- In this video I check out the new for 2019 EVH 5150 Guitar in Rocket Red and the EVH 5150 Deluxe in Transparent Blue Burst.
Engineered for speed, comfort, and full-throttle attitude, the reimagined 5150® Series Standard is an iconic blast from the past that blends both throwback and modernized features.
Like its predecessor, the 5150 Standard features a modified Strat®-style basswood body with a deeper upper body curve. The graphite-reinforced bolt-on quartersawn maple neck features a comfortable modified “C” profile, hand-rubbed urethane back finish, heel-mount truss rod adjustment wheel and matching “hockey stick” headstock with EVH® logo decal. Built for smooth and speedy playability, the 12”-16” compound radius maple fingerboard has 22 jumbo frets and black dot inlays.
While the famed striped original had a single humbucking bridge pickup only, the all-new 5150 is outfitted with an HH pickup configuration controlled by a quick access three-way toggle on the lower bout. The custom designed EVH® Wolfgang® Alnico 2 Humbucker bridge pickup delivers the perfect amount of punch and articulation with sweet sustain and thick chunky rhythms in a perfectly balanced EQ curve. The EVH Wolfgang humbucker neck pickup serves up no-nonsense, balls to the wall overdrive and endless sustain without skimping on articulate cleans when the volume is rolled down. A high-friction tone knob provides unmatched tonal performance, while the custom designed EVH-branded low-friction volume knob creates even-volume tapering for the smoothest volume swells.
Decked out with a “dive-bomb” certified EVH-branded top-mount Floyd Rose® bridge, each locking nut tailpiece features fine tuners and a patented EVH D-Tuna® for switching back and forth from drop-D to standard tuning in an instant.
A high-octane, high performance axe, the 5150 Standard boasts battle-ready style in either a Matte Army Drab, Rocket Red or Satin Primer Grey finish with all-chrome hardware, including the EVH-branded Gotoh® tuning machines. The maple top deluxe versions are available in Tobacco Burst and Transparent Blue Burst.
I am using a Yamaha THR10X amp for the review. No PEDALS, mixing or post-processing.
People who bitch about basswood bodies are idiots.
Joe Satriani plays basswood body guitars for decades,John Petrucci´s old Ibanez JPM models were all made of basswood,Gutrie Govan and Tosin Abasi have used basswood body guitars extensively in the studio and live and John Suhr(the founder of Suhr Guitars) said that basswood is his favorite bodywood.
The whole toane wood argument in generall is retarded, when you have companies like Aristides making high-end instruments out of composite materials.
Hell, there´s that guy who makes Strats and Teles out of coloured crayons and they sound just like any trad. strat or tele.
Guthrie used basswood extensively?
And by that you likely mean Suhr guitars.
@@SSVplus Guthrie used basswood Suhrs and also one of his Charvel USA custom shop guitars is made out of basswood.
That’s your ears and their ears and preferences. Other people’s preference are just as valid.
@@lostinpa-dadenduro7555 Stupidity as a preference is always a valid point.
Cool that you use VH riffs that most people don`t play . Van Halen Rocks .
So glad you said that Dave thank you :)
Agreed!..Van Halen rocks...
Aftershock, one of their best.
That's cos this guy is one of the only youtubers with the balls and skills to actually play the riffs! Well done man.
So happy to see a young person spend so much time and energy into learning Eddie's music. And you did a great job with the tone too. And of course the guitars kick ass as well. Ppl like you will keep rock alive. Great job.
A young person
@@OldRunt An Old Runt! :)
If you would've lived in the 80's you'd easily been have a guitar god. I'm glad we have you in the now for youtube reviews.
Cameron you need to do a record with Glenn Huges
Rest In Peace Eddie. We love and miss ya...
There’s nothing wrong with being a “EVH fan boy”
These look and sound great Cam!
Thank you Mark. I agree with you but many people don't want to look like that :)
I agree. What’s wrong with being a fan boy of the most influential guitarist in the past 40 years... I proudly wear that label 🤘💎💖
tkdunn exactly! There is nothing shameful of that, Guitar would be completely different if it wasn’t for EVH!
