I feel so vindicated! I’ve been fasting since 1989, either eating every other day instead of every day, or just eating one meal a day, simply because I realised that I preferred to eat the foods I love less frequently than the tedium of calorie-counting.
Every single person in my life criticised me and warned me that I was risking heavens knows what.
And yet, here we are, 30 years later, and I’m proved right! I love it!

@@Followyourbliss-2 I alternated (over the years) between eating one fillet steak with tomatoes and lemon juice every day, once a day, and eating every other day - but eating whatever I wanted on those days. So, pasta, cream, cakes, whatever.
I also always made exceptions if there were special occasions - I never made the fast more important than the occasion.
If I was doing the fillet steak/tomato/lemon diet and I was invited to a birthday party of whatever, I always ate all the party food and then just returned to normal the next day.
Throughout either of these two types of fasting, I drank black coffee with sugar, or coca-cola, and plenty of them. Of course I wasn’t consuming any other sugar foods, so it was doable. No diet drinks, I’d rather have real sugar than heaven’s knows what in diet drinks.

I was on Metformin for two years. It made me so sick and I was eating Pepto Bismol like smarties. My doctor changed the dose three times and I still felt sick. He also explained that I can't heal myself via diet. I threw the meds away. I gave up sugar and carbs, I did intermittent fasting, and took berberine. My glucose level is now normal, my blood pressure is now normal, and I've lost 16 pounds.

I also avoid all processed foods, and, instead of bread made with wheat flour, I eat Scandanavian rye flat bread. You also have to watch the carbs, beans are healthy but most are high in carbs, so, I switched to lentils for my soups. They are higher in protein and lower in carbs and are cheap and easy to use.

Same in Canada, it's so normal and expected to eat unhealthy and drink alcohol & pop that I feel the pressure to justify myself when I do something different. It's annoying how people are like "what's wrong how come you're not drinking, have some pizza" etc., and I notice people who justify it with cultural/religious reasons get a lot mote respect and no further pressure, meanwhile if you just say "I don't eat/drink this" people will try to convince you like you're a loser for refusing.

I have used this idea in the past. Light lunch at 11am. Light dinner at 6pm. Nothing but water in between. Plus skipped dinners completely on Weds and Sats. Walked 4miles every single day. Dropped 43 lbs in 10 months. It's been 4 years. I have only gained 5lbs over that time. My skin is healthier. I look like 33-35 yrs old when my real age is 54. Literally every parameter is in the healthy range. I feel happier, lighter, and overall the world feels a happier place.

It sounds good/fine, but it (obviously) doesn't carry much helpful truth it itself. Salt and honey can last on a shelf till the end of time, but they are metabolized in the body in less than an hour.
So, one of the next questions that arises is: so what if it lasts a long time inside the body? So what? Is it "long time in body (probably) = bad"? There's probably an explanation somewhere, and I'm not necessarily sceptical, but it really highlights the reasons I don't like such slogans.

Well the quote she said was about substances that you can't recognize when you read the label. Honey and salt we all know what is, but you buy bread and its supposed to have only 3x ingredients ( flour, water and salt, yeast starter in sourdough is also pure flour and water, nothing else) and yet the one in the shop has 20+ ingredients out of which 15 we don't have a clue. That's the point she was making and the quote summarised it perfectly.

I did a 5-day water fast and healed a lower back pain that was so debilitating I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes at a time and hadn’t exercised in 2 years. I lived on Aleve. I did the fast in February, and I have never had a day of pain since. I started intermittent fasting at the end of January. I have lost over 30 lbs (I started at 154 lbs). I can and do exercise now, my depression is gone and life is finally good again. I’m 67 and feel better than I did at 50. Highly highly recommend the 3-5 day water fast for healing.

    • @TampaSuburbs

I can attest to that! I've done several 3-5 day water/tea/ electrolytes only fasts and I've had healing in my body almost every time. My last fast, within 48 hours I saw an improvement in my frozen shoulder, my reach was 3 inches higher. I broke the fast but did a very strict keto for another 5 days. Then I did another 55-hour water/ electrolyte only fast And I saw more improvement. And then I continued to eat very low carb. So within just a few weeks, my frozen shoulder went from being about 40% healed to about 90% healed. They say it's supposed to take over one year to heal a frozen shoulder, but I did it in just a matter of weeks by fasting! My range of motion is almost back to normal again! Funny thing is, I was fasting to lose weight, I had no idea that it would affect my frozen shoulder. So that was a bonus!

