Matt, what batter/ snare side head do you suggest for a High School Band using the first(Old) Pearl FFX marching snare?? I'm reworking all of our drumline equipment and am trying to give the kids the best sound I can. I grew up using the "Remo round dot" head for batter and a clear on snare side but, that was 30 years ago....LOL Does Remo have anything new that's better?? It's been so long since I was in the know- Remo must have better heads by now. Thanks for the help! I used your videos to teach the kids how to tune correctly! I learned this way and now the kids are excited to tune and are taking better care of their drums! Again, Thank You for the knowledge and the lack of BS!!!!!!!! You get to the point in a precise manner!!! Great videos- make more, Please!!!
if you're looking fore a more modern sound then use a remo black max for batter side, and one of the falams series for snare side. if you want a more "classic" snare sound then go for a mylar head like the ambassador on the snare side.
I watched this tuning video i thank you so much for doing this video I have a marching snare my own and i have a high tention drum key and it works so this helped me so much
I believe it’s known as a dual snare mechanism, in which both the batter and resonator heads have snares, instead of just the resonator head having snares. (the batter head is the playing surface/top head, and the resonator head is the bottom head)
The Rim? If that's the case, you're probably not tightening the lugs evenly. I'm new to tuning and have NEVER broke a rim. Go to your local drum shop; they should be able to teach you how to properly tune a drum. :)
Does anyone know if this particular drumhead (a Remo Ebony) would sound right if put on a traditional marching snare, as opposed to a high tension? For example, would this drumhead be suitable for a Premier 1049-S Traditional Marching Snare?
If the drum is as described, you would break the tension rods due to their inability to hold enough tension to get the head tight enough to play on. You have to consider that you are tightening up strands of carbon fiber to a playing tension.
You can only get it if you have chrome rims - pearls don't have them, some yamahas don't have them, mapex does, and dynasty does. Nevr-Dull polish works really well if you put in some time.
You can actually buy the pearl chome hardware on steveweissmusic.com ...dynasty call the customer service ( sales ) ... Yamaha call the customer service ( sales ) mapex call the customer service ( sales )
Drumhead selection and tuning play a very large part in the sound, feel and durability of the drum but yes every element of the drum itself also contributes to the overall quality of every aspect of the experience.
suckmaballz25 What are you talking about, dipshit? I was talking about the snares that are under the TOP snare head. Stop being so negative. I am fully aware that there are snares under the bottom head. I'm not a fucking imbecile.
Question? i was just wondering, i have my Pearl Maple CarbonCore FFX Snare Drum Black Silver Burst two weeks ago and then i keep tuning to get the better sound just like your drum the way it sound. but i couldn't get that kind of sound and i have a Evans Hybrid-Soft Marching Snare Drum Batter Head Black.. I have no idea how to get that kind of sound of my snare drum. I already tighten very hard but still different... do you think you can give me an idea?
Sorry for a late reply. The balck Evans hybrid heads are different. They are thinner and sound closer to Mylar. If you want his sound. Purchase a kevlar mead. The grey and white Evans hybrids are the same, or the black and whie max by remo are the same
warheads143 What you should try is tuning the bottom side of the drum. That is where your snare resonance and characteristics come from. The tighter the bottom head, the better the snare will sound.
can someone recomend me a good snare drum to buy?? I bought a fame one and now I regreat, can't get that crisp sound and can't tune the snares either... help pleaseee
I your on a budget you can get the pearl 14 by 12 competitor series. If you want something little better you could get the 14 by 12 pearl championship series. Yamaha sfz snares are also really good
Can anyone help me with this, I have a yamaha exactly like that but in a blue forest color and I want to mount it onto one of those stands but dont have the thing to connect it to the stand. Does anyone know what they are called or where I could buy one?
does the horizontal adjustment affect the snare sound. our snares sound more like toms when the snare is on. could it be backs it's too tight or the bottom head tuning?
Yes! It affects the tuning in a huge way. The snares need to be completed flat to the head. Once you crank them past level, they are ruined forever. You will never get them flat again. They will be bent and you can't straighten them again. You'll need a new set of guts.
+Jason Parker I'm not sure if my school snares matter or not but the bottom head is a clear gridded head rather than a Standard clear head with no grids on it which I think affects it because we've done almost everything to get back that snare sound but it's not there. it barely sounds like a snare when it's on. you can hears it a tiny bit.
+antonio fiorentino hmmmm... Sounds like you should start with a standard clear head and go from there. Double check to make sure the snares a perfectly level. Start with the snares just barely off the head. Tap on the edge of the snares and lower them with the vertical adjustment knob until the "tapping" sound goes dull. Do that on both sides. Flip the drum over and tighten the snares until you hear a hum while tapping the top head. Lightly tap with a drum stick on the top head and loosen the snares until the hum starts to disappear. Stop loosening when the hum is almost gone. If you loosen too much, the snare sound will disappear. If it's too tight, the drum will hum. Understand?
Hello - Thanks for your comment. Marching Snare Heads can be used traditional snare drums. That said, you need to use caution in the tuning process. The strength of the head can damage the shell if the drum is taken to pitch to quickly. Using a drill, for example, can cause damage. Again, proceed carefully when tuning.
i like to know one question????why this snare drum sounds like machine gun tak tak sound.it is for drum line and snare competition,i know but what reason is for that.i am from europe, and in europe people like old school snare drums from french revolution.only scotisch pipe drumers use tak,tak sound.
actually they wouldn’t sound bad. I know a lot of people who have used kevlar heads on drum set snare drums and they sound pretty good. it’s all about the way you tune it
He said "like one and a half turns" not "exactly one and a half full rotations." One and a half as he is demonstrating is 180* + 90* = 270*. It was also fairly obvious that by saying "like" that these are approximate values. Other than that, you clearly know more than Matt Savage.
MrRadar02 probably. But the drum line that I teach rehearsed indoors yesterday due to rain and each snare hit lasts about 30 seconds after it reverberates through the entire building. Sounds like the apocalypse is happening in there. Definitely an outdoor instrument.
Love Matt!!! I learned so much from him!!! He is such a great teacher and an awesome human being!!! So glad to find this video.
Does anyone else love the sound of a new head creaking when you put it on?
I feel you bro, love that sound too
I love the sound of a girl screaming in pleasure grabbing and pulling at the fresh sheets on my bed while fucking her brains out
i hate it hahaa
oml thats graphic

