What a sad state of affairs Matt. It's such a shame to see a cemetery left in such disrepair.
It's not surprising that the families don't even look after their own because it's in rural America and most kids grew up and moved away.
Many of the last couple generations didn't grow up with the importance of visiting their family gravesites. I've spoken to people who have NEVER visited their family gravesites or even been to a cemetery. I think that is sad. I grew up with parents that made the trip at the very least, twice a year to our family gravesites. We took a picnic, blanket and chairs. My dad would trim the bushes on the family plot, dig up the headstones to lay gravel under them to stop them from sinking. My parents would wash & scrub down everything and keep the stone free of any mess or deteriorating composites. It was always a 2 day visit and I would wonder around visiting other graves. I still visit the same graves as I did as a child. I don't think it's creepy or weird, because I grew up with this activity. I took over caring for the family plot when I lost my parents at 16. My parents are also buried there and I make sure that I take care of it. It's a big part of my family history and even though I'm 5 hours away I still visit twice a year. I still bring lunch and a chair and park under the same tree as my dad. I think it's a tradition lost in history.

Those little stone tablets against the tree or by the headstones are makers for the foot of the grave, unless they have more than initials on them then they are tiny headstones. Many times the foot stones are moved for the ease of mowing the cemetery. Most places do not use foot stones any more. BTW usually you have to contact the county for permission to clean up a cemetery for what ever group who has an interest in cleaning. This cemetery does look like someone mows it fairly regularly. The cemetery that our Boy Scout troop cleaned up had saplings everywhere and brush so bad you couldn’t even tell there where graves under it. It took two different troops two years to get about 2/3rds of it cleaned and then an elderly man took over and cleaned up the headstones that had grass growing over them and he chopped down all the thick vines that had taken over. It was a back breaking job for everyone involved but well worth it.

Don't worry about cars going by, especially out in the country. People are slowing down so they will not hit your car. Or, if you have an out of state plate, they just want to see where you are visiting from. The only time anybody is really going to bother you at a cemetery, is if you visit at night. Or if you are visiting a cemetery on private property. (Signs may or may not be posted to that fact.) And they probably would not appreciate the night thing either. Keep posting, LOVE your videos.

A couple of observations; That bone was from a cow. There are "gnaw" marks on the bone. I assume that is from a dog. Maintenance of old cemeteries present a costly headache to local govt's if they own them. In my neck of the woods there are many small towns and larger cities that, back in the 19th century, bought tracts of land and established publicly owned/operated grave yards. In the last half of the 19th century, VA state govt. set up a "Perpetual Care" fund. It required localities who operated cemeteries to send a portion of each plot sale to Richmond. It was placed in an interest bearing account. Each year, Richmond would disburse a portion of the interest to contributing governments to be used for the upkeep of their cemeteries. Back in the day, upkeep was not an expensive undertaking. Today, however, those beautiful cemeteries with the raised stones and monuments present a costly headache to maintain. All of those stones have to be trimmed around with a weedeater. That is why modern cemeteries require an inset stone or brass plaque. They can then use a mowing machine and cut right over them. Good video young man.

That place just makes me sad. There's some very pretty gravestones in that place. The Victorian era stones had such detailing and beauty and a lot were probably done by hand from a vision in the sculptor's mind and can't be duplicated by mere machine. Fine artwork, history and someone's legacy just going to waste. Makes me heartsick. ❤ and appreciation for your concern for these places. Be safe, Matt.

I've been thinking about my grandparents and parents graves. I moved across the country and there is no one to look after their graves now except when I go home to visit. I paid for perpetual care and they are in city cemeteries. I also pay to have flowers placed each month and old friends check on them but one day we'll be gone and no one will visit them. I've worked out our genealogy and have records back to 1626 so there's that.

historic old cemetery in need of a lot of tlc. There is some maintenance in the form of mowing the grass.trees need to be pruned or taken down.Plantlife needs to be removed.Guess that there are several markers in the ground or they are covered by moss or roots from vegetation.Takes time, effort and money to restore the markers but it would be sad that they are lost.Places like these are part of our history.By showing these cemeteries/ graveyards on YT Matt shows to us that these places need attention from (local) authorities and organisations and its inhabitants.

With over population and all we are running out of land and I mean no disrespect to any ones graves or graveyards.
There is a suite one can buy that is cloth that degrades, filled with mushroom spores that eat the body and detox it. The suite is freez dried in plastic till needs to be used.
Regular funeral directors hate it because they want to stick to BIG EXPENCES for funerals. They don't care about pollution with crazy chemicals, metal boxes and such.
Right now because it's just getting started I think the suites are $5,000. each but that could go down if it ever catches on.
Then there's a cheaper way to just wrap the body in cloth and put in a biodegradable wicker basket. Family or friends could dig the grave or for alittle more money the company can do it. Again funeral directors hate that. Preachers work with funeral directors brain washing folks into believing that if the body isn't placed in the ground intact or something that they'll never get to heaven or some such thing. That's what they did to my mother in 1976, they tried to soak her for ALOT of money, I made sure THAT did not happen and my dad still had a decent well cared for send off. I'm an Army Vet and my dad was a Vet and he got a very fitting military funeral. I FIRED that funeral director.😁
Lots of times funeral directors get their caskets over seas or at Wal Mart and places like that for next to nothing then charge and arm and a leg. I don't hate them, they have to make a living and all but at what expence?

The stones piled up against the tree at 3:30 are "foot stones" and were placed at the end or "foot" of the grave opposite of the large "head stone" at a grave. The foot stone would have the person's initials on it (as seen in the pics), and would only stick out of the ground about high enough to be hit by a modern power grass mower and bend the blades, so usually dug out and removed to make mowing the grass easier for the grounds keeper. The foot stones were "stylish" around the turn of the last century.

