The thing i’m struggling with is the labelling of Hamas as a terrorist group or some say resistance fighters, i was adamant that i saw them as a terror group before i seen something about Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was labelled a terrorist for taking up arms and fighting apartheid occupation. This is what has kind of put my view from adamant to a grey area of im not sure. I also habe to think what if just one british child was murdered unjustly by an occupying regime the whole country the whole of nato would erupt. The moment an occupying force even tried to enter our waters theyd be blown out of existence. Now 100s of children prior to oct 7 sre unjustly killed in the west bank and gaza by illegal settlers. 1000s being forced out of thier homes. Is the reaction of these people any different to what ours would be. Then i struggle with the label of terror and before people start going on im not in anyway shape or form sympathetic of terrorist whatsoever but a terrorist group for example Isis. Al Shabab, Al Quadea. The Caliphate. Lee Rigby here in london. The manchester arena bombing. 911. 7/7, the kidnapping of the school girls in africa. Like these as we can all agree are abhorrent terror attacks. People who attack for no reason whatsoever but for extreme radical senselessness targetting completely innocent people for absolutely no credible reason whatsoever but to cause death and terror. But with Palestine i see to many reasons that are infact real solid legitimate reasons and they have no actual legitimate means to resist but to do these evil things and this is why they need a recognised state be a recognised and respect and respectful member of the international community which in itself is crazy as why when the israeli state formally made 75 years ago what happened to Palestine that existed there anyway like why wasnt 2 states recognised in the moment of creating israel. We need peace and we need an end to the lobby groups theyre bad in the uk aswell its simply just legal bribery and is exactly why our nations are on a decline governments dont implement policies based on the best solutions for the people or the country the policies are all lobbied to serve self interests of the powerful groups and people and its all is average everyday hardworking citizens thats suffering gravely.
@@IsmailSubhanallah Let's add America to the topic for a second. In some places one can argue, they are doing good spreading their ideology. But in others they are seen as the terrorist(Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria to mention a few). The first half of the 20th century, the Chinese saw them as the imperialist terrorist trying to take away their land that the Chinese had lived on for millenia...
Lex understand the importance of context and he is apparently very serious about including it all in his hour long 'clips', especially when discussing issues as sensitive as this.
@@billcarson482 yes colonialist, a genocide. If you’d dig out your glorious history, you’d find that your ruling elite has done nothing but loot and massacres under the garb of democracy, freedom and human rights.
@@xyzabc9628 ohh right, because 'western democracy' has such a stellar historical track record in defence of human rights. man you have no critical thinking of your own
When you have even a basic understanding of the facts and history of the conflict you should be appalled by what doesn't amount to anything more than parroting Palestinian propaganda. It's incredible how an academic that is supposed to be an expert gets so many facts plain wrong at first and then spirals into maliciously and in bad faith parroting the most ridiculous misinformation. And honestly as a host, Lex should have stepped in and corrected him because this was egregious Just going over a few things. Israel has offered peace multiple times during Hamas reign of Gaza and the PA's rule of the West Bank. Arafat and Abass have each walked away from those peace talks and, in contrast to what the professor claimed, were clearly not interested in a two state solution. "Apartheid" is a hilarious accusation against the country with by far the best track record on human rights in the middle east. It's a complete joke of an accusation and all those reports do is twist security measures against Palestinian terrorism as constituting an apartheid regime. But by far the most baffling is the claim that Israel is ideologically determined to take all the land while both Hamas and the PA are interested in peace. Literally everything about the situation points to the contrary. Israel voluntarily withdrew from Gaza in 2005, Israel only strikes back after major terror acts that demand a response. Meanwhile Hamas charter states it wants to destroy the state of Israel and kill all the Jews. Protestors everywhere literally chant "from the river to the sea", yet it's Israel that wants all the land? In UNRWA schools, children are taught that Israel took their land and the land is all theirs. It's in childrens songs and everything. UNRWA teachers celebrated october 7th on social media. The degree of radicalization cannot be underestimated. The reason Arafat and Abass walked away from peace talks was because they could never sell a deal to their people that gave them only half off the land or less, because it's all theirs in their opinion. Oh wait I forgot about something even crazier. "Ethnic cleansing". If Israel wanted to ethnically cleanse Gaza they could do it, they could carpet bomb the place and kill hundreds of thousands yet they don't. Israel has a 20% Israeli Arab population while no Jew can live safely in the West Bank or Gaza, they'd be killed, but it's Israel that is ethnically cleansing areas? Claims about genocide are equally ridiculous and have no basis in reality. Definitely a moment where the host should have stepped in

