- Today we are in the beautiful village of Screen.
Hidden behind abandoned buildings is a little cemetery. Unfortunately this cemetery is sinking fast and most of the headstones are barely above ground anymore.

Thanks a million Liz, missed you in the Live, appreciate it so much ❤
@@SerenitySueGraveyards very welcome!
Thanks Sue, this is very poignant. Where I live there is an old part of the cemetery dating back to the early 1700s and a new part which is from the mid 1800s onwards.
The old part has a lovely old mausoleum which is now empty but still has a huge plaque giving details of the Lady who’s mausoleum it was. As a teenager I was fascinated by history and genealogy and so I spent so many hours in the old centenary trying to do the old stone rubbings.
Like yours some had severely sunk, some of the actual graves had sunk. There were a couple of stones that were split with weather and some said lightning.
To this day and I’m 65 today, I still love graveyards and hubby and I have travelled over Scotland and the Isles tracing our family tree. It’s not morbid as some. Folk think but it’s in fact beautiful
I completely agree, I find peace in cemeteries and old graveyards..
It's not morbid how else can someone learn about their family etc. History is fascinating, thanks for sharing the state and contents of a neat place. Hopefully soon it could get needed attention because of the video. Happy hunting for your family line. From the States, CA
Forgotten cemataries are so lonesome. Sue thank you for sharing.
Yes they are
What a beautiful, yet poignant place. When there is no one left to remember us, it’s like we never existed at all. 😢 It was nice of you to visit and read the names you could make out.
That's so true, that makes it so sad 😞
Thank you for bringing us along, it’s a shame to see those beautiful headstones disappearing into the earth 😢. God bless 🙏💕🇨🇦
It would make you sad Roxanne, so much history, so many stories almost lost. They deserve to be remembered. Sometimes it gives me great sadness to know we too will be forgotten ❤️
You’re a trooper Sue! Thank you for giving it a go. Dreary days…
Thanks so much Amy ❤️
Loved this one Sue. It's sad to see how nature is kind of reclaiming the land and seeing the headstones slowly disappearing. But this video, as well as all your others, will at least keep memories alive and hopefully future generations may use it to go and explore this great looking place for themselves.
Thanks Chris, I for some reason found it sad, I've been to many forgotten places but this one just hurt. Everyone deserves to be remembered
@@SerenitySueGraveyards there is so much Lichen on these headstones, is it because there is a lot of humidity there?
Thank you Sue! Such a beautiful area and so sad to see the stones sinking. Really loved this video! God bless.
Glad you enjoyed it Pamela 😊
Thanks for getting out in that weather Sue. Time has changed that beautiful place. Even so stones are sinking and broken we can witness Mother Nature's lesson that beauty even lies in these old forgotten places. Appreciate you.
That's beautiful Douglas, thank you
So beautiful & yet so very sad. 🥺🙏🏽🕊❤🇭🇳💜🫶🏽
I agree, this one made me sad 😔
What a lovely old cemetery & village
So sad to see it falling into decline
Thank you Sue for braving the rain
God Bless 🙏🏻
Thanks Lune Valley, it is sad
Sad to see in such disrepair...hopefully it can have a rebirth and be clean and returned back to it's glory. This is happening a lot now days.
Oh I hope so Me Me
I think it is lovely seeing how nature and the earth is reclaiming the land, That is how it should be, farmers in hundreds of years time will rediscover them and start archaeological digs like Time Team!
Boy Sue, Ireland is really so beautiful! The old cemeteries have a certain charm to them. Different from the United States. Love listening to your charming voice and accent when describing these old Graves. I always loved walking thru cemeteries myself and I am 64 years old. I find them very peaceful and always wonder what these people's stories were. Everyone lying in peace had a life and a story to tell. God Bless you Sue. ❤Stay safe and dry!
Thanks Karen ❤️
You might do research on Find A Grave. Sometimes fantastic stories are listed under the listing of the graves. If you research some of your own families cemeteries you will be shocked, amazed and intrigued by the histories of people buried there.
Very unsafe but it was beautiful.❤
Yes it was Susan love the villages that have this old quaint look to them but the little cemetery will soon dissappear at this rate
Thank you, Sue. It’s nice to see the greenery. I could just feel the history, there.
I am in very
cold climate with feet of snow still on the ground , and it is the first day of Spring, tomorrow. It feels like it will be glacier forever, here.
I love snow but only for a day or 2 wedont get it much. I feel for you as I know how expensive it's become to keep a home warm
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes, as I read and reply, outside it’s 13 degrees F, and the furnace is on.
