  • Today we are in the beautiful village of Screen.
    Hidden behind abandoned buildings is a little cemetery. Unfortunately this cemetery is sinking fast and most of the headstones are barely above ground anymore.

    Thanks Sue, this is very poignant. Where I live there is an old part of the cemetery dating back to the early 1700s and a new part which is from the mid 1800s onwards.
    The old part has a lovely old mausoleum which is now empty but still has a huge plaque giving details of the Lady who’s mausoleum it was. As a teenager I was fascinated by history and genealogy and so I spent so many hours in the old centenary trying to do the old stone rubbings.
    Like yours some had severely sunk, some of the actual graves had sunk. There were a couple of stones that were split with weather and some said lightning.
    To this day and I’m 65 today, I still love graveyards and hubby and I have travelled over Scotland and the Isles tracing our family tree. It’s not morbid as some. Folk think but it’s in fact beautiful

    Hi Sue, very interesting and a fabulous display of lichens (something I studied at uni) there are some 2000 different types, many are to be found on gravestones. They grow incredibly slowly, some only half a millimetre a year. Different types are to be found on different stone and substrates. There is a society of lichenometry, you should join as you see so many 😂😂

    • @paulsalmo7070

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards yes, different types grow on different type of rock/stone used for headstones (of the 2000 types found in the U.K. over 600 have been identified on tombstones )Interestingly lichens were used in early dying of materials and especially kilts in Scotland years ago. Also if you’ve ever heard of a ph test ? The liquid we use to determine acidity/alkalinity (litmus test) is derived from a lichen 👍 The various colours of lichen are caused by the various compounds that they produce to deter herbivores etc and these were often used in early antibiotics 👍

    An ìnteresting little place and the first thing I notice is how you need to walk up steps as the burial level is a lot higher than road level. I found it very strange how the burials are crammed on a little uneven hill, I looked on Google earth and there are flat fields all around so why set up a grave yard on a hill that would causes all sorts of problems for the grave diggers🤔 its not very practicle.
    These is also my conspiratorial thoughts on these raised grave yards. Calton burial grounds are very similar the burial area is a lot higher than the road and its very uneven.

    What is the story of the lichen covered headstone? Mary of Magdalene , mentioned on the stone? I’m on my tiny phone looking. Maybe about the crucifixion also? I see the other headstone with Jesus on the beautiful headstone.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  Год назад

      It's the scene from the crucifixion, I find a lot of the 1700s have them, so our lord on the cross, some have soldiers, ladders coins and even roosters. All depicting the crucifixion. That stone had Mary the virgin and Mary Magdalene

    you need a pair of wellies up to your knees,,, I thought the cemetery is pretty good shape actually ,, the grass needs a bit of trimming but other wise those old head stones probably fall apart trying to sit them erect