@@MarkPritchardGuitar absolutely right but I fear people are missing the point that many people don't want to look like an overt Van Halen fan. In summer NAMM videos this year, the EVH team admitted that they did research and recieved a lot of feedback from players who love the guitars but won't play them because of the stripes because they were deemed inappropriate for their setting or musical style for example those who play the guitar in church.
I don't have a problem with the stripes. Look at the wall behind me aha
@@CameronCooper I can tottally understand that. You onlty think of one person when you see the stripes and some people dont want that especially in church.
Haha i know you like the stripes, i'm thinking of getting one of the striped series to use for Eb tuning only.
PS love your videos mate, im a big fan!
No 1 Van Halen style Chanel and player!
I really wish kramer was owned by fender instead of gibson. Imagine having a USA kramer custom shop, good god. Killer as always cam, tight playing.
Leave it to Gibson to kill a real cool brand
@@mikew9788 yeah, i'm not saying it would be perfect under fender, but it'd be way better than it is now i'm sure
Julián Sáenz I mean it probably would be damn near perfect. The USA Charvel’s are some of the finest playing instruments I’ve ever laid my hands on. I imagine if Fender owned Kramer they would be quite similar. There’s nothing that’s ever blown me away about any Gibson guitar, even some cool vintage ones that I’ve played, it’s no wonder they’re going under. For the price you pay the quality just isn’t there
I love what you said.
I am always wanting a charvel glad I hesitated this looks like one hell of an instrument . They are probably 1300 bucks though.
Good job on the later VH material. Everyone loves to hate Sammy but I think Balance has some of Eddie's best tone and playing. His tone was insane on that record....at a time when grunge was king and everyone was dumbing down their sound.
Agreed. I don't understand the balance hate at all. I think it's better than the first two Hagar records and I love those too.
Eddie's playing lost its edge when Sammy joined the band.
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 he ceased to attempt to show off and simply concentrated on song writing in my opinion. He matured.
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 lol, no.
Seen VH live 8 times. On the balance tour Eddies tone live was the best In my opinion.. better than everything I have heard anyware ever
Man, I still can’t get over how clean and effortless you play. I try some of this stuff and feel like I’ve got all thumbs with extra notes ringing, unmuted strings, etc. Just sloppy by comparison. Your precision is unmistakeable, and your THR X sounds fantastic !
Cameron you may be one of the cleanest most accurate players ive ever witnessed freakin amazing, im in middle of trying to decide on a new ax , between charvel and evh and couple others , thanks for great reviews
Killer guitars and you totally nailed the tone in this video. I actually took a pretty long break from your channel to see how far you would progress when I returned and I'm not disappointed. You are becoming quite the player, you are letting your playing breath a lot more, that's the main thing I've noticed, big admirer of your channel and playing keep up the great work.
Just stumbled upon this video randomly. This dude can play!!!! Great review too.
I saw a Rocket Red at Guitar Center. It may be the prettiest guitar I've seen. It really stood out from the rest on the rack
Nice! Someone that can review AND actually play! Thank you!
i haven't bought one of these yet because i haven't seen any reviews yet of it... thanks for putting it through it's paces!
You are for sure the best Eddie Van Halen interpreter in RUclips.
What a pleasure to hear you explain, exposit and play.
So nice to hear someone play those 90's Van Halen riffs!
Thanks for the review as always. Man u jus took me back with those Balance riffs. I saw them 2 times for that tour. Was a great time to b young and playing guitar back then
Thanks for reviewing, great playing as always Cam. I think you could make a shovel sound good. These look right up my alley. Love the burst look. Remind me of the old school Kramers.
Dude, you are bad-ass knowing so many EVH riffs from all time periods and played very well. BRAVO! Love all your vids.
Starting the video off with the solo from “Girl Gone Bad” is bad-ass!! You have my respect!!
Thanks Trent! :)
Really enjoyed that, you also managed to get the more modern vh tones too, it sounded spot on , great playing and a reminder of how good Eddie was. Thanks Cam.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That Cathedral moment is pure fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Soooo SIKK. 🤘🏼
So cool man!!! Love those new 5150 Series Guitars!!! Can't wait to try them at NAMM!!!
