  • We are still at the holiday cottage in mid Wales, so video quality is at 1080p (HD), instead of my usual 2.7k (UHD).
Also, some people are experiencing audio issues, with the volume being too low, but the adverts being too loud. As we are away until the 7th of February, I am still trying to upload content using a different editing software (my favoured software won’t work with my old laptop), which has very limited audio control. I can’t increase the volume level within the camera, as wind noise will cause distortion, which will definitely make it unwatchable.
Please bear with me on these issues, though I think it differs when watched on different devices. I haven’t encountered any issues on my iPad, phone or laptop.
    Thank you.
Today, we have a look at my new Speedwear Gresford, Wax Cotton Motorcycle Jacket. I did buy it in the sale (yes, with my own money), but I believe it offers excellent value for money, even at the original price, especially when compared to better known brands which are more than twice the price.
These Speedwear jackets, are made in England, using British Wax Cotton, and are excellent quality.
On this video, we have a good look at the Speedwear Gresford, before going out for a ride, to try it on the bike with my Keis Heated Jacket underneath.
If you happen to contact Speedwear, or purchase an item of clothing, please mention me. I won't get anything from them in return at the moment, but you never know, they might offer me something in the future. Thank you.
Please like, comment and subscribe, if you haven't already done so.
    Thanks for watching.

    Hi Ian
Belstaff charge so much because it is now a fashion brand and there are plenty of mugs that will pay their prices for the label. I still have mine which cost about £45 when it was just a motorcycle jacket and not a fashion icon. Your jacket looks every bit as good as Belstaff or Barbour and at a realistic non rip off price. Edward

Hi Ian. When I first started riding on my Yamaha DT175MX in the late 70’s I bought a wax cotton jacket and trousers from Kett as I couldn’t afford Belstaff. It saw me through all sorts of horrible weather into the early 80’s and it was brilliant. Hot in the summer mind you.
I turned my nose up at Belstaff and Barbour as these are now fashion brands and bought a Speedwear jacket a few years ago for under a £100. It’s more basic than yours with no protection but it’s made in the UK which is a huge plus for me. I am glad they are still made. Looking at your link I reckon mine is the Classic which I bought in a Medium which is a bit snug for the winter with thermals on.

Morning Jonathan, I too had a DT175MX, a great bike, even two up with a hefalump on the back 😂. I remember the Kett brand. I am well impressed with the Speedwear, and don’t understand how I had not heard of them before. Mine doesn’t have protection as such, a bit of extra material on the shoulders and elbows, with that pocket for a back protector. A great buy. Thank you

Good review , thank you .
You can't beat the traditional 4 pocket jacket with a belt . I'm glad to see the storm flaps on the pockets to keep the driving rain out , some of the cheapo jackets miss out this detail . I had Belstaff bike jackets for many years and never really liked them that much , the Barbour was in my opinion a better [ although more expensive jacket ] . But neither had armour , which I think is important for me as I don't bounce as well as I used to . I wore Barbour Solway jackets on the farm ,they were the best and very hardwearing , well worth the money at the time .
Once the two B brands paid celebrities to wear them , they were able to push up the price so that fashion concious and free spending trendy persons of low IQ could feel happy buying them .
Like you , I never fasten my collar and would probably cut off the buckle and flap .

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield

Thank you. The Speedwear Pulford (I think) does come with CE approved armour, and still at an exceptional price. Yes, storm flaps are a must. Cheers for the comment.

I used to own a French MotoMod waxcotton jacket many years ago when I had my Jawa 350 with sidecar in Austria and loved it literally to pieces…
The two B brand always attracted me, but as father is from Swabia and these people are known for that they are sent out from Scotland as being to stingy 😇😂 … I never made it to buy one.
Now knowing this brand which has a German site too with very reasonable prices I consider getting one!

Like you Ian mid 70’s first bike and a new Belstaff jacket. I remember it was thin cold with no actual protection and it made your shirt collar black. I did eventually get a Kett leather jacket with a blue quilted lining, looked much better but was still freezing in winter, loved that jacket though wish I’d kept it.

I can add that the only totally waterproof gear is Wax Cotton, from many years of UK riding, including 3 years as a bike courier. I now own 2 jackets in that classic style, but in Goretex, one black, one grey, I have 2, due to a cock up by Amazon or Royal Mail. As I don't need Wax over here, they suit my needs in our short, not to wet winters. Cheers, DINO,and PANDA says Hi, and enjoyed our ride out last week!

Nice jacket Ian , I've got a couple of jackets in that style, one of them is a Merlin , it's got a similar problem with the neck buckle, the damn brass square buckle loop twists diagonaly when you tighten it , I've added some more stitching to stop it doing it.

Since arriving here in Wales, our hosts have been coughing and spluttering, both suffering from heavy colds, it was only a matter of time before either my wife or myself ended up with it. Sure enough, it was me. Started on Tuesday, really felt rough, and not that much better now. Still trying to get out and do things, though my cough wouldn’t make for very entertaining video 😂, so not been on Clementine since I created these vids (another due out early this week). I did go and clean Clementine today, she was disgustingly filthy, so really needed to clean her before she goes into the van on Monday, ready for the drive home on Wednesday. Hopefully my vids will keep you up beat, ready for when you are fit and well. All the best.