Thank you Sue braving the weather to bring us the video it's been the same over here in England with the rain for days now. I loved the little thatched roof cottage! it is a shame the headstones are sinking my great grandparents are buried local to me and the headstone has sunk just like those. 💜
You are so welcome, it happens the casket breaks down over years, I'm not sure it can be stopped
Beautiful old cemetery, and now no longer forgotten because of you. Thank you Sue. And the music you had in the back ground was just so lovely and peaceful. Loved it all. Perfection. xx Teresa 🇦🇺💝
Thank you ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards ❤
Thanks for taking us in the rainy weather to this cemetary.
My pleasure Donna 🙏
Nice place id love to go look around old buildings as well
I love the tatch cottages
@@SerenitySueGraveyards yes that one was like mine but iv tiles, and lot of problems but im not going to let it get me down
It's just so sweet oh Hazel it's shocking the trouble your getting
Thank you sue for showing that beautiful old abandoned graveyard. It is such a shame that the Village is falling apart and I am sure that that new Cemetery will also have problems if it collapses.
Thanks Joel, yes what a shame
Sad to see this grave yard is so neglected. Mother nature is certainly taking its toll. Thanks for sharing!
Seems that's the way eventually
What a gorgeous cemetery. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it
Here in the Pacific Northwest, yeah, it was sunny yesterday, today it's cloudy, gonna rain any minute. Thanks for braving the wet for us, we sure do appreciate it!
Thanks Ann, bring on the Spring ❤️
So beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
Get me there Sue. I’ll clean them all. I hate to see growth on them. While some people think it’s lovely, the growth does so much damage to the stones. It’s such a dreamy scene….be careful!!!❤️
Thanks IrishAnnie ❤️
Old cemeteries like this have a eerie look but so beautiful..loved the little thatched cottage..thanks for braving the elements for us Sue..as always appreciated ❤
Thanks Maureen ❤️
Sorry I missed yr live Sue,I'm watching it now.Beautiful day hear in Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 so I've been taking advantage of it.Thank u for the live.Have a great wk.God bless.
Thanks so much Kim
Someone must be trimming the grass otherwise it would be very tall. Still needs some TLC. Lovely spot! 😊👍
It's a shame Hans, such beautiful stones beautiful village too
So Sad feeling about it.. Forgotten... 💕
It is Cathy, very sad 😔
I just wanted to say... Thank you! ⚘️🌻😊
Thanks so much Aneta ❤️
Thank you so much for all that you do and for the lovely music you use in the background. It’s so nice to have music at a volume that doesn’t drown out your voice.
Thanks Donna ❤️
lovely sue ,, x
Thanks Dean
Those stones have sunk far over the years loved the tour and the old village never seen a cottage with a thatched roof before we don't have them here , thanks for sharing ❤
Ahh we have them dotted around here, so beautiful
I wonder in such of an old graveyard who is taking care of the ones who have cut the grass around the grave and the headstones .
I can't imagine that they have family members left to care for them .
How sad but yet HOW BEAUITFUL.
Another FANTASTIC WALK THROUGH
HISTORY AND THE sights of Ireland
THANKS Sue.
Thanks Sandra, yes someone cuts the grass praise to them 🙌
That's so sad poor graveyard
It is Shelly ❤️
Sue! These stones are so beautiful. What history!! The carvings are so detailed. Thank you for this walk today! Sad it’s disappearing……is all that greenery garlic? So pretty.
We have a few amazing stone cutter from back in the day who created the most amazing stones. J Byrne being one of them. It's fascinating to see them still
It looks like snowdrops.
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I’ll look him up!!!
Really liking your channel Sue, a refreshing change to similar channels on utube..well done you.
Ahh thanks John appreciate it, are you Irish?? your name is telling me you are
@Serenity Sue My family hail from enniscorthy Sue, an my good wife's parents the Fitzgerald's are from Arklow, we I suppose are proxy Irish ha ha if that saying is correct..I love looking at the Countryside as you gad around filming.
A beautiful but sadly neglected old cemetery.
Yes, it sure is sad
So many very old graves..People born before Australia was settled in 1788..Thanks Sue
Very welcome Bailey
You always bring good videos keep. Up the good work sis.
Thank you so much 🤗
WOW Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for venturing out in the rain to show us beautiful cemetery and village! Actually it is all quite charming! Sorry I missed the chat. Went shopping with my sister…sales everywhere 😂. Thanks again!
Gooo Liz, I hope you treated yourself, you deserve it. Yes I love the villages that stay true to the old style. X x
What a strange location for a cemetery 😳😮😬🤔
It is, I presume it dates prior the little village
Thank you. So very sad.
It sure is Carol
Look at those beautiful homes. I often wonder what life would be like if my parents had not moved to the US.