You play great VH shreds, it easily shows. But You also are nailing the tone for all different eras of VH music. Can you do a vid of what equipment you are using and how you are dailing it in?
Thanks for the review. Awesome playing by the way. Cheers!
Flat black with gloss black 5150 pattern would be absolutely sick .
One of my Skype students did exactly that on his guitar and it looks wild!!
I love your playing. Awesome. Great review.
I appreciate this demo and your playing! Well done.
Great demo man you have some serious EVH chops. Cheers
CamCoop is a veritable Shreddie Van Halen.
Awesome demo, Cam!! Also impeccable tone. Loved drop dead legs and cathedral. Keep going bro!!!
Top notch video. These guitars sound great, and your vibrato is epic!
That cover of runaround is brilliant.
Dude....you NAILED that Girl Gone Bad solo at the top....wow. Amazing.....
Man this is badass! Cam you are amazing dude! I’ve wanted to learn these EVH songs for years and seeing you play them has helped me figure them out, but also inspires me!
Well I got some Van Halen licks to learn now... thanx Cam...killer playing to 🤘
Thank you Dennis! :)
Elegant and powerful...never forgetting it comes from a 5 best guitar player’s!!.... and you guys, are on that track! Have you all a nice Sunday.(wow, that’s runaround).
Great Demo !!!
Ughhh, you’re so annoyingly good at the Van Halen stuff! Well done mate, awesome to see Eddie’s genius is still inspiring young players. 🤘🏻
Have they sponsored you yet? They should!! Great as always! 🤘🏻
Super cool video and review.... you play that van Halen stuff like a pro great job you should be proud
Love your reviews dude. You choose the best tones to demo the sounds of the guitars, your improvisations are inspiring and your guitar work is phenomenal. A tribute to the work you put in on the instrument. Well done son!!
Thank you Martin I really appreciate that man! :)
Thanks Cameron. Another great video. We all appreciate what you do. Quick question. Are these guitars you just review and send back or are they yours? Sorry if you’ve said this in one of your many previous vids. Cheers!
I came for the meat and stayed for the steak, potatoes and got the dessert too!
Thank You Cam for just the right amount of talk and all kinds of shredding. Those Yammy amps sound sooooo good. Both of those EVH versions sound amazing but I did notice the quilted top version had a fuller sound. You demoed the best looking color schemes as the other versions are horrendous. Personally I would go with a solid black, white or wood tone with a single VH stripe just in the right place for honors
Superb job playing all those riffs!! Love the blue burst!
man i love how you play, as a big fan of van halen i can say that i've seen lot of cover videos and you're one of the best, not always exactly the same as the original but you have the style, a real pleasure to watch and hear !
Like the raw playing style you have. Never hear the riffs you were tooling around with(Drop Dead Legs-Human Beings). Nice playing ... keeping at it!
Damn you played all my favorite songs and so smoothly!! I am restless to get this in next sale!
Those guitars are really incredible. Very functional and they look cool. And you played all the riffs and leads so well!
Another great vid Cam...keep up the awesomeness 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Wow, EVH guitars in different finishes. I guess a long time coming. Yes, fanboy, poser, wannabe, lol! Unless your Derek Fuller, Al Estrada & others! Thanks for another wonderful review. Seriously, no buttering up here, always a pleasure to listen to you play 👍🏽. Thanks again Cam
Girl gone bad!!! Nice job Cam! One of the best classic VH songs ever.
Awesome playing ! I am glad to see this video..I plan on getting the Red one with the Maple neck like the one you play here..looks like you have quite the collection of EVH guitars !!
Awesome demo. Is that a THR10X? Sounds great.
Yo, that blue one is a fcking beauty! Great playing as always Cam 🤘🏼
Excellent video. Very informative. Great playing.
Great video and demo. Really like this lineup.
These new guitars are awesome, plus it doesn't hurt to shred like ya do either! I'm sold, definitely the ones with the ebony fret-boards sound MUCH better than the maple necks.
