  • Brahms' piano quintet went through two transformations in its composition: initially started as a string quintet with the same orchestration as Schubert's, then turned into a sonata for two pianos, then finally, polished as a piece for piano and a string quartet.
As expected from Brahms, there are plenty of great contrapunctal writing here, such as in the introduction and the coda of the final movement. There are many elements inspired by Schubert's quintet: such as the flat supertonic grace-note ending of the third movement and the overall key of F minor (the key of the turbulent section of the second movement of Schubert's quintet).
The Artemis quartet provides a thilling, clear performance of this quintet, allowing the listeners to notice all the different textures Brahms incorporates into the quintet.
