    I like his explanation of how he came up with the changelings, it reminds me of a story I ran for my group where they went to a village that wasn't a village at all. It consisted of 20-30 Doppelgängers, Oni and other shapeshifters who acted out 250 people, changing into a new person everytime they left the party's view. The building and items in the village were all mimics.

    Prior to the official release, I had created a Changeling from a homebrew, named Gin.
    Initially, the party didn't know he was a changeling...he assumed the identity of a half-elf named Tricky Nym Suda. Little things tipped them off, though...the fact that he couldn't see in the dark with Darkvision, which he brushed off as a phobia of darkness.
    When it was revealed that he was a changeling, they realized that "Tricky Nym Suda" was actually a "tricky pseudonym"...or fake name.
    He'd developed multiple aliases of other races, with each name being another word for "fake":
    Tabaxi Cleric: Mirageh of Lys - or, "Mirage of Lies"
    Human Wizard: Declan Stein - or, "Clandestine"
    Dwarven Merchant: Yuri Goodforge - or, "Good forgery"
    Foreign Royalty: King Phoebus Ubaxta - or, "Backstabbing Fake"
    Human Performer: Torstun Jack - or, "Just an actor"
    Loving the new skill that allows changelings to impose disadvantage by making themselves look frightening...it appeals to the more alien nature of their race.

      I'm currently planning a Changeling in a campaign myself. He's a Warlock with the Seeker Pact. In his backstory he was a member of a wandering tribe of Changelings but was abandoned by the group when he refused to give up a Persona named Muse that he'd created and grown quite attached to using. He'd become a rather good Entertainer and he enjoyed the attention he got as a beautiful half-elf girl but his growing fame threatened both himself and his people with exposure. For some time, he continued his travels alone and eventually almost forgot he was a Changeling altogether. One day he almost dropped his shapechange after a grueling performance and fled to a nearby moonlit hill for some privacy. It was there that he met the goddess of magic, Mystra, in the form of an enigmatic young woman. She chided him on hiding the truth from himself and made an offer to help him find it. He now travels around to uncover ancient arcane secrets and long lost lore on her behalf in exchange for a suitably epic journey of self-discovery.
      It's a rather simple story but it makes him pretty unique among Warlocks. He didn't make his Pact to gain power. He made the Pact to grow as a person.

      My current character is very slightly similar! She uses a disguise of her former mentor, a middle aged high elf, and our party is currently in the dark about her real identity. I use the fact she's "middle aged" as to why she can't see well and play off her not knowing some things to her being "old and forgetful." Changelings are great if you really want to do some fun RP stuff. Not always going with the most optimal race for your class can be hellllllla fun.

    Absolutely relate to the idea of a Doppelganger society. In my current setting I have a deity of lies and deception they can become affiliated with that essentially allows them to become a version of a Simulacrum. Full access to memories, abilities and spells but cannot heal (and other drawbacks) in order to set them apart from the "lazy personality" of the Monster Manual stat block. Among other traits they tend to appreciate creatures like Mimics and Quasits that can change their shape as well usually keeping them as pets, familiars and companions.
    Can't wait to incorporate some of these ideas, Eberron is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

    Paik is an orphan born in a small town, everyone knew he is a changeling so noone adopted him (since noone likes them) and grew up in the orphanage. He always liked animals, reading books and woods. Once he was in the woods and a bear attacked him but a tiefling ranger saved him and (basically) adopted him. The tiefling (his name was Reinor) taught him how to use crossbows, short swords and a spell 'talk with animals'.
    On one day, when they were walking through the woods, two orcs attacked them. Paik managed to escape them, but the orcs killed Reinor, ever since that day he had his tiefling mask. Paik was alone again until he met a family of four raptors. The mother raptor named Zora adopted him and 'raised' him with her three other children. When Paik grew up he left his raptor family with his raptor brother Nox as a companion/mount and became an adventurer.

    I’m playing a changeling who was being taught to be an assassin, but before he could finish training he ran away. Basically during training, him and other changeling were punished if they were to change form without an order. He was taught like this basically since birth and when he ran away as a teen, it was weird for him at first. And now he has a few personas for certain things. (Being a smuggler). Would be interesting to see if he encounters another changeling again. Changelings are rare in the world my DM made.

