- APOLOGIES FOR THE FLOOR SHOT at the beginning and end but I was trying a new recording method.
In this technical guitar ramble (not a lesson, more like a lecture), guitarist Marshall Harrison covers an important technique to help you think more like a pianist. First, he covers the genesis of SWYBRYD in 2002 and some intermediate SWYBRYD exercises. Then he shows how RIO (Repeat In Octaves) simplifies extended range scales and arpeggios. He then describes Bruno Economy Picking to economize picking in an imperfect world as opposed to Gambale Economy picking (Perfect World).

So glad this power is in responsible hands. Incredible.
Marshall you really are a guitar genius.
Can't believe I stumbled on this goldmine of a lesson! Very well done! \m/
Hey marshall! You have quickly become my favorite musician to hear from. Thanks for putting your techniques out there man!
I love your version of Swybrid, And since I discovered it just a few days ago, I have not stopped practicing it. I feel like a kid getting a new toy. And I make sure when I post videos I say Marshall Harrison style swybrid!! Take care Marshall!
Thank you, Brad!
Btw, I spell my version “SWYBRYD”
SWYBRYD does make many aspects extremely easy. Enjoy?
Nice thank you! I will definitely make sure I spell it correctly going forward. And yes it has been like a whole new experimental ground, I've been doing exactly what you did, disecting Eugene's trick bag, and basically using it as a launching pad for practicing the technique. Now I've gone back to some of my original songs and made the strumming pattern sound way more complex lol. I dig it bro
Who the he'll would dislike this is pure gold
this is the most terrifyingly brilliant guitarist I've seen in my life.
Dude -great channel. I totally appreciate any shred tech content. This channel instantly jumped into my short list!
Amazing lesson. Great coverage of how to play the guitar efficiently with these concepts
Marshall your videos are always cool and helpful for those that are looking to improve their technique.
Love it! Especially the pentatonic lick. Thanks for sharing!
Please Marshall, never stop!! Love this videos!
The sound is just unreal. I really want to start practicing this.
Cool, views and subs are boosting up!
And video + playing are again phenomenal.
Damn! That 60 frames per second looks smooth as! Great video, as always!
This guy is the coolest. Thank you for sharing 🙂
That's a cool lesson and a very nice demonstration of the swybrid techique. I'm working on your cycling Penatonic Lick. Usually I'm not an economy picker, but I find that swybrid technique so useful in several playing situations. Keep up the good work Marshall. ;-)
you are AMAZING,, Great guitar playing..the best shred guitar player out there. this video is insane
Mr. Harrison, you've got unbelievable technique and playing, plus you're always sharing your knowledge with us for free. Thank you very much for your kindness!!!
Great video quality, as well!!!
P:S no more videos of integrals? (I loved them!)
Just bought a couple of your books. I suppose I have my work cut out for the next 3 generations. Thanks for sharing MH.
Wow, what an upgrade regarding the video quality, like it a lot :)
Thank you! I've been doing a similar thing for years, too, but not at your speed... Well done, Sir! :-)
Love the vid and the Jason Becker guitar is awesome.
You are great
I've never seen this kind of techniques
More gold! Cheers Marshall!
Crazy wild stuff !🤘🏻
THIS IS GENIUS!!
Just lifted up a random rock and found a gold mine ✨️
Help! Get this rock off me!
Damn it ! said folks whom realised this vid is one year ago and still struggle to play the Swybryd.
man - this is such a hard technique! I nearly got it as fast as you a few months ago but never use it so I'm back to learning again
Marshall, you shouldn't be apologizing....First the video quality is amazing, second you've been doing swybryd for a long time, heck you've been using your hybrid picking technique at an insane level for more years, so don't worry. We know Tosin is amazing but he can easily take notes from you. Cheers!!!
Congrats on the 12K
Thanks it's great!
Great image quality
super fantastic, thanks, Marshall!!
Thanks for sharing.. Perfect
That Jimmy Bruno method is EXACTLY how I pick those 4-3-4 patterns... or 3-4-3. I alternate when it won't sweep.
To play fast scale runs does it need to be tremblo picking speed or slower. I can go fast as lighting and hit every note muting but can't get the same sound of speed scales like neo classical. I no pattern you talking about. I read about it before play in groups of 4 or something I trying apply that. I have to go back to the books.
That's a complicated question Mike. Play slow enough to learn the techniques correctly.
Mike jr tremolo picking is usually best when you're focused on playing a single note multiple times fast. To play a scale fast you want to concentrate on your picking pattern of up and down strokes and play those cleanly and make sure the pattern uses economy of motion incorporating small 2 string sweeps. You want that to be as clean as possible, once you can play cleanly and have your form correct then you can build speed, it's a different approach from looking at it as tremolo picking.
