    The Original strat that Cliff bought to Hank was a 59 model with gold hardware and highly figured birdseye maple neck. Cliff had that painted white and Bruce got it from Cliff in the late 70s (you can see him play it at the concerts in the early 80s). In 1983 Bruce had it sprayed red again, though not the correct fiesta red (it has a slight blue-ish tint today). The guitar featured on this video is the guitar that Hank bought in Paris in France in 1981. It is a 1958 model. This is the guitar Hank used in the 80s until he got Custom Shop Signature models in late 80s, early 90s. He now has 3 Custom Shop strats. They are based around the 58 and 59 with a slightly chunkier neck (to avoid strings being dragged of the fretboard so easily), 22 frets, graphite nut and locking keys. One of his custom shops has piezo pickup to emulate acoustic guitars (he uses it on tunes as Sasha live). The concert Together from 1984 has Hank using this guitar (the '58) and Bruce uses the one that Cliff bought for Hank in 1959. (thats Bruces main guitar now and has been since the early 80s). In the 70s and after his Burns were stolen in Paris, Hank bought a 68 Stratocaster that was white with tortoiseshell pickugard (same as his Burns). This was later painted black and had gold hardware fitted and went through a lot of modifications (at some point it had Gibson humbucker). The picups it had eventually was Seymour Duncan SSL1 (middle and neck) and DiMarzio FS-1 bridge. This was also the pickups on Hanks Signature Models in the early and mid 90s. He later switched to Kinmans.

    We all wanted a Fiesta Red Strat, the original ones are now highly

      If you listen to the very early shadows recordings the sound was unique, It is very much of that time & will remain so. They were a bit raw as it was analogue, that adds to the validation

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape 3 года назад +1

      @@malcolmlyndsell5009 Some of the early recordings were made with other guitars than the Strat, hence the difference in sound, plus the technology of the time put it's own stamp on the end result.
      Without the infamous echo box which was analog tape based, Hank would never have developed his unique sound.

      @Matt y I think Relic guitars are a personal choice and have only become available in recent years.
      A 1958 Strat would have a Nitro Cellulose finish that would wear down with playing, todays guitars have a much tougher Poly clear coat which
      might go dull, but won't wear through playing.
      The only way to replicate a worn Nitro finish is to use techniques to
      replicate a road worn guitar.
      I don't want a brand new worn guitar.
      As for Fenders Custom Shop quality, it is not always that good.
      I ordered a Bonnie Raitt Custom Shop Strat, waited a very long time
      for it to arrive in very poor condition, the finish had numerous fine scratches, a ding in the headstock, all the trem screw heads were chewed up, i rejected it on the spot, even the dealer was shocked.

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape 3 года назад

      @Matt y Fender Strats have always been hit and miss, but when you find a better than average sample, no other guitar makes you want to play it.
      I bought a mint unplayed USA 90's Strat in Candy Apple Red off ebay a few years ago, i was very lucky to be the only bidder, the seller had spent months looking for a perfect sample to keep as an investment.
      I paid £600 ( approx $800) for it, todays USA models are more than double that price.
      Unless you are prepared to pay Suhr or PRS USA prices, quality is always going to be down to finding that perfect sample

    I thought Hanks guitar had gold hardware? I have a 56 Fiesta red custom shop reissue with the gold hardware and I believe hank bought three 56 custom shop reissue strats at one stage and had them all with different gauge strings on them. As thousands of guitarists Hank was the reason I started playing and I've had a wonderful semi professional career for the last 55 years. I met my wife while out playing so it's all Hanks fault lol.

    • @robthorpe5388

      Hank’s original Strat had gold hardware. He then switched to a 60s with rosewood fingerboard and ‘silver’ hardware. He then switched to Burns before returning to a black Strat in the 70s. In the early-mid 80s he switched back to a Fiesta red Strat: that’s this one. It’s the guitar he played at Jean-Michel Jarre’s ‘88 London concert, the Cliff and the Shads ‘84 shows, and when he guested with Dire Straits at Wembley in ‘85. It was his main guitar until he got the Fender Signature (around 1999) which has gold hardware like the first one.

    • @blueshadow7385
      @blueshadow7385 3 года назад +1

      Hanks first Stratocaster (that Bruce now has) was a 1959 model with gold hardware and highly figured birdseye mpl neck. As Rob mentions, after that he switched to a rosewood strat and after that the Burns, and in the 70s a sunburst 69 model that was later painted black and went through a myriad of upgrades and changes. He bought a 1958 model in a shop in Paris in 1981 (the one that is featured here) and that was the guitar he used throughout the 80s. That one did not have gold hardware nor highly figured neck (apart from late 80s when he switched the neck to a Giffin, but it was later switched back after the original neck was restored). In early 90s UK distributor Arbiter cooperated with Hank creating the Signature Strat. That was a guitar was based on the Strat Plus featuring the new American Standard bridge system, a bit fatter neck in higly figured AAA birdseye and 22 frets (the 50s models have 21), unlike the vintage models it was also sprayed using Polyurethane. So much more of a "modern" strat than an old one. The pickups were Seymour Duncan SSL1 Middle and Neck, and DiMarzio FS1 Bridge. It also had a push / pull know (like the Burns) to give possibilities for 2 more pickup positions (Neck & Bridge and All). He later got two more from the Custom shop. These had the vintage bridge. One had Piezo system for accousting guitar sound, as you can see when he plays Sasha live. They have been equipped with different pickups. Most of the time Kinmans. Its true that he uses different gauges of strings. 0.11-0.49 for "modern Stuff" and thicker strings (0.12 or 0.13) for older stuff. All of them also had black Teflon nut (as you can see he has also fitted on his old 58 in this video). He also started using the "easy mute" tremolo arm. The 56 Custom shop reissue Strats are awesome instruments (in many ways the best you can get) but they are not very simmilar to Hanks newer strats. They are more similar to his original 1959 model that he used for the Apache recording.

Cliff, several years later, then gave it to Bruce. They (Hank, Bruce and Cliff) all joke about being the rightful owners (or not), but they all know the truth. And I suspect Ben does too.
