Ironclad Brikinger NEO GEO MVS Review! - Unreleased Prototype MVS GAME!
This game was originally only available to consumers as a NEO GEO AES CD game. The game is very sought after and is one pricey CD! The game was shown BITD at a tradeshow for the MVS, the arcade version. The game was never released as an arcade version. It was shelved. The MVS arcade version code surfaced recently and it has been made into an MVS cart by the fans. Pretty cool!

The story behind me making the carts is that when the rom went pubic, everyone was selling carts for $300 a pop so I decided to undercut all the people trying to profit off the Neo community by selling them for $100 to redirect the community away from those types. As of early 2014, I no longer keep them in stock and are on a pre-order basis if someone wants to purchase one. I've also been helping people with tech questions on how to build their own Ironclad cart since the files are public. Glad you enjoyed the game.

The warehouse store tour in denver was really outstanding seeing all the old test equipment for all the different companies so cool!! and the Blazing star video and the Ironclad video superb man!! Both games kind of remind me of R-type in some way. Both look awesome!! Love the neo geo mvs system wish i had one. Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into your amazing videos. Congratulations on appearing in Edge magazine John. Will look out for that issue over here in the UK.
Nice video John! - just FYI i would say you are correct that conversions are frowned upon, but typically that applies to the AES home carts. The reason for that is that there is rampant bootlegging - especially on eBay of guys selling conversions and passing them off as originals.
But in the case of Ironclad - because the game was never available on the MVS and it is universally known that its a conversion so there is really no issues with that.

grew up in the arcades mostly on hollidays in countries like spain, france and italy. - god I miss TOKI !!! ... In germany we had very few. Just a couple machines in some sports bars sometimes if you were lucky :) ... and I never forget glazing at the neogeo titles in our local import-shop never understood how damn expensive they could be. the boutique pinnacle of home-arcade-gaming :D ...nowadays got a few jamma-machines and my precious metal slug x card :)

Hey John. Could you somehow mix the audio from the neo geo with your lapel mic via the headphone jack on the neo? This might alleviate the sound complaints with the speakers as you'd get a direct connection this way. Could even adjust eh EQ if you desired ;) Shane in Omaha, NE
oh wow that looks like a fun shooter! Interesting story too how it wound up on Wii Virtual Console but not any of the NEO*GEO home versions. Great arcade videos as always man!
oh and ps, amazing lil story with that neogeo cart/rom john, i love how they ripped the rom and made it functional on original hardware like it was originally intended :) , after all them years too, i hope that if anyone from snk see`s it, it inspires them or makes them at least smirk at how passionate the retro nutters can be.

U know the shooters like other games we played back then was like how far u can go with 1 credit,thats how i and few others i knew as well played em back at the arcades.
Usually the one credit was because:1st wanted to get really good at the game and 2nd we did not want to spend too many coins back,then since we did not have much money as kids/teens
There were exceptions to this ofc depending on the type and difficulty of the game,usually we just wanted to see what was next so sometimes we continued

Hey John, what joysticks are you using in your Neo Geo? I have a 4 slot that I picked up to use as a MAME machine - everything had been stripped out of it so it was just a shell. I'm hoping to eventually convert it back to a 4 slot if it doesn't cost too much. Would it be worth it to do that or should I just look for another working 4 slot. Was going to send this in through viewer mail but thought it would have a better chance of being seen here. Great channel - always appreciate new videos.
I have the stock NEO joysticks. No idea where to get them today. I'd check ebay for a parted control panel?

Will the roms also work in the AES carts??
As far as I know MVS roms are used in AES conversions.
BTW pick King of Fighter 98. It's the best version on the Neo Geo. ;)
The King of Fighters 94 actually uses those boards too so is it not probable that its all original kof94 apart from the eproms ? cool show dude
These are fun. I do like your NEO Geo Playthroughs. You should think about getting Baseball Stars. They made two of them I believe and they are arcade like baseball games that you may get a kick out of.
I did enjoy how you were like "This game is easy. You can do this in one credit" then later on in the video you keep dying again and again and again... always great entertainment from you John. ha ha ha. Keep it up.

If anyone is thinking about making a mame cabinet, I strongly recommend using an crt arcade monitor, ati gfx card, crt_emu drivers & groovymame. I've just finished mine myself & the picture looks amazing when running these games in the correct resolutions.