Thank yall. I been practicing to the metronome 4ths 8ths 16ths. I can use economy n alternative picking etc. I been doing sweeps arpeggios. I watched Michael Angelo Batio as teen on vhs. I now been going back to them warm ups and I use Joe stump book that's help me alot to understand alot. I am trying to get to No Boundaries speed type.
Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SWYBRYD!!!!!!!!!!! Now I get it! All these years I thought you were picking all those notes! I saw swybryd but never had the time to really soak it in. LOL. Nice!
In this video Whenever I say “pluck” it almost always means *SOUND* the string with your picking hand’s middle finger.
Marshall, is there any rock-type guitarist (even the Shawn Lane types) that you have trouble with, or particular licks? Your chops are insane brother, I can play relatively fast but this is sooo next level!!!
I like certain nostalgia guitarists for the memories/chops. For rock Eric Johnson’s Camels night out and Paul Gilbert’s on Mr. Big’s first album blew my mind. John Petrucci on Images n Words and SV on PnW were the gold standard. Chris Poland, Reb Beach, Vito Bratta, Brett Garsed get honorable mentions.
For true challenges now I turn to Bach, Handel, Chopin, Liszt, Paganini, Wieniawski, Dohnanyi, and Czerny
@@RozarSmacco great taste, Rachmaninov and Liszt were wizards. Cheers brother 🍻
Just wishing the guitar be angled to show the picking motions as well. Super playing nonetheless
This picking system takes a lot of getting used to at least for me.
Gees. Let me go practice my scales and I'll be right back to try these techniques.
You are a Monster! :D
Siiiiick man! I shall steal accordingly :)
Be my guest Bjorn just don’t bje bjoring
@@RozarSmacco 😂😂😂😂
Genius 🎸
Loved this so much! Quality playing! Accurate as hell! Can I ask man what size pick do you use?!
Dunlop BIG STUBBY 3 mm
sweet. i can chicken pick and sweep but never thought of doing this for some reason. sounds amazing up to speed
Hey Marshall; Absolutely brilliant technique mate! But Ive been purely old school strict alternate picking for decades and I didnt even go Sweep when Gambale came up with it! Partly cos I was lazy to learn a new technique but partly as it seemed awkward to have to work out left hand fingering positions to accomodate a new picking pattern. It was almost like melody lines were being dictated by the picking method?? I know how how amazing Frank is! I did steal his 3 notes per string technique and used it in alternate picking. Then saw Allan Holdsworth using 4 notes per string...But it sounds like SWYBRYD overcomes the issue of having to design scale shapes around the picking pattern issue?? Also for arpeggios - alternate doesnt allow much fluidity and speed. How do we design left hand fingering patterns for scales and arpeggios for SWYBRYD? Is that even needed?
Am I lost now forever or where do I learn the 101 of your brilliant combo SWYBRYD picking?? Can I sign up or buy lessons or what? Im not sure where to pluck or sweep or alternate pick for it? Thanks!
love the floor shot
You should collab with Tosin Abasi! Don't know how feasible it would be but it that would be one hell of a jam session.
Sweet.
Monster!!
Roooaaaaaarrrrrr!!!!!!
First viewing of your technique. Took me a few minutes to realize that you're using your ring finger instead of the usual middle for hybrid picking. WOW.
Is he? Looks like the middle finger
Actually looks like what you say for the higher speed licks. He seems to use middle when demonstrating
Actually I use all: middle, ring, and pinkie:
@@RozarSmacco thanks for the reply man
First off awesome playing and thank you for the videos. I see thats a Jason Becker Kiesel, did you get that custom from them with the white body? Curious of where you got it. Thank you
Thanks Devin S, These Kiesel JB were a limited edition run from a few years ago. They can probably make you another.
AllI can think of whilst watching this vid is - remember how EVH used to play Eruption w/ his back to the audience, and now erryone's got a tapping lick or two they know?
Yeah, this is the next that...
Also, considering the Bruno 3-4 scales, what would you reccomend for 3-2 scale shapes like you get in Hungarian Minor for instance?
So the pick has to start with an up stroke?
Unreal picture quality! What did you switch to? It's so crisp that it almost looks 3d!
KenjisanHi hey Kenji, first of all THANK YOU SIR. I used the iPhone X NON face camera set to 4K 60 FPS.
It's because it was filmed at 60fps. It makes everything look way smoother and lifelike
Wow, I just found this. So I think I get the gist of it - he's the king of America.
Is that really how you think I came across in this vid? “King of America”? God I hope not
@@RozarSmacco No, not at all! You're just the most amazing guitar player I've ever seen! My mind is blown!
