Good Morning Jess! Great to see what you are doing with the Geraniums. They look good. This is the Flower that does Awesome in my Pots in Yuma, Arizona!! They can really take the heat. As Usual MAX is like your Buddy Sidekick!! He is Really Growing! Love Seeing Both of you! Sending Love & Hugs 😘😘💞💞🐾🐾🐾🐾❣️❣️
I don’t bother checking mine until it’s planting time. They are pretty resilient. Keeping them nice & dry will keep them dormant. Yup you did everything right. I think too many ppl overthink this process. It’s more simple then we realize. My neighbor overwinter hers right in the pots w/o watering. She puts it out in Spring & they always do beautifully.
Jes, you have some nice looking plants. What a good idea to buy them at the end of the season. I live in Iowa and have wintered geraniums for years. I’ve done both ways. Saving them in pots and storing in bags. The end result was same. I pot them up in January and keep them cut back to encourage good root growth. They will be leggy at first but will reward you with huge plants full of blooms. Good luck‼️
Every Fall I overwinter my geraniums. I’m in WI. Usually about early November, I water them one last time, lightly, and leave them in the garage until the dirt seems nice (not drenched, not bone dry). Then I give them a haircut, leaving about 4” to 5” of stem. I set the entire pot inside a black garbage bag, keeping the top open, but gently up over the pot. I put the bags in my crawlspace, but I would do it in a basement if I had one & if it got cold enough. I don’t check on it at all. I don’t water it at all. I leave it until April or May, then bring it out and clean up any dried leaves. I water it and slowly give it sun in my garage window, until it’s warm enough to set them back outside. I will add some fresh potting soil after I put it outside again. My mother-in-law has been doing it this way for 75 years. She’ll be 98 in May!!!
Wow Jill this is so fun to read! It’s crazy all the ways people are overwintering them. I wish I would have known we could do this a long time ago. But it’s fun to start now I guess. That’s amazing your mother in law is 98. God bless her. I’d love to hear her tell stories! sounds like she is a great gardening.
I'm in Wisconsin too! :) I am going to try the paper bag method from the tutorial here, and I have a few more I will now try your black garbage bag method too. I don't understand what you do to secure the top of the bag though. 😅 I'm so excited to do this. Thanks for a great video! :)
LisaJoy, I do not secure the top of the black garbage bag. I bring the bag up over the top and loosely leave it there, open, but no light. You need a bit of air flow.
That’s cool. A friend of mine in CO snips all the blooms off of hers & keeps them in the pots, takes them up to her attic (which is standing room & has a big window) & keeps them watered until spring. Once outdoors again they start growing & blooming. She’s got about 30 & has been doing it like that for years. I live in the south & keep mine in pots, trim off the blooms & just drag them into the garage until spring.
The geraniums look really good to me. I'm doing it for the first time too. I'll have to check mine now. I can tell you're the fun aunt, dragging your niece around on a rug, she must love that! Looks like Max is having the time of his life.
Hey Jes, I think we watched the same video, Susan’s in the garden. I have 10 geraniums in cardboard boxes in my basement. They didn’t go down there til mid November. I’ll check them this weekend when I take all my Christmas lights down to store. Hopefully they are looking like yours. I used to bring them in to winter in pots, but my house turned into a jungle. Plus I have 2 young cats 🐱 🐱 & I’m sure they would love them to death. Have a blessed day.
I am overwintering our geraniums in the garage. Thus far the temperature there stays in the 40s (even when we had temps of 20s Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). They are blooming - so nice to have color! Keeping my fingers crossed that they will continue to thrive during the coldest periods of the winter months (coastal Virginia). I hope your geraniums will continue to live. Your niece is adorable and a great playmate for Max. I bet he slept well that night.
Hello Jes , I am the sub who commented about your rockin chair mama song several months ago . Hope you are well . Mom fell and broke hip , had successful surgery and is doing well . Please keep her in your prayers and I will pray for you and your family as well .