No he is not a man of integrity especially when the facts have been revised, 1200 dead and a lot of those were not civilians and the majority of the deaths at the music festival were gunned down and literally obliterated by Apache gun ships this is from haratz. And and in one instance 18 hostages were killed by tank gun fire . And mowing the lawn? Is an Israeli objective and they are not shy about it and Netanyahu talking about Amalek? As in killing every man woman and child , so yeah he is being disingenuous. And the rape of women and be heading babies ? No evidence of it and yes we all condemn what hamas did.

It is amazing to see how people are capable of peace and violence at the same time. Thanks for choosing peace talks and I hope more people will come to understand the necessity and importance of peace.
Hamas sought to take a bunch of prisoners a la something that happened in the 2000s which led to them getting back their current PM. Israel responded by carpet bombing their citizens out of existence and this is extremely, extremely clear even in the footage that maniac UN ambassador shared- keep in mind hellfire missiles is not in hamas capability list. Israel was always an ethnofascist project. They character- and physically- assassinated away their leftist capacity by 80s.
Sorry tank shelling, was thinking about another incident, though they are currently trying to kill the hostages via carpet bombing. Read up on Hannibal doctrine. If you were an Israeli and not terrified of your own soldiers you are a fascistic puppet.
Until you think of Israel as sloppy, trigger-happy version of the most rightwing violent Republicans you are not going to understand what they are doing.
What’s amazing about it? That’s how it was throughout humanity’s existence. People are peaceful closer to their permanent places, and to those more similar to them, and violent toward either distant people or the different looking, sounding people.
Bravo on the discussion , i ve watched dozens of interviews but this is the best informative dialogue ive heard so far. Thank you for being intelligent pacifists
Informative drivel. This is as useful as a UN resolution. Radical islamists do not deliberate over intellectual masturbation. They know force, violence, and their goal is a global caliphate. This can not be reasoned with discussions and dialogues.