When you do a longer fast like a 3 to 5 day water fast are you also going to work? I would think that it would be hard to do this in a working environment. I often get lightheaded, dizzy, and have zero energy to work out when I’m doing a 24 hour fast, and when I push it beyond that I spend most of the time in bed so I don’t eat when I try and go for a run which I would normally do in my daily life. I feel lightheaded and dizzy, and I reach more coffee, which makes me more tired , but I can push through that exhaustion and force myself to work out and do some strength training. I go to another realm and then all of a sudden I’m not hungry and I’m not dizzy anymore. At the end of the workout, I often feel tired, but for some stupid reason, I always end up breaking my fast at that point so that I can get something to eat and have a good day. The next day is the dumbest thing I end up doing I should just go to bed and extend my fast for the next day, but I’m always thinking I don’t wanna feel lightheaded and dizzy the next day. I’d rather have some food in my system so I can get a good workout in. But, once I break fast and I have my dinner and I go to bed I end up waking up two or three hours later and eating again and going back to bed and then the next day I’m really tired

French use apple cider vinegar to prepare natural sauce for salad:
    - half tablespoon of mustard
    - 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
    - 2 tablespoon of oil (olive, sunflower, nut, whatever you like, I used to mix two different oils)
    - salt and pepper (moderately)
If the taste of the vinegar is too harsh (I don't know the percentage in different countries), add a little bit of water (1 tablespoon).
This is excellent for any salad.

If I may comment, I have been on Ozempic for just over a year now and have lost 46 lbs. Initially I resisted the suggestion from my Dr. to go on it, because I felt like it was cheating. However after trying dozens of times to lose weight and being a woman in her 60's who doesn't have to worry about earning a living, I felt desperate enough to do it. The results were immediate and fast. Fortunately I had minimal side effects. The thing that has fascinated me the most, though, is how losing weight has changed my life. I swim four times a week, I have continued my intermittent fasting, I feel strong and powerful in my body, and my health has vastly improved. I feel like I can do anything! So for me the combination of the Ozempic and the changes I have been able to make in my lifestyle have been empowering and I feel fantastic about myself. I live in Europe, i come from eastern Europe. I remember when the pre-packaged hamburger rolls arrived to us when I was a kid, my mum would warn me they could be causing cancer. They tasted weird, like plastic and sugar, so it made sense to me. Sometimes my teenage friends would buy them for a fancy evening dinner. I didn't understand what they are for in US, I couldn't imagine people would actually eat them on a daily basis. They were tasty but clearly didn't taste like actual food, I was worried they would get stuck in my gut, like some foreign object.
When I was 25 I went to Canada for a student exchange and was shocked at how shitty the food was, both in supermarkets and take away. And how hard was it to find fresh food, I felt almost like some weirdo. People were shocked I was looking for a student apartment with a kitchen. For me it was the only way to actually survive.
I've been reading food labels since they started appearing in my country, and I already knew that all the colorful American prepackaged food is full of junk. I never even look at those shelves in our supermarkets. Not that our packaged food is great, but I still believe there's a tendency.
It's so unfair to people who grew up in that reality of processed only food, I think when you grow up like this, you don't realize all this, as it is all you know. I feel so lucky to consider a cucumber picked up from a field a regular thing rather than some "fancy" organic expensive food.
It seems there's some stigmatization or aura of magic/specialness assigned to a desire to eat healthy organic food in US? I think maybe it's nothing special, it's the other way round - it's just that your regular food is junk 🙈 I don't understand how that's even legal tbh. And very sorry for all the people who are tricked into fighting with their weight because of it.
I know many people in Europe don't think about this topic as much as me. Many also buy the American packaged food. I think the more east the more aware people are however. And of course we also have obese people. But I can't imagine not becoming fat if I had to live in Canada longer. I put on 5kg in 3 months while I was there, and lost it as soon as I came back, with no effort. I however developed digestive issues afterwards hmm.. I felt miserable health wise in Canada, and I know it was the food.