Congrats on the magazine article, John. I'm happy that a guy so passionate about his hobby gets some exposure. You've sunk so much time into reliving the arcade experience, working hard to learn more about the cabinets and working on them, then sharing you're love and passion just makes for a highly entertaining show. It just keeps getting better, and you deserve some praise. Easily the most likeable youtuber, and best host. You deserve a reward or something, like "You Tuber of the Year" or something. Keep it rolling!
I wanted you to make a t-shirt with "Hey, guys!" but Pixel Dan beat you to it, that's if you even wanted to do that. Maybe a "John's Arcade" t-shirt? Someday? Or is that too hokey? I'd just like to support the show and maybe some of that profit can go to helping the show out, such as the mic.
You always refer to,your machine as a 4-slot, are there larger slot,machines or mods to have more then 4-carts? Or is your machine the largest slot model? Sorry I don't know much about the NEO-GEO arcade upright machines.

Like the Journey topper, now all you need is the album shrinkwrapped beside it! As for which King of Fighters was the best, I have to say the series attained perfection with '98. Also loving the viewer mail section and feel priviledged being the first letter read.
This is one of my favorites shmups !!
scoring advice: try to use mostly charged attack (it drops medals on kill for scoring) ! and for boss fights, send the robot on it and spam shot ;-)
Don't forget if you are in a dangerous area with a lot of shots, when the robot is attached, he can absorb a few hits !
Great game John. Yes James JNX has the best version. I own an AES version which had spanish text and dark video (sound was fine) . I picked up the MVS version from JNX which fixed all the issues and then (get this) James hooked me up with the correct ROM to fix my AES cart. Now both work perfect. The Wii version is messed up with dark video and spanish text . To get the best version, reach out to James at JNX. BTW: I paid for the Wii version and I paid for as new copy of the Neo Geo CD version. There is no official AES version, but yes, the official version was NEO_CD only. (The Neo CD version is perfect of course).

If you don't already have it, you should get Windjammers for your mvs and do a video on it.
That's a great game. To add to the list of stuff you can play it on, you can actually play it on the Dreamcast too. You can download and burn an emulated version that plays just like the Neo Geo CD version.

The Game was on the Neo Geo CD but, The Wii Rom's of the game were patched to MVS.
I agree with previous posters recommendation of groovymame and CRT emu driver, with a arcade monitor of course, it is truly the way to do things for the best reproduction of exact resolutions and refresh, it makes mame pretty much flawless.
For front-end, although not free (unless you can put up with the nagscreens) I find gameex to best, simply because of the categorisation system is far superior to hyper spin, hyper spin being 2nd choice for me.
It's funny that the Wii version ended up being based on the unreleased, sought after MVS ROMs instead of the home CDROM version. Maybe that was a technical convenience... but I find myself wondering if somebody at SNK did it on purpose as a subtle way of leaking the files out so that people could get hold of them.

Unfortunately, you are going to struggle buying this game on the Wii Market Place as it's now offline. Good video and I admire the fact you wanted to give the developer some money though.
In regards to the MAME cabinet, I have a Street Fighter 2 Alpha that was previously an X-Men Children of the Atom. I plan on rebuilding the control panel from scratch. So the original harness etc.. is going to be stored safely and I'm thinking of seeing maybe I can get a metal shop to cut and bend the control like the original that fits into the cabinet. A Jamma harness cable + power supply + joystics / buttons are very cheap. So I plan on going that route.
I've seen projects where people have destroyed Galaga or Galaxian or other classic games to turn into a MAME cabinet, which is one of the reason MAME has gotten such a bad rap from collectors. I unfortunately don't have much space I may be able to get a 2nd cabinet in the future.

Hmm, KoF '97 eh? I'm not sure what to suggest to be honest. See, '97 is a great game but '98 is the one you want to show people new to the series. However, '98 was recently RE-re-released (yes, re-released again) as The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition. This version not only plays on modern, home hardware but includes new stuff and extra fighters and such so perhaps you want to show that instead??
The problem with '97, as you might remember, is that it has a lot of ambient 'music' instead of actual tunes playing during fights. Only the more famous characters have their theme tunes play; for the rest of the time it's crowd noise or drums or fireworks or whatever. I mean it's not a huge problem but it's like a refined KoF experience in a way. For those who played '94 through '96 and are seasoned pros now.
Heck, you might want to just get all 10 (I think) MVS carts in the series! From what you've said though, I doubt that very much. :P

Is Blazing Star better? Yes. No contest, but Ironclad is very unusual compared to most NeoGeo games. Most NG games are brightly colored, while Ironclad has a burned-out building-look. -- Ironclad pulls off an array of special effects that the SNK hardware was not intended to do so its all done in software. Playing through the game, you will see very nice transparencies, picture-in-picture popup effects, and more. I personally really like Ironclad. for its style, multi-branching and I like the pre-rendered graphics which are done every well compared to other neo-games that tried the same thing. One more thing. Do not play IronClad on an LCD or any progressive scan display. The game absolutely needs an interlaced display for many of its special effects to look their best.