American national interest is unfortunately intertwined with the national interest of our allies. I agree, there are plenty of problems associated with the lobby institution within US politics. But, that aside - America needs a strong Israel to help maintain balance in the Middle East. And why does US needs a stable Middle East? As you prob know - resources mainly but to maintain our sphere of influence in the region.
@@jyc313 This is the neocon nonsense that has gotten us into trouble since 1945. No, we do not need to murder millions upon millions of Palestinians, Iraqis, Syrians, Vietnamese, Japanese, Koreans etc in order to be 'safe.' It is not 'safety' to piss off the rest of the world because you want to control the world: it is collective narcissism.
Thank you Lex for not shying away from controversial topics that get people cancelled and stir up so much commotion whether you take one side or the other, both or none. I appreciate your choice of guest to have a well informed, objective conversation about this complex matter. To his point about some people speculating that Hamas' (and by extension Iran's) motivation for the October 7th attack was to destroy Israel's chance of signing the Abrahamic Accords peace deal with the Arab world and subsequent potential 2 state solution being reached with Palestinians. Yuval Noah Harari, whom you've had on your show not too long ago, stated this claim in interviews I've seen with him recently. I've heard others proposing a secular, democratic, single state solution "from the river to the sea" where both groups coexist (Netanyahu and Hamas would both need to be removed from power since they have extreme, opposing, conflicting agendas that negate the other). Whatever happens, I hope all of the hostages are freed/rescued, and this horrific bombardment and deadly seige of innocent civilians in Gaza ends asap. There needs to be a ceasefire/hostage release before any long term peace deal can be reached. It's going to be a long road to healing and recovery for both Israelis and especially Palestinians since much of Gaza has been completely destroyed. Hoping for an outcome where they can both live freely and safely in their shared homemade.
100% agree, the only issue is, Israel has always been unwilling to offer that. They have in most part, prevented 2 states by not allowing true autonomy to Palestinians and has always refused to run as a true democracy, treating everyone within their borders equally. The only true way out, is a one state, TRUE democratic, equal citizenship type of system.. hey can always, assign Palestinian governors to regions like Gaza OR .. allow everyone to just live together peacefully without the borders. I do believe all of this is a result of Israel’s unwillingness and the USA’s unhinged support for their lack of democratic values and their obsession over existing - which at this rate and with Netanyahu is not going in the positive direction but rather the other way round. The biggest threat to Israel are not ‘Arabs’ (aka palestinians) or Hamas, ISRAEL is Israel’s biggest threat - with Netanyahu speed tracking israel at full speed into a wall. I just hope all this craziness stops and Israel finally removes the cloak of victimhood & supremacy that they shroud themselves over. This would honestly make EVERYONE including palestinians and israeli’s live more harmoniously and peacefully… the day their government see’s all inhabitants of the land as equals.
@@mervekirmizi2992 you are living in a dream world my brother. It’s a nice proposal and it’s been presented many many times, but not going to happen because of Israel’s absolute arrogance and self-centeredness. Too many Israelis r brainwashed to think they r special and all others no matter what race, don’t matter
I'll take a shot at answering the question. Although the Rafah border is between Gaza and Egypt, it is partly controlled remotely by Israel. That is, Israel has video surveillance of the border along with control of the gates. Egypt can only open one set of gates. Israel controls the other set of gates. Nothing can get into Gaza from the Rafah border unless Israel allows it. After this war is over, it is likely that Israel will have full control of this border even though it does not currently border Israel proper. As far as the blockade goes, it is pretty much an Israeli production. By the Camp David Accords, Egypt must keep the Sinai peninsula demilitarized. Egypt's primary concern is that if a significant number (if not all) of the Gazans are let into the Sinai, they will never be allowed to return to Gaza. This would not only be a major financial and political headache for Egypt, but it would also cause great turmoil for the Egyptian and Arab populace. As it is, a large part of the Palestinian population would not want to leave Gaza lest they be forced into exile again. It seems that Israel is pretty much destroying everything in Gaza, even its own citizens who are hostages. So, it's a pretty horrific situation.
@@arifshahabuddin8888you missed your shot. Israel does not have remote access of the Rafah Gate - it is solely and exclusively controlled by Egypt. Under a pact agreement, Israel has control of the Palestinian population registry, which determines who is allowed to go through Rafah Crossing. Furthermore, Egypt has agreed to provide Israel with details on commercial trade conducted through the gate, but it exclusively within Egypt’s control and sovereignty. The Egyptians don’t give a damn if the Gazans are displaced, so long as they are not displaced into Egypt. The last time Egypt allowed a significant number of Palestinians into the country, there were 40 suicide bombs in a year.

Funny that he says that Arafat was in favor of a two state solution. Well, he rejeceted time and time again each of the extremeley generous offers from the Israeli side, and responded with Intifada. “They will not go away. We will not go away. We are doomed to live here together. And we have to choose whether to share this land, or to share the graveyard under it.” -an Israeli father of a child murdered by Hamas. You can care about the humanity of both groups at the same time.
I disagree with him regarding the Armenian Conflict. The tragedy of 1915 was not genocide. The hostilities were initiated by the Dashnak and the Hunchak militias in league with Tsarist Russia to overthrow the Ottoman state. They massacred thousands of Turks, Kurds and fellow Armenians in that effort. Far more Turks and Kurds were killed in the conflict. Armenians in Istanbul were not harassed by the Ottomans. The tragedy of the deportation was the result of incompetence of the Ottomans to adequately protect Armenians but it was not a planned extermination.
I wish you would have asked if the billions of dollars worth of Natural Gas in Gaza waters and the plan to create the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is defining how Isreal executes the war? Also, have you watched the Chris Hedges/Max Blumenthal segment today? If not, please do.
This may influence the UK foreign policy in the area, as Rishi Sunak's father-in-law recently signed lucrative contracts to develop those Natural Gas fields. I imagine these would be far more profitable if it wasn't necessary to share the proceeds with the Palestinians.

I understand that this clip resonates with many of you. Both of them however are still stuck on this naive view of the conflict, thinking that it is just straight-forward to apply western thinking to both parties. That could be a fatal mistake in my opinion. Self-criticism (being critical of a country with largely Western values) is naturally much easier for Mearsheimer, Lex and the rest of us than being critical about the Palestinian population and its "regimes". This should be kept in mind when trying to analyse the conflict and coming up with a viable solution. Let's all try to get out of our "Western Bubble" and critically think about what the real reasoning of a Hamas fighter might be. It might be painful, but it is neccessary.
It's hard to follow this rationale when every Israeli official has verbatim stated a genocidal intention when it comes to Palestinians. There's no real distinction with Hamas in that respect. Poor leadership on both sides with disastrous results for the ppl caught in the literal crossfire.