My mom was the best and taught me how to eat properly. She cooked from scratch! If we were hungry before dinner , too bad, she gave us a carrot then told us to wait and play outside, period. We then played outside more. After dinner we had one snack like fruit, nuts or buttered bread. Cookies or cake was for birthdays or holidays only. Soda as well, they were treats. All I see now in the aisles are processed crap. My husband and I eat lean meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, eggs, some dairy, some carbs but good ones like brown rice , oatmeal. Of course some condiments in moderation. Full fat dressing. Our cholesterol is in normal range and our glucose levels. Weekends we go out once for whatever we want. That’s it. We are within our bmi, we work out. Dumbbell work outs, walk our dog. We’re in our late 50’s. And drink water throughout the day. We keep it simple.

My husband had difficulties with fasting long hours and wasn’t losing weight. Ozempic helped him “kick start” the weight loss and became accustomed to not eating which led to longer fasting windows and portion control. He lost cravings for sweets during this process. In 3 months he lost 12-15 lb. All these things would have happened without Ozempic, however, it made it easier for his brain to adjust. After 3 months he quit Ozempic because his body allowed him to fast without the irritability and cravings (not to mention cost). 9 months later, he does OMAD 4-5 days a week and the other days he has a 6-7 hour eating window. Best of all he gained control. 9 months later ( without Ozempic), he lost about 25-30 lb and gained muscle. He went from waist size 38” to 34”. Bottom line,,, each person has strengths and weaknesses, do what works to get you to where you need to be. ❤❤❤

While yes different methods may work, I can say with confidence as a 54 yo woman with type 2 diabetes for 44 years (since age 10)...6 small meals worked when I was young for a time but 20 years ago that no longer applied. Over time eating any carbohydrate and yes that includes fruit, eating every few hours will cause insulin resistance. Your body now is producing too much insulin all day long. Eating a carb requires insulin and then your sugar drops necessitating the need to eat once again. Once that cycle is broken by a low carb diet and fasting you are no longer hungry every few hours. It saved my life and got me off all diabetic meds and insulin. No more high cholesterol or high blood pressure. I never count a calorie and I eat until satiated. 4 years of this lifestyle and going strong 😊 115@Blessed1985

You are an amazing human being. Your RUclips videos bring order to my life. Thank you. I am a survivor of severe emotional child abuse. It never goes away. My own mother was my abuser and my only sibling was manipulated by her to abuse me also. Enough of that. I have always had to read books to understand myself, my life and how to navigate life. She taught me absolutely nothing but she did apologize on her death bed for how she treated me. That only let me know that she knew she was hurting me. I forgave her. Now I am alone in the world and I’m scared all the time. When I listen to your podcast it brings peace because now I have answers that my patients should have given to me. I’m 67 years old now but I still feel like a kid. I have dual personalities and I know you understand why. I have no friends because I don’t trust people but I have a great time interacting with people. I don’t have company. This podcast is a game changer for me. I am morbidly obese because I stress eat. The doctor said food and exercise are tool we can use to create our own toolbox for our own health. It’s just little words attached to concepts that make a difference. So now I know about fasting and how I can fix my obesity situation. I want to live a long time. I want a do over so I can live like a champion. I have no family nor a support system so people like you are a huge part of helping me understand what I should have gotten from a supportive family. I’m going to get my Libby Library app and find fast like a girl and follow this doctor so I can heal my obesity. I’m also taking an online course to become a certified personal trainer, a nutritional couch and a corrective exercise specialist. I want to help people who have been abused but specifically help people understand how they need to fuel and exercise their bodies so they don’t deteriorate as they age. I’m thankful for this podcast because it is a roadmap to where I’m trying to go. I hope to be invited on your show one day. What an honor it is to be on your platform to bring truth to the world that is hidden by our agencies that are supported to keep us safe except for their desire for money. So thank you and God bless you and your family. I so much wiser because of you.😮😢🎉🎉❤