Ireland was full of these tatched cottages whitewashed walls x
Interesting cematery
Thanks Louise ❤️
It's sad to see cemeteries like that.
It is Becki
The cemetery is in bad shape, but at least someone is cutting the grass. Unusual they'd put a cemetery on such hilly
ground.
Yes Don. I have no idea why they'd choose such an area, how hard was it to climb up the hill carrying a coffin
Hi Sue, very interesting and a fabulous display of lichens (something I studied at uni) there are some 2000 different types, many are to be found on gravestones. They grow incredibly slowly, some only half a millimetre a year. Different types are to be found on different stone and substrates. There is a society of lichenometry, you should join as you see so many 😂😂
Interesting Paul, wow I've seen so many different colours and types, it actually changes from County to county too
@@SerenitySueGraveyards yes, different types grow on different type of rock/stone used for headstones (of the 2000 types found in the U.K. over 600 have been identified on tombstones )Interestingly lichens were used in early dying of materials and especially kilts in Scotland years ago. Also if you’ve ever heard of a ph test ? The liquid we use to determine acidity/alkalinity (litmus test) is derived from a lichen 👍 The various colours of lichen are caused by the various compounds that they produce to deter herbivores etc and these were often used in early antibiotics 👍
@@paulsalmo7070 thanks
Thank you for your video Sue. This one left me feeling kind of sad to be honest. So many forgotten I guess.
I did too Cathi, really emotional after it
So sad to see so much abandoned. The cemetery makes me sad.
It is so sad for sure
Thanks
Thanks so much Helen, really appreciate it ❤
Thank you Sue of having a go with stone history - as you showed all the grave stones together l thought wow history on all those stones but not readable shame. Pity someone with love of history couldn’t buy the land and sort out the level in graveyard!
So true Sue 👍
Hey... My flash light is almost just like that... Got it sittin here charging... 🍃💘🍃
They are fantastic flashlights, we call them torches here, the best I've had
Seems like this cemetery is built on an old mound. Very interesting.
It is Jackie ❤️
Wow , a sinking cemetery. Unreal but beautiful and so sad.
Thanks ❤️
Such a shame it's sinking, those old headstones carry a lot of history.
It's sad Jean
That is a sad idea and who can help? Also loved St. PATRICKS SHOW. The music really sounds how we all feel bad.
It is sad, don't think anyone can😔
Beautiful but sad at same time.
It is Susan 💔
Lets hope. Someone buys the old houses and shops such a waste
It's a shame, so many abandoned buildings
There alot of channels of people who's job is to clean head stones amazing work they do.
I've seen them, they do amazing work
This was lovely in its own way. As my parents would say "it is all part of the old country." I don't think this cemetery was intentionally defaced; it is more of just the land as it were with Mother Nature and her weather. It could be a picture post card that some would find enchanting. I know I would. Thank you Sue! XO ♥️ ☘️🍀
Thanks Janet, very unfortunate for these graves but yes this happens ❤️
❤❤❤
Thanks Tracy ❤️
I think you are right Sue, this cemetery may be sinking. It is very sad. It is also sad to see a business close down. Do you know what happened? Great video, thank you very much Sue and GV.
Not sure why it closed seems closed for a long time now, yes I felt very sad leaving here
@Serenity Sue Thank you very much for getting back to me. Perhaps one day, another person or group will buy the property, and start another business. Is this town particularly poor, that you are aware of? Just curious.
Maybe in future they will reinforce the ground with gravel before placing the head stones. Not surprised with all the rain that things will sink down in the ground.
Thank you.
God bless
Great point
serenity if you read me I want to tell you that a Venezuelan in Spain admires you a lot. Greetings friend

Hi Peter, Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I love your videos
👍👍👍
Thank you
Nice grave yard. Very old & probably full of the people who built the village & surroundings. I saw the church for a quick glimpse of 3 minutes and 40 seconds in. Looks kinda fancy for the few seconds I could see it. Did you visit the church Sue?
I have done in the past but too wet that day, so true about what you said, they probably did build the village
@@SerenitySueGraveyards looks like the fortune family did a lot for the village. They probably owned that grave yard as well. They had the cement building & stuff for head stones & pub right next to the graveyard for a drink after.
❤️
At least they are sleeping in a beautiful peaceful place undisturbed.
So true x
Such a shame. Are any of the Fortune family still around? Blue car got a little close. Stay warm and dry❤️
I'm not sure of that Brenda, thank you x
It's sad to think that this is all there is to our existence. Falling headstones, sinking ground and not a person to care. I believe in reincarnation and am praying to God that this is my last journey. It hasn't been a fun one. To think you're buried and that's it. No one left to remember you. Life is disappointing.
