Joey and Paul were the songwriters. Corey was just a lyricist. Jim and Clown wanted to write more but Joey was too stubborn, just writing such technical riffs that even he wouldn't be able to play correctly. There's a podcast interview with the producer Dave Fortman all about this album and era, it should clear up your misconceptions.
I thnk i'd give this about a 7-7.5 too, There was a bit of a mixture again of the more acoustic vs the harder stuff, although with songs like The Cold Black I think sometimes they went on a bit at one level or felt a bit messy and not as focused, but otoh there were others which melded their little sections a bit more together such as Psychosocial and pretty catchy. I thought Gehenna had a bit of that creepy kinda overtone in places going on as well. Vendetta i liked and thought it reminded me of some chanty songs such as Muse- Uprising, or Nickelback's Burn It To The Ground on their Dark Horse album which also came out in 2008. As I mentioned in discord I found a couple mash ups that work well together, that could be a good one I'd reckon. As for my track Ranking, Vermilion remix being there kinda feels to me like bonus track not entirely connected to this album's sessions, sortof like to use Nickelback again the live acoustic version of Someday from their previous being a bonus track on All The Right Reasons. But if it were new never heard before and part of this albumcycle thematically and such I'd maybe rank it higher around 5-6 (top 5 or so kinda interchangeable). mine was a little more closely aligned around the same areas with a couple of yours this time. I'd say top 2-3 again hard to split in different ways.
ALL HOPE IS GONE Ranking (something along lines of this for now) 1. Psychosocial 2. Vendetta 3. Snuff 4. Dead Memories 5. Til We Die 6. Child of Burning Time 7. All Hope Is Gone 8. Sulfur 9. Gehenna 10. Wherein Lies Continue 11. Butcher’s Hook 12. Gematria (The Killing Name) 13. This Cold Black 14. .execute 15. Vermilion Pt 2 Bloodstone Remix (If it was proper never heard it before part of this album maybe it’d be around top 5/6).
