  • Although Schubert was never able to listen to any live performances of his symphonies, his 8th symphony, along with his 9th (The Great), stand as someone of the greatest of the genre. However, from this, we can see many influences of the lieder in these symphonies in song-like melodies, which are prevalent in the first movement of this symphony. Perhaps one of the most striking features of this symphony is the first 8 bars - the ominous low-register cello/double bass melody. Whether or not this could be taken as an introduction, in no other Schubert symphony do we see something like this. This melody line is then heavily developed later in the piece through the use of some ingenius counterpoint.