I understand Sandra x x
What an old , yet mystical cemetary. RIP to all those buried there. Thanx Sue for getting out in the wet weather to show us this marvelous video, and please pray for America today someone evil tried to kill our former President Trump. He is OK, God himself saved him. Love you and GV. So much can happen so fast.😇💖😊❤
I just saw this on the news, terrible
An ìnteresting little place and the first thing I notice is how you need to walk up steps as the burial level is a lot higher than road level. I found it very strange how the burials are crammed on a little uneven hill, I looked on Google earth and there are flat fields all around so why set up a grave yard on a hill that would causes all sorts of problems for the grave diggers🤔 its not very practicle.
These is also my conspiratorial thoughts on these raised grave yards. Calton burial grounds are very similar the burial area is a lot higher than the road and its very uneven.
I have go a lot from this video thanks sue!
Good idea to look up on Google maps, yes it sure is a strange little place, how they were able to bury people here, I just don't know
Kind of creepy but it has character 👍
It sure does
I'd love that thatched cottage.
Me too, we have lots here in Ireland still
@@SerenitySueGraveyards There's only one by me , it's been here from when it was a village, all the other cottages got knocked down, and thing's have been built up around it, I'm glad that one survived .
Her accent is awesome im from USA
Thanks, its the ould Irish brogue
@Serenity Sue awesome, yeah, im from the state of Oklahoma. It's awesome hearing other accents.
Hope you can get back again sue I had to stop filming this week damn rain
Ahh it's terrible, we went today got a beautiful place filmed and it rained again so once again we are wet
@Serenity Sue yes managed to get 2 videos in but rain stopped play not a good week this week either but I need to go back to St Breock Churchyard again as I only done half of it sue answer me this how the hell did they bury bodies on a steep hill side that's difficult digging its that steep I'm going to have a job to walk down and record why would they have done thst in victorian times literally on a hill
It's crazy Shaun, I mean how do you carry a coffin up a hill like that. They certainly chose the hard way. Your doing a great job with your videos
@Serenity Sue sue there's hundreds of them I mean how and why do you build a church in a pit graves on each hillside in the 1800s why what was the thinking of thst time
Damn
If I had the money I would buy all of that
Oh me too
It humbles you to know it's dust to dust. I pray for hThise you read names.
Thanks Carol
makes you wonder how many headstones are actually buried under ground to many to count i would think
Yes I'm sure many, how they buried their loved ones in these steep hilly places I just don't know
✨🏴✨🥰✨👍✨♥️✨🤗✨.
📺📺📺🎈🎈🎈💫💫💫
Thanks ❤️
That is a shame.
It is Arleen ❤️
❤🇺🇸
It’s very very normal especially if it’s very old
Sad though, very sad
@@SerenitySueGraveyards it is but you need to remember it’s going to happen to us all at some point
Oh I know but if I can remember people here, hopefully someone will remember us too
As one would expect.
Yes
What is the story of the lichen covered headstone? Mary of Magdalene , mentioned on the stone? I’m on my tiny phone looking. Maybe about the crucifixion also? I see the other headstone with Jesus on the beautiful headstone.
It's the scene from the crucifixion, I find a lot of the 1700s have them, so our lord on the cross, some have soldiers, ladders coins and even roosters. All depicting the crucifixion. That stone had Mary the virgin and Mary Magdalene
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Very beautiful and it’s so good to see all three of them on the headstones. They are of Protestant Faith, then?
One day they will be all gone. But God knows where each one is😢
I know, it also makes me think...we too will be forgotten
Another hundred years or so, and most will be gone back into the earth.
Sad but true Steve
Do you add these to find a grave ?
I don't have time to unfortunately
you need a pair of wellies up to your knees,,, I thought the cemetery is pretty good shape actually ,, the grass needs a bit of trimming but other wise those old head stones probably fall apart trying to sit them erect
Oh yes, no way could you touch them now
Is this St Adamans ?
No it's Screen Geraldine
@Serenity Sue oh I was thinking Skreen in sligo Thanks Sue xxx
Power Wash the stones
That would destroy them
I know some channels have groups who have some kind of cleaning agent and a brush would do wonders to give them the first clean in centuries🙂.
@Timothy Marshall unfortunately here we are not allowed to touch stones, unless family or have families permission, that's kind of hard to do, tracing back so far
You do like your cast iron railings dont you sue xxx
Just love them Tom, so beautiful
Thanks Sue😊, it's a shame about the graveyard as you said so much history in there 🪦 🪦🪦 it's located in such an unusual spot aswel .
It is Nicola, I'm used to seeing such old graves this place however made me feel saddened