Thanks for the lesson as well !!. Always been a visual guitarist. No theory and can't read music. Just my ears and eye's teach me.
Sounds Great Cam. What amp effects, pedals, or Helix type device/Amp are you using? Killer Tone. Sounds like a David Bray Amp.
It's just a Yamaha thr10x ....superb amps
Bro, major kudos on those riffs from Balance! Your Eddie tone is friggin dialed in! (Not to mention your playing is stellar)!! What amp/chorus do u use??
He's using his Yamaha thr 10x I'm sure
Balance is such an underrated album.
Wow. You certainly know your way around the VH licks. Cool. Very cool.
And just like that, I want the blue quilt and drab green.
Ha! I know right? Been looking 6 months. Held off but saw this at this price point.
Awesome job, especially on Aftershock and the Mean Streets intro.
Nice! I caught that "feeling" riff! Good $hit bro!!
Dude you’ve got those EVH chops down pat!
Finally a good review!😂 I’m going to be making a purchase I guess!
Amazing playing VH forever
“If you have a cathedral moment, go for it. “ 🤣🤣
WE WANT A CATHEDRAL LESSON!
Smoking guitars and EVH riffs. Thanks Cameron !!
you're a monster player Cam!!!
Thanks so much Sam!
Cathedral was awesome Cameron!
Cam - great overview and even better playing. Can you elaborate on your amp/pedal config? Your tone is insane.
Hi John, I'm using a Yamaha THR10X
They look, and sound great!
Great review, great playing as well!
Just got this suggested, Cam your playing is awesome, first time I got to.see VH was on their balance tour, it's an album I love, thank you
Thanks so much Gavin!! :)
I got one of these!! the neck is amazing. the tone is amazing, the price is amazing !!! the satin finish allows for more dynamic tone.
Love the rocket red model.
Sounds great but then again you could play ‘frere Jacques’ and it would sound amazing!!
Keep up the great work!! 🤘🤘
Great Job playing & Review!
Great playing and the gats sound awesome
Well done, as always...! Thanks a lot...!!!
I know one other person who can pull off Van Halen with absolutely perfect technique, pretty impressed with the demo.
I've pushed faders for a lot of posers and hopefully, just can't tell if you're actually using a variac because it seems like there should be a little more sag, I'm listening on a phone but... Very nice.
I'm not using any typical equipment used to typically achieve an Eddie Style tone. I'm using a Yamaha THR10X
The real question is how many of these did Cam just sell? Quite a few I'm sure!!!
Cameron your an amazing guitar player mate. I been subscribed to your channel because your content is never lacking. Keep up the outstanding work! 👍
Incredibly kind of you Peter, thanks so much !
Love the headstock on these
You do a really good and pleasant job. Bravo.
Awesome video, and guitar!!!
Awesome playing
nice video and nice play dude !
They look and sound great, but I want a straight up Kramer Beretta body "5150" museum replica like they did for the Frankenstrat. The moon tape 5150 numbers, the dings, scratches and everything. It's my favorite VH guitar and was very iconic.
Hey thats some great playing! Great review as well, good variety of Van Halen tunes! I will say the guitars more closely sound like Eddies post 1984 sound but sound great playing classics too!
That would be a stealth 5150 stripe job
I’m deciding between this guitar and a Ibanez rg550. Not too sure but I like both in my opinion.
I ordered me a striped series 5150 guitar idc if I look like the biggest fanboy there is 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼
Great playing! Really enjoyed watching!
the logical reason people complain about basswood, is because every woodworker on earth could tell you it's a softer wood! The ares where screws go into the body are much more prone to stripping, also the guitar should dent very easily even with a fingernail if unfinished. Basswood sounds awesomely balanced, but just is a very soft (easy on machines) type of wood!
Awesome thanks Cam!!!
I've been wanting one of the charvel dk24s for a while now, then I see this guitar and to be honest now I am torn. Would it be possible to see a shootout between charvel and evh?? Playing all styles of music?? You are the man to show the comparison! Love you Cam!!
