picked up A TRX6. Huller from a friend. Basically brand new ran one time bunch of upgrades winch on the bed wench on the front all Traxxas. Widening kit. Full light kit. $300 bucks. I had to buy it. But now I want to put a better motor so that’s where your video came about. Thanks for the information. You always have something that helps me. I do love Surpass/Rocket motors, they're great quality for such a low price. I do believe that it all comes down to the ESC when using a sensorless inrunner on a crawler, and Castle seem to know what they're doing. 👍

@@RCTNT you’re right, Craig. I guess the more technical stuff, for me, requires more concentration and patience so I relate it more to “work” even though it’s not. I’ve reached a point in my life where I’ve had enough stress and try to avoid it at all costs. Watching your videos are always enjoyable and never stressful so it’s all good to me.

It's such an incredible place, yeah! Rapid altitude changes can scratch things up a bit, yes!
My local hobby store has this exact 6x6. Every time I go in they keep encouraging me to buy it….made me a very reasonable price for it also..
Just don’t the large areas to crawl with it…the town I live in sits on sand….ya have to build crawler coarse areas for say…we have trails but no natural rocky areas …
Understandable. It's a great truck if you do have trails and want to play with something a bit bigger, it's super fun. Not cheap, but super fun, yeah! Maybe one day :)

I'm using a Surpass Hobby 3650 2300kv motor with 60A esc in my RGT EX86100Pro. £28 and it's been awesome.
Generally run it on 3s for some decent wheel speed but it goes pretty slow and controlled too with the stock 15t pinion. It's no fusion pro, it has no drag brake and the BEC output could be better but so far I've been impressed and it hasn't let me down.

I never know 6x6 are so damned good climbers and be surprised how my cheap Reely Free Men 6x6 (Axial UMG clone with portals) compare too my high modified TRX4 Sport on realy difficult trails like rocky rivers steep inclines usw. now my 6x6 is my favorite Truck for "pushing boundaries" more and more!

That is a beautiful spot to go crawling. I am impressed with the way the truck went up the steep incline easily. May be you have started a new fad for crawling. I wonder if this would work in a truck like a TRX4 or Base Camp?
Thanks! It'd work, but the issue with such a heavy motor in a 4x4 is the greater influence it has on center of gravity. The 6x6 can handle it better, but that said, there's nothing stopping you trying a shorter can. I bet a 3665 1800kv would go great.
@@RCTNT I was looking for cheap brushless systems for another project and I found a Hobbywing system for about ninety U.S. dollars. It's the Hobbywing 38030210. The motor is 36mm in diameter and 60mm in length. So, it may be a little too big.
That's a 3660. I've fitted a 3674. Nothing wrong with that size, as long as the kv is reasonable for the application.
I've been looking at the hauler but I think with the amount and variety of crawlers I have right now it wouldn't get much use

It's a great rig but it doesn't get a lot use here either. Although now with this motor, it probably will!
one thing about looking for cool places to crawl: keeps you limber!!!

BTW: I used to work construction and had an avg of 1 1/2 to 2 hrs one way to job sites. Sometimes made rougher due to white out conditions.

Interesting! Do you suppose cogging would have been more of an issue if the motor was the same physical size but a higher KV, say around 2200KV?
Yep. More kv, more cogging. But 2200 is still pretty safe, especially in 3674 size.

I'm not that familiar with out-runner motors. How do they handle heat? Do they run as hot as inrunners?
No outrunners in this video, but broadly speaking, outrunners deliver more torque and less power than inrunners, though I'm generalising. Inrunners don't run hot at all unless you're working them hard. There's a sweet spot on many rigs where, if you get the right size motor, right voltage and right gearing, you'll have a cool-to-warm running motor that's controllable, easy on the batteries and nicely punchy. It depends on the weight and intended purpose of the machine.
In this video, I've got a motor that's too big, really, for the ultimate hauler. Being longer, it has more torque and a bit less acceleration, given there's more rotational mass to turn when you punch it. The kv is low enough that it'll boogie in 1st or 2nd and it's happy on 2s or 3s, all day long.
But to come back to your question, you'd usually consider an outrunner for a technical or comp crawler. Inrunners are great too, but the outrunners will be lighter weight and full of torque, both of which are good factors in a performance oriented crawler.