If you asked chat GPT should Palestinian have the right to be free? It says that this is a complex matter and then it goes on to say it depends on many factors. If you ask does Israel has the right to freedom?it says yes. So artificial intelligence is neither artificial or intelligent. The occupied force wants to paint the picture that it is a complex matter so that the vast majority of good people do you not understand what is going on. If people understood it for what it is, which is it is an unbalance, one-sided massacre. All you have to do is look at the death tolls on each side. Hamas Send firecracker rockets over time to time in return for their families and people being killed and detailed for years in prisons without charge many of whom are tortured. Israel in return fires back huge bombs that kills thousands of people. There you have your balance?

@@rdothl5Shows you know little about the situation in Gaza. No commercial ships are allowed to the port with Gaza and the people of Gaza are limited to only 5 nautical miles from the coast anything more than that they are shot to death. Their airspace are blocked by Israel.
You make several claims about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that present one-sided perspectives. However, the conflict is complex with valid grievances, suffering, and aspirations on both sides. Casualty numbers alone do not determine moral responsibility or the full human impact look at WW2 America killed over a million japenese civilians while only 13,000 or so Americans citizens died. Was America in the wrong for attacking the japenese back? Of course not. Your characterization of Hamas is biased. While they retaliate against injustice, they also provoke unprovoked attacks and impose authoritarian rule that violates human rights. Your portrayal of Israel is also simplistic and unfair. Israel aims to defend itself and its citizens while minimizing casualties. It faces threats not just from Hamas but other Muslim states that hate israel Ultimately, the conflict does not have a simple narrative of good versus evil. Reasonable people can disagree on the nuances while still advocating for a just and peaceful solution that respects the rights and dignity of both Israelis and Palestinians. @ofCourseI There are over 4 dozen muslim states in the world and one Jewish one. The only country who's legitimacy is ever questioned is Israel's. The Jews don't even question Palestine's right to exist as a state. They have repeatedly pushed for a two state solution which the Palestinians have repeatedly rejected every single time for the last 7 decades. To further prove my point that no one ever questions Muslim countries, take Pakistan as an example. Pakistan never existed before the 1940s and millions of Indians were killed or forcefully displaced when it was founded. It's history is far more dubious than Israel's and I've never heard a single person say "Pakistan is illegitimate". Nobody gives a fuck about questioning Pakistan's legitimacy. The only reason anybody questions Israel is because they are racist and don't like Jews. That's it.
There is zero ethnic cleansing happening by the Jews. Muslims and even Palestinians hold elected office in Israel. That's not ethnic fucking cleansing. Meanwhile, there are zero Jews in the Gaza Strip because they'd be killed on sight. Hamas's slogan is literally "We love death as much as the Jews love life." The idea that the "ethnic cleansing" is happening in Israel is an absolute fucking myth that is perpetuated by useful idiots on tiktok. Stop peddling a genocidal terrorist organizations propaganda and try to get educated on this. Really try because I promise you that your knowledge of the conflict is superficial and you're supporting one of the worst terrorist organization in human history.
Again what occupation is there in Gaza? There’s not a single Jew there, Israel withdrew in the early 2000s. Instead of building a strong Palestinian state the Palestinians chose to build a terrorist state.
The occupation of Palestine , nobody talks about an occupation in gaza . Haha what a midtard. How on earth you could think that Palestine as a state supports crazy jihaddists man .. make yourself a favor, go to the library and educate yourself a little
When Carter was president, HAMAS did not exist, at all. I like this guys take on "ukraine" conflict, but shit his saying about Israel is just so off, im starting to have doubts that does he actually know anything..
It is funny that you mentioned Bosnia. i am born and raised in Yugoslavia I went to the JNA for those who don't know, it was the Yugoslavian army. We didn't have that kind of hate when Tito was alive and even after his death till the end of 1989. And then suddenly all started as magic, yes helped by the USA goons and the CIA puppets. So it is strange when the USA and Izraely interest are in question anything can happen spontaneously. Just an observation nothing more.
Yeah. Many countries can relate 😅 Once the Americans get involved all of sudden there’s a civil war and everyone wants to kill each other even tho just a year prior these same groups lived side by side with each other for generations. It’s very interesting how that works.
@@thevillageyidtwo states solution can be negotiated from time to time based on conditions. But continuous illegal settlement expansion eliminated the possibilities
@@thevillageyidThe authorities in the West Bank have already agreed to a two-state solution yet Israel has never stopped facilitating the settlements. Why is that?
Either mention a specific argument that you have an issue with or spare us your identification as "An Israeli" - The only thing factual about Israeli's is the Hasbara they spew out as facts.
The Palestinians have been presented with a two-state solution many times over the years and always rejected it. Unfortunately the offers aren’t going to get better with how far right the Israeli government has become.
Those two state solutions were heavily biased towards Israel and never included any guarantee that they could actually function completely outside of Israeli military control. You can’t offer someone a state and then tell them that state has to be under supervision by their occupiers.
You can if you’re offering a police state. Wonder why the Palestinians rejected that? The disingenuous previous offers of a two-state solution should not deter the two sides from seeking a fair and equitable one now. Except now, Israel has created such heartbreaking atrocities against these people that the world stands SHOCKED in horror. It’s almost like they wanted a two-state solution to be off the table forever…..hmmm….😢
The professor lost me when he said, "The Israelis, I believe, are quite interested in ethnic cleansing." And when he says Israel is an apartheid state, it diminishes the experiences of those in South Africa who lived and suffered in an actual apartheid state.
Two-state soultion doesn't work. In order to work, the two states have to be territorially compact to some degree. They have to have access to resources independently, borders should not go through large cities and split the communities, there shouldn't be large enclaves like Gaza, etc...