Hi Ian, I was interested in this video as I have a Merlin Kurkbury wax cotton jacket which is very nice quality. I find buying bike jackets online can vary in sizes between the same and different makes. My Merlin Kurkbury being an XL is a snug fit but my Merlin Neptune textile jacket also an XL has plenty of room for a thick jumper etc. The sizing of the Speedwear jackets are not made clear on their site and so I contacted them about the size I should go for being 44"- 46" chest. Reply was either a large or XL. Still confused. Your choice of large looks perfect what size would you be. 😊👍🏍

Hi John. I tend to wear Large in everything, and this fits spot on. My vital statistics (😂) are
Chest under the arm pits = 37”
Belly (yes the alcohol has taken it’s toll) = 40”
      Across the shoulders = 16.5”
Hips (waist, my trouser belt) = 40”
Arm length from under pinto cuff = 19.75”
I usually wear a t-shirt, plus a fleece jumper over (summer), or long sleeved top, plus Keis heated jacket over (winter)
      Hope this helps

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  4 месяца назад

This is perfect in the arm for me, but haven’t a clue about my chest, I just go large to be in the safe side. I could do with losing a bit of belly though 😂. On the jacket, from under arm pit to end of sleeve is 21”, hope that helps. I have just measured my chest, under the arms, and I am 40”, so allowing for a jumper or similar, I would say that a large would be too tight on you. Sorry 😢

I really love my Oxford Hardy, a great summer jacket, which would no doubt stand up to chilly rides with the lining in, or even with the Keis heated gear underneath. The other jacket, which will probably just sit in the wardrobe, is an Oxford Montreal Textile. In the same condition as when I bought it in April 2018, and we have covered some miles since then. Hi Ian looks a very good jacket for the money especially when you look at the prices of Belstaff I will certainly be checking out that website thanks for the tip .don't get me started on the state of the roads and these cowboys that come along and crash the repairs in quick then bugger leaving it to all come out again a month or so later for a quick buck it's mind boggling the amount of money councils must waste paying these people for bodging the holes in and very short sighted I remember when councils actually had their own in house repair teams for doing this many many years ago it surely wasn't as bad as it is these days 😉👍

Thanks Mal. My grandad, and his brothers used to work for the council many moons ago. Their work was outstanding, and stood the test of time, unlike the shoddy workmanship now. Too many managers in the system, too few workers who want to actually work. Crazy times my friend.

I don't think thr Speedwear website does a good enough job of advertising these jackets and outlining their properties/included items. In particular they sell the Pulford jacket for £180 which is CE AA rated and comes with a full set of elbow/shoulder/back armour. That massively undercuts even Merlin, a brand with basically no reputation beyond being a Belstaff knock-off. I think I'll get one!

Indeed, if you do, could you please mention me. I won't get anything from them now, but who knows, they might offer me some discount in the future. Cheers

It is hard to say whether that is black or a very dark brown? What would you say Sir.
Does it have armour pockets at elbow and shoulder ready for D3 etc?
    Kind regards.

Hi, it is dark brown. No armour pockets anywhere except for the provision for a back protector. They do have other jackets very similar, which I am pretty sure, do have either armour fitted, or pockets for you to add your own. Just visit the Speedwear website. 👍

Gee half price is a great deal Ian.Textile all seasons jackets are very waterproof & lots of protection but can be heavy.
Leather is lighter but feels better.

I just got me a Summer mesh jacket from Dririder & it came with a waterproof lining & back protector.I do like the Merlin Lichfield jacket but lingering around off the bike the Merlin other Merlin jackets with straight zips are better when off the bike sitting around etc.
I wouldn't mind a leather jacket & I do have a leather vest but I would get a leather jacket with armour & the rear overhang at bang. That jacket is very nice.

Thanks RR. I know you can damage your body parts at low speeds, but I quite like returning to those days of simplicity. Speedwear do a jacket called the Pulford (I think), which, again I think, already has armour built in. Cheers

@@ianhughesroyalenfieldthat does appear to be a fine jacket, I've always had a soft spot of waxed cotton in general too. Those roads are a menace to society..

I am not going to try and explain again. I have put an explanation in the video description, and as a reply to your comment. Have you noticed anything amiss since the Super Sausage video, where you also commented that you couldn't hear me in the van ? The wireless mics, cost more than I can afford, and for the odd occasion I talk to the camera, I can't justify spending that amount.

I am really sorry. We are away on holiday at the moment, so away from my pc and favoured editing software. I am having to use a different software, with very limited audio volume control, and tbh is a complete pain in the rear to use. As for on the road , I am caught between the devil and deep blue sea, as if I increase audio within the camera, my voice and wind noise will create too much distortion . Honestly, I have really tried to edit as best as I can, to try to put content out during this month we are away. Unfortunately, it wasn't successful this time. Don't fear though, we return on the 7th of February, so things will be back to normal. There are another couple of vids coming out, but just on the bike, no talking to camera. Once again, so sorry.
