Excellent work guys I absolutely love your work. Can we have tips for using trowel? Does it need to have that flat bottom?Mines ones are rounded tip or pointed tip? Is the selley’s pointing similar to apply? with cracked missing mortar do I clean out loose mortar, brush aways dust etc then force mortar in with trowel and let cure then point over it with flexible pointing as shown after I’ve ground ridge tiles cleaned etc? Cheers.
Selleys is fine. They all differ a bit but same principle. We use gouging trowel, rounded at bottom. Over time they just get worn with use and can look a bit flat. If there is anything loose or rough we use a cup grinder to grind top edge of all ridges before pointing. Yes, always either pressure wash or brush/blow when repointing. If old mortar is very bad, ie bits of bedding falling out everywhere, you likely will have to rebed
No I rarely go over same spot twice with pointing. Only necessary if you get a weird angle, sometimes happens on gable ends or apex's. Just butter up thicker. You will be able to see if it's innapropriate; if gap is too big then you will have to either fully rebed or tuck bed
Those tiles must be rock hard .. standing on the top course & valley cuts. Not many trowel marks by the looks of it .. don’t forget to poke the top ridge.

Ive been a roofer for 30 yrs ,That is a Monier Elbana Tiles .Im just wondering why you arnt matching the original Color & why is it being Repointed its looks fine .
It's being restored, so the colour isn't important, we point before we paint. With jobs like this pointing is left to the customers discretion, a lot of people want it done because they want the job to be 100%
Romans chapter 10 verse nine if you declare with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead the Bible says you will be saved Jesus loves u Any prayer put in comments
Yes you can see there are weep holes in the ridge. After we point and it goes off we go back and poke the holes through. If your ridge doesn't have weepholes either leave it alone and just point or drill them in with a long 6mm hammer drill.
That was Starpoint but I don't worry too much about it I use most brands. If it's new I run a key beneath the cap but for a repoint just make sure it's clean, either pressure wash or brush. Sometimes you may have to grind yourself an clean edge too depending on how wild the old pointing is
@abu7929 Thank you so much for your response. My roof is old and they didn't do flexi pointing back then, just motar. Now got all the crack and the bedding is currently not cut back( vertically )so you can apply the pointing (creating an angle for water running off) and like you said when bedding is freshly done, we can a screw driver/key to run along under the ridge tiles or hip tiles. How we do it with the old existing motar? Do you recommend the mix(like motar and pointing) to fix up crack or missing motar but the motar bond is still strong. I got Selley's pointing from Bunnings. Not use yet but ppl said its not creating a smooth surface. Have you tried them? Would you recommend Monier?
@@wheredoigofrhere Yeah Selley's is fine. If there's missing chunks of mortar you will have to tuck bed it before you point. So make up a 3:1 yellow bricks sand:cement mix and tuck that in with your trowel, then when it goes off you're ready to point. As I said, pointing should be clean, and if there's any problem with getting a seal with your trowel along the cap edge you will have to grind it back, have a look at cup grinders at Bunnings
That compound looks much easier to spread than the stuff I got. Did you add anything to it to make it softer or is that how it came straight out of the tub? What brand is it?
Do you not grind back Ridge edge for a more permanent bond . We see many new houses with pointing separating from Ridge tile from not at least wire brush or grind first
Don't know what you mean by that mate. New houses have a fresh bed, there is nothing to grind back. On this one it's been pressure cleaned, the existing pointing was sound. If it isn't a re-bed we either pressure clean or wire wheel for repoints.
Before the pointing goes off the weep holes are poked back through. They are necessary to let water escape when the pointing invariably develops cracks in the future