@marshallharrison
How you like the Kiesel?
It seems like the swybryd you use, is mainly for speed and economy (which is amazing). I was curious is there any swybryd lick ideas you use where it makes your sweeping or hybrid picking sequences more interesting?? So basically using it for sequence ideas rather then economy is what I mean. Hopefully that doesn't make me look arrogant.
Yes I will do the next video in the series about the vastly more complex sequences/shapes possible with SWYBRYD.
@@RozarSmacco Awesome man!
I'm really not used to hybrid picking but I'm looking for ways to increase my speed, trying this swybrid method feels really strange, and I feel like my plucking finger is just getting in the way all the time whenever I try to use it. Will keep trying though, thanks for sharing your wisdom!
give it time. be patient young Skywalker.
hi marshall. thanks for the amazing videos! so you said you play 4-notes-per-string ASCENDING scale: d,u,d,u,pluck,d,u,d(sweep). but how do you play 4-notes per string DESCENDING?
:(U-d-u-Pull-Off-u-d-u-u): repeat (4-3 scale)
@@RozarSmacco thanks
can you send the book livestream licks 1 to Spain? Do you have shipping cost? Thank you
rafagaguitar I will send you a pdf file that you can print out.
That blues lick is very Zakk Wylde. When you double up it sounds like the end of the No More Tears solo.
The Machine, And I YES. I loved that album songs, solos, ZAKK’ s tone etc. I got to play “I don’t wanna save the world” with Randy Castillo years later when he played drums for a Black Sheep gig.
Marshall Harrison - Guitarist That's awesome, man. I used to listen to No More Tears on repeat, along with Randy's two Ozzy albums back in the day. The tone on NMT was as thick as molasses.
with a heavy heart loving yngwie gilbert and jason becker and always comparing and saying no man my favourites are better than yours i have to say marshall harison is from now on the best guitarist i ever heard in my life.seeing him for the first time was like seeing yngwie in '85 compared to other guitarists of that time.Marshall did to me the same feeling when i saw him in the swybrid excercise with guilberts patters :)
What a god
12:28 wow, I can really hear the Simpsons lydian in there. Thats cool 😁
2:35 3:01 4:10 6:02 10:57
Jimmy Bruno is from Philadelphia

Such a wealth of knowledge here. Unfortunately I feel like you have to come to it with a wealth of knowledge to understand. It all goes by so fast (no pun intended) that I’m not grasping the concepts.
Can I answer any questions here? What did you hear that was “ungraspable”??
@@RozarSmacco Well you know I think it’s because I’m a visual person. I couldn’t quite see at times what finger was on what fret on what string. I’m also one who learns through repetition. So if you could go through the pattern twice, slowly, I’m quite certain I could get it. It’s very motivational when you play it at full speed but please start with the slow demo a few times. The lessons you’re offering are clearly valuable. I’d love to learn them.
Wow a Jason Becker Vader. Noice
Jimmy Bruno’s problem with not being able to keep up is that he doesn’t use his wrist but his elbow when he picks. A big limitation imo
No he couldn’t keep up cause he was alternate picking which is ok until you have to change strings then you got a problem. It’s nearly impossible to keep up with jazz piano or sax while alternate picking mixed arpeggio, scalar, intervallic jazz lines. He adopted a general type of economy picking or sweep and the results speak for themselves.
I wanna see Marshall up against Jack Butler
Ahh Hhh interesting
Are you plucking with ring finger here ? It looks like it
Yes. Yes I am.
Omg
Big stubby fo lyfe
What is hilarious to me is Marshall is talking normally about "three four scales" and his playing sounds jacked up, like the video is sped up...but it's not.
Yes I should’ve explained “3 4 scales” I meant to say 3 note per string then 4 note per string repeat in next octave. For example, starting on low E: 12 14 15 then A string: 12 14 15 17 then D: 14 16 17 then G: 14 16 17 19 then B: 17 19 20 then E: 17 20 22 24. But Gambale’s principle says even number of notes per string is NOT SWEEPABLE so we use Jimmy Bruno’s formulation of Guitar Economy: when going from lower string to higher after playing an EVEN # notes per string use a DOWNSTROKE
@@RozarSmacco great Marshall that is a pretty easy way to get some speed happening .
I had no idea that was an octave lick untill you explained it.
Bruno's from Philly. Not NYC
Duly noted. Ty
Sounds EXACTLY like Zakk Wylde's sweeping technique.
RhythmOvPain I thought so too. It screams No More Tears!
Why do i get the feeling you can freestyle better than tosin haha
Tosin is nowhere near your level of playing.
Good stuff so much better then that chump Troy Grady and his cartoons