  • @nickm-s
    @nickm-s 6 лет назад +4

    I’ve been thinking up a changeling character recently (haven’t ever played a game myself but I’ve been interested for a while). The changeling was rescued from a group a people that found out what they are by a monk training at a nearby school who then took them on a student for their final test. (Prove your knowledge by teaching it to someone else). During their training the changeling started to fall for the young monk. After a couple months of the training the school and the village was attacked and burned down. Upon the changeling finding their monk lover dead amount the ruins they take on their likeness and use the skills learned to hunt down who ever was responsible, all the while hiding what they are from the rest of the group at all costs because of what happened last time they were found out. This is my first attempt at a character backstory any thoughts, advice or criticisms are more then welcome.

    • @joeljohnson3365
      @joeljohnson3365 6 лет назад

      I mean the backstory so far is pretty intriguing, I am not sure if you have or haven't yet but fleshing out the specifics about the relationship, like what it was that your character liked about the monk that made them fall in love with them. this could also be explored in how the changeling plays the part, would they act as the monk how they remember them, focusing on the traits about them that made them fall in love? would they act very defensive of anyone who insults them, not because they are offended themselves, but because they take it as the person insulting the monk they love? so tldr the backstory is fine, you just need to flesh out the reasoning behind choices and the consequences of those choices.

    • @nickm-s
      @nickm-s 6 лет назад

      Joel Johnson that’s a interesting idea, playing the idealised person they remember acting how you hope they’d act not how they might actually. And the defensive thing could be interesting if I could pull it off without coming across as whiny. I’m also thinking maybe it wasn’t necessarily a shared love, maybe the changeling had feeling for the monk but they didn’t reciprocate those feelings. Maybe something is discovered down the line and how would the changeling react to that?

    I am playing a changling in the mad mage and did play it in waterdeep heist. My backstory was I was born in sigil from changlings that got stuck there. I go out and I am surviving in waterdeep. I spent the entire water deep campaign avoiding letting my party know I was a changling.

    Here’s a Changling character persona I want personal opinions on. A half elf who constantly wears a mask who was raised by Changlings after being left out on the streets as a child, most likely using the basterd rout, they sort of adopted him for a number of reasons. Sympathy, could make it so they seem like a actual regular family, and a sort of practiced or their actual children to disguise themselves as. He would constantly play a Changling game with his adoptive siblings using a plain mask. Practicing acts as different people and scenarios with it on. Later in years the Changling family is discovered and skinned by wizards/hunters to make disguise self items, shout out to Monty on unexpectables, except for the half elf boy. They just beat him to a near bloody pulp, red hot poker to the eye, scaring across the face and body, maybe a missing ear or toe, and slit of the throat scar. Then thrown into the gutter to die but saved by a cleric. And now continues the way of life of his adoptive family of impersonation, spying, forgery, and such; class is rogue assassin. Constantly wearing a mask to hide he scars and a reminder of his family. Personality: Hides pain and sadness with a smiling optimistic actor, with a little sadistic side, kinda feel. Truth be told half that story is actually true. Except: he and two of his siblings survived because they were rescued by a neighboring kingdom, I was kinda thinking a sorta warrior princess kinda deal to add a bit of romance to the character’s backstory and future story plot, and now works as a spy/assassin for said kingdom to repay a the debt that is owed and to give his younger siblings protection and a normal, if not wealthy, life. I couldn’t decide to go assassin or mastermind because both seem similar in their roles of espionage but the assassin had much more perks for that role. By the way the character is not evil or anything mischievous in anyway. If I had to describe the personality he is actually a kind dude, no need to worry about betrayals or stealing from the party. He fits in moral lines gray but leans towards good. Neutral good or lawful neutral is where I would generally put him. I want to play a Changling character that blurs the lines of what is good or evil. Make player characters who believe Changlings are pure evil or selfish question their beliefs. I won’t tell the party that my character is a Changling until I can truly trust them and know how they feel about Changlings and their actual plight. And until I’m sure they won’t immediately murder me for being a Changling, for lying, or for just being a rogue. I’ve heard way to many stories of PCs being murdered for being a rogue or necromancer. Even when they’ve proven that they are not evil in anyway.
    Think it’s a good persona?
    Good cover story/disguise from the party believing my character is a Changling?
    Any suggestions or tips for playing a Changling?

