Today, this story might be recorded differently - as an episode of “Snapped.”
I just love how they harmonize. It sends chills down my spine.
There's a musical/song-cycle called "Ghost Quartet" which has a very interesting take on this story. This is a wonderful rendition btw

Well that was weird. I know this song very well, I know at least seven or eight versions of, but I've never heard it start with two girls from County Clare. Which seems a shame, seeing as I am FROM County Clare. I like it.
Yes I noticed the same thing with this version. I am from California but my great-grandparents came from county cork, And as a musician I pay attention to many types of music including folk from all parts of the world. One of my old bands would cover this song as well as Mattie grows which has many versions itself. It's just the sort of thing that happens when songs are passed down through centuries.

One of my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs.
I remember singing this in music class in grade 4 or 5 and I had nightmares about it for weeks after. (Doesn't stop me from liking it)

This entire soundtrack is a JOY to listen to, but this track is one of the very best. Old ballad sung acappella to perfection. Thank you SO much for posting. That IS a shame. It showed how the mountains kept the music in it's true, purer state due to the isolation of the people. It's one of my favorite movies. You are welcome & stop by anytime. I have been a fan of this movie since it first came out. This is my favorite song on the soundtrack - so haunting. I had the cd but lost it and forgot this is where the song was from since you don't hear much of it in the movie. Glad I found it again. Love Gillian and David's version.

I love variations on the murder ballad "The Twa Sisters." Others include "The Two Sisters" by Clannad (Sing aye dumb, sing aye day/The boys were born for me) and "The Bonny Swans" (A hey ho bonny o/The swans swim so bonny o) by Loreena McKennitt and another common title is "Binnorie" (Binnorie, Binnorie, by the bonny mill dams of Binnorie) and "The Cruel Sister" (Lay the bent to the bonnie broom/Fa la la la la la la la la la.)
And yes, "murder ballad" is an actual genre of traditional music.

And all those crazy English Scots Irish came to the Appalachians and brought these murder ballads with them. Many songs done in bluegrass are almost word for word from their cousins overseas; Pretty Polly, Knoxville Girl, Barbara Allen. Somebody's always getting a sword run through them or thrown in a river:)

Ah, a classic traditional song. Truly the best version of this song is a cappella. Personally, I prefer this version over the "Her Story" version. :)

Best version ever: Crooked Still, look it up. They leave out certain verses and it has the effect of making the story more mysterious, and the instrumental accompaniment really suits the melody perfectly. Plus: it is sung by Aoife O'Donovan and she has this silky voice which makes it all even more chilling..

+MyMoppet52 Hi! Geek Remix is actually a youtube channel run by two women who record videos of them playing videos and discussing them. They played a game called "Her Story" that included a cover of this song. I'm glad they did -- that's where I heard it for the first time as well, and I've listened to so many versions now!

The way my friend and I almost sang this for our 6th grade talent show... A song about a girl murdering her sister and then said sister's body being turned into a fiddle. 😂

Todd A It's one of my favorites also. I saw the Dead back in 68 when no one in my area had heard of them. I was lucky enough to be entering a venue when Grisman was entering. They had an idiot at the gate & she wasn't letting him in. I jumped in & showed her my program, stating "HE IS THE MAIN ACT TONIGHT!" I'm sure he thought I was a total fool...but I'm a total fan. Stumbled across this song by Peggy Seeger and at first listen I knew it was going to be a favorite, it is and I play it almost every day. Can't decide which is the better version, Peggy or Gillian? Both are so good. Maybe Emmylou has a version ... that should settle if!

None less that Jerry Garcia and David Grisman recorded this as well. I've listened to this recording hundreds of times, and it's just now occurring to me that there are 3 voices in there. David Steele is the 3rd voice according to wiki

@TheCaraandfriends Well, it's about jealousy, murder, and getting caught...and it was a sister that murdered her sis. This is a song that has many differernt versions (even Grateful Dead) starting back 100's of years ago in Europe. I have another version, w/another name on my site. I'll see if I can get it. A Steam Summer sale brought me to 'Her Story', I was blown away by the song...which brought me here. I think the lady in 'Her Story" did it better.

+SassyMintyPanda Many old songs have a demon or magical image used. In this the fiddler made a fiddle out of her bones, but it magically told everyone of the murder - The Dreadful Wind and Rain. It told all of her murder. If you wish, comment back & I can send you old songs with magical mentions in them.

This originated in The Child Ballads, so it is a very old ballad. I'm sending a link. You don't have to listen. I've known it as The House Carpenter, but it's called The Demon Lover. It is very old also. It is about a woman who married someone after her true love left. Then her true love came back... If you listen, I hope you enjoy. It is dark also.
