Kyle, you do an excellent job. You really care about your work and it shows. You take the time to show your mistakes and how you correct them. Your editing is excellent and your cadence is refreshing from the norm here on RUclips. Keep it up, your work doesn't go unnoticed.
I like that they put "Golden, Colorado, U.S.A, EARTH".. I was confused for a minute and thought it was the U.S.A of Jupiter.. Another great video. Thank you!
Nice job. I've got a bunch of knives I don't have the experience and skill to do justice to sharpening so I get them out and admire them and then use the more modest ones I'm willing to inflict my current so-so sharpening skills on. I can get a knife sharp but it ain't always pretty. 😀I know it's a matter of trial and error so I plug away at it and know the day will come. Sure helps watching people do it right. A word to people in my situation: Get a loupe or magnifier that gives you a better look at your actual edge. You'll see convexing, having different planes because you're not consistent with the angle, changing bevel angles, all sorts of funky stuff. It's humbling but you need to know. Then you can experiment and get closer, and that's what it's all about. Start with thinner blades and a good coarse stone. The fewer passes, the less chance to introduce error. Other than that, practice.
I started sharpening on stones in my 20’s luckily I had cheaper knives back then. Old timers and care and such. But it took me a while to get the angle just right and muscle memory to do it’s thing. All my knives now are hair popping sharp. It’s therapeutic for me. I love sharpening knives. I use diamond stones a lot now. It just makes it quicker. But for polishing the edge ya definitely need stones to do that. Good job buddy.
I'm glad to hear that im not the only person that likes adding a sharpening choil to my spydercos. I do it to all of my new spydercos and usually soften up the edges of the spyderhole if it's from Japan lol
Another very beautiful job! I just received my 320 grit Shapton blue/black stone today to go along with my 500, 1000 & 4000 grit glass stones. I have really learned a lot by watching you. Thanks, Man & God bless you & yours.
I was given a Spiderco Paramilitary 2 with the digital camo scales yesterday. Amazing knife. Looks like they’re going with S45VN steel now. Kyle, keep up the good work!
Great tutorial, Kyle. Gives me some inspiration for when my Paramilitary 2 gets dull, though I'll probably revert to the Edge Pro! Good tip about dealing with the area of the heel of the blade since this model seems to thicken up slightly at the heel which can lead to recurving over time as you pointed out. Thanks again for the narrative while you sharpen--it really helps explain what you are feeling and the the thought process going on, which in turns provides some valuable information for the rest of us!
Very nice, great explanation of the process. I'm finally getting the confidence to experiment with my freehand technique knowing that if I mess up it can be fixed. In the beginning I was so afraid to mess up it was debilitating. Your skill is apparent.
I like your "reflection" test. In introducing that concept, I flip to the opposite side of the blade, the 'spine', to show them the reflection on the spine. Otherwise, people seem confused by a reflection on the edge. I always wait for your newest release. Never disappointed. Thanks.
That’s a great tip for all us hobbyists. Watch the stone when you’re sharpening, not the camera in the ceiling. Had a few sessions on the Shapton Glass 1000 (on Kyles recommendation 👍🏼) and it’s really a beauty. Love it! Noticed though when reading up on it, its a 1000 mesh, which is something like 1300 grit. The shapton numbers are mesh and micron size. The hardness of the stone makes it so effective and it feels it’ll last forever.
For Spyderco folding knives with a "racasso" protruding...I agree...don't add a choil However, I DO like blades with a choil before the handle to allow for easy of sharpening from the tip to the "base"...close to the handle as possible. Basically the full length of the cutting edge. Whether or not you actually use the full length of a glade to cut or not. I prefer Syderco blades on knives like the Yojinbo or Spyderchef....
Truly a pleasure to watch , and learn from a master! My dream knife. Currently own. Para3 razor sharp in CPM S45VN. Following now! Gunny USMC FORCE RECON BLTN.RET.
Hi Kyle. I'm just starting a small sharpening buissnes and I was just wondering. How much do you charge per knife?? If you are eilling to say it it would help a lot. Thanks👍👍
I'm guessing but that depends on how good you are. How big the knife is, how bad the cutting edge is and many other factors. Charge what you think your worth
Love these spidercos and benchmades for the superior slicey blades . They’re all about the same properly treated on all knives but these ones …it’s a thing for spyderco to go all out on the blade and leave the rest ok with the g10;or they can be modded and totally changes these spydercos and benchmades and Demko s
Kyle, the fact that you liked the wear on the pocket clip tells us you are a user and not a knife guy thar doesn't use his knives. Very nice. And of course besides the back page deals every week, what other use is there for the Canadian Tire flyer 😃 Man, you made that knife ready for edc, I loved the video and the end result !! I have put more divots in my stones like that too. What is the proper spelling of that honing stone ? I think Santa might come early 🤔 Great video brother . Give your household hugs and kisses from Ontario 👍
I have no shelf queens, Chris! All working knives, maybe too hard some times! The dressing stone is called a 'nagura'. Thanks for the love, brother! Hope you're all doing well up there. Everyone safe and happy?
@@kyle_noseworthy oh man, thanks Kyle for the name of that stone !!! I used to have a few shelf queens too, but not anymore. I like using them too much . Kyle you have been putting out awesome content lately . Your workmanship is next level . Just AWESOME 👌 Everyone hanging in here so far. Did you get any effects of that weather ? Was praying for you and yours during the whole event 🙏
Greeeat stuff laddie!! While I continue to be inspired and schooled by your excellent vids Kyle, I do have a couple of questions: 1. What is your source for all the stones and equipment you use? 2. While I appreciate the value and necessity of your sharpening process….. when you have the luxury of applying it in the comfort of your shop, what tools or process can you recommend for those occasions that one must sharpen in the hunting field? Thank you much indeed!!
If it's the same Nagura that I have I believe it's 600 grit, but you can purchase higher grit ones as well. It does prevent you from having to flatten as often in my experience.
A lot of people dislike sharpening s30v I however find golden spydie done up s30v to be a fabulous sharpening steel. It responds of so well to a gritomatic Sic benchstones. I really take s30v to diamond or cbn unless it's a heavy reprofile or damage I'm correcting. Sic based abrasive stones and s30v is a match made in heaven. Yeah whoever was doing the sharpenings on it definitely thru some recurve in the blade because they was scared to sharpen up to the plunge because of the typical little unsharpened nub at the plunge spyderco always leaves... I really dont suggest doing a sharpening notch, I simply suggest sharpening up to the plunge to get that little nub out... with spyderco doing a straight plunge it buts up to the side of the stone perfectly so no need for a notch.
I have never been good at sharpening. I just bought a set of three diamond stones of varying grits. I have a Paramilitary 2. Do you think that I can sharpen it with the diamond stones I bought?
Just found you channel and I've been watching some videos, and there's a video you did a few years ago, "Absolute Peak Whetstone Knife Sharpener Kit" and wanted to know if you'd still recommend this kit? I've never used Whetstones, my best stone is a Spyderco Medium Grit ceramic, thinking about getting the fine grit version too. On course stones, I've always heard the cheaper the better on those. Any thoughts? Oh, and I also have a Smith's stone, the Lansky Sharpening kit, but I like working with stones better, just still trying to get efficient.
s30v is highly under rated steel. As you can see it sharpens up just fine on modern splash and go stones made from white alumina. The people who obsess over "edge retention" don't know how to sharpen and are afraid to learn. Thats my opinion.
Love it. It's like ASMR. Question for you... Is sharpening profitable enough to thrive on, or is it just something you kind of enjoy? I've become notorious among my knife friends for putting crazy mirror edges on my knives. I've had a few posts on reddit get upvoted into the thousands, and have had people reach out asking how much I would charge for a mirror job. Honestly, depending on how bad a secondary bevel is or how much I need to reprofile, it can take me as long as 2 hours going up to 200k grit to get my insane mirrors. All that being said, I could barely justify doing the work for $50 of raw profit. Assuming I force the client to pay for shipping both ways, I couldn't (wouldn't) do a mirror for any less than $50, which honestly just feels like I'm ripping someone off. Do you sharpen as a "side gig", or have you established some other sort of model? I've also considered doing working edges since they take substantially less time and effort.
Something I've learned as a craftsman and knife sharpener is that you need to charge what you're worth, and if someone thinks that price is too expensive, someone else will come along. I love the quote of a famous wicker chair craftsman, "The chairs are expensive, and if people think they're too expensive, they'll stay expensive." There is no glory or joy in cheaping out your work for the benefit of people who don't understand why you charge what you charge. 👊
I’ve blasted them with a hose outside occasionally to really drive out everything that gets stuck in a stone . It can’t be seen but I can see a difference on the white ceramic . You know it can get a film of shiny metal ? Total neglect 😮
Nice job! I need to sharpen the black bake apple but I don’t want to make it worse. I’ve been using it though and with use comes the need for a refresh. Think I will work to improve my skill level which is nowhere near your before I tackle that. Just the smallest change in angle on the stone will waste time and effort. It’s an art for sure.
Kyle, you do an excellent job. You really care about your work and it shows. You take the time to show your mistakes and how you correct them. Your editing is excellent and your cadence is refreshing from the norm here on RUclips. Keep it up, your work doesn't go unnoticed.

