I would have liked for that couple to have interviewed people just to here the old Border accent. God knows what Border people do for a living used to be full of Woolen Textile Mills. Of course the Munitions ended after the War. I remember my Mother saying "What a shame it gave the men jobs"!! I recall a Nuclear Submarine Base closing in Plymouth Massashusetts and people protesting about job losses. Such contradictions I feel for the poor Ukraine and this unthinkable horror of War again in Europe. People must say no to War!
Ukrainians worked in the Mills in Galashiels when I started Work in 1959 and Poles!

No children these days. When I grew up the Border towns were alive with Children. A War Baby born 1944! At the Viscount Earl Haig Maternity Hospital Hawick. I suppose he wanted troops to replace the 750,000 his Class Murdered!

That was a nostalgic wee trip! I grew up around Moffat and St Mary's Loch and The Grey Mair's Tail were regular day trips for us.
You mentioned the road condition and I don't know if the difference is as stark as it used to be but, as soon as you cross from Dumfriesshire into The Borders, did you notice that the road instantly gets wider, smoother, straighter and a lot less potholey! 😂

I cycled from Hawick to St Mary's Loch then to Selkirk and back to Hawick must have been 13. Never cycled any distance after that. St Mary's Loch was bombed during the War. Some Jerry Airman getting rid of his bombs I suppose. Oddly my Mother made Incendiary bombs and my Aunt Myra made 0.303 Bullets at St Boswells.
German's never bombed the factory who would think Munitions would be made there?!
I live in New Zealand these days weather "gey dreich" for the poor New Zealanders in their main holiday Summer. Soon as the sun comes out the children are back to school!
Thank the modern age for Electronics and the Internet. I remember 7 weeks of School and it must have rained and misted all that time. Played Monopoly mostly and Whist. Like
      Cycling never again! Cheers!

Great new video on Scottish Borders. We live about 25 mins from St Mary's Loch. The road from Selkirk to there is NOT a great journey in a motorhome.