Remo, PLEASE have Paul Rennick do a tuning tutorial.
Yes!!! Please!!!
SCV's snare tuning is just cranking the bottom heads as high as possible, not kidding that's it
PLEASE
that drum is beautiful
That tight sharp crispy snare is an eargasm.
There's just something about the sound of a Yamaha drum. Crispy & crunchy!
Double snare mechanism! I love it!
Did anyone else notice the "old head" was completely fine?
+Ethan Drye Its just for show for the video.
Wow! That's a rockin' tuning key you got going on there, Matt!
Good review. Just to add, I use to push very hard with my open hand on the head once tuned and then check again the tune.
Had the Pearl version of this drum on my drum set for a while; so clean and angry!
Thank you :) I had my doubts but I'm good now. Best drum heads out there.
Not a big Yamaha fan, but that’s one beautiful drum.
Dad is that you?
Imaging if he said,” Hey everybody I’m Adam Savage” and then the myth busters logo slam’s on the screen
Awesome Lesson
Thank you Remo!
sounds beautiful.

I’m new to drum tuning so can anyone tell me what that wire/bar going across on the inside of the snare is?
I believe it’s known as a dual snare mechanism, in which both the batter and resonator heads have snares, instead of just the resonator head having snares. (the batter head is the playing surface/top head, and the resonator head is the bottom head)
Sean Muller so it’s like double snares basically?
Iced Cubes Yeah pretty much; it’s mostly used to get an extremely articulate/crisp snare sound.
Sean Muller thank you 🙏
Duel snare mechanism. :D
I experimented with tuning a snare drum... and I broke the head and rim. :(
+FuzzyPicklesGaming Must not have been a Remo head (☞゚ヮ゚)☞
Good. You're gonna mess it up your first couple of times. Experiment and you'll find what you like
I dis the same christmas day 2 years ago when i got my Yamaha SFZ and fucked up the bottom head
The Rim? If that's the case, you're probably not tightening the lugs evenly. I'm new to tuning and have NEVER broke a rim. Go to your local drum shop; they should be able to teach you how to properly tune a drum. :)
That happened a while ago, and I've figured it out now. :-) And yes, I tightened the lugs unevenly.

If the drum is as described, you would break the tension rods due to their inability to hold enough tension to get the head tight enough to play on. You have to consider that you are tightening up strands of carbon fiber to a playing tension.
bad idea
Can you have a video on how to turn a regular snare drum to a double snare drum?
I really want to know how to make the rims and hardware on my snare look that shiny. What can I use to clean the rims to make them look like that?
You can only get it if you have chrome rims - pearls don't have them, some yamahas don't have them, mapex does, and dynasty does. Nevr-Dull polish works really well if you put in some time.
you have to specifically order chrome hardware for Yamaha snares, otherwise you get standard grey.
You can actually buy the pearl chome hardware on steveweissmusic.com ...dynasty call the customer service ( sales ) ... Yamaha call the customer service ( sales ) mapex call the customer service ( sales )
Pearl does
What type of Yamaha drum is that
Yamaha sfz
It's a Yamaha SFZ MTS which they no longer make any more.
inverted malf pat goddangit!
nice drum
Does the brand of the shell matter as long as you have good heads
Drumhead selection and tuning play a very large part in the sound, feel and durability of the drum but yes every element of the drum itself also contributes to the overall quality of every aspect of the experience.
i love pearl drum and remo and evans and yamaha
do you have to put lubricant on the tension rods????
It will be necessary to put a small amount of white lithium grease on the bottom of the tension rods so that they will not wear out.
how much will it be the clear ambassador? please answer asap
Does that drum have 2 sets of snares? One on top and bottom?
Why does my snare drum not make the snare sound when I hit it softly it just sounds like a tenor drum
Never mind I figured it out my snares were to loose
Haha sounded like blue devils drum right
@@divinezera5178 lmao
its because hes indoors and its also because of the mic. the snares sound best when played outside
I wish my last name was Savage :(
Are those snares under the snare head?
It is just a way to get a more crisp snare sound. (
suckmaballz25 What are you talking about, dipshit? I was talking about the snares that are under the TOP snare head. Stop being so negative. I am fully aware that there are snares under the bottom head. I'm not a fucking imbecile.
+Snare For ever dude he asked a simple question don't be an ass
Alex Neagu no on the side
what if the snare drum doesn't have that thing on the shell can you tighten it up too
If I hear "Acrosst" one more time I'm going to lose my shit

