But he got stuck in the range where you are too far away to touch the wall at the end of a recovery, but too close to take another stroke. That's what happened. It's often very difficult to prevent this, as you need to predict where in your stroke you will be once you're at the wall. Hence why this kind of thing happens even to the pros. You never want to be gliding unless you're doing an underwater. Gliding on the surface of the water just slows you down.

Why wasn't Dressel disqualified? He got completely submerged at the finish. If it was backstroke or freestyle, he would, I thought buttefly has the same rule (unlike breaststroke, where submerging is permitted because dolphin kicks aren't)
OK, I found there is a difference Freestyle, Backstroke rule after 15m: Some part of the swimmer must break the surface of the water throughout the race Butterfly rule after 15m: The swimmer must remain on the surface until the next turn or finish. So it's different with Butterfly 😁