My chronic pain went away, my fatty liver was no more, my skin tags went away, and other annoyances went away as well. I can’t thank fasting enough. I didn’t have to reduce calories-I just had to change my eating window!!! It has killed the food noise I used to deal with and I no longer have guilt or fear around food! I also crave healthier foods and processed foods aren’t as attractive to me anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I still consume them sometimes. I am still a modern human, after all. Next to every hospital there should be a health clinic where 'patients' should be referred to specialists like this amazing lady to retrain themselves and be empowered to take charge of their health. This dream clinic will include nutrition training, yoga, weigt lifting, functional training, dance, counselling etc. She nailed it when she said that doctors prescribe medicines with no consideration of a more holistic approach. When my dad died suddenly relatively young I felt so betrayed as I realised he was a victim of a lack of information, and lack of support for 50 year old smokers back in the 90s. Then seeing my mum a few years ago going from chemo to chemo swallowing so many pills with no doctor offering a programme of exercising, counselling or quitting smoking nothing made sense. I love all these programmes now that help us with our mindset against everything we are bombarded with. But still... there is so much that needs to be done for the younger generation who live on sugar and processed food.

Really great interview! I love her support for the “regular woman”.
The diagnostic methods of looking at the whole body - feet, eyes, nails, hair, skin, menstrual blood flow, tongue coating ect is all based on Classical Chinese medicine diagnostic techniques. All classically trained Chinese medicine practitioners do this in their practice all day. We combine those objective findings with the patients subjective experience and treat people, not symptoms.
I would love to see you interview any leader in the field of Chinese medicine - for example, Heiner Fruehauf or Jeffrey Yuen, would be an amazing addition to to your show as opposed to primarily interviewing internet celebrities who have a lot of airtime already.
Chinese medicine is a thousands year old comprehensive evidence based medical system, I would love for it to have more airtime.

That's a tough call so I always fall off the wagon on a faily regular basis. But with a water only fast a couple of times a year, it manages to keep me lean where it matters - visceral fat. Calorie restriction doesn't work for me but fasting does. I've had a few goes at it over the years and it's always helped me lose weight. I'm doing 16:8 now everyday. On a good day when I'm busy when I'm at work which is at least 3 days a week I push that out to 18:6 and quite often 19:5. This is what works for me (I've been doing this now for a year and I've lost around 15kg in that time) and I plan on doing it for the rest of my life. This video just emphasises to me that I'm doing good for myself. I'm 50 now and I hope that this will help me to be as healthy as possible as I age.

For anyone who hasn't started fasting and is thinking "but I'll feel starving all day", just try this. Protein shake or any very very low carb breakfast with at least 30g of protein. Eating it first in the day will help keep you feeling full for longer. See how many hours you go before feeling hungry. When you are hungry eat loads more protein. Try and go an hour extra each day before eating another meal (only if you don't feel hungry). It might take a while but your body adjusts (better than drastic changes that you are less likely to stick with). In less than a week I got to 17 hours no food without even thinking about it. Good luck.

Growing up Muslim, every year we did it. I remember as a teenager going to school all my teachers and kids gave us such a hard time practicing our faith and gave us trouble when we fasted. God commanded us to fast during the holy month of Ramadan. From dawn to sunset no food or water for 30 days. Every year Muslims walk away not only feeling closer to God but physically we all feel great, acne gone, mental clarity and so much energy. All the prophets of God fasted.

Non-Muslim here: I remember feeling a little sorry for my Muslim friends who had to fast during Ramadan. Then intermittent fasting came into vogue. After this, I then remember a conversation w Muslim friend about health benefits, & how much of their family/friends lost weight & felt healthier during Ramadan. 'Interesting point. 😊

Ameen. My oldest son just started participating in the full Ramadan this year. I came here to talk about this. I feel like our community could learn a bit from western science on how to optimize fasting and adhere more to the original tenets. I think a lot of people gorge themselves at iftar and even suhoor (at least in Morocco). We went to a restaurant once and the amount of food piled up was shocking. So much waste

Hey Stephen. Another great guest with a powerful and accurate view. Im 65 my wife 59. We have struggled with weight loss. We have been taking Mounjaro (similar to ozempic) Dr Minzi is fantastic and her ideals are sound but heres a thing we have discovered. Since injecting we have lost weight beyond our wildest dreams. But. There is an expression used called food noise. We have experienced this. Without this noise it has allowed us to learn so much about our shocking food intake without interuption from (food noise) which is for life. For us this is an exit from Mounjara

Dr. Mindy was the first person who made the idea of fasting exciting for me. It took me a while to really get into it, but I do fast for almost a year now (18:6 most of the time, every day), mainly on carnivore diet (not strict by any means), and I feel the healthiest, happiest I've ever been. What a great podcast for anyone who wants to improve their lives. Loved it!

