I saw a video that stated it takes the average person 10,000 hours to master their craft. They toured extensively in the 70's. They paid their dues. This was them being masters of a craft and having the time of their lives. They are legends
I think the vocals are superb here actually - singing over such a quiet sounding backing track really highlights how hard Daryl's singing and carrying the performance. Yeah he goes off a bit here and there, but that's just normal LIVE stuff with no cheating auto-tune like singers nowadays. What a great pair of talented guys! (That audience should have buggered off home to play chess if they wanted to just sit like statues and stare!)
No wonder why they were on fire in the 80's. Music, live voice, projection, stage presence, musicians, they had it all. The best duo by far. Hall & Oates
John Oates was killing it with the moves. And by the way..that audience should be ashamed of themselves. They were sitting there like they had something better else to do. Holy shit.
This performance is from The American Music Awards in 1985. I remember when I was a 13 year old kid watching this.Right after this show,Michael Jackson,Lionel Ritchie,Stevie Wonder and Quencie Jones started USA for Africa.
@@viewtube6eBack then it was respectful to sit and listen to performers, not get up and dance. Nowadays awards shows are concerts. Back then the seats were filled with singers, industry execs, and seat fillers. Now it’s mainly rich fans screaming the whole time.
This performance was from ABC's American Music Awards January 28, 1985...Hall and Oates won category of Favorite Pop/Rock Band (Duo or Group)...and yes, Prince was there in that weird tunic garb and his famous "life is an adventure" acceptance speech. That crowd was QUITE lame for not rocking it out during that performance, backing track or not!
@3:20 it's the best part of the record and this live performance. This whale/scream run blew me away the first time hearing this song on the radio. The lyrics are very difficult for other to sing.
Shaky start but then Daryl just GOES OFF. He's mesmerizing to watch and i love everything he played around with vocally on this version. And he was dressed to impress. Gorgeous visually and audibly.
I remember this American music awards early 85 I think this was prince’s big night hall and Oates was the first performance they should have let them play live they could do it they were a great band
Love Hall and Oates forever my favorites, they are both gorgeous, even old, they still got it!! Met Daryl's parents twice at their concerts. Wonderful people!! Saw John's dad but he was across the other side. He was cute too. Lol. We're talking 35 yrs ago, where did time go. ❤John and Daryl forever.! ❤❤❤😘😘💋🌟🌟💋
I was dating a beautiful young lady 1985 - She was the one & if fate had not stuck its nose I believe we could have got spliced - But back to what I was writing... Yeah back in 1985 PB got me a 12" copy of this great H&O song & I still have that baby bit crackly but other wise in perfect condition ! - Instead of playing the 12" now - I managed to get a hold of a Big Bang Boom CD with the 12" ver on it - So that gets played now instead of my Gift ...Which I will hold on to forever to remind me what should have been !!! - Great vid seeing how it was played on its release back in 1985 - Thankyou !

Yep, they sat there like figures of stone. Expressionless, sitting SO close like sardines in a can, without any oil or lubrication. Just dry eyed and motionless. They may have had difficulty even getting outta their narrow seats, being there 4 sooo long. What a pity couldn't even head nod to the beat, couldn't git out of their seats. Had I been in the band ( as tight and on point and talented and artistic as they were, putting on a 5star ultra class show. That's the problem when it's not a proper 'Hall & Oates' concert, if the room was full of true fans they would all be up dancing and singing. The acoustics didn't sound too great either. Still a great perfomance though...

Not MANY Artists Can Perform Live and Sing and Sound Like They Do On Track. Hall & Oates Are True Talents. SOOOO Legendary!!
I agree with everything you just wrote.

Music, live voice, projection, stage presence, musicians, they had it all.
The best duo by far. Hall & Oates
Performers don't come this calibre anymore.
L o v e😎😘
These guys just kicked ass all throught the 80's. Thank God for real musicians and talent : )))
The best singing voice of his generation.
daryl hall has the most passionate pop voice in music history.
Ben Wolf agreed. Actually his whole body gets into it
Rob Erickson bro, absolutely.

Superb performance! Ballsy and so avant-garde stylish the crowd were too shocked to understand its brilliance!
I absolutely love this song & Daryl's dancing❤
The voice !!!!
The voice, the song writer, the best ever!!!
Amen. Best in the business.
How can the audience not be dancing to that??!!??
The vibe from the audience was so dead. They didnt deserve that lame energy. Did they forget they were at the MUSIC awards?
They were ALL pros at an awards show…rarely do artists feel out for other artists…

GREAT VERSion! my faovirte H&O song ever!
Great performance of one of the best songs. Love the 80s hair and Daryl and John's moves. Thanks for posting.
They rocked the house, turned it out and burned it out without a doubt.
These guys are a beast ! Meaning one of the best groups ever .he is so on point ..they were gangter .in a wonderful way !
Om gosh the talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even with the prerecoded music, he can still sing well...no autotune, no lipsyncing, no bullshit...Justin Timberlake, THIS IS HOW ITS DONE!!!! :)
This is my fav song by them!!!!
Mine also
Besides loving Daryl's soulful voice I love to see him bust out those dance moves on stage. My man got soul all through his body.
That sound system is terrìble - love this song 1985 was a great year ! -
thanks for sharing
Oh my God !!!! What a performance !!!! Daryl is the best !!!! 😍❤️💐

WOW! He can really sing live. Crowd is horrific. Dance of the living dead

80's perfection.
Big hair, big tunes, 80s, the decade that was a hairspray manufacturers wet dream😂😂😂😂
first time I notice this, but John Oates looks like Prince sometimes
Yes he does
Yip, was thinking the same thing!
I was just about to post that!!!! 😂 so wonderful I love his little dancing 🕺
Freddie Mercury
Fun to see them again in 1985. Sorry 😞 that time passes so quickly. 💘
That's a hard song to sing live but Daryl killed it. Even singing to zombies 🧟♀️ in the crowd. Lol
I LOVE DARYL
how the hell do you stay seated during a performance like this?
Exactly...so boring people...Daryl is so charismatic...and so hot ;) ♥
Weird crowd
I've been wondering the same and I think it's because none of them are actually playing their instruments.
Harry Chalcraft Nah. It’s because it’s an award show full of fat cat execs & other performers. And they’re not known for being real lively. Haha.
I have seen them in concert at the Beacon theater. No way do you sit in their concert