You're right, that's not a human femur. 13:54 its a deer's front Left femur I would guess, and it's bleached white so it's always been on the surface. With the age of that place, the bones that were buried there are most assuredly all gone now. With all that plant life and moisture that soil is fairly acidic so wood and bone won't last very long. I would question that broken vault though. I assume some kids helped that one along... who knows when, not recently it looks. That place might have shut down 90 years ago.

I don't feel that it was disposable income per se, but death was kind of an obsession for people in the Victorian Era and Early 20th Century prior to WWI. They would actually save money for elaborate funerals and monuments, obviously the wealthiest had the best, but it was still a pride thing to have the best that one's money could buy. You might notice that more stones commonly became smaller and less ornate in the Thirties after the Great Depression, except for the elite who were able to keep their money. At the same time, priorities changed, and more people were more concerned about living in the now, and not prioritize death as much.

The brick structure at 17:40 is an early brick "vault" similar to ones popular in the 1960s (made of concrete now) and covered with a stone slab, the coffin or casket would be placed inside, not beneath as you talk about. The same is done now-a-days, with only 8-12 inches of dirt over the lid. The one you found, with the top broken and casket missing, was either opened for re-interment (re-buried someplace else) or opened by vandals to rob the skeleton for some reason (done many times in the past). If you ever visit a cemetery from the 18th century, especially in New England, you'll find above ground vaults made of stone, with a coffin placed inside and covered by a stone lid. Many have been vandalized in the past for curiosity or souvenir hunters (bones, skeletons). Finally, you may find brick structures such as this in areas where the ground freezes very hard in winter, the intentions of such a "holding vault" was to place a coffin inside, cover it until the ground thawed in spring and a grave could be dig; remember, graves were dug by hand back then, and digging in frozen ground was not easy.

Just a question here....did somebody at one time come up to you and give you a hard time for being in a cemetery?? It seems like in every single one of your videos you spend a good third of the time being paranoid about "somebody" coming up to you. It's very distracting. It's a cemetery...people are supposed to visit, so why would anybody care that you're walking around? And also...as fascinating as these videos are, they would be a LOT more interesting to those of us who love walking through graveyards if you would LET US READ THE HEADSTONES!!!!!! Seriously, if you don't want to spend the time reading them, then at least give us a good angle so that we can pause the video and read them ourselves. In one of the last videos you passed by three headstones and said "wow, those are really interesting" and then showed us absolutely nothing!! I do appreciate the time you take to make these videos Matt, but I cannot tell you how frustrating this is. If you have no intention of letting us read the stones, fine, that is your choice, your channel, but please let us know so I can find another channel that will show me what I want to see. Cemeteries are more than just stones, they are made up of people who had lives and families and histories....and that is what many of us wonder about, not if there is a divot here or there, or if there are pretty trees. I'm sorry to sound like I'm complaining, but I know that there are many people like me who are frustrated with this. Thanks for listening, God bless...and have a wonderful day.

It"s odd that there is a big open space in the middle and most of the stones are on the edge of the cemetery near the trees.Been watching a lot of your videos, wish I could do as good as you but have been having a hard time getting myself going and running into some bad luck.

A lot of people will take this the wrong way. But honestly, we all know the graves are not forever... The caskets are rotted away, and all that remains is some bones.
The persons spirit is departed. That person doesn't give a damn about their bones anymore. They are probably enjoying seeing old relatives and not being in pain anymore.
It's not disrespectful with the conditions of these cemetery's, life just moves on.

Yes, this old resting place is sad! Thank heaven there are people like you to resurrect them. One good thing about this cemetery is there seem to quite a few blackberry vines. Maybe some people would come out to clean up and pick berries in the fall! Watching your vids makes me home sick!

No, not illegal. Local people get suspicious why a non-family member would visit so they assume it's to vandalize or worse.
If you're young with red or green hair you look even more suspicious.

While it's sad to see these forgotten places it doesn't surprise me. In rural areas there just aren't a lot of people around and certainly fewer with time on their hands to maintain cemetaries.

I have found graves while hunting. Many are long forgotten and miles off of any road,,, One that stands out the most was on top of the highest point in Ohio. Sunshine ridge,,, They have an old but well kept cemetery there . These two graves was well out into the woods away from the kept up cemetery. The graves was done in a time they would leave mounds on top, Meaning they would dig them and not haul dirt away but would put all the dirt back, Couldn't read the markers, The names was just etched in stone . But they was buried under a oak tree, The oak tree was dead but still standing, The tree had to be well over 200 years old when alive

I live in the UK it makes me sad when i see the state of some of the old grave yards here these graves are the resting place of once living humans and they deserve more respect.

12:24 the graves are normally dug to 6 feet then vault put in. After lowering casket the put the vault lid on. So the top of the vault and casket is about 2-2 1/2 foot below the surface. My guess is that remains where moved. I work in funeral business and probably in a cemetary everyday or so. Love your videos.

They need to assign people in jails to clean these areas up. They can use this as a way they can payback society for their wrongs they have committed. This is the most cost effective solution, no need for the prisoners to sit all day watching tv. We need to build a society that cares for others.

Such a shame to see a cemetery in such bad shape.Maybe most relatives have passed as the few graves I could see dates on seem to be in the 1800. One of them looked like 1860. Its too bad a church group or groups couldnt look into the care. Keep Safe❤Keep Well❤

No reaction for me, either....I used to get tasked with pulling up the poison ivy along our fences at home because it didn't bother me at all. You do have to make sure that you remove and change all your clothing after it's done though, since others might be allergic. It's a matter of washing thoroughly and contaminating as little as possible when you're finished.