16/8 fasting since Jan. Went from 17.1st to 14.8 (32 lbs). Don’t do it every night as I work in sales and often take clients for dinners. Still drink alcohol although I have massively cut down on the day to day casually drinks here and there. Exercise on average 3 times a week (gym or biking). Cut down processed foods (still eat some but not frequently l) Still have a takeaway or a drinking session with mates on occasion so I never feel like I’m missing out. Feel great and it’s sustainable. Most importantly the area where I’ve lost the most fat is stomach. It’s now almost flat. I’m 41 with a young family and work away a lot. I can’t recommend fasting enough. Good health to all

    WOW 😊
Never been a fan of Dr. Mindy - her positive reinforcement and enthusiasm, at times, got too overwhelming.
But this podcast and the subtle discussion, I'm a believer and a fan 🙏🏻
My journey started on 16 December 2021. Starting at 101 KGS, had wanted to get better as I had been obese all my life. 6mobths later, a shadow of my former self, waist down from 40 inches to 34 inches and weighing 68-70 KGS 😁
A combination of OMAD and PALEO worked for me. Added in half a dozen 36 hour and 48 hour fasts.
And one 72 hour water fast that turned out to be 100 hours - because of ONE BULLETPROOF COFFEE 😂
My observation - besides the fat loss, White spots on nails disappeared. My scalp recovered and dandruff was a thing of the past. My hair have been naturally oily and shiny, not greasy.
Coming back to Dr. Mindy, thank you. I am now an official member of the Mindy Project Fan Club 😊
    Thank you Doc 🙏🏻

I used to think i couldn't survive without breakfast but can successfully fast until 14:00 hrs or 15:00 hrs. I drink water in between if I feel hungry. A 30-60 minutes regular fast paced walk accelerates weight loss results.

I Dry Fast min of 20 hrs - 23 hrs everyday. I love this lifestyle. Food has no power over me. Before I started fasting I used to get the jitters & light headed if I don't eat every 4 hrs. Now, I'm not hungry all day and it also saves a lot of money on food. Fasting is FREE! You don't have to attend meetings or buy certain food. I just love it. My main goal is to maintain a healthy weight & to live a long healthy life.

I realized that I can have a huge amount of control over my weight and overall health. I am 70 years old. My GURD and irritable bowel disease are under control now. I was able to remove 3 prescriptions I was taking each day. Now that’s empowerment!

@@noeldeal8087 Whilst men have a 24-hour hormonal cycle (short summary: testosterone peaks in the morning and tapers down for the rest of the day and resets overnight), women have a 28 day hormonal cycle.
For two weeks oestrogen is on the rise, and then peaks alongside 24 hours of testosterone in the mix and a dash of progesterone. This peak in the hormonal cycle is when a woman is ovulating. The female body has built this hormonal cocktail so that the woman gets laid (peaking oestrogen + testosterone = horny) and the hormones can facilitate a fertilised egg to implant itself on the uterine wall. Once pregnant, a whole new slew of hormones come in alongside lots of rising progesterone.
When a woman doesn't get pregnant, she also experiences a rise in progesterone. That's why the symptoms the 1-2 weeks before your period is due can be similar to pregnancy symptoms. Increased appetite, emotional sensitivity, inability/aversion to high intensity workouts, etc. Once your period arrives the progesterone drops and oestrogen begins to rise once more, and the cycle begins again.

You are all a real inspiration. This is what I need to do. My so-called gastro specialist was one of the "fasting destroys your gut" folks. I was put onto a 6-small-meal-a-day diet for 6 weeks to reset my stomach and help my gastritis. That diet was awful. I have never felt SO sluggish. I felt like it had done me more harm than good, but everyone looked at me like I was crazy, and I am now at my heaviest weight (need to lose 15kg).
