I think that “closest to him and Joey” had a HUGE impact on why IOWA sounds so perfect. No album has that Bassy atmosphere. It’s just so dark it can’t be put into words. But so much bass and the drums are beyond perfect. Joey had to outshine that first record or at least match it. It worked.
I met and interviewed Paul on Slipknot's first tour of Germany back in December of '99 (12.17.1999, Kantine, Cologne). He was such a genuinely kind and friendly person, not at all what I had expected from someone in such a band. He was just so nice to hang out with... such a shame he left us so early.

Your right no comparison but all slipknot albums with Paul even the very first before Corey the bass shines through all the craziness his tone was so heavy yet so smooth even on MFKR album it sounds like a jazz player for real to me
To this day I've never heard one bad word about the late great Paul Gray. The Slipknot that was my favorite band Slipknot died when Paul Gray passed, it was six feet under after Joey's passing. R.I.P. #2 Paul Gray and #1 Joey Jordison

I was misremembering. I stand corrected. I was thinking he was in on the very early stages of V3. My comment is actually from the self titled era. I guess when you hit your 40's your memory starts to slip. Fuck.
I miss the IOWA 9. Wish I could go back to '99. Paul was brilliant, Joey was Brilliant, Jim is still killing it. Paul was humble and kind. Long live the Knot.
It's crazy that out of 9 dudes, only 2-3 wrote most of the music. Now it's just one guy
I met Paul in 2005 backstage and a Slipknot show and I said the exact same thing "The nicest dude I've ever met" it's spot on who he was.
I've only ever heard good things about him! RIP
That’s an amazing story about how Paul called him just before he died. It was almost as though he was sort of ready to go, even though he had a baby on the way. It makes his death even more of a tragedy than we were aware of.
This is why Ross will always be my favorite producer. Not only he can push all musicians to their best, has the most emotional records and etc.. but even how he is talking. With some emotional anvil. He is so grounded, god damn it. I feel the weight of his emotions on all records.
Nearly brought me to tears hearing this, just so tragic. You can just hear in his voice how difficult it was to talk about it, Ross Robinson seems like an awesome guy and on an emotional level you can hear his influence in the albums he produces. RIP Paul Gray

I think one thing that people neglect to recognize or remember is that Paul and Joey both wrote a lot of riffs on the self titled and Iowa. Glad Ross didn’t.
Ross actually is a stellar producer, and it makes me happy to hear Paul get his dues. almost nothing beats Joey's drum sound on the self titled Slipknot album.

Ross is a good dude. He took time out of already busy schedule working with Korn and Tool to record a demo for my shitty funk metal band for basically no money. This was back in like 92 and he was already grinding so hard. He deserves every bit of his success for his contributions to heavy music.
Man Joey and Paul have a special place in my heart, Paul gray inspires me to continue on bass and corey on vocals and joey on how the song should feel and sound.
Paulie and Joey mean everything to me man. That music saved my life. Introduced me to this wonderful lifestyle and music

Paul gray inspired me to play bass since I was 4 and saw spit it out music video on tv and the dynamo show I was like wow this dude is cool like he’s going at it with the bass bought a bass guitar learned and I play his music thanks Paul #2 🙏

I only met Paul once, But he was the nicest, sweetest person, Mid Iowa tour, show with Slayer and God Forbid.. and he was the Kindest soul.. even then.. when they were just starting to fill stadiums

Co-founder of the band slipknot died at the age of 38. His name, "Paul Gray" summing to 38 in pythagorean. Clown's daughter died 83 days before Slipknot's new album was released.
His nickname was the pig.

I wish Slipknot recorded again with Ross Robinson, their chemistry was amazing and it shows on the first two albums. Rick Rubin really butchered that third album, and nothing against the guys that produced their other albums but Ross Robinson did something magical with Slipknot back in the day
He did capture magic w them however, though the first 2 albums are classic, most of us wouldn't want to hear the same album over and over. Their use of different producers hasn't hindered their quality. I met Corey Taylor recently and told him "you guys literally level up with each new album", which is true. Vol. 3 was bad, but it has its moments. Even if it was all bad we wouldn't have All Hope. .5 was another one that had it's moments but without it there wouldn't be WANYK which is probably the best album I've heard in years. Now take Korn for example. They went back to Ross after so many years and in an attempt to recapture the magic of their first 2 albums and created one of their worst collections of songs ever. So, I get what you're saying but I personally feel like it would be an unnecessary step for Slipknot. Maybe even a misstep.
Ross, you kick ass, dog. Appreciate the work you put into those albums and I like the way you talk about music.

I met Ross at a secret GlassJaw show in Camden NJ in 2002 and he was a really nice guy. Very supportive of the bands he works with and answers any question a fan has.
I saw them in Stockholm in 2001 Iowa tour it was awesome so much talent in that band
Paul gray is just a badass person his life story is crazy but it’s nice that he made a band and loved to play and write music
never imagined ross robinson to be this relaxed, though he wa smore agressive.
SlipknoT should really work with Ross Robinson on their last album.

@@111.5.b exactly. SlipknoT has been missing some elements and Corey wouldn't have to go all out like on the album, but I would love to hear one more Ross produced album, the way he pushed them, just made them pull out more of their talent that Rick or any other producer hasn't been able to.

the first few sentences ross says is part of the reason paul's death hit me hard.. out of all the members.. he was the foundation and glue that held the group together. I believe everyone in the band went at eachothers throats while paul was sitting there having a smoke hah

@@richardwellend3806 sorry man, but the first Limp Bizkit record is still the only album, that is really worth it without any filler and it is cause Ross and what was going on during the sessions. The energy, emotions and rawness are missing in their later records.
@@jackcravford8744 agree with you man, it’s a great debut record and they were totally insane live, so much energy and lyrically Fred was so much better here, like he had something to prove. Significant Other was far more dynamic sonically but was super clean production wise...and then it just got worse 😓 genuinely interested in what they have coming up though...

It is normal to talk like that, when you are passionate about something or about some people, that you love. The weight of emotions, can´t be sometimes expressed by words, the silence and glowing eyes are enough.
