    My friends and I went to the LEGO store on May 1st to all get one, and we appropriately crowned ourselves the title "Droideka Daddies".
    Now being a proud droideka parent, I adore this set, and its price feels good. Also compared to other subthemes, like the helmets and starships, this feels like a great value. Albeit, Star Wars merchandise always comes with a deluxe price tag. The Octan reference is also adorable!

  • @undead.rising
    @undead.rising Месяц назад +74

    It's good, just a little bit smaller than I expected. Remember the buildable Droideka from about 2002-2003? May have been in the Technic line? That was the same price but you could roll it along, and the rolling function would activate it into its standing pose? That was fun! I loved that set.

      I had that one back in the day! I loved the concept of it. Only problem with it was that bits fell off of it constantly. That was a pretty common problem with some of those early Star Wars builds. They always looked amazing but would fall apart far easier during play than the more modern stuff.

    The poseability idea is interesting, but certainly in the films I don't associate the Droidekas with having more than one main "battle position" so to speak, so it's not something that bothers me that much.
    Might pick this up once it goes on sale in a few months.

    I guess this comment section is turning into a critique on lego pricing.
    my opinion?
    Lego is pricing itself into irrelevance.
    I mean, in my opinion, their prices aren't terrible, but they're creeping ever higher and turning themselves into a hobby brand exclusively for adults.
    adults have always put their lego on display, but kids are starting to do this, as well. they're turning themselves into a model company with models that look _too_ good. kids aren't taking their models apart and using their engineering brains to build stuff anymore, they're playing doll or putting them on a shelf.
    this is great for lego in the short term, as nerdy adults have a lot of disposable income. and kids always buying more lego is good for business.
    but when the kids grow up and don't really have memories of sitting on the floor, making crappy cars or spaceships or bonkles, they are less likely to get lego for THEIR kids and instead, give them a tablet or phone, which today's kids are spending more time on than with toys. at that point, lego will exclusively become for nerdy adults who like a certain brand and want to get the lego model of that thing (think about the marvel heads)

    It does make me wonder why they didnt use a half pin axle piece for the leg connection, just allowing you to rotate the legs around. I cant imagine it would of caused that much stability or strength problems.

    I really regret not getting the Technic Droideka that was sort of Bionicle-ish. It could transform into a ball and everything. This one seems kinda not as mechanical as that one. Honestly? It looks just like an upscaled version of the minifigure scale one.

  • @evo_is_confused
    @evo_is_confused Месяц назад +4

    My main issue with the droideka minifigure is its arms are waaaay too long. But hey if my real issue with a set is a nitpick about the minifigure then that's good territory to be in.

    Overall I think that's the best minifig scale droideka we've ever gotten. I went and looked up all the past droidekas and they all look really bad. I have some nostalgia for the one in the lego star wars video games, but comparing it to the thing from the actual movie that one doesn't look right either. I agree about that the legs are a bit off but I'm actually not sure if the exo-force arms are much better.

    I have the original Technic Droideka, it holds together just fine, but the original elastics have all aged, and hardened, or cracked. Other than that the Droideka has held up and still functions.

    I have the old Technic Droideka that could roll and fold itself out. It was very reliable in the beginning, but at some point the folding out mechanism just stopped working. Oh well, it still works fine as a display piece, and from what I see in this video, the Technic Droideka scales better with the Buildable Figures.

    It might sound crazy but this droideka is minifig scale if you consider it the ultra variant, droideka had 2 variants 1 small and 1 big. It's legends however, but it makes 100% sense when looking at the CIS who loved making oversized vehicles and ships of already existing ones (recusant dreadnought, providence dreadnought, magna octopurra)

    To be honest I really didn't mind paying $65 for it. Would I have rather paid closer to $50-$55? Sure, but $65 doesn't feel outrageous to me. I enjoyed the build and the end result is just so neat to me. I find myself occasionally moving the arms back and forth while doing my best impression of their iconic blaster sounds lol. Overall I like the set.

    Part 3171: Barb / Claw / Horn / Tooth with Clip, Angled would have made a better approximation at this scale but unfortunately it is not available in light bluish gray yet and Lego missed an easy opportunity (or ran out of parts budget) for a simple recolor here.

  • @JekPorkbricks

    I still wish the legs had some articulation, mostly because in its default pose here the legs are too extended, making the Droideka appear a bit too tall, if they're going to be stationary they should've been designed in a way in which they are spread out more. I am also not that fond of the rolling up feature as it is not how it rolls up in the films.

    As my personal years in lego tick on.. lego pricing is strange. I only by new lego at 30-50% off rrp (for aus, replace with your local customary discounts). I feel like they're just directly pricing lego sets at me/how i buy lego. The people who pay full price for the stuff don't exist or are the odd exclusive. Yet the guy at the local lego stores still sound surprised that you don't buy anything from them that's available from department stores. He was a bit green i guess. Also these sets day one had 10% store credit from lego and official stores and 20% off from department stores. Everyone seemed sold out by the end of the promo.

    • @Klaevin
      @Klaevin Месяц назад +1

      I have a lego store near me, but it isn't owned by lergo, so they can't run lego quality promos.
      I'm talking about the 10% store credit , but also the sets that come with every amount of money spent. for example, the free set that comes with 50€ spent, the free set that comes with 120€ spent...
      so I only buy when I visit a "real" lego store that does those promos, or I buy online. the closest one I know of is 4 hours away and I sometimes go because my sister lives in that city.
      Here in France, we rarely see more than 10% off anyways, and we don't really have department stores. Just giant grocery stores with malls before the entrance to the grocery store.
      If I wanted to get a promo, I would have to go to a picwictoys (the company that bought toys'r'us in france) or some other toy store and as I said, they don't often run decent promos.

    I’m really surprised to see many people less than stoked on this set. It looks great, in my opinion, and it captures the subject matter well. The silhouette of the rolled-up form seems well shaped, almost making a sphere.
    I guess I am biased in favor of the subject matter. I was born shortly before Episode 1 came out, so I grew up with the prequels and I have a strong nostalgic attachment to them despite their flaws.