Hi Jess , I just checked mine and they are the same as you , so excited, much easier than over wintering in pots. I just don’t have room for that . By the way I got my stratus boots 😃 love them .
Northern Michigan, i overwinter about 70 geraniums in pots in my Michigan basement. I leave the lights on (regular led bulbs (mostly so I can see what’s happening down there)) and last year I did not water at all. I bring them out around May 15, cut back by about 1/2 , water and put in my portable green house. With some bloom builder fertilizer, they are luscious by mid July and this saves me hundreds of $$.
Max loves the crunchy leaves on the Geraniums since they make a lovely sound . I read in a Birds and and Blooms magazine years ago that a man had the same Geraniums for 25 years doing what you do . I only had 2 pots with Geraniums this year and they are with my other houseplants in an upstairs bedroom that stays pretty cool. I do water every few weeks , they got a touch of frost before I took them in so I’m not sure how it will turn out
Never had geraniums', bought them on sale and put in the ground. I left them in there. Will see if they make it over the winter.. I'm in Northern California
Yes that is a girl called Nicole smith! She is so down to earth and relaxing to watch. She’s in Texas so diff from me here in Michigan. And she’s super funny. LOL
6 week before last frost (march) remove all shriveled, dead leaves and prune back leaving only living green stems. Pot it up and water thoroughly. Place the pot in a sunny window or under artificial lighting gradually acclimating them to the light. And bring outside when clear of frost!
Jes my friend s kitten chew the Christmas lights off her Christmas tree,so watch Max !! Mg daughter has 3 cats and the cats were just going wild climbing on the tree and playing w the ornaments omg ,she didn’t even decorate half of the tree😂Max is adorable!! I didn’t buy any geraniums last year I love them so much but they die when Summer comes ,this year I’m going to attempt to do what you are doing and see if I can save them ! I’ll try I know the climate is different here in Florida ours like I said starting dying around June/July
Jes I’m just curious,in the spring are you gonna cut off the top of the geraniums?im gonna buy some .now it’s the time to grow them here ,they do really well, then I’ll try to put them in my garage and see what happens 😊
Yes I’ll trim off a little of the top and also the dead leaves. I’ll prune it leaving only green living stems! Good luck! 👍🏻 I hope it works. Good idea to try and save them before the hot 🥵
Not plant related I wanted to ask you more less how many months is your kitty .My daughter has one my mother in-laws gave it to her for her birthday .But we can’t take it to the vet cause they only see 6months and up.We been going crazy on the age range we think like 4 to five months anyways great day.
We got him mid October and he was 8 weeks old. So I’d say he’s about 4 1/2 months now. We took him in at about 12 weeks old just to make sure everything was okay. And they scheduled for us to come back when he was about 3 1/2 months old for spraying. He did great!!
@@jesthesinginggardener wow ya my daughter called here to the vet but in Texas they don't do anything to kitten 5month and below have to be 6 months for shots only.I think if I'm not worry ur kitty and my daughters and the same age month 🤔😱🙂
I have not seen any helpful way to store this plant , the video is long and useless, just want a simple way to store geraniums , not hating on this girl , saw a lot of these videos and they are terrible
WOW for the geraniums!!
I have not overwintered geraniums before, but it looks to me it might be a great success! Thanks for teaching us! And sweet Max is getting big, ❤️
I think I'm going to have to try that with geraniums! Very cool!

I have never done that before but very interesting in seeing how they are doing. I will try it next year.

I usually take some cuttings to grow over winter. This is an interesting way to hold them over, not too much longer you can get them potted up.
They look great Jes

They sure are!

Amazing that they bloom in s bag without water. Hopefully it’s successful for u
Enjoyed hope they survive may try next fall.
Just a thought. Maybe you should remove the blooms? They might be using energy that the plant might need? ❄️💚🙃
I thought about that. I may do that on a couple and try it out both ways!

We kept ours to long in the bag and they dried out. Heard that you should mist them if dry, so they don't dry out.
Oh no! im sorry that happened. Yes mine were very dry too I had to list them for sure