Amazing! Very polite, descriptive and sensible analysis by Professor Mearsheimer
Professor Mearsheimer.
And honestly as a host, Lex should have stepped in and corrected him because this was egregious
Just going over a few things.

Not to mention Hamas was the standard Jakarta Method rightwing antagonist - only created by Israel in this case rather than the textbook US template.

American national interest is unfortunately intertwined with the national interest of our allies. I agree, there are plenty of problems associated with the lobby institution within US politics.

Question to the 'expert' John Mearsheimer ... Egypt is blockading Gaza. Does that mean that Egypt is also occupying Gaza in the same way as Israel?

Normally Lex Friedman appears astute while thoughtful which is so different than his moderation on this video.
This is the first time I have seen Lex avoiding to talk about an issue and skirting around the topic of Israeli lobby. Maybe they got to him as well.
Even the language he uses in his arguments is quite telling, "People have compared the attack on Oct 7th to the holocaust and then also in the OTHER DIRECTION", can not even explicitly say it. Lex you disappointed us. I genuinely believed your charade of "believes in love and understanding". Special interests also got to you.
Absolutely agree with that, I saw it and heard it too. His normal curious, insightful questioning was put on a leash. I don't like to say things like they got to him, I honestly dont think that is the case, I think its just about being mindwashed and ignorant of the facts.

Oh the bubble died eons ago, you can thank the internet
It's hard to follow this rationale when every Israeli official has verbatim stated a genocidal intention when it comes to Palestinians. There's no real distinction with Hamas in that respect. Poor leadership on both sides with disastrous results for the ppl caught in the literal crossfire.
Have the Palestinian leadership ever accepted Israel’s right to exist? Don’t think so.
Yes they did. Israel on the other hand is an apartheid regime

What do you mean by free? People of Gaza were at their own since 2005 and elected terrorists and attacked other country all the time.

It faces threats not just from Hamas but other Muslim states that hate israel
Ultimately, the conflict does not have a simple narrative of good versus evil. Reasonable people can disagree on the nuances while still advocating for a just and peaceful solution that respects the rights and dignity of both Israelis and Palestinians. The path forward requires recognizing the legitimate complexities rather than reducing them to moralistic labels.

I wish that the Jewish people had a homeland, but I know the holocaust victims and survivors wouldn't have wanted to see this ethnic cleansing happen in their name.

As an Israeli, I simply don’t see the reality as he does. There are so many assumptions and conclusions drawn which aren’t factual or correct.
