- In this video Dr O'Donovan explains balanitis. Balanitis is when the head of the penis is swollen and sore. It's not usually serious but it's important to see a doctor to find out what's causing it.
What are the symptoms of balanitis?
According to NHS UK with balanitis, the head of your penis is usually swollen, itchy and sore. It usually looks red, but this may be less obvious on brown or black skin.
Other symptoms can include:
- pain when peeing
- a thick discharge that comes from under your foreskin
- bleeding around your foreskin
- an unpleasant smell
- difficulty pulling back your foreskin (though in young children it's normal to have a tight foreskin)

How to treat balanitis:
The treatment for balanitis depends on what's causing the condition. Treatments can include:
1. Antifungal creams. If a yeast infection is causing balanitis, your provider will prescribe an antifungal cream such as clotrimazole to treat the infection.
2. Antibiotics. If a sexually transmitted infection is the cause of your symptoms, your provider will treat the infection with antibiotics. The antibiotic will depend on the type of infection.
3. Thoroughly cleaning your penis more often. Your provider will recommend that you regularly wash and dry under your foreskin to reduce the risk of balanitis returning. Don't scrub or excessively wash your penis with harsh soaps. Warm water is often enough.
4. Diabetes management. If you have diabetes, your provider will show you how to manage the condition.
5. Circumcision. If you have recurring symptoms of balanitis, your provider may recommend circumcision. Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes the foreskin covering your penis.
Will balanitis go away by itself?
Most cases of balanitis require some kind of treatment. If you don't get treatment, your symptoms may get worse or you may develop more symptoms.

What do you mean by a bland cream? What about E45 or a cream containing paraffin or a cream with vitamin E? Is eucalyptus are any good? Diluted or neat?
Canesten cream cures it if due to Candida yeast infection.
At the time, I treated it with a red ointment that the dermatologist gave me (I don't remember the name) which remained there on the glans for about 20 days, and then the bidet! use the bidet to wash yourself because the water jet is better and is more guided and adjustable than that of the shower.

What worked for me like a magic is allegra tablet and lullitec cream. This cream has luliconazole in it. In just 2 days it was completely cured.

Mine was uncircumcised I can’t even pull back it was all red inching swollen and some white stuff on it. I couldn’t even walk. What I did was gently pull back using coconut oil and clean with coconut oil and warm water until white stuff was cleared 2 times a day. Coconut oil was the best solution for me as it’s anti inflammatory anti fungal.

I’m not sure exactly what it is I’m going through however I’m seeing a urologist on the 15th November 2023. My penis has been hurting for a while now and I have been to my local std clinic where I have tested negative for multiple STD’s. My last test was in June where I tested negative for chlamydia gonnorhea, syphilus, hiv and hsv, hepatitis A,B and C. However my penis has been painful since I was last sexually active receiving oral sex 5th March 2023. I’m confused as to what the symptoms could possibly be, the std doctors and nurses I’ve seen have assured me that it’s not any of the STD’s that I’ve mentioned.
Whether you have an STI, UTI or balanitis etc, antibiotics are the only solution to treat the infection. I would also recommend getting something OTC for a yeast infection if you have balanitis symptoms. Vaginal yeast infection OTC treatments will help. In my honest opinion bacteria transmission via intercourse is the root cause of this. So, antibiotics is the only foolproof to get rid of it. I can't imagine the damage this infection has caused to you in seven months. May be nothing, but you could have serious issues if this problem has been going on this long. If you would have gone to the doctor, they would have given you a urine test, and probably treated and cured this problem within a week. Think of this has having a tooth with a small cavity. If you go to the dentist right away, you can save the tooth and it will last for decades. If you put it off for several months or years, that tiny little cavity will rot your tooth all the way to the pulp, and it will have to either have root canal or be pulled. The same notion goes for the rest of your body. You have to get treatment ASAP. Good luck, man.

@@anshu979You need to see a doctor ASAP. It might seem embarrassing but letting this go could have a serious impact on your health. You need to have a urine test done first. This will narrow down the cause. It could be something minor like a yeast infection/balanitis or something more serious like gonorrhea, chlamydia or something even worse that could be potentially life threatening. If you don't want to see a doctor, you can get online treatment for gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. The problem with that is not having a urine test though. If you have a really bad UTI, it could actually make you sick enough to kill you. It could be other things too like a kidney stone. Best solution is manning up and going to the doctor.

Hi Doctor O'Donovan. I'm currentky going through Balanitis, and my foreskin swelled up like a balloon. One out of the 4 days so far it (I wish I was exaggerating), looked like an elephant trunk, before I assume the antibiotics finally staryed working. But now my foreskin is loose and stretchy. Will it ever shrink back/retighten?

It was just irritation from the bacteria. It went away after a week. Just gotta keep it clean, wash it everyday, apply a little vaseline and you’ll be fine.
If you think it might be an STD or you’re sexually active migjt be good to get checked but other than that, if it were my case we’d all be walking around with gonorrhoea lol

It kept coming back for me, for a few years, and eventually ended up causing phimosis and me needing a circumcision. If you have balinitis, try to sort it out. Don’t just live with it! I wish I’d sorted it out earlier.
Also, it seemed that if I ate something sugary, that would make it a lot worse.

I’m just not sure if it’s gone, I’ve had it for over a year, started treatment 5 months ago, creams, some pills 💊 Fast forward to today, I did a 2 week terbenifine cream and it looks healed but it’s not the same as it was before the infection. Skin is still smooth, light pink. There is some wrinkles. Flasid looks fine (doctor says it looks like a normal penis) hard looks normal ish, after I cum it gets wrinkly and the red spot that originally formed is still there
Get circumcised bro I did and I’m back to normal trust the doctors get it done recover and you’ll feel better, I learned from a doctor and therapist to stop hurting & judging your self, it’s actually normal and sometimes believe in god bec he told us to get circumcised for many conditions

@@alexdiaz8993Hi brother, don't use medicines and other antibiotics it have side effects later. All you need to do is wash cleanly atleast twice a day. And always dry after you clean, and stop mast"rbating because it will take a time. Mine is more than 4 month's now. Get well soon

I don’t think so but I had to take Doxycycline Hyclate and the pain have gone away
i had minor cuts on mine and had taken bath with soap and it caused my D to swell like a balloon. i stopped using soap and put vaseline and first 2 days i stayed in bed and once the D dried up i put more vaseline and by the 3rd day the swelling was 70% gone and now im fully healed @@hamadi603 . i may just had an allergic reaction my case may be different

apply vaseline to prevent it from getting dry. unless the doc has given u alternative and make sure it dont rub against anything lol
Here is the guide to getting rid of balanitis:
1. Wash (without soap) twice as a day
2. Apply 24 hour sensitive sensitive skin lotion once a day
3. Apply 1% Loprox AND 1%Hydrocortisone twice a day
If you follow those 3 steps it WILL go away within a week or two.