      Honestly, I love that??? Go for it!
      I actually was thinking about playing a changeling character, but I have an issue (I dunno if you'd be a good person to help or not, but I'll ask just in case):
      I'm kind of interested in a changeling character who's very fluid - in gender and physical form, but not in name or personality. Basically, they'd wear different forms like clothing, picking whatever they feel like being - whether it's a male tiefling, a non-binary water genasi, or a female human (or anything else - those aren't the only options). Literally whatever. It isn't a lying thing, or an issue of identity (aside from the gender thing obviously) it's just a form of expression.
      My worry is:
      1: As a cis female, is it even my place to play a genderfluid character?
      2: Is it in any way offensive or harmful to have a character who can shapeshift be genderfluid?
      Sorry if these aren't questions you know the answers to, but I figured I'd try!
      If there isn't an issue, do you like the concept? I have a more in-depth backstory idea for them that doesn't really involve all that stuff, but this is the issue I'm a little worried about.

    Came to this video to do a bit of research for my new character, she is a changeling warlock who when she made her pact the price she paid was her sanity, now her two most used personas sort of took on a life of their own and as such she randomly becomes one of three personalities, her base one, and both of her two most used personas, her mind is broken to the point she only actually knows she's a changeling if it is her base personality, I am translating this to game mechanics my rolling a d12 with a 30% chance for each after each long rest. I must admit I am quite excited to se how this character turns out.

    For the campaign my crew are currently doing I am a Changeling named Una and I was discovered alone in the woods and an ambitious priest found me and raised me as his own. So my character has no idea about other Changelings so we dropped the whole personas thing and much of the cultural things, we also made it so I can only change into a person I've seen before and only exactly as I saw them, so if someone is dying of pox and I change into them, I will also appear to have pox. We also made Changelings outlaws and the church is in charge of hunting them down and drowning them in a sacred lake so my crew has to try and keep my identity secret from any NPCs we come in contact with (which hasn't really worked out well. I have also run into people whos face I was wearing, VERY AWKWARD!) And the DM created a metal that dispells magic when coming in contact with a mage or Changeling, so they revert to their original form (which we made really grotesque) also a lot of magical effects and visions and levels of exhaustion force me to revert. So we kinda nerfed Changelings really good lol

    She has done a lot of things she is not proud of and has built up this persona as an attempt at starting anew because she wants to do better.
    But of course old habits die hard and she sometimes gets caught in the middle of sticky situations.

    Anyone else curious that a changelings true form would look like? Like as a baby do they just immediately morph into what ever their parents look like? Or are they like a grey mannequin type creature. I haven't seen official artwork yet, so maybe there's an answer I'm just not aware of.

      Shawn Ski look a little like doppelgangers but with more human features. Of I remember correctly they are naturally hairless, but some choose to give themselves hair even if they don't take on a face. Changeling babies aren't in control of their abilities so they usually copy parts of whoever they can see in front of them. This sometimes causes their parents to abandon them if the parents aren't known to be changelings and are scared of being found out.

      My changeling bard is purely unhinged, she was raised to be nothing more than a weapon and uses her personas to express herself. Her personas are neutral or good as she protects her allies and runs a business, but when in her usual form she'd snap your neck for sneezing near her no matter who tf you are, even if you were a childhood friend... I purposely made her an absolute sociopath at heart who is trying to navigate through emotions and society by mimicking others... And only "takes the faces" of those she's killed. My DM made essentially made her a boogeyman within her city, an urban legend designed to keep children in check. "If you don't behave the Lady of Faces will take you away and steal your face" 😏😂

    It's interesting, you could have several personalities but in the end you're just noone, none of those personalites are yours, you're always pretending so what reason could anyone have to trust you once they find out. I suppose philosophically one could argue that humans are the same in some respect, putting on different masks with different people, you probably don't act the same when you're with your parents, versus friends and strangers, but obviously that's to a lesser degree, hopefully.
    I keep thinking attack of the bodysnatchers, they move in, they take over some identities, they lay eggs and their population secretly grows. That's why I wouldn't want to put them in any campaign I'd make, because once you've experienced that how can you ever trust anyone ever again. And how could you ever hope to stop a threat like that. Kinda like the illusion, dream scenario, where you defeat the bad but turns out you were just dreaming you did and you're still within a dream. Once you go down that rabbit hole it all becomes pointless because now you can never truly know if you're awake or forever trapped.
    I wouldn't mind trying to play one for the opportunity to play several characters at once but I would never include them in any worlds I make, they're just too big of a threat to be allowed to exist and breeds excessive paranoia.
