- Haunting video shows the last moments of a 22-year-old college student who went missing on her hike. In the video, Lifei Huang hummed a tune as she set for a hike on California's notorious Mount Baldy. Mount Baldy, about 50 miles outside Los Angeles, is one of the deadliest peaks in the U.S. Due to a snowstorm, the search for the young woman had to be called off over the risk of avalanches. However, her sister believes she will be found alive.
We lost an actor there in Mount Baldy, but I hope we don’t lose a college student as well.

My family has lived in Baldy the last 60 years and that trail is a road that leads to the ski lifts, there is a trail that cuts off from that road that goes by the Sierra Hut and then further up to the top of Baldy and Devils Backbone. If she stayed on that road that is in the clip she took she would have been fine but if she veered off on the trail to the HUT then that could be where she got lost. Just down a little ways from the Sierra Hut there is a creek bed that has a couple of silver mines that at the end leads to a huge cliff. I hiked there with my cousin years ago and that drop off was terrifying, we had to crawl up the side of the mountain to get out of there and that was in the summer. My point being if she went off on a trail you can loose that trail quickly especially in winter.
I pray she will be okay and found quickly.
Is it common to hike alone and why can't steep cliff be easily avoided? Thanks

It was easier hiking down but to go back up the way we originally went it was too hard and we found ourselves at the end of a creek bed that was a waterfall during heavy rain season. Even though it was dry when we hiked it we had to crawl back up the side of a cliff on our belly’s and I just remember looking back behind me and we were a hundred feet up from the bottom. I will never go there again. I’m just saying no body ever plans to get in a bad situation it just happens and you’re stuck or have to be rescued. Always Always stay on a road when you hike areas you’re not familiar with. Have fun but be safe.

As an Alaskan winter mild hiker/camper.
My instinct tells me not to wonder too far away from the main road in case of an emergency, especially if you're not familiar with the area or the weather is really bad.
True, but if no one comes for hours, you can't stay there forever. You eventually need some sort of shelter and food.

Update: An drone operator found her body off trail. SAR recovered her the next day due to weather.
There should be a requirement for hikers to carry a personal size emergency locator beacon a lot of these tragedy's could be avoided. Like A rental for hiking Mt Baldy.

They knew the risk and want go to these dangerous places during the riskiest time of year, sad situation, but they made the decision.
I feel bad that rescuers have to risk their lives searching for people who choose to hike in this area knowing the risk.
I bet she fell in a tree well, you won’t be able to move or scream because snow will just fall on you and you’ll become trapped. happens often enough and pretty devastating if that’s the case.
Yep. You can be as well prepared as you possibly can be... but you fall into a tree well with no one to see or hear you? You're as good as dead. Hopefully she is found alive - but I doubt it.

@@steve3po13 A tree well is the space around a tree under its branches that does not get the same amount of snow as the surrounding open space. This means the snow isn't quite as packed down under a tree, and there's a lot of air that hasn't escaped... you can fall in one and get totally buried. They're deadly.

If she had a newer iPhone, she could have used the SOS button to get help even if there was no cellular access on the mountain. That said, I don’t know what kind of phone she had. She most likely fell and lost control of her phone when she did. She was hiking alone late in the day at about 7000 feet elevation and quickly the winds increased to 40 mph with heavy blowing snow, I am sure her visibility was zero. Sadly her surviving 5 days up there is very unlikely since she was only prepared for a day hike.

Poor woman I hope they find her. They should not have stopped the search. I feel so sorry for her sister. There must’ve been somewhere they could’ve rescued her. I don’t understand how they didn’t find her. This could’ve been prevented. I think I wish this girl didn’t have to suffer like this with her she’s Asian or not everyone deserves the same type of help in an emergency.

My husband and I backpacked in mount baldy and spent the night very high up. Our tent was surrounded by deer. It was eerie to be up there all secluded but beautiful. And yes, it can be a very treacherous hike so people have to be cautious

I hope hiker is found alive. Angeles national Forest/mt. Baldy needs to be closed to the public in the winter or at least during bad weather events... Too many deaths and missing people. I don't understand why they didn't, knowing the forecasted rain/snow, close the trail heads and take more preventative measures.
Almost died there 10 years ago. I did mountain biking on a trail that didn't really exist and fell off a cliff, I dangled on a rock for half an hour before finding the strength to climb back up. my bike fell 300 feet onto rocks. Never bought another mountain bike again. I think it took me almost two hours to walk back down the mountain, right before sunset and I saw my friends at the cars, Thank god if it was any later the darkness likely would've got me lost. I thought I was an experienced biker, but I went from my local trails straight to Mt. Baldy. I'll never try to attempt to do things that will risk my life again.
Why do something that dumb like that to begin with? When you know the risks?

Her sister is in denial and can’t admit that she shouldn’t have been out there in those conditions.
Unfortunately, last Saturday her body was found by a citizen flying a drone.. sad situation.. hoped she’d be found alive and well..

It is very sad but at the same time i cannot understand why would someone hike in snow leisurely? I mean just go there, enjoy the view and go home. I read she went there 2pm. Does she plan to stay overnight? Just the thought of peeing in that weather removing that snow suit is not a nice experience. Is the goal to reach the top of the mountain like mt. Everest?

Hiking alone is fine. But trying to hike Mt. Baldy in winter with an impending snowstorm on the way is daft. Even if she'd had 5 people with her, they all would have died.

Not if the birds and coyotes get to her first. They found the skeletal remains of someone where I live recently. Wildlife had scattered the bones pretty good after about 3 years of being missing.