I'm just starting to learn to sharpen. Great Video. Thank you ❤
Thank you for the great video 🙂

PM2 and most EDC are usually around 17-20 degrees I believe

The good ol trustworthy apex stone 👍
I really love youre Videos especially the whetstone sharpening videos, and this is the first time you say the grit on the shapton 320 right
Well done! What grit is the dressing stone? Does that lessen the need to flaten the stone?
If it's the same Nagura that I have I believe it's 600 grit, but you can purchase higher grit ones as well. It does prevent you from having to flatten as often in my experience.

Would you be able to show an example of a "sharpening notch" as you mentioned, in one of your future videos?
Kyle what stones would you recommend to a beginner to get a razor edge. I’ve already got a nice strop.
Awesome

Are you going to call the person and recommend a small half circle choil . Sure would like something you would do 😊
Hi Kyle I’m wondering do you make custom knives for people?
Would love to send you 3 of my old Rapala fillet knives, they are in very bad shape and could use a sharpen.
s30v is highly under rated steel. As you can see it sharpens up just fine on modern splash and go stones made from white alumina. The people who obsess over "edge retention" don't know how to sharpen and are afraid to learn. Thats my opinion.

I prefer Shaman. Pm2 is too thin for my liking
FYI Paramilitary 2 doesn't come with a sharpening choil, so it's a good thing you didn't drill one into the blade without the customer's permission.
