Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 (Artemis Quartet + Andsnes)
Brahms' piano quintet went through two transformations in its composition: initially started as a string quintet with the same orchestration as Schubert's, then turned into a sonata for two pianos, then finally, polished as a piece for piano and a string quartet.
As expected from Brahms, there are plenty of great contrapunctal writing here, such as in the introduction and the coda of the final movement. There are many elements inspired by Schubert's quintet: such as the flat supertonic grace-note ending of the third movement and the overall key of F minor (the key of the turbulent section of the second movement of Schubert's quintet).

Schumann: Piano Quintet in Eb Major, Op. 44 (Artemis Quartet + Andsnes)
Schumann's monumental Piano Quintet is played by the Artemis Quartet with conciseness and vigor. This Quintet was probably heavily influenced by Schubert's Eb trio: these two pieces share very similar characteristics, starting with the obvious choice of key and with some subtle similarities such as the funeral march second movements and bringing back previously introduced music in the final mov...
Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B minor D. 759 "Unfinished" (Mackerras)
Although Schubert was never able to listen to any live performances of his symphonies, his 8th symphony, along with his 9th (The Great), stand as someone of the greatest of the genre. However, from this, we can see many influences of the lieder in these symphonies in song-like melodies, which are prevalent in the first movement of this symphony. Perhaps one of the most striking features of this...
Schubert: Symphony No. 2 in B-Flat (New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert)
Schubert's early symphonies are often neglected as works-in-progress. Although there is some truth in that, as these pieces are heavily overshadowed by his last two symphonies, young Schubert manages to pull off writing a great classical symphony. Influence from Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn could clearly be seen in his second symphony. However, Schubert still manages to incorporate some of his ...
Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor-Eb (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Claudio Abbado)
As the first work that established Mahler's lifelong view of the beauty of the afterlife and resurrection, this symphony stands as the first truly Mahlerian symphony. There is a clear influence of Beethoven from his 9th symphony here - both use the choir as centerpieces in the final movement and both symphonies start in a minor key and end in a major key (although Beethoven's ends in the enharm...
Tchaikovsky:Symphony No.6 in B minor, Op.74 "Pathétique"(Russian National Orchestra,Mikhail Pletnev)
This symphony is a true culmination of Tchaikovsky himself: everything he had as a composer was squeezed into this symphony. From the jubilant ending of the 3rd movement to the lugubrious morendo ending of the final movement, this symphony contains a plethora of different emotions - reflecting Tchaikovsky's depression (and his suicidal tendencies). Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D. 664 - Mitsuko Uchida

Schubert's early piano sonatas are very underplayed - in fact they were completely neglected for a century, except his 18th piano sonata, hailed as a "perfect sonata" by Schumann. Common views were that Schubert's sonatas were vastly inferior to Beethoven's. However, although he was influenced by the great composer, Schubert maintained his own distinct style of piano sonata composition. This so...
Schubert: String Quartet No. 15 in G Major, D. 887 - Belcea Quartet

This magnificent String Quartet, perhaps even better than the "Death and the Maiden" Quartet, finishes off Schubert's fine collection of String Quartets. This quartet is full of a whole array of emotions - all the movements hold the listeners on edge with every modulations being magical. The last movement, in particular is very interesting - it seems to fluctuate between major and minor very of...

Schubert: String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, D. 810 "Death and the Maiden"- Belcea Quartet
Having its nickname from its second movement - a movement that has variations of a theme from the lied "Death and the Maiden" which was composed even years prior to the composition of the quartet - this quartet rightfully stands as one of the cornerstones of chamber music repertoire. So intense are the emotions that some scholars speculate that this piece is Schubert's testament to death after ...
Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C# minor (London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev)

Mahler is the master of symphonies. He completed nine symphonies and left one incomplete - they are all frequently performed. This powerful rendition of Mahler's 5th Symphony by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. Gergiev brings out the best of Mahler here such as the powerful climaxes and the tranquil, sweet tone of the Adagietto. NAVIGATION - MVMT 1: 00:03 MVMT 2: 13:18...
Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor(Berlin Philharmonic, Claudio Abbado)

Mahler is the master of symphonies. He completed nine symphonies and left one incomplete - they are all frequently performed. Abbado, hailed as an interpreter of Mahler, performs this work in an unconventional way. When the symphony was first published, the Scherzo came as the second movement. However, Mahler revised the symphony later and put the Scherzo to be the third movement. Currently, mo...
Schubert: Piano Trio in E-Flat Major, Op. 100, D. 929 - Trio Wanderer
Schubert's contribution to chamber music repertoire is great - masterpieces such as his last three string quartets, the Trout Quintet, the great String Quintet and his two piano trios are considered cornerstones of chamber music. The Wanderer Trio, although slightly lacking in the second movement, plays the trio with a sweet tone - necessary for Schubert's music. NAVIGATION - Mvmt 1: 0:08 Mvmt ...

Carol Neblett - Soprano Marilyn Horne - Mezzo Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Claudio Abbado

Abbado and Mahler it is a perfect combination
Muchas Gracias por compartir esta obra maestra.

At 30:51 we hear the consistency of the timpani drums as played by Donald Koss. Brilliantly played!
Cool acoustics
the best!
This has gotten criminally low views and comments. The state of our bankrupt culture, I guess.

Excellent performance of this beautiful Symphony. Orchestra direction truly worthy of note and praise. To keep. Bravo, M° Pletnev, excellent.
Should have been around for Star Wars

The CSO in this recording plays that moment at 4:09 better than anyone else; the passion of the swell is not ignored but neither is it overdone. A lot of orchestras really overdo it and make it into this outrageous, flashy moment.
2nd mv, m107, isn't it supposed to be D sharp?
Esecuzione magnifica !
@The Classical Dude -- TY for posting.
Grazie

I used this video for months as the peak performance I wanted to achieve. Great piece, great playing

What YEAR is this recording??

Second movement gets me
Many think the second is one of the best of Schubert's compositions.
The exuberance of the piece is perfectly reflected in the playing. Moved me to tears.
This and Beethoven's 5th...are really not music. They're just anger in a box. Death Metal for erudits and burgeois.
I think you are cheeky!
It would be fascinating to know where you got your musicology... and your weed.
Discovered it recently it's getting more and more enjoyable each time ! Didn't knew much about Mahler except his wikipedia page I regret not giving him a try beforr

I don't have time to give this a full listen, but I think this is almost the only performance I've found of the scherzo that doesn't bore me eventually. It's such an apparently haphazard piece of music that it needs a master's touch to make it sound like a single journey, but, at least on this listen, I think Abbado pulled it off. Gotta give it another try as part of the whole symphony next.
Perfection as usual.Beautiful playing.Very delicate and sensitive.Thank you.
Easily my favorite recording of Mahler 6th. The sound of the hammer is just...perfect. Just like I envisioned it.
This is a little fast !!!