Sorta depends on if you're going to sling it or use a harness.
Can anyone help me with this, I have a yamaha exactly like that but in a blue forest color and I want to mount it onto one of those stands but dont have the thing to connect it to the stand. Does anyone know what they are called or where I could buy one?
Mostly comes with carriers
Matt Rubinstein They might have them on yamahas website
Check lonestar percussion, they have all sorts of brackets specifically for Yamaha drums
does the horizontal adjustment affect the snare sound. our snares sound more like toms when the snare is on. could it be backs it's too tight or the bottom head tuning?

+Jason Parker so the hum is the snare sound then right?
+Jason Parker and the head we have now is for a marching Yamaha snare. it's black and is a S hybrid Evan head
I am between buying a used snare that does not have the harness but has the guts and both heads for 180$ is it worth the money ,please help me
Why dont i see vids on youtube of these kind of marching snares on drum kits?
Hello - Thanks for your comment. Marching Snare Heads can be used traditional snare drums. That said, you need to use caution in the tuning process. Can someone tell me where to get an orange Yamaha sfz exactly like the one in this video? I can't find it anywhere
They don’t sell those ones anymore.. They have newer ones that sound even better, and you can also get a custom paint design on it.
@@kadynhernandez ahh I see.
Is this a 9300 series snare?
Should be a 9214 MTS seeing as it has the top snare, or at least I'm pretty sure!
whats the snear called?
so shinnnnny
Can someone please help me my snare sounds almost like a tenor drum, It has an Evans snare head on it please help
Are your snare guts completely level to the bottom head? If they are cranked past the head, they will bend and you will ruin them.
what about the top snare???
Anybody know what that is inside??
How much does that weigh
Whats the size of that drum?
Johnny Lo 14×12
What drum and head is that
that's a Remo Black Max Snare Drumhead
Remo Inc thank you
I realized that black and white max heads need to be cranked kinda high
+RandomDrumlineGuy lol I didn't want to bust the head but someone finally told me. Oh its Kevlar. It settles fast
Remo Black max
what drumhead is that?
Dalvin Fordyce weatherking black max remo head
I loved drums but i dont have it😔😔
Matt, you don't look a day older than you did in 1993!
Well, maybe a few days.
hmmm maybe a 14x12 or 14x10 not sure
i really wanna know what this sounds like on a kit
GLHFsport well for one it's not made for a kit so it would be bad
actually they wouldn’t sound bad. I know a lot of people who have used kevlar heads on drum set snare drums and they sound pretty good. it’s all about the way you tune it
1 1/2 ummmm no you were doing one full turn

Hi
did you watch the video????????????/ he said it was a remo black max
Is that really 1..and a half?..
Count much?
Theese are not 1 and 1/2 turns that you are doin' . It´s more like a half turn and a 1/4 turn.
1... and a Half
Are marching snres supposed to sound like that? This sounds like a wooden plank
gotta remember he's drumming in a very large cement room where the sound is just bouncing around
Kevlar is to Mylar as aspartame is to sugar.
Artificial sounding and analytical.
And if so, why so big drums ?
Whats the question?
Its actually 14x12
Not enough snares on that tune. And since when does a SNARE drum sound "too snarey"?
Now that im listening..sounds more like a wood block than a snare drum. :/
StupidEarthlings are you stupid?
Ordinary Organs : Well, its my 1st name, yes.
Makes sense no
Should be illegal to play these snares indoors. Probably 2 seconds away from blowing out a window.
Ryan Alexander Bloom you just ain’t tuff enough bruh🤣
MrRadar02 probably. But the drum line that I teach rehearsed indoors yesterday due to rain and each snare hit lasts about 30 seconds after it reverberates through the entire building. Sounds like the apocalypse is happening in there. Definitely an outdoor instrument.
talks too much lol
pleas explain what was under the batter head inside the drum?? why was the snares inside?
did you watch the video????????????/ he said it was a remo black max
