    I don’t know if you’ve ever tried making soap or shampoo before, but calendula is wonderful in both! In soaps it helps repair and protect the skin, much like in a salve, and in shampoos it encourages hair growth and repair, and helps ease frizz.

    My plan is to make blackberry muffins with lemon topped with lavender sugar. All of which are summer seasonals that I can add to my morning breakfast. I can't really afford to spend the extra money on seasonal cut flowers for the house, so I'm going to try shifting my breakfast additions to have a little something seasonal. I'm not sure if I want to use them as spells at the moment, the three don't really blend magically for a daily thing.

    You're garden spell bag reminds me of the pennsylvania dutch urglaawe tradition of the butzmann. It's basically an enchanted scarecrow stuffed with the garden or crop materiel of your land. He is created around imbolc (groundhogs day in this tradition) and empowered with a spirit before the end of may. He watches over your land, crops and gardens throughout the growing seasons to ensure healthy abundant crops, keep pests away and keep troublesome spirits away. He is ritually burned before Samhain so that he can join the wild hunt with Frau Holle and his body can't be possessed by nefarious spirits.

    I just watched two of your videos from a couple of years ago, and just spent 2 hours cleaning out a huge sunroom that’s been “the bane of my existence” and you inspired me to look around and realize how much I was already subconsciously doing and have been for a long time. So much so, my sister brought me a brown bottle with a pump top she found by the sink and HAD to ask if it actually was soap. I propagate in test tube cuttings in my bedroom window, and somehow no where else. My rock “collection” which is so big its just well placed in the yard. I have been angry for years. I have long since given up so much of this. And with some work, I might find all of me again. And she wont all be angry.
    You have my deepest thanks.

    I found that summer is ideal time for night rituals - it's warm and you could stay outside as long as you need. Also some of my favorite constellations and stars are now in the sky..
    I always make sure that my potted protectors have everything they needed to rest and gain strength for the next winter: light, wind, maybe some thunderstorm water... The Waxing Moon rituals are the best at this time of the year, when everything is growing.
    Also I believe that summer is a good time to know better the local spirits, make some contact or acquaintances, when they are in the mood and not struggle through the cold monthes, some big trees or stones a good place for looking.
    And, of course, gardening and foraging, using all that abundant solar energy. I especially love making fermented teas with cherry and raspberry leaves.

    Lovely video as always. Just a thought on the abundant calendula - I like to press and dry flowers to make subtle window charms, a witchy decoration for someone's birthday card, or even to just to attach to a magical wreath. I know I've seen you work with herbs and flowers in similar ways, but with the properties and beauty of the calendula I think it could make for some especially pretty and powerful charms. Also, this can be a pretty discreet practice, pressing and decorating with flowers is a common thing to do, so good for anyone who isn't out with their practice.

    Hi, first time commenting under one of your videos ':)
    As an Italian herbalist I like to use calendula in the most "simple" way: I love making tinctures and infused oil with it so that I can use it later on in the year. I also keep a good amount of dried flowers for tea 🌼.
    One of the plant that are most abundant in my garden now is lemon balm, I'm working with it almost every day, finding ways to preserve it in the form of teas, syrup and tincture
    Love your channel and your videos, kisses from Northern Italy🌿

I struggle with sensitive and very dry skin, and nothing seems to work and I would love to find something natural that would help with that. Do you have any ideas on what kind of oils and plants could help me with that?

    • @Kira_Martel
      @Kira_Martel Год назад

      Olive oil is a classic oil for infusing, but sweet almond oil can also be lovely. You might want to do some reading on oleic vs. linoleic acids in oils and which would be best for your skin type. As for herbs, calendula is wonderfully soothing, healing, and moisturizing. Rose is great (just think of the texture of a rose petal), and one of my favorites is Self-heal. Comfrey and plantain are both high in allantoin which is a great skin healer. Lavender is good for healing redness and calming reactionary skin. Hope that helps get you started! 🌱💚

    I was so happy when my calendula seeds sprouted and then gave me flowers. However, I was soooo sad when the plant got infested with bugs. I tried so hard to “organically” rid them if the bugs. Sadly I was not successful 😢. I had to pull up the plants.
    Do I have any advice on how I can prevent them.

    • @Kira_Martel
      @Kira_Martel Год назад

      It was probably not happy where it was. Calendula is generally very easy to grow, so it was probably not loving the soil, watering schedule, etc. A healthy plant has an easier time resisting bugs, even growing next to other infested plants, so beefing up the soil, choosing a different location, or changing how often you water it will probably help.

    I am an elderly person who has recently suffered from shingles. I am left with itchy/extremely sensitive skin. Due to very raw nerve endings, I dare not scratch otherwise I suffer extreme pain in the back of my head that even affects my eyesight. Doctors only recommend cold compresses and medication. Compresses don't work and the pain lasts only 20-30 minutes making meds pointless. Is there a salve that would numb the skin thus "road blocking" the pain cycle?

      St John's wort is specific for nerve pain. Now is the perfect time to gather it, as it flowers in late june. St John's wort and lemon balm are also both antiviral, specifically for the herpes virus (shingles is a herpes virus infection). You could make infused oils with both and combine them in a salve, or infuse some St John's wort oil and add lemon balm essential oil (I have heard more of the essential oil being used and not so much infused oil of lemon balm; essential oil will be stronger antiviral)
      If it is too painful to apply a salve you can use a topical spray. There is a formula by Jill Stansbury using aleo gel, calendula succus (juice of the flowers), liquorice tincture, st John's wort tincture, and lemon balm essential oil. It's in her book Herbal formularies for health professionals vol 4, in case you want to look it up.
      There are many interactions of St John's wort with drugs. If you're taking it internally it is crucial to check those and discuss with a herbalist and/or your doctor. I am not entirely sure if this is also when you use it topically in a salve. I would assume it's not the case, but it is better to check, in case you're taking anything.
      I hope this is helpful and you find some relief!

      I've heard that sage oil can relieve the itching from shingles. You can make it with grapeseed oil and dried sage from the store. Put the oil and the dried herb in a Mason jar either in a pan on the stove or a Crock-Pot with an inch or 2 of water on low for 3-5 hours. This helps the oil get infused by the herb. Strain it after it has infused and cooled completely and rub the oil on the affected area. 2 tablespoons dried sage to 1 cup grapeseed oil. It will moisturize the area and after a few days the pain should start to decrease.

      My first thought is St. John's Wort, since it's specific to nerve issues. It can work slowly but it's very effective. My teacher has a client who used it to repair nerve damage after a car accident. It took her 2½ years of consistent use, but she was eventually able to regain completely normal sensation.
